Earlier this month Watford confirmed the signing of Belgian defender Christian Kabasele, who joins from Genk for a reported £5.8 million.

Arriving on a five-year deal, the centre-half was afforded an extended summer break due to Belgium’s involvement in Euro 2016 before making his debut as a second-half sub in the 3-1 friendly win over Union Berlin last Tuesday evening.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website earlier this week, the defender reckons his style of play should help him acclimatise to his new surrounds:

“I am expecting the rhythm and the level to be very high. It’s going to be difficult but I have to work hard for this. I have good speed and I’m strong in the challenge. Also with the head I scored some goals last year with Genk. I will also try to improve all my weak points to be a complete player and to help the team have a good season.”

The History

Born in Lubumbashi, Zaire, Kabasele began his career at Belgian second division side Eupen, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2008. The following season he was part of the side that won promotion to the Belgian Pro League – in his first spell at the club, he made nine appearances in all competitions.

During the 2010/11 campaign, Kabasele was sent out on loan to fellow Pro League side Mechelen, where he played four times, scoring one goal.

In August 2011, the Belgian defender joined Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad for an undisclosed fee. Although he was part of a side that won a league and cup double, registering three goals and an assist in 11 appearances, Kabasele returned to Eupen ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

Over the next two seasons, Kabasele would cement himself as a regular, playing 41 matches and scoring six goals, impressing enough to earn himself a move to Genk in the summer of 2014.

Kabasele’s career has continued in an upward trajectory over the past two years, with an impressive seven goals and one assist accrued over 81 appearances for Genk. Standing at six foot once inch tall, the Belgian looks to have strong athleticism, and also the physical attributes in which to make the step up to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has represented Belgium at every youth level from Under 18 upwards and notably scored five goals in 10 matches for the Under 19s. Kabasele has yet to make his senior debut, although he was a member of Marc Wilmots’ Euro 2016 squad.

The Prospects

The Watford defence was one of the most resilient budget rearguards around last term after keeping 11 clean sheets (eight at home) but, following the departure of Quique Sanchez Flores, the slate has very much been wiped clean.

Intriguingly, new boss Walter Mazzarri has started with a 3-5-2 formation in all three of the Hornets’ opening summer friendlies, though also utilised a four-man backline later in their first fixture.

Should, as expected, the Italian opt to play with three at the back, the likes of Jose Holebas, Allan Nyom and new boys Juan Camilo Zuniga and Brice Dja Djedjemay are likely to battle it out for the wing-back berths – all four are priced at 4.5 and look valid value options if they can nail down a regular role.

Frustratingly, Kabasele’s goal scoring record of 12 strikes over the last four seasons has earned him a price of 5.0 in FPL – that’s costlier than any Watford defender and on a par with Heurelho Gomes, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, and also registered three penalty stops.

Granted, he is expected to command a regular role in the heart of defence as he battles it out with Craig Cathcart, Miguel Britos and Sebastian Prodl for a starting spot, though his price tag looks prohibitive – particularly if Mazzarri continues with a 3-5-2 and settles on his preferred wing-backs.

Certainly, Watford’s opening fixtures (sot, CHE, ARS, whm, MUN) will certainly also deter any initial investment in their main men, with points at either end of the pitch likely to be hard to come by in the early weeks of the season.

With some uncertainty over how Watford will line up at the back under Mazzari, FPL bosses will likely take a watching brief over the opening month of the Premier League season to evaluate the strongest route into the Hornets backline.

After that, though, a very favourable between Gameweeks 6 and 10 (bur, BOU, mid, swa, HUL) could well bring their cheap defenders onto our radars. Kabasele’s lofty valuation – relative to his backline team-mates – suggests he faces a real struggle to earn any investment unless he can make an immediate impact in and around the opposition box.

    How's everyone doing?

After giving it a few days, it seems to me that:

    1. There aren't that many high-priced midfielders I want from the start
    2. There aren't any mid-priced midfielders I want.

Does this mean we should go heavy up top? How is everyone's midfield looking/structured?

Ayew's starting fixtures putting me off, and I'm going Eriksen over Lamela.

Currently on Mkhit, Eriksen, Townsend, 5.5, Clayton..

By mid-priced I mean 6.5m-8.5m. Who are you looking at?

Eriksen and Townsend are the only two I've really considered..

Interesting. Pool and Swans put me off hugely by fixtures.

Maybe Arsenal I'll look into more.

And Chelsea seems like they need time, at least for us to see where and how Fab plays.

Not convinced by any of these but Eriksen

Liking the look of Boro/Sunderland/WBA defensive rotation three way.

    STO/MID/MID/CPL/WHM/CPL/WBA/WAT/whm/BOU/bou/HUL or BUR/hul/HUL or WAT/swa/SWA/SWA or WAT/bur/bur.

What you all think of that?

I think you're underestimating most of those teams. I could see CPL, MID, WHM, STO, BOU and SWA having good seasons

I'd imagine most of the sides faced in that rotation above will be among the lowest scorers at the end of the season.

Not sure about the 'cpl' fixture yet. May have to do something about that. But considering the attacking returns from Francis I'm not too bothered. Wolly is a baps demon too.

Is Francis actually going to play RB? Surely we need Friend in the mix too? I haven't checked but currently I have Friend/Wolly/Kone.

Hi guys . New to this site . Happy to become a member .

How does this look like ? Constructive criticism welcome .

    Foster / Boruc
    Shaw / Friend / McAuley / Paredes / Lenihan
Townsend / De Bruyne / Mkhitaryan / Hazard / Shaqiri
    Agüero / Hernández / Carroll

I know its light in defence and really heavy in Midfield but i plan to try and play all my 5 Mids every week and i think having a strong Mid is the way to go this season . Any comments most welcome .

Nice team but not a great tactic imo. 343 and a 4.5 mid is best.

I'm not in love with any of the premium forward options.

Tempted to just go 3 X 6.5 then go apesh!t with money in the rest of my team, filling it with premium.

Gray/Long/Wilson/Carroll/Negredo all at this price point, with Deeney/Musa/Ighalo marginally more. Three on PKs might just do it.

      This is wild.

It could be a fun way to start, but I think it will ultimately fail. Not only because you don't have the top teams strikers but also your team balance/structure will be difficult to change.

But WC could fix all that. Interested if you try it!

      1. Murder on Zidane's Flo…
        • 14 Years

I tend to agree with your analysis.

That said, there is a reasonable chance that the top forwards are bad value. Aguero' price is eye-watering as usual, it remains to be seen how Ibra will settle into the EPL, Studge is a sicknote, Costa not on pens and may share duties some.

If It permits me Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mahrez/Miki, plus say Townsend, it could produce more points for me over the season.

Agree on the flexibility issues-it does leave me unresponsive. Never more than a -4 away grow adapting though really, within reason (excluding Kun, Ibra).

Good argument. Benteke if he moves would be great as a cheap option up front.

I do like those options in midfield; I haven't really considered KDB or Sanchez or Payet because I'm looking at Aguero and Ibra, likely partly from my nostalgia for doing well with the highest price strikers.

It does look a tempting option for those braver than I!

          1. Murder on Zidane's Flo…
            • 14 Years
            9 years, 11 months ago

Yes, Benteke definitely included if he makes the move to Palace.

I watched the Copa America and Sanchez was excellent for Chile. Really very sharp.

We all know what a magnificent footballer Ibra has been, but there have to be some reservations about whether he can immediately adapt.

Watching Kun the last year he just hasn't been quite the same player. For the massive premium I'm just not quite sure he cuts it unless Pep gets City banging in the goals, which is a definite possibility. There is always the injury cloud as well.

The fact that you are giving up those players is exactly what I'm getting at. If I get a striker on pens they should get me a solid return.

I'll keep you bookmarked and see what you choose!

I'm going with the standard because it seems every year this argument is made and 3-4-3 with at least one if not two premium strikers comes through.

I hope you do it! I'd like to watch. And I'd like my strategy to see me ahead of you in the rankings 😉

Do also note my reply to Just a Hat below though. I will probably end up going with 2 x 6.5 + a Giroud or Vardy type.

Def not picking Kun, Ibra or Kane for GW1 though - and that's final!

Yeah, definitely has a feeling of comfort about it. I'm just not prepared to pay the going rate for Kun.

I will probably end up with one more expensive striker (but not beyond the 10M mark).

I think the best tactic for defence is to go for one premium (6m+), one mid-range (5m or 5.5) a pair of rotating cheap 4.5m players and then a final 4.5m who has a few decent fixtures here and there... This allows you to spend between 23.5m and 24.5m on defence whilst still fielding three potential clean sheets.

The question becomes, who are the best 4.5m rotating defenders? And who to fill that final slot (I'm on Pieters at the moment)?
