Aston Villa’s summer of restructuring continued on Friday afternoon with the acquisition of striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers. The 26-year-old becomes the club’s ninth new face of the summer transfer window as Tim Sherwood strengthens up front following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Gestede cited the Villains’ attack-minded approach under Sherwood as key to his decision:

”The manager told me I’d bring another dimension to the team because of my size and the way I play. He trusts me and I felt comfortable to sign as I knew he wanted me here. It’s good to be part of his new set-up. He’s still relatively new himself and trying to refresh the team. He’s brought in a lot of new players and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. I love the way his teams attack and play on the front foot. For a striker, I’m going to have chances to score goals. That’s all you want.”

The History

Brought up in Essey-les-Nancy, France, Gestede joined FC Metz’ youth academy at the age of 16, penning a professional deal one year later. He played for their B team for the next five years while notching three goals in 28 appearances for the senior outfit. A season-long loan spell to Cannes for the 2009/10 campaign harvested four goals in 22 outings, before Cardiff City snapped him up in the summer of 2011.

Gestede struggled to impart his influence during his debut term with the Bluebirds, bagging just one goal and three assists across 25 appearances (five starts). An injury that summer found him sidelined for the opening two months of the 2012/13 Championship season. Upon his return, Gestede played second fiddle to the likes of Craig Bellamy and Heidar Helguson, mustering a modest haul of five goals and three assists in 27 appearances (five starts).

In an attempt to secure more regular playing time, Gestede joined Blackburn Rovers on loan in November 2013. He then signed a permanent deal with the Lancashire club in January, before going on to record 13 goals and three assists in 27 outings. His fine form carried over to the previous campaign, when he chalked up 20 goals and four assists in 39 appearances, ranking joint-fourth in the league-wide scoring charts.

On the international stage, Gestede represented France U19s on 17 occasions between 2006-08 but never turned out for the senior side. Called up by Benin in 2013, he has since scored three times in six appearances.

The Prospects

Speaking on Gestede’s arrival at Villa Park, Sherwood lauded the 26-year-old for his eye-catching attacking output last term:

“I’ve known about Rudy since he was at Cardiff City and he is a player I’ve always admired. His goalscoring ratio last season was fantastic and he is someone who certainly knows how to find the back of the net. He’s a big, physical striker but he can play and I’m pleased to welcome him to the football club.”

The former Spurs head coach was clearly in the market for an imposing frontman to fill the niche vacated by Christian Benteke, who won more aerial duels (187) than any other frontman in the Premier League last season. Certainly, Gestede looks the ideal replacement –over the last two seasons, no player in the top four levels of English football has netted more goals from headers.

Villa’s wide men could well prosper from Gestede’s introduction to the starting XI. The likes of Leandro Bacuna (5.0) – who’s classified as a defender but has been fielded on the right flank in pre-season – already piqued our interest with his out-of-position potential and could further profit from the new boy’s arrival. The former Netherlands U21 international ranked second (18) behind Ashley Westwood (23) among Villa’s midfield for crosses, despite clocking only 1044 minutes. With a cross frequency of one every 15.3 minutes, Bacuna could the perfect foil for the ex-Blackburn marksman.

That being said, the possible recruitment of Emmanuel Adebayor offers Sherwood an alternative to Gestede and with Libor Kozak also in the mix, the Villa boss has target man alternatives. Given that Sherwood has utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 set-ups over the summer, Gestede has the physical attributes to lead the line as a lone striker, though the Villa boss has also trialled a 4-4-2, which could see fellow new boy Jordan Ayew offer plenty of pace and movement alongside a more robust strike partner up front. Like Ayew, Gabriel Agbonlahor can also operate on the flanks but will perhaps be limited to minutes off the bench in light of Sherwood’s squad overhaul.

Sherwood’s penchant for attacking football may well promote Villa’s main men as viable value options for the season ahead. A weekend hat-trick from Scott Sinclair (5.0 in FPL) has many mulling over his inclusion in our midfields, and if Gestede nail down a starting berth, he may also stake a claim for our Fantasy consideration. Likely to come in around 6.0 – the same as Ayew – in FPL, the former Blackburn hit man has six favourable fixtures (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA, STOK) in the first eight Gameweeks to ease him into his new surrounds.

I have 1.5m spare and I don't know what to do with it.

    Myhill Henessey
    Azpi Merte Cedric Francis 4m
    Mane Walcott Sterling Cesc 4.5m
    Rooney Benteke Sakho

Merte -> Kosc and Azpi -> Ivan is doable but seems too sideways.
And that 0.5m extra from Merte can be useful later on.

No interest in rotating keepers too. Especially it's WBA.
(CS against Chelsea, MU, Liverpool, Spurs and Everton last season, few of Myhill's biggest hauls)

Too short to get Hazard unless I downgrade Mertesacker to a 4.5m and rotate with Francis

    Thoughts?

here's a question, when does he become good value to you? 11.0, 10.7, 10.5?

Value won't will you FPL. Points do.
Value would work if the game had 15 players scoring points each GW.

Value is to be accounted for properly and oh it can be. Basic VORP has so many flaws but adjust it properly for Captaincy and rotations and now we're talking.

You could win FPL every season with a dead team. That says a lot when you think about how most of the players in it have quiet periods in the season.

Yes, I know. And I think you said that the 8 highest points scorers in FPL would always be in it, right?

Care to tell me who the 8 highest points scorers in FPL will be in the coming season? That's the problem. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

You could if you found 15 outliers. By the way I'm talking about working from an RMT-style system not FPL Value which is last year's scattergun outcomes not the underlying forces.

*If you're template you go a long way. I'm always a few deviations away from it and I got wiped out in gw6 because a handful of the wrong midfielders all scored big and I had a gw rank of ~2.2m or something stupid.

                        @ Balders

OK value would be 10.5. Good value would be 10.0. But that is excluding the captaincy element.

Read the article when it comes out - Hazard is the player I use as an example. I'd be interested in your comments if you have been working on a similar thing.

That's interesting, because your on for Costa to outscore Hazard aren't you? I'm with the crowd expecting Hazard to do best and be the better captaincy option. As a result I have Hazard at about 11.7 in captaincy tandem with Aguero and 12.2 If Aguero suddenly gets a 2 month injury, before I'd settle for Costa as my Chelsea captain.

Hey guys! First comment from me prior to GW1.

    a) Fabianski (SWA) and Barkley (EVE)
    b) Butland (STO) and Ritchie (BOU)

Which pair would you go for?

Ignore the price difference issue, as it's from a danish FPL game, where the pairs are equally priced!

Already have Lukaku from Eve. No other players from Stoke, Bournemouth or Swans.

My philosophy for GW 1 is survival, i.e. minimize risk, so 15 playing (no 4.0 benchers).

My punts were Walcott (may not get 90 min) and Costa (c) and no Hazard.

Now it looks like Walcott > Hazard + Kane.

I really really like this team. Trying to find fault but can't really. I think Walcott might explode in GW 1 and then you have the obvious risk of Sunderland's awfulness and their great short-term fixtures. If anything, I think you could find 0.5 by downgrading PVA to Kaboul/O'Shea but again they're not exactly nailed.

As noted in other comments, Walcott is not nailed for 90 minutes. Currently have him in my team, but think I will be transferring out. One of Ozil/Cazorla/Ramsey is enough ARS attack for me. Get someone under 9.0 and use that to upgrade D or Defoe to Sakho. That def is looking pretty weak. 4 x 4.5 is gonna be rough.

It's a tough choice. I think D and E are the worst, and I'd probably go with A myself, as it contains a lot of good potential from different players, rather than just going for a few premium players. You should reconsider Lambert though.

I hope you'll help me in return!

      a) Fabianski (SWA) and Barkley (EVE)
      b) Butland (STO) and Ritchie (BOU)

Which pair would you go for?

Ignore the price difference issue, as it's from a danish FPL game, where the pairs are equally priced!

Already have Lukaku from Eve. No other players from Stoke, Bournemouth or Swans.

      Cheers!

I'd go B from that though. Rather Fabi and Ritchie.

No abuse from me. I am surprised CHE haven't done more to strengthen their squad. Gonna be tough for them to repeat what they did last year with no improvements (bar Falcao who will not start), when most of the other big teams have at least one new starting player. I'd love to see CHE bring in a scoring mid for Oscar/Willian, but doesn't look like it will happen. Currently planning on downgrading Haz for Aguero in a few GWs myself.

Yeah I'm surprised they haven't strengthened either...or at the very least Cuadrado getting some playing time. He seems made for the premier league but never had a string of consecutive starts.

Post Dick Avocaat taking over (about GW30?) they were actually playing a lot better and Lens gives them a cutting edge up top they lack. Consider the fixtures as well and it could be a punt that pays off

2nd best option in terms of guaranteed starts (minus WK1 obviously) but you are right, that's a major gap in the .5

good rotation isnt enough... ppl overlook the fact its still bournemouth and wham defenders and these sides wont keep clean sheets against most teams even the easier fixtures ( im a westham fan and we are anything but tight at the minute)

          • 15 Years

your point is valid, but for what you come to expect from 4.5-5.0 options, and taking those fixtures into account (it really is as good as a rotation Ive seen in my years looking at building DEF rotations before WK1) - i think however few CS they may have on the year, the stretch of home games in that rotation offer the best climate to get them.

Plus the hope is francis adds an assist in that stretch somewhere for ya.

    4. Dax

Given their fixtures, a West Ham defender is a good addition. Cresswell value diminished slightly by Payet on set pieces, I like Tomkins but not nailed on with Ogbonna and Reid so yeah Jenkinson is probably the best pick after GW 1.

RMT Please, First draft of the year.

    ----------------------Ruddy/Butland
    ---Mert -- Ivanovic -- Ward -- Francis -- Bassong--
--Walcott -- Hazard-- Mane-- Milner-- King------------
    --Deeney -- Benteke -- Rooney---------------------------

Is it a gamble on the triple 4.5 defense rotation? (3-4-3/3-5-2 seem to be the most promising formations). My move to Aguero is downgrade the least performing midfielder (bar King) and upgrade Rooney. Also the Deeney or Wilson for budget forward has me rethinking things. Easy switch though. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
