Sky Sports Bonus Point Magnets

The Sky Sports game has now launched with a number of key changes to its rules and scoring. This article will look at specifically how the new bonus system works and also aims to find out which outfield players are most likely to do well in 2016/17 based on last year’s performance.

New Bonus System

First up let’s recap on the new bonus system, which has two tiers of bonus.

Tier 1 – Two bonus points have been made available for the following:

3 saves made (GK only)
4 tackles won (All)
60 completed passes (All)
3 shots on target (All)

Tier 2 – Three bonus points have been made available for the following:

5 saves made (GK only)
5 tackles won (All)
70 completed passes (All)
5 shots on target (All)

For passing, in particular, this represents a key change compared to last season, where two bonus points were awarded for 60 completed passes. This means that those who did well last season in terms of distribution are set for a significant hike in bonus points if they can maintain, or better, last season’s form.

Bonus Point Magnets

Next up, I take a look at last season’s statistics to find out how many times players would have received those extra points now on offer by the top Tier 2 bonus allocation. With three extra points up for grabs this is a key group of players to consider investing in.

Number of 2015/16 matches where 70 completed passes were made

Cesc Fabregas 14

Santi Cazorla 11

Aaron Ramsey 8

Fernandinho 7

Yaya Toure 7

Ashley Williams 6

Federico Fernandez 5

Mark Noble 5

Jon Obi Mikel 5

Lucas Lieva 5

Two stars of this bonus allocation are the 9.2m-priced Santi Cazorla. His incredible record of achieving maximum bonus on 11 occasions from just 15 starts is unbeatable. With his 2015/16 campaign curtailed by injury those investing in the Arsenal man will be hopeful he can stay fit and earn regular starts next season.

Cesc Fabregas’ tally of 14 from 33 starts is also very impressive. He looks to be another that will do well next season, particularly as under new management Chelsea should be set for an improvement. Furthermore the Chelsea man achieved the tier one threshold 12 times, the only player to hit double digits in terms of frequency. This means that for passing alone Fabregas would have achieved an incredible 66 bonus points last season if this year’s bonus rules applied.

Also worth noting is the Swansea centre back pairing of Ashley Williams (7.3) and Federico Fernandez (6.6m), who offer a few extra points on top of any clean sheets you might expect. Of the pair, Fernandez offers the better value if using bonus allocation as a guide.

Number of 2015/16 matches where 5 Tackles were won

Lucas Leiva 7

Yohann Cabaye 6

Allan Nyom 6

Simon Francis 4

Kyle Walker 4

Gareth Barry 4

N’Golo Kante 4

Yann M’Vila 4

Lucas Leiva (7.8) of Liverpool, Yohan Cabaye (8.6) of Crystal Palace and Watford defender Allan Nyom (6.2) are the main beneficiaries here. However, there could be question marks over starts for Nyom and Lucas, which makes Cabaye perhaps the better, albeit most expensive, bet of these three. If Lucas can get regular starts, given his passing bonus potential as well as tackling potential, he could be a great option for those looking for a cheaper midfielder. However, there is speculation that the Liverpool man could be subject to a transfer away from the Premier League.

Number of 2015/16 matches where 5 Shots were on target

Harry Kane 2

Andy Carroll 2

Sergio Aguero 2

This is a tough bonus to get. Just three players achieved this on more than one occasion. Shots on target, however, remains a useful indicator of expected goals.

In terms of the tier one threshold of three shots on target this is easier to achieve. Among those who did well here Kane (12.8) stands out after hitting this lower threshold on eight occasions, while Jamie Vardy (12.0) achieved this seven times.

Conclusion

With the creation of a tier 2 bonus points success in the Sky Sports game depends on ensuring you invest in bonus magnets. Fabregas is a great example of this and could be set to handsomely reward his suitors. If he and Cazorla can also add more goals and assists to their game their end of season scores could set records in this Fantasy game.

It is also worth noting that defenders fair poorly on the whole compared to central and defensive midfielders the main beneficiaries of bonus next season, albeit at a reduced rate compared to last season. This suggests that a 3-5-2 formation could, once again, prove the most profitable.

Looks like only the very best at passing, tackling and shooting will benefit from the new bonus system. Ozil and Dembele are among those to hit the 60 threshold far more frequently than the 70 threshold for passing, meaning they are set to lose out. Cazorla and Fabregas meanwhile have the passing accuracy and frequency to withstand the hit passers will get next season.

In addition members should take a look at Arsenal's new midfielder Xhaka and his Euro 2016 stats.

Here's the 60+ pass lot. Only those that got it more than twice. So basically those who achieved it three times will only get three points all season if they mirror last year's performance.

        Sky
        Gameweeks 1-12

        +1 Point

60 completed passes in a match

        Fabregas 12
        Ozil 6
        Coquelin 3
        Schneiderlin 4
        Can 6
        Fonte 3
        Ramsey 3
        Dier 3
        Mvilla 3
        Dembele 6
        Stones 6
        Gabriel 3
        Francis 3
        Matic 4

No worries. As you can see Fabregas the only one to get anything meaningful out of this threshold.

Yep, whoever is in that Alonso/Xavi type role for MCI will do well in Sky. Fernandinho certainly has promise, he's among the best of the rest according to my analysis.

I have 8.7 itb left for one midfielder but for some reason when I click confirm on Fernandinho it says current budget exceeded even though I should have exactly 0.0.. odd.. Might just start from scratch.

Anyone want to talk about any players they think have been undervalued? Will be doing a full quota of articles but good to get your thoughts.

Here's a few for each position i think could be good this season if given the game time.

    Gk:

    Heaton 5.8
    Mannone 6.0
    Robles 6.2

    Def:

    Holebas 5.5
    Rangel 5.6
    Friend 6.3

    Mid:

    Deulofeu 8.1
    Redmond 8.2
    Townsend 8.3

    Fwd:

    Austin 9.8
    Gray 10.1
    Wilson 10.2

Also think Leko at 6.6 could be gold later in the season but its game time i worry about there

Interesting, whats the story with Reach and Marney

          • 10 Years
          7 years, 10 months ago

Marney played every game he was fit for last time Burnley were in the PL, but suffered a cruciate injury in that season and took 10 months to come back then had some calf problems so missed most of the Championship season last year but he seemed first choice when fully fit. He's no huge goal or bonus threat but he's so cheap he can be a great enabler for the rest of his squad.

Reach is more of a wildcard as he's young and was sent out on loan last season to Preston NE, but in 14/15 he played the full season for Middlesbrough aged 21 and last season he played the full season for Preston in the Championship. Middlesbrough used him at left mid, but Preston used him everywhere from left back to number 10 in a two striker system. He's got more goal threat than Marney but also way bigger question marks about his place in the team. If he does get starts, I think he's a lock in my team as an enabler.

I thought Xhaka might be good value for Arsenal 'cover'.

Will probably go 3-5-2 with Gray or Wilson alongside Kun.

      Heaton in goal for sure.

Bailly or Shaw could be value too given their price relative to other top four defenders...

Thanks for this, Do you feel that Rangel is a suitable replacement for Ashley Williams? There is quite a difference price-wise between them. Also, why do you choose Heaton? Thanks

Heaton has excellent save stats and has motm potential, he was one of the top scoring keepers last time they were in the premiership, saved a couple of penalties too i think.

Rangel may be competing with Naughton so that is the main worry. If not then he is a great option as he racks up passing and tackling bonus on occasion at a cheap price. Williams is always a decent option in sky for motm and passing bonus, hes also seemingly picked up the habit of scoring in recent months, Williams will outscore Rangel for sure but maybe not prove better value. As i said thats Naughton dependent.

Hi I am new to this game so could someone explain to me if I change my captain to a Sunday captain do I still get the double points I earned on the Saturday ? Also if I make a transfer on a Saturday evening do I get the points of the player that played on the Saturday and also the player I transferred in for the Sunday?

      Cheers Jonty.

Keepers are going to be very important.

Gomes got 134 points last season

If you factor in the new bonus system and the extra points for a clean sheet / pen save then he would of earned an additional 76 points meaning a total of 210 points for the season - he cost 4.3m.

That would of made him the the fourth highest scoring player in the game 1 point more than Sergio Aguero.

Peter Cech would of got 216 points and beaten him though. Im yet to do the others.

Bonus points for tackles is 2 points for 3 tackles made now. That's a big change. I'm wondering if I have to get de bruyne, he will struggle with bonuses but goals for midfielders have increased by 1 point. A lot of players can get 3 tackles in a game.

KDB is unlikely to do well in terms of bonus. He'd have to score and assist a huge amount to match the likes of FAbregas, Cazorla and we anticipate Xhaka too.

I think it simplifies things nicely. Get strikers for goals, Midfielders for passing and tackling, defenders for clean sheets and goalies for clean sheets and saves.

Just my opinion but De Bruyne looks slightly over priced as he won't be getting many bonus points. Him and Aguero cripple your team a bit too much. He's also unlikely to ever be your captain as you have Aguero

Thanks, yeah I cut and pasted Fernandez in wrong row.
I will look at De Bruyne and consider options, all the best for the season.

      Quite like this team!

No United players could be bad though

Maybe swap Fernandez for a United defender Bailly or Shaw, Barkley for Miki or Vardy for Zlatan?

This all depends on your budget though

    RMT

    Gomes
    Keane Nsue Robertson
    Payet Miki Fabregas Ramsey Cabaye
    Aguero Zlatan

    Questions:
    - Is Nsue nailed on? My other option is Ayala but he cost more
    - Ramsey or Cazorla? I know Cazorla is more likely to get bonus but so can Ramsey and he is more attacking but Cazorla is cheaper..
    - Will Fabregas get as many bonuses with Kante at Chelsea now? I just see him in the 10 role
    - Cabaye is merely for bonus, I'd welcome other suggestions however - a bonus point player that scores and assists

    Appreciate feedback!

      - I don't think Nsue will be starter this season due to them signing barragan if you want Boro coverage I would go with Friend or Ayala
      - I would go Cazorla as I don't think Ramsey will start the season due to his late euro exit.
      - depending on what formation conte is going to play because it may be the 4-2-4 therefore I think he'll be being switched around with matic a lot.
      - I have also gone with cabaye and I'm sticking with it, he's great for the tackle bonus, also hopefully will be on pens again this year.

        - yea I have thought about Ayala he was my initial pick tbh
        - good point yea, Cazorla is cheaper so would help the squad in the long run
        - it will be good to see how he sets them up, I think I will stick with Cesc as he is BP crazy naturally
        - I do rate Cabaye myself, just wonder if I have missed anyone, hopefully pens yes!

        Thanks!

    RMT

    Cech
    Williams Francis Friend
    Miki Hazard Cazorla Cabaye Redmond
    Aguero Vardy

Vardy is mainly for GW1 as hull aren't looking in great shape right now for the start of the season

    Any feedback much appreciated!

I wonder is it worth the transfer for one gameweek with Vardy?

I had Francis last season as he was known for his attacking side in the Championship but was then moved to CB which sort of stopped him, not sure if the same will happen again this season though..maybe Daniels is a better option? like he proved last season

Redmond will be interesting, great potential, could you not afford Tadic? I know he's pretty popular on ff

Otherwise I reckon its a good team!
