Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

    Panti, Hennessy
    Shaw, Jenkinson/Mings, Huth/Coates
    Hazard, Sterling, Walcott, Depay, Anya
    Benteke, Lukaku, Pelle

Everton's fixtures drop like a bomb after GW1 in my opinion. Unless he bags a brace against Watford, Lukaku could be dead weight until fixtures turn a bit sweeter. Plus he will only just be back to full fitness come the start of the season. Watford or no Watford, he's a risk.

It's a good point. I assumed he is aware of the risk and probably punting. Otherwise you're 100% right

I agree but as I said it is only for gw1 possibly gw2 depending on how he plays v Watford. So won't be dead weight as I won't be holding onto him

If i were to be critical I would highlight Depay and suggest downgrade to one of the many great value 7 mil mids (Chadli, Milner, Tadic) or below (Ki?) to turn Lukaku into Rooney.

Like the Sahw selection, been toying with the idea of a Man U defender myself.

Thanks for the input peeps. Yeah Lukaku is a punt. No Che def is not to do with the CS. More so that WHM and BOU rotate well and United have nice fixtures. So instead of Azpi and 4x4.5's.5's I can get Shaw and Jenkinson. Depay is in there because of Uniteds fixtures and my decision to drop Rooney

      Depends.

I expect Bournemouth to go down. But I expect that to be more through lack of defensive nous than lack of attacking threat. I don't mind starting with Ritchie or Atsu in view of fixtures. But I wouldn't go near a Bournemouth defender.

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 7 months ago

That's fair enough. I'm looking at Lens here and backing Sunderland to go down with two of Villa Watford and Norwich personally. Both Ritchie and Lens have the potential to blow up because of their early fixtures but I just can't bring myself to it.

At the moment Eriksen is my cheapest starting midfielder.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 11 Years
          10 years, 7 months ago

I think that sounds like an expensive midfield then. 😕

Eriksen is a great pick though in my view. If I were playing 3-4-3 and if I wasn't wildcarding early he'd definitely be in my team.

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 7 months ago

Yeah its: Hazard, Arsenal, Depay, Eriksen.

Last year Fab, Ramsey, Mata, Eriksen worked so well and they're all midfielders I can trust. I'll be downgrading one of them when it comes to picking up Aguero but to start early I'm happy with that.

I never rate Bilic style of defending. I'm Turkish and have followed him last year with Besiktas closely. He's tactics are awful defensively, hardly kept CS even tough had quality defenders.

I think Europa qualifying games are evident that Wham is leaking at the back at this point of time.

There seems to be a mass defection to Coates from O'Shea. The only quote from Advocaat that I've seen was the Scout tweet that said essentially it's all up in the air. Was there something else that has tipped everyone's hands?

I'd like a Sun defender. Leaning towards plunking the extra on PvA, but I'd love to save the .5. I just really don't want to start the season with dead weight. Hate WCing so early. Would like to wait until international break, at least.

Well I hear you but I feel Advocaat is a man that rewards players you did a job for him. To the tail end of last season Coates really handled himself well. As for Kaboul who knows. Wouldn’t be the first time the club captain took a seat. Look at Arteta! So O’Shea beware...maybe.

No doubt. It's not like O'shea is Benjamin Button, getting younger. Nor is he Dutch. Kabul is the one he brought in, which gives him a little boost. Coates seems a good shout, don't get me wrong. I just don't want to f around fiddling with 4.5 defenders, if there are injuries to the high numbers guys.

Of course, money is at a premium especially early.Only one in that is safe in the back line is PvA but Coates is a very European styled defender and you know how the Dutch are when it comes to stuff like that. Coates isn’t rough and tumble and he was a big reason why Uruguay won the Copa America in 2011.

Yeah I prefer Ritchie to Lens to begin with. Just my opinion though Lens has great potential and the fixtures to start well. What are your other strikers? Fancy Pelle?

Where does one begin when assembling a team for GW1?

It's my second season playing FPL and last season I ended up using my wildcard by GW4 due to amateur mistakes in picking a team.

    Advice would be much appreciated

Get players that will most likely start. Here is a link thats nice, it shows a spreadsheet over probable starter for each team:

Safety first. Use your wstchlist to keep trackoff riskier picks. Fill your team with sure starters and a few heavy hitters, such as hazard, Rooney, ivanovich

Anybody else considering not starting with a Chelsea defender?

Fixtures aren't looking good initially and they conceded lot of goals during warm up games. Also didn't look compose vs Arsenal either.

i usually do have a big chelsea hitter in my def but their cheapest nailed def is like the most expenssive arsenal player (which i see better in defence this season)

    What do you guys think?

    Steke
    Baines Mert
    Haz Fab Ozil Silva Depay
    Lukaku Wilson Bamford

    Schwarzer - Targett STaylor Baker

All out attack with a wild card gw2. Too insane?

    Just a couple of dilemmas
    1. Cech or Hart
    2. Stirling or Walcott
    3. best 5m option, currently have Aarons as a smokey

Dead zone please help me out.

Final RMT prior to next week...I hope.

    Cech // Schwarzer
    Bellerin o'shea ward // Gomez s Taylor
    Hazard ozil milner Sterling tadic
    Rooney lukaku // deeney

3-5-2 with the thought of getting in aguero for Sterling & lukaku after gw4 and switching to a 3-4-3

Oshea is the only player in your back seven who I would consider

    2. Dax

The obvious concern is that none of your defenders is nailed on. Bellerin will probably start the first one but is under threat from Debuchy. Same goes for O'Shea and Coates/Kaboul. Ward might be first choice - donlt know too much about Palace but Souare looks decent on the left and Kelly is competition on the right.

Great midfield with lots invested but who do you drop in GW 2 when Deeney presumably starts?
