Earlier this month, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was launched for the campaign ahead. After winning the League of Leagues for each of the last three seasons, we’re now looking to defend our crown in 2016/17.

What’s more, Sky Sports have kindly pledged £1,000 to the manager who finishes top of our league. Win that, and you might just be in line to claim an even bigger prize.

We’re proud to say that the Fantasy Football Scout league has supplied the winner of the overall Sky Sports game in each of the last two seasons – for some handy research, those looking to get involved should check out this interview with 2015/16 winner Alan Wood from earlier in the summer.

In an incredible 2015/16, Alan emerged victorious with a 100+ points winning margin over his nearest challenger and collected £20,000 for his season’s work.

This time around, the top prize is £25,000 – incentive enough to assemble a team in time for kick off on August 13.

For those playing the Sky Sports game, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8183867.

It’s also worth noting that Sky Sports have introduced a handful of tweaks to their rules and scoring system for 2016/17. We take a look at the main implications below.

Captains

Undoubtedly the biggest change to the Sky Sports game is the new captain rule:

  • Captain changes must be made before each Match Day deadline to score points for your team. This means managers can make unlimited captain changes in a Game Week.
  • Throughout the 2016/17 season, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football Game Weeks will run from Friday to Thursday.

Out goes a single tactical armband swap, with Sky Sports Fantasy managers now afforded unlimited changes in a round of fixtures. Similar to how we have previously made transfers in the middle of a Gameweek, each captain selection must be finalised prior to each Match Day deadline.

Last season’s Thursday night deadline has been changed to move into line with the new batch of Friday evening fixtures.

Essentially, then, having a captain for each Match Day is far easier to achieve and the planning element of the game will now centre on ensuring we have sufficient armband coverage in any given Gameweek. Just like last season, we expect transfers to prove key to this strategy.

Bonus Points

Further reading on the new scoring system can be found here, though we’ll go through the main changes one-by-one below.

Bonus Points – Tier 1 (+2 points for each)
5 saves made (GK only)
3 tackles won (All)
60 completed passes (All)
3 shots on target (All)

Bonus Points – Tier 2 (+3 points for each)
7+ saves made (GK only)
5+ tackles won (All)
70+ completed passes (All)
5+ shots on target (All)

The Tier 2 Bonus section is new for this season, as is the shots on target section in Tier 1. Jonty’s recent community article, which assessed the new implications, is worth swatting up on.

The main difference here is that a player needs to make three successful tackles to earn +2 points this term, whereas he was required to register four last season. This could be a valuable source of points for full-backs and central midfielders in the main. Taking the time to delve into our members data on offer could reward the shrewd manager here.

Scoring

  • Goalkeepers and defenders now qualify for a clean sheet after a minimum of 60 minutes rather than 75.

This rule change could be quite influential and bring the Sky Sports game in line with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ruling on pitch time required to earn a shut-out. Those defenders prone to early substitutions are now slightly more appealing options again.

  • Goalkeepers are now awarded +7 points for a clean sheet instead of +5.

Combining a premium keeper in a defensively sound team who also makes a lot of saves seems the best way to exploit this new scoring system, particularly when you consider the relatively low price of the premium keepers compared to the premium defenders (who still receive only +5 for a clean sheet).

  • Penalty saves are now worth +5 instead of +3.

The likes of Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, who made more spot-kick stops (three) than any keeper in 2015/16 and West Ham number one Adrian (who has registered more penalty saves (five) than any other keeper in the last two seasons) will likely benefit from this change.

  • Defenders now get +7 and Midfielders +6 for goals scored, forwards remain on +5.

All three classifications earned five points apiece last year, so the improvement certainly smiles kinder on the defenders.

Patrick van Aanholt led the way for goals scored amongst defenders in 2015/16, with six to his name, which would have earned him an extra 12 points under the new rule. Palace’s Scott Dann, with five goals, would have been the only other defender to earn at least ten more points from this ruling.

Eight midfielders would have earned at least ten points more in 2015/16. In saying that, only two Sky Sports midfielders (Riyad Mahrez, with 17, and Andre Ayew, with 12) were at least on a par with Van Aanholt’s tally of 12, with Alexis Sanchez (13 goals) classified as a forward.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out Player Price List analysis articles, breaking down the options position by position and offering insight into each player’s potential.

We’ve also set up a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

The team looks great imo. The only thing I would possibly change is Souare as he hasn't played any pre-season matches, despite being available. I'd personally leave Paredes to rot on the bench and use the money elsewhere.

What!? I've just noticed that the FPL site is offering stats as standard that we used to get from the members section on here....

    'Threat' rating etc...

Have FPL got these stats from FFS?

    Morning all,

Best fillers here for a GW1-3 team?

    A) A Williams, Kone & Vardy
    B) Naylor, 4.0 & Kane

    Foster, Jaku
    Fuchs, xxx, JEvans, Soure, xxx
    Mahrez, Tadic, Ayew, Townsend, 4.5
    Aguero, Lukaku, xxx

    A) is more balanced, but Kane looks the standout armband option in GW2 and I probably wouldn't captain Vardy across GW1-3. With my defensive rotation it comes down to:

    A) A Williams (bur, HUL) & Kone (MID) vs
    B) Naylor (bur, HUL) & Fuchs (ARS)

    1. Numb

Vardy and Kane are not really "fillers" - surely that's the decision you need to make not the defenders.

But the impact on defenders as a result of that choice is important, imo. Where there are price differences it's never just player A vs player B - it's also about what the extra cash can do.

Kane is a tricky one - everyone seems to be avoiding him just because Dembele is missing for the first 3 weeks. He's the spearhead of their attack, will be well rested and Spurs have great fixtures and creative players to feed him (Eriksen, Alli, Lamela etc).

        You gonna start with 'Arry?

Nope, I was on the Kane train to start last season when I ignored how tired he looked playing with the U21's. This summer he looked just as tired. He'll be on the wish list when he proves his form and the stats back it up but not before.

I far prefer Kane to Vardy, but wouldn't want a 4.0 defender, so of the combos at the top I'd pick B but find 0.5 elsewhere to make the 4.0 a 4.5.

Long term I much prefer Kane also, but 3 factors have me concerned given I plan to WC after GW3:

        1) Kane's recent form/confidence - he was poor at the end of the season and woeful for England at the Euros. He also started last season slowly.
        2) No Dembele for GWs 1-3 - there seemed to be a massive correlation between no Dembele and Kane blanks last season.
        3) Opening fixtures - Vardy has (hul & SWA), which I see as 2 plum attacking fixtures, vs Kane who has only one plum attacking fixture (CPL) in the first 3 weeks. The caveat here is that I'd probably captain Kane in GW2 if I had him.

You have Mahrez and you are considering Vardy too?

I don't even want one of them. 😕 Nor Fuchs, come to that. All over-priced.

      Ah well.

Yep - it's a short term thang. Hull are decimated and I can see LEI scoring a few there, plus Swansea can't defend away form home. But mainly, Mahrez and Vardy are very good at what they do and they hog all the points from the LEI attack.

Fuchs is the BAP king who takes some set pieces. Personally, when fixtures are decent I think he's a bargain.

No Kante no party. Leicester won't finish in the top 6. It's a classic FPL "pricing on last season" thing when that team won't get near to repeating that kind of form.

It's not just about clean sheets though. Fuchs bosses the BP, so when they do get a clean sheet its normally 8-9 points rather than 6. He's nailed and attacking also. No Kante will have an impact, but I still rate the LEI defence as far better than most of the other 5.5m options

Dann, VVD, Coleman all preferable in my view. And I'm wildcarding after GW3 too.

I was considering them also, but the CPL and EVE defences are garbage, so you'd be relying on attacking returns there, imo (hard to predict and Fuchs is arguably just as attacking). VVD has slightly tougher fixtures than Fuchs also imo - WAT, SUN (thinking Iggy/Deeney/Defoe) vs hul, SWA (promoted hul players/Gomes).

                All good options though

Posted this before but got a combo poser and would love another opinion.

    A) Ibrahimovic and Ayew

    B) Hazard and Lukaku

Currently on A for the Ibra factor, think he will be tricky to get in if he has a good start (which Utd's fixtures will help with), he is a fantastic captaincy option which is a very valuable factor, and we don't know much about how Hazard may fare playing with two strikers.

Despite all that, I'm very tempted to switch to B.

For you I'd maybe get some bigger teams in defence, like Chelsea who have a solid defence usually + conte who organises defence well + kante. Also I'd 100% go for aguero and Hazard if you can afford and I like your idea of miki and coutinhio

      8.5/10

Forster 100% & that midfield is sick. Can't see you using 2 of your 3 chips to full effect though, who are your subs?

Evans, Gabriel & Gray I'm not sure on. Evans & Gabriel I can see the reasoning but I think there are more proven players at 6.5 up top!

    Martial vs Mhiki ....

Martial knows the premier league and had a good season last season, should be expected to push on from there with more goals.

Now has more goal threat and creativity for him to assist / to assist him.

Mhiki scored almost an equal number in Bundesliga from a similar number of appearances but created a lot more chances and got a lot more assists.

A mourinho signing so arguably may be favoured for starts, although on the flip side could also be eased in.

Thoughts on who is the better pick?

    3. Larry Legend

I think both are good options, but I'm also going Miki to start with. I just think early doors he is the most nailed on of the United options, and had loads of goals and assists last year. I might change if it is apparent from the later pre-season games / Community Shield that Martial will get a similar role to last season, as he is an excellent player.

    4. Rossonero

I have Martial based on the fact he's already settled in the Prem.

Very tough call, but if he operates like a support striker with a more attacking strategy than LVG played, I think he could be gold.

Far too much spent in defence for me!! A 5.5M defender who doesn't even make the first three positions? A 4.5M keeper as back up to a premium option?

I'be downgrading across your backline, with max two premium options, and upgrading one of your cheap strikers, personally.

I'd get rid of Rondon, I like him as a player but I think in such a defensive w.b side I'd just stay away, nice defensive but maybe a bit to expensive, find some money saving options then upgrade either a striker or a mid to someone like hazard

Its confusing, people are saying its his attitude but some are saying fro treatment for his injury
However lucas and J.Gomez are injured and are staying
But theres no concrete evidence of him actually having attitude problems so they may be just adding 2+2 together
He was late for the flight to america thats all I know right now
