A marathon Saturday of World Cup action climaxes with the fourth fixture of the day, as Nigeria take on Croatia in Kaliningrad. Kick-off in this Group D encounter is at 8pm.

Though the likes of Ivan Rakitic, Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic and Victor Moses will be on show, there is only one place to start: Nigeria’s £4.0m-rated goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.

The budget custodian has been selected by 12% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA, having established himself both in the Nigerian team and as a fund-freeing Fantasy asset.

Wing-back Bryan Odowu, also priced up at £4.0m, offers the same appeal to Fantasy managers looking for a cheap fifth defender who is guaranteed game-time.

Though Nigeria qualified for the World Cup in style, scoring more goals along the way than any other African team who made it to Russia, their form in recent months will offer plenty of encouragement to Croatia: the Super Eagles have lost their last three friendlies against European opposition, scoring on only one occasion.

Though not as cheap as the aforementioned Nigerian assets, Dejan Lovren‘s modest £5.0m price tag has attracted the investment of 8% of McDonald’s FIFA managers.

Croatia’s backline kept six clean sheets in the UEFA qualification group stage (and another in the play-off win over Greece), conceding on just four occasions in their ten initial fixtures: only Spain and England had better defensive records.

No Croatia player assisted more goals in World Cup qualification than Luka Modric (£9.0m), who is the only other Croatia asset with an ownership greater than 2%. The Real Madrid star, selected by 5% of McDonald’s FIFA managers, is not part of a team that excels at set-play situations though: the Croats had fewer goal attempts from set pieces per match than any other European team during qualification (31 efforts in 12 matches).

I don't think they could start any later than what they did. Remember that players need a few weeks break after the tournament and then they've got to get themselves match fit for the new season. Chances are those reaching the SF stages won't be in top condition come GW1. So if anything they should have started a few days earlier.

That's their job. Play ball, rest, hydrate, eat well, S&C, train, game, repeat. They're very well paid for it. Same after every major tournament, some will need more R&R than others.

We don't learn our lessons in this game do we.

This World Cup so far has shown a microcosm of how we over think.

No reason on earth why tough fixtures can't turn into goal feats (Spain v Portugal) or rubbish vs rubbish the same (KSA v Russia)

Russia were great even if Saudis weren't. With confidence, home crowd and decent attack they should get out of the group. Egypt and Uruguay are hardly impressive.

      It’s a gamble mate personally I wouldn’t.

It’s tough to score much higher than 8 realistically. And you could end up with a lot worse. Why risk gaining an additional 2 or 3 at most to potentially lose 6?

I have Griezmann and I'm sticking, it's very hard for a player to be projected more than 8 points in a game without BPs, which is effectively the question. Neymar and Lukaku would come closest but not even that close to be honest.

I also have those three and I'm going Mitro. I think he's the most likely to get 2 returns, hopefully goals, which would be enough to convince me to keep the captaincy on him.

2 returns from the other two would likely mean more points, but is also slightly less likely imo

our manager, Slavisa Jokanovic, strictly told Mitro to hold back his temper on the field when he joined, and if Mitro did get a red for violent conduct he wouldn't consider playing him again. Dunno what the situation is like at the national team, but I feel like he's matured past his Newcastle anger days. Having said that, watch him get a red tomorrow after 5 mins now 😆

              8 years, 18 hours ago

Yeah this is the only off-putting thing, really, but factoring this into the decision means factoring the chances of the other two getting red cards (since it's not 0%), and other small things like chances of playing less than 90 mins, yellow cards, etc, etc, and then it's just messy and boring, and I want to have *some* fun haha. A red card is fun too!

How do you like the World Cup mascot? Can someone tell me why he has ski goggles on? This does not really make sense, because nobody plays football with a goggle.

    Thank you!

apparently they are sports goggles because Zabivaka(the wolf) runs extremely fast and they protect his eyes

Thank you! This was kind. I think Zabivaka would look much better without glasses. But probably this is a matter of taste. Maybe I will buy him. Let's see how the World Cup is going and if I would like to remember it.

Look at the rules surrounding the group stages on Telegraph and tell me the best strategy to deploy. You won't be able to. It's fiendishly difficult.

I am trying to combine the top 3 strategies I came up with:

              1) Block defences.

              2) Rotating the premium heavy hitters up front depending on fixtures.

              3) Trying to get 4 fixtures out of my players in the group stages - and not 3 - by pivoting my team & loading up on players who are in groups D onwards as they have games when groups A, B and C have finished.

You see, I am doing the absolute opposite with my main team. I am now refraining from making transfers after group D until they play for the third time. My thinking is if I bring in Neymar and Werner now and they have 6 points from the first two games, I'll be left holding resting players.

Whereas I could bring in, say Firmino, when he's named in the team to play Serbia.

As you say, loads of ways to play it legitimately

Bring players in just before deadlines. Stuck Uzoho in goal to free up funds and might get you a few points. Sone dats better than others for transfers.

I stand by what I said. Telegraph have made the game completely open and removed the restrictions we've all become accustomed to. But by doing so, they have made the game exceptional hard. I'm a decent fantasy manager - I had a better OR than Andy last season for instance - and yet even I have no idea how to play the group stages. There are at least a dozen credible strategies to navigate your way through. Which is the best? No one knows.

I also really hope that England will be the next World Cup champion. But always before every big tournament I had hopes for England and then I was disappointed. Unfortunately, England won the last knockout game in June 2006 (against Ecuador).

Therefore I hope that only Germany will not become World Cup champion. And maybe England will surprise me this time too.

So far tied for 10th in FFS league. 58 points with 7 players left to play (used B.B. GW1)

      Werener, Lukaku
      J. Rod, Carassco
      Danilo, Meunier, Mojica

Plan to WC between GW2/3 and MC in semi’s potentially.

I thought of it, but I purposely chose teams that had weak opponents for GW1/2 so that I could reevaluate every teams positions (whether they have to try or not to advance) and load up on teams that desperately need a win against a weak opponent.

My experience with McDonald’s (playing for over 6 years) is that 1 round is enough to make the lead too great to recover. So killing the first 3 rounds is crucial - you can always drop 4 points if you need an extra transfer in the latter stages which really isn’t that painful to lose in the long run.

yeah I agree about absolutely killing one round to get to the top. I think i'll go for it and WC for round 2, and go for teams that need 2 wins/draws now against easier opposition i.e Spain Portugal Uruguay. Interested to see how Germany play tomorrow

I’ve come to read all the pros on here laughing at all the ‘casuals’ who brought Messi in for the Argentina game.

Am I too late? Obviously a 1-1 draw and a missed penalty by one of the best players in the world - if not the best player in the history of the game - was highly foreseeable.

              I’m being sarcastic.

People on here like to ‘lol at casuals’ whenever a big player underperforms and say something like “you’re only picking him because he’s one of the best players in the world and not because of this algorithm I spent the last 3 weeks making to calculate the exact odds of any eventuality occurring.”

              Just a tad boring.
