Earlier this month, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was launched for the campaign ahead. After winning the League of Leagues for each of the last three seasons, we’re now looking to defend our crown in 2016/17.

What’s more, Sky Sports have kindly pledged £1,000 to the manager who finishes top of our league. Win that, and you might just be in line to claim an even bigger prize.

We’re proud to say that the Fantasy Football Scout league has supplied the winner of the overall Sky Sports game in each of the last two seasons – for some handy research, those looking to get involved should check out this interview with 2015/16 winner Alan Wood from earlier in the summer.

In an incredible 2015/16, Alan emerged victorious with a 100+ points winning margin over his nearest challenger and collected £20,000 for his season’s work.

This time around, the top prize is £25,000 – incentive enough to assemble a team in time for kick off on August 13.

For those playing the Sky Sports game, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8183867.

It’s also worth noting that Sky Sports have introduced a handful of tweaks to their rules and scoring system for 2016/17. We take a look at the main implications below.

Captains

Undoubtedly the biggest change to the Sky Sports game is the new captain rule:

  • Captain changes must be made before each Match Day deadline to score points for your team. This means managers can make unlimited captain changes in a Game Week.
  • Throughout the 2016/17 season, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football Game Weeks will run from Friday to Thursday.

Out goes a single tactical armband swap, with Sky Sports Fantasy managers now afforded unlimited changes in a round of fixtures. Similar to how we have previously made transfers in the middle of a Gameweek, each captain selection must be finalised prior to each Match Day deadline.

Last season’s Thursday night deadline has been changed to move into line with the new batch of Friday evening fixtures.

Essentially, then, having a captain for each Match Day is far easier to achieve and the planning element of the game will now centre on ensuring we have sufficient armband coverage in any given Gameweek. Just like last season, we expect transfers to prove key to this strategy.

Bonus Points

Further reading on the new scoring system can be found here, though we’ll go through the main changes one-by-one below.

Bonus Points – Tier 1 (+2 points for each)
5 saves made (GK only)
3 tackles won (All)
60 completed passes (All)
3 shots on target (All)

Bonus Points – Tier 2 (+3 points for each)
7+ saves made (GK only)
5+ tackles won (All)
70+ completed passes (All)
5+ shots on target (All)

The Tier 2 Bonus section is new for this season, as is the shots on target section in Tier 1. Jonty’s recent community article, which assessed the new implications, is worth swatting up on.

The main difference here is that a player needs to make three successful tackles to earn +2 points this term, whereas he was required to register four last season. This could be a valuable source of points for full-backs and central midfielders in the main. Taking the time to delve into our members data on offer could reward the shrewd manager here.

Scoring

  • Goalkeepers and defenders now qualify for a clean sheet after a minimum of 60 minutes rather than 75.

This rule change could be quite influential and bring the Sky Sports game in line with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ruling on pitch time required to earn a shut-out. Those defenders prone to early substitutions are now slightly more appealing options again.

  • Goalkeepers are now awarded +7 points for a clean sheet instead of +5.

Combining a premium keeper in a defensively sound team who also makes a lot of saves seems the best way to exploit this new scoring system, particularly when you consider the relatively low price of the premium keepers compared to the premium defenders (who still receive only +5 for a clean sheet).

  • Penalty saves are now worth +5 instead of +3.

The likes of Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, who made more spot-kick stops (three) than any keeper in 2015/16 and West Ham number one Adrian (who has registered more penalty saves (five) than any other keeper in the last two seasons) will likely benefit from this change.

  • Defenders now get +7 and Midfielders +6 for goals scored, forwards remain on +5.

All three classifications earned five points apiece last year, so the improvement certainly smiles kinder on the defenders.

Patrick van Aanholt led the way for goals scored amongst defenders in 2015/16, with six to his name, which would have earned him an extra 12 points under the new rule. Palace’s Scott Dann, with five goals, would have been the only other defender to earn at least ten more points from this ruling.

Eight midfielders would have earned at least ten points more in 2015/16. In saying that, only two Sky Sports midfielders (Riyad Mahrez, with 17, and Andre Ayew, with 12) were at least on a par with Van Aanholt’s tally of 12, with Alexis Sanchez (13 goals) classified as a forward.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out Player Price List analysis articles, breaking down the options position by position and offering insight into each player’s potential.

We’ve also set up a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

He's in my team atm. If Gabriel looks like starting regularly in a performing Arsenal defence then it's easy to do Williams > Gabriel when their fixtures clear up. Plus SWA fit in with a few rotations set ups.

Yes, but consider Fernandez's returns v price and they're then even funnily enough. So I guess it boils down to how you value the extra compared to other assets. I'm sure we'll see an article on replacement value soon.

    All out attack chip
Its the least attractive of the chips
Anyone who is planning early WC how about this

    GK 4.5 and 4.0
    (2) 5.0 defenders sure to start with great fixtures
    like Morgan, Dawson, Williams
    (3) 4.0 defenders sure to disappoint
maybe snare one that ends up to be a solid 1 pointer every other gameweek
All that money to spend on the attack

I don't think you should squeeze him in. Thought about it for a while and decided I'd rather spend the funds elsewhere. Just my opinion though and could change depending on what options become available in other positions over the coming weeks.

I hear you. To be honest it's more to do with team value in the beginning - if Zlatan goes off in GW1 it'll be more difficult to get him in for GW2, whereas if he flops I can easily sell him and upgrade elsewhere.

Aye, I see the logic in that. Think Jonty pretty much said the same thing in his RMT article too.

My contingency plans to get around that eventuality is a) hope that if Ibra is in form then Aguero isn't, thus letting me do Kun > Ibra easily, or b) hope that whichever other United attacking option I go for is able to cover Ibra's points, or c) just wildcard in GW3/GW4 like so many others do and bring him in then once alternative options in other positions have become a bit clearer.

With the exception of Sanchez and Ozil, I think it's a general reluctance to spend a high amount (£9m) on only the second best midfielder from the team.

About .5/1m more expensive than I'd have in my own team, though the individual players themselves seem like strong picks as far as I can see.

Stay away from Chelsea def IMO. New manager and new formation is more of a wait and see I think. Not sure how well it well work out initially.

Nope. More likely ogbonna as he can play there.

Or we can go 3 at the back. Also rumored to get brady.

Bilic is intent on playing Antonio at rb so Byram only gets a chance there if Antonio moves further up the pitch (likely through injury/poor form from others)

Byram can fill in at lb with cresswell injured, but most likely it will be nordtveit filling in until a replacement is bought. Rumours on Brady have cooled significantly and now the long rumoured Rico henry as well as Leeds Charlie Taylor are the most likely rumoured targets

Is it just me or is Cesc being overlooked a bit?

Had a bad season last year, granted. However, he did improve a bit in the second season. Given the new manager and the new sense of focus they'll have (as opposed to last season, which was over for them before it had even really begun), is it that unlikely that he'll rediscover the form he showed in the 14/15 season?

At which point he's an absolute steal for his price.

Aren't most people wondering where he'll play though in the 4-2-4 that Conte is supposed to favour? I want Fab in my team but for the sake of the unknown i'd rather splash the extra on Haz.

I would have thought that a Kante/Cesc midfield two would be a bit lightweight for that system? At which point it's difficult to see him playing in a position that wouldn't benefit him FPL-wise?

If Chelsea play 4-2-4 then Italy played 3-3-4 at the Euros. 😕

What Conte calls it is one thing. What that actually means is another. It probably won't be too far away from the 4-2-3-1 Chelsea have played for the last 3 seasons except with the #10 closer to the striker (= 2nd striker) and more attack-minded - when Oscar is #10 he plays like a CM but 10 yards further forward.

Conte doesn't use 2 out and out centre forwards usually. It's one target man and one off. Fabregas could easily play that 2nd striker role, he did it often for Barca and has done it (as well as playing false #9) for Spain.

PS I think Fabregas is the most under-valued player in FPL this season.

        2. Freddie Cutecat
          • 9 Years

I would be surprised to see Fabregas in that role next season, but could see him lining up for Chelsea if Conte decides to switch to a 3-5-2 as one of the central mids.

Although Conte does like forwards with different attributes, he played Eder and Pelle together at the euros, Tevez and Llorente together for Juve in in 2013/14 Serie A season as well a a combination of two of quagliarella, matri and vucinic before
          that.

Given Chelsea's rumoured hunt for more forwards despite having Costa and Batshuayi on the books, I am expecting two out and out forwards in any Conte system.

Hence I think it's best to watch and wait with Chelsea under their new manager to see how he lines up and who thrives under his system.

I agree with the last sentence. That applies to every new manager. But Fabregas is a world class player (or close to it). He's not going to be consigned to the bench.

Bear in mind Conte's intention to tailor a system to suit his players rather than force his players into a system that doesn't suit them.

Agreed that he could prove to be a bargain if he recaptures his form from the season before last. Think him being overlooked comes from not knowing what position he's actually going to play (CM vs #10) as yet.

Yeah. Whelan and Imbula were the main men in the double pivot last season I believe and I think Imbula is the more defensive of the two, which is why I am thinking Whelan is the one likely to make way. I might be wrong though so I'm looking for some more thoughts.

If anything I would say Imbula is certainly the more attacking of the two.

Played some games further forward when afellay got injured and has a great left foot shot from distance

If stoke's fixtures were nicer and they scored more goals I would consider him as a budget option
