Earlier this month, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was launched for the campaign ahead. After winning the League of Leagues for each of the last three seasons, we’re now looking to defend our crown in 2016/17.

What’s more, Sky Sports have kindly pledged £1,000 to the manager who finishes top of our league. Win that, and you might just be in line to claim an even bigger prize.

We’re proud to say that the Fantasy Football Scout league has supplied the winner of the overall Sky Sports game in each of the last two seasons – for some handy research, those looking to get involved should check out this interview with 2015/16 winner Alan Wood from earlier in the summer.

In an incredible 2015/16, Alan emerged victorious with a 100+ points winning margin over his nearest challenger and collected £20,000 for his season’s work.

This time around, the top prize is £25,000 – incentive enough to assemble a team in time for kick off on August 13.

For those playing the Sky Sports game, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8183867.

It’s also worth noting that Sky Sports have introduced a handful of tweaks to their rules and scoring system for 2016/17. We take a look at the main implications below.

Captains

Undoubtedly the biggest change to the Sky Sports game is the new captain rule:

  • Captain changes must be made before each Match Day deadline to score points for your team. This means managers can make unlimited captain changes in a Game Week.
  • Throughout the 2016/17 season, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football Game Weeks will run from Friday to Thursday.

Out goes a single tactical armband swap, with Sky Sports Fantasy managers now afforded unlimited changes in a round of fixtures. Similar to how we have previously made transfers in the middle of a Gameweek, each captain selection must be finalised prior to each Match Day deadline.

Last season’s Thursday night deadline has been changed to move into line with the new batch of Friday evening fixtures.

Essentially, then, having a captain for each Match Day is far easier to achieve and the planning element of the game will now centre on ensuring we have sufficient armband coverage in any given Gameweek. Just like last season, we expect transfers to prove key to this strategy.

Bonus Points

Further reading on the new scoring system can be found here, though we’ll go through the main changes one-by-one below.

Bonus Points – Tier 1 (+2 points for each)
5 saves made (GK only)
3 tackles won (All)
60 completed passes (All)
3 shots on target (All)

Bonus Points – Tier 2 (+3 points for each)
7+ saves made (GK only)
5+ tackles won (All)
70+ completed passes (All)
5+ shots on target (All)

The Tier 2 Bonus section is new for this season, as is the shots on target section in Tier 1. Jonty’s recent community article, which assessed the new implications, is worth swatting up on.

The main difference here is that a player needs to make three successful tackles to earn +2 points this term, whereas he was required to register four last season. This could be a valuable source of points for full-backs and central midfielders in the main. Taking the time to delve into our members data on offer could reward the shrewd manager here.

Scoring

  • Goalkeepers and defenders now qualify for a clean sheet after a minimum of 60 minutes rather than 75.

This rule change could be quite influential and bring the Sky Sports game in line with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ruling on pitch time required to earn a shut-out. Those defenders prone to early substitutions are now slightly more appealing options again.

  • Goalkeepers are now awarded +7 points for a clean sheet instead of +5.

Combining a premium keeper in a defensively sound team who also makes a lot of saves seems the best way to exploit this new scoring system, particularly when you consider the relatively low price of the premium keepers compared to the premium defenders (who still receive only +5 for a clean sheet).

  • Penalty saves are now worth +5 instead of +3.

The likes of Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, who made more spot-kick stops (three) than any keeper in 2015/16 and West Ham number one Adrian (who has registered more penalty saves (five) than any other keeper in the last two seasons) will likely benefit from this change.

  • Defenders now get +7 and Midfielders +6 for goals scored, forwards remain on +5.

All three classifications earned five points apiece last year, so the improvement certainly smiles kinder on the defenders.

Patrick van Aanholt led the way for goals scored amongst defenders in 2015/16, with six to his name, which would have earned him an extra 12 points under the new rule. Palace’s Scott Dann, with five goals, would have been the only other defender to earn at least ten more points from this ruling.

Eight midfielders would have earned at least ten points more in 2015/16. In saying that, only two Sky Sports midfielders (Riyad Mahrez, with 17, and Andre Ayew, with 12) were at least on a par with Van Aanholt’s tally of 12, with Alexis Sanchez (13 goals) classified as a forward.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out Player Price List analysis articles, breaking down the options position by position and offering insight into each player’s potential.

We’ve also set up a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved with the discussion should click this link.

Hi everyone I think I'm deciding between a 352 with lamela as fifth playing mid and a 4.5 sub forward or go 343 with long as playing forward and a 4.5 sub mid..have ibra plus ageuro up front...any opinions welcome

Think there are better options in midfield for £6.5m than there are in the strikers. There is also a significant jump in price with strikers from £6m/£6.5m - £9m

Beware the Bournemouth defence right now... particularly Francis.

EH is severely lacking at centre-half (Cook), but is blessed at full-back (Francis, A Smith, Daniels, Mings, (B Smith)).

As was seen at the end of last season, Francis did well at CB, and Adam Smith at FB. Steve Cook is talented, but young and inexperienced at this level. Tyrone Mings, when fully fit, also has all the attributes to make an excellent CB.

tl;dr - Beware Francis going to CB and losing all his FPL potential... unless EH signs a top CB. One to watch.

    😕

Didn't like how Francis' potential was wasted at CB from an FPL perspective. He was such a brilliant pick at the start of the season playing as RB. I'm not the only one who fell for Mings though at the start 😆

Ha, Mings was pure bad luck - Daniels will start the season though, for sure.

Francis has been an excellent attacking FB... but the CB potential obviously ruins him.

AND... Jordan Ibe isn't likely to be very helpful either, imo. The Ritchie-Francis axis was the stuff of dreams. 🙁

Yeah I've had Francis in my team, but might switch to Byram if he is set to take the LB spot in Cresswell's absence

Another 4.5 I'd be very unconvinced about - sorry! 😛 There's plenty better.

WHM with Antonio and Byram at full back doesn't fill me with confidence for CS potential.

      WHM...

      Plan A:
      Antonio Reid Ogbonna [New LB]

      Plan B&C:
      Antonio Reid Collins Ogbonna
      Antonio/Byram Reid Ogbonna Antonio/Byram

      Expect A.

      Allen? No prospects, too expensive.

    Premium defenders...

If you could pick one from the 6.0-6.5 price range who would make the cut for your team.

For me its between Azpi and Toby.

With the way the midfield is priced I cant see too many people having expensive defense lines to be honest.

It basically makes getting Bellerin pointless because you have to pretty much surround him with dross just to get in budget if you want a few decent mids and a premium striker.

I have a £6m def, Shaw, 2 x £4.5's and a £4m Hull defender who will probably play only because they have no one else left who is fit.

Certainly is a challenge this season.

Is this strike force too weak.

    Negredo - Aguero - Gray

Personally i think unless u spend over 8.5 mil there is not really any stand out strikes. Just think gray and negredo are going to be good cheap forwards that are going to get the goals.

I think you may well be right about Gray and Negredo.

      Gray is tempting me.

Has been in fine form, clearly is going to be their best hope of goals this season and Burnley have been here before so most of their players shouldn't need long to get acclimated back to the Prem.

Negredo is a little harder to call as he never really had a chance to do much at Citeh and he's got no track record with Boro so he could be good or he could be a compete failure there.

Gary does seem to have a lot of upside at that price and he's nailed on right from the off, not like a lot of the other £6.5's out there.

I have mixed opinions on this, but could a 4-5-1 that includes Aguero and top players in the first 11 be worth a punt?

    1. jam sandwich
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

no, it's a bad idea and you would very probably score worse than simply playing 3-5-2 or 3-4-3

      1. adstomko
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

But if the 5 included Firmino and Ayew, that is like having a 4-3-3, because it is likely they will both play as a striker?

    2. zotter
      • 17 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

No. Most points come from attack. And you need to be lucky to hit jackpot on your budget mids

      1. adstomko
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

None of my mids are budget IMO - Mahrez, Hazard, Tadic, Ayew, Mane

      2. Ruth_NZ
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

False reasoning. Most points may come from forwards but they cost more too. Points per £1m budget (value) is the calculation for players other than captains. And on points per £1m the premium defenders often come out very well in actual fact.

    3. Ruth_NZ
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

      Yes in principle.

The problem with 4-5-1 is your 2 strikers on the bench. If you want them to be starters for their clubs you'll need to be paying 6.0m each most likely. That's a big chunk of budget to have off the pitch.

Alternatively you could have cheaper strikers that are useless as subs because they aren't playing. Also not ideal.

4-4-2 is more practical. You can get a playing 5th mid for 4.5m, someone like Hojberg or Fletcher. A playing GK and defender also for 4.5m each. In that case, 6.0m for a bench striker (who will always be your 1st sub) is more tolerable.

18m on the bench is the usual "structural efficiency" target. But as long as you are under 20m you are in the right district.

      1. adstomko
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

I will probably go 4-4-2. This WAS my team:
        Mandanda - Jaku
Terry - Shaw - Van Dijk - Matip Taylor
        Firmino - Mahrez - Hazard - Ayew - Tadic
        Aguero 4.5 4.5

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 11 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

Yep. Well, I'm not sure about all of those players but that's neither here nor there.

I think playing around with structures is a very good idea. People talk as if 3-4-3 is the proven best system. It isn't. 🙂

    @Bowstring

Doubt Byram will replace cresswell tbh. We have another young player in Hendrie who is a natural LB (Byram has only played RB as far as I know)

Also Ogbonna can cover there, with Collins, Reid, Burke, Oxford, Nordtveit covering CB.

Byram lost his place pretty quick to Antonio last season, dont think Bilic rates him otherwise he wouldnt be wasting Antonios attacking potential by shifting him to RB although things could change for next season.

Gabriel is an interesting one isn't he

for 5.0 he looks to good to pass up, but we wouldn't use him 1st 2 games. So if going for a GW3, I can't see much logic to starting with him
