Just eight matches remain of this year’s World Cup, the first of which gets underway at 3pm in Nizhny Novgorod as Uruguay take on France in the opening quarter-final.

Kylian Mbappe‘s (£9.0m) two-goal performance in Les Bleus’ 4-3 win over Argentina has attracted over 430,000 new Fantasy managers (the highest number of the round) and the 19-year-old forward is now the most-owned French asset, having been selected by 30.8% of those who are playing McDonald’s FIFA.

Antoine Griezmann (£10.0m) has yet to score from open play at this year’s tournament but simply being on spot-kick duties for his country in this World Cup of penalties means he warrants consideration. The Atletico Madrid forward, who has already scored twice from 12 yards, is owned by 17.4% of Fantasy managers.

The curious case of N’Golo Kante (£6.0m) drags on. While the Chelsea star admittedly remains the cheapest route into the French midfield, his lack of goal involvement (no goals, assists, shots or big chances created) has not deterred over a fifth of McDonald’s FIFA bosses from drafting the defensive midfielder into their squads.

Benjamin Pavard‘s (£4.5m) wonder strike in the win over Argentina, coupled with his budget price tag, has attracted the interest of over 150,000 new managers: the full-back now has a double-digit ownership, along with Raphael Varane (£6.0m) and Hugo Lloris (£6.0m).

Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) produced an excellent display in the 2-1 win over Portugal, scoring twice, but the Uruguayan striker misses out this afternoon with a calf injury.

Cavani’s strike partner Luis Suarez (£10.0m), who has two goals and an assist to his name at this summer’s World Cup, is owned by just 8% of McDonald’s FIFA managers. Suarez and Cavani have had more big chances than all of France’s squad combined this summer.

Diego Godin, Jose Gimenez and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera (all £5.7m) have been backed by 30.6%, 14.5% and 14.4% of McDonald’s FIFA managers respectively. Uruguay have yet to concede a goal from open play in 2018, with Pepe’s header from a corner-kick in the last-16 tie with Portugal the first goal Uruguay have conceded at this World Cup.

Uruguay XI (4-3-1-2): Muslera; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt; Nandez, Torreira, Vecino; Bentancur; Suarez, Stuani

France XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Pogba, Kante; Tolisso, Mbappe, Griezmann; Giroud

Bonatini a viable third forward? Scored 12 times and assisted 5 over 43 appearances for Wolves last season, and the club has just permanently signed him from Al Hilal.

    Rest of team

    Leno-McCarthy
    Robertson-Davies-Keane-Cedric-Daniels
    Salah-Ramsey-Walcott-Gray-Masuaku
    Aguero-Aubameyang-Bonatini

Bonatini is a decent backup for that team but:
Masuaku could easily be Cairney for 0.5M, and Cairney is far more likely to score points and increase in value.
Gray, Keane and Walcott could be great but are not as nailed on or good as ......, Coleman and Jota

Hmm, food for thought, this. Gray is still under watchlist, but Im optimistic. Jota does seem good, from what I hear. Cheers!

      Nice side!

I don't know much about Bonatini. But I'd be careful with Davies, Poch likes to rotate full-backs.

Also, no idea what the Everton CB situation is, it could be that Keane doesn't make the cut. Holgate was better last season.

Ahh, right, forgot about Poch's rotation policy for full backs. But with Rose going on an extended run in WC, you would think that Davies might have no challenger for his berth early in the season.

Davies will almost certainly start the season. I just don't like planning transfers.

          Each FT is worth 4pts.

Thats true, I guess. Would be a pain if I have to transfer him out later on when Rose comes in and Poch rotation strikes.
            Will think it.over, thanks!

Davies is one of the best defenders when he plays, so it could work out.

But I wouldn't feel comfortable with him when there are 5.5m options like Bellerin/Monreal and possibly Bailly/Kompany later on.

That looks good to me. Even if Bonatini doesn't start you've got decent depth elsewhere to allow you to play a two striker formation.

Hm..that midfield looks really good, I have to say! But Im just really doubtful of the City midfield, with all the transfers going around. Pep rotation could hurt that silva pick, although if Silva hita form, could be undroppable.
Defence seems okay as does the striker department.

Cheers for the feedback mate. Sanchez is the big punt really but he might well be fit and firing early! There is risk with SIlva but he's a class act and Pep knows it, he's bound to feature a lot and his price seems kind!

I worry that Clyne will threaten TAA's minutes. Also not sure on Bednarek's minutes long-term.

Bournemouth kept 6 CSs last season, so they'd have to improve dramatically for Begovic to be worth it.

          It's different though, I like different 🙂

Why is Az going mad for Diogo Jota?

17 goals, 5 assists in 43 starts at championship level is a bit meh.

      • 14 Years
      8 years, 22 days ago

I've heard nothing but good things about Jota.

But 6.5m for a newly promoted player seems a bit much to start the season with. I'd rather transfer them in later on if they look good.

    2. schlupptheweek
      • 12 Years

You could the say similar things about Sessegnon who's only a bit younger, Jota has the necessary skills for the step up and will have less expectation than Sessegnon.

Knockaert 45 games, 15 goals and 8 assists 2016/2017. Promoted. Hyped. Failed.

Can see it happen to Jota as well.

      1. schlupptheweek
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 22 days ago

You're point is perfectly valid it just comes down to personal preference as is the game. Jota plays for a better side, is younger and comes from Atletico Madrid which could help him achieve his destiny!

        1. Oven Glover
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 22 days ago

Sounds a bit biased tbh. Good luck. Looks like a decent prospect but he has to prove himself at the top level before I spend 6.5 on a promoted player. Same goes for Sess, who I had in my initial squad.

    4. jia you
      • 9 Years

Yeah, I feel it's a wait and see with him which could prove the shrewder move than paying 6.5 in a hit and hope at the start

Agreed. I Was tempted, but.also going for this. Bonatini is only 5.0, so low risk anyway. Jota is just a tad too much for a newly promoted player.

Anyone else planning on having no premium strikers?

Firmino and Zaha is my current frontline.

Kane and Lukaku will surely have a bit of wold cup blues, Aguero seems a great option but we know Jesus will rotate with him and Auba has a poor first few games and will the manager take time to sort Arsenal out...

There's a fairly credible Alex Sandro rumour. Not shaw what would happen Luke.

Dalot looks to be Valencia's understudy.

      Haven't heard anything on CBs.

Brazil are playing a World Cup quarter final against Belgium in one hour...and the page is full of RMTs for a Premier League season well over a month away.

    For shame.

    Neymar will boss this.

This - I've captained Neymar and I'm expecting big things. I have also been going on about how Brazil will definitely win the World Cup for the last month..and will need to find a big rock if Belgium knock them out.

        3-1 is my prediction

Absolute travesty that Jesus gets a game ahead of Firmino in that Brazil team. The selflessness of Firmino would compliment a selfish Neymar.

I was one of those who were crying out for Jesus over Bobby, but seeing them play, I'd feel Firmino would've been the wiser pick for Tite. He contributes a lot to his team's defence, which could defend his side from Belgium's attacking prowess.

Captaincy is a huge factor for me. You essentially double his score.

And given he was so far ahead of every other player last season, you miss a huge chunk of pts captaining the next best player.

If you spend wisely elsewhere you may be able to make it up, but it will be difficult imo.

      1. jia you
        • 9 Years

this is a fair point, if going without you really need to invest the extra wisely and weigh up your captaincy prices carefully!

To be honest I’m hoping most people are thinking like you. Hope his ownership is low and then sit back and watch people waste their wildcard a take hits to bring him in.

Obviously most people aren't mate haha! I could well change my mind and start with him though for sure. Fair points been made here in favour of exactly that!
In the likely event that his ownership and captaincy is very high every week, it might make the game a little boring!
For that reason I guess it's good that he's at leaet 13m. Good luck 🙂

i was leaning towards not having him, but i've now changed my mind. Even if you forget about the captaincy point (I'd probly captain him first 3/4 weeks), he is still excellent value: about 23 points per mil compared to 21 for eriksen/mane.

    Pickford
    Mendy - Alex-Arnold - S.Ward
    Salah - Sigurdsson - Sane - Deulofeu
    Aguero - Firmino - Wood

    Stekelenburg - Bednarek - Wan-Bissaka - Gunnarsson

Think I'll stick with this for tonight until tomorrow it inevitably all changes, anything you'd change?

Masterplan is coming together!! Pre-season will decide the undecided spots...

    Fabianski / McCarthy
    Cedric / Robertson / Daniels / Everton poss Wolves 4.5def / 4.0 starting def?
    Salah(c) / Eriksen / Jota / McArthur or Cairney / 4.5mid?
Lukaku (first 2 at least, placeholder for Auba) / Aguero / Zaha.

Any early thoughts much appreciated, thanks.
