We continue our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, with a look at Stoke City.

To get up and running, we delve into the Potters’ data and compare them to the rest of the Premier League, before assessing their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look for some pointers ahead of the upcoming 2016/17 campaign.

Despite finding the net on 41 occasions, Mark Hughes’ side still finished in ninth position for the second successive season. Although they mustered just three points less than 2014/15 – picking up 51 points – it’s fair to say that the Potters’ threat in the final third took a turn for the worse in a season that saw just nine of their players find the net.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Thoughts on this 4-3-3 based squad? I can't see much value in midfield whereas these defenders are all fairly cheap and offer great attacking threat and BP potential.

    Cech
    Baines, Shaw, Fuchs, PVA
    Eriksen, Tadic, Townsend
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

    Jaku, Friend/JEvans, Watson, Fletcher

Indeed, didn't notice Cech as well. You can swap quite easily to Ibra if needed becuase of the structure.

Downside is there are a lot of expensive mids you can't get!

    Bottomed.

    First Draft:

    Heaton (Foster)
    Shaw Stones Friend (Soare/Kone)
    Mkhitaryan Firminio Siggy Townsend (Hojberg)
    Aguero Zlatan Rhodes

Keepers rotate well and are nailed.
If Stones goes to City will have a United and a City defender plus 3 nailed 4.5s.
Mids all have decent goal threat and/or share of set pieces and a nice range of prices 9.5, 8.5, 7.5, 6.5 (4.5).
Both big hitters included and with Boros signings and good fixtures Rhodes gets the nod as budget striker.

    Opinions?

Seeing too much love for kun here...
IMO why he shouldn't be bought @ the start-
1- scores goals in bunches and never very prolific from the off (last season most ppl had ended up selling him before that 5-goal match ag. Newcastle.
2- pep won't necessarily be an instant success, pl is much harder
3- Aguero is neither a target-man like Lewandowski nor a CF like Messi
4- players like kdb are new to pep's philosophy
    5- less value @ 13m

he was first name in my squad

      best player in league
srtiker for best team in league (probably - bookies fav)
      fav to be top scorer
city will score lots, he will benefit
injuries are less frequent than when he arrived in premier league
      doesnt have much competittion
he is a captaincy option nearly every week
can be devastating in just 20 mins - see GW8

If a striker consistently gets over 20 goals a season, ur name can be yakubu or kun aguero, you're in my team.

Hes a known commodity and he does his job. I don't mind the 13m cos even when he gets injured, I know he'll come back and bang 5 vs whoever.

Better safe than sorry when it comes to Aguero in my opinion. Yes there will be weeks when he fails to score, same can be said for every player, but averages over 20 goals a season in the league despite never having a season without a spell on the sidelines due to injury.

I think that as long as he is fit, you must own him, it is just too risky not to.

Prefer the budget mids to budget strikers. And there's a nice range of strikers in the 9m range too. 🙂

      Currently on

      Aguero Gray Berahino

If benteke moves to a PL team then I'm getting him.

      Considering Callum Wilson also

    Goalkeepers

Only really 4/38 bad fixtures for this combination and will only cost 9.0m and a transfer in GW8

    West Brom/Burnley GW1-7
    SWA/ (LIV, EVE)/ MID/ HUL/ WHM/ WAT/ sun

    West Brom/ Middlesbrough GW8-38
    WAT/ (liv/ ars)/ BOU/ lei/ BUR/ hul/ (WAT/ HUL)/ sot/ SWA/ SWA/ bur/ sot/ HULL/ wat/ SUN/ WBA/ STO/ (whm/ EVE)/ BOU/ CRY/ SUN/ (ARS/ MUN)/ swa/ (wat/ hul)/ (SOT/ BUR)/ (LIV/ ARS)/ bou/ LEI/ bur/ SOT/ swa

So basically it's Foster for the whole season, and let's be honest WBA do consistently rack up double-figure clean sheets per season, so stick with him through the bad spells.

Burnley have question marks over them but you'll only own Heaton for their good fixtures at the start of the season, and he could rack up the saves.

Middlesbrough are tipped to be the most defensive of the promotion sides and do look good on paper. By GW8 we'll know if Valdes is nailed on and then that will be our keepers set up for the season.

    Thoughts?

      I don't do rotation

      Foster all season until DGWs

GW7 = international break, could just wc then and swap

I'm starting with Valdes and Foster I think. Heaton is on my radar, but the other two seem to work best togther imo.

Yeah Foster/ Valdes for the season also works

Only difference is with Heaton until GW8 you get 6/7 home fixtures
With Valdes you'll only get 5 (6 if you wanna play TOT in GW7 though)

Leicester were tipped to be most defensive of promoted sides in 14-15, but ended up leaking goals while burnley supplied clean sheets consistently
One must remember that teams approach the pl way differently, one cannot count on championship record

At the start they did but look at the latter half of the season, didn't hey keep something like 11/12 clean sheets in their last 19 games or something

Jaku won't be first choice long-term and frankly I don't want Hull

As a 4.0 player you'll need to set yourself aside 2 transfers to have any chance of upgrading him. 2 transfers for a keeper is a waste imo

How's this for a first draft?

    Foster Jankupovic
Shaw Funes. Mori Friend Souare 4.0
    Mkhi Eriksen Firmino Townsend Fletcher
    Aguero Costa Wilson

Issues are Hazard vs Mkhi, and whether to keep Firmino despite figures (his price is wonderful). Also not sure on the defense!!
