And then there were six. A European nation is guaranteed to win the World Cup this summer after South America’s final two challengers, Uruguay and Brazil, were despatched by France and Belgium in Friday’s quarter-final ties.

The bad news for Fantasy managers who own one or several of Philippe Coutinho, Neymar, Marcelo, Thiago Silva, Diego Godin, Fernando Muslera and Jose Gimenez – and there are many who do – is that their assets’ races are now run.

Coutinho was the most-owned player in the game ahead of Friday’s fixtures, while Godin and Marcelo both had ownerships of over 30%.

There is, at least, the consolation for those playing McDonald’s FIFA of being allotted five free transfers before the semi-final deadline next Tuesday evening. That is an increase of two transactions from the quarter-final limit and will in many cases be much needed to overhaul Fantasy squads that contain an abundance of players from eliminated sides.

Weโ€™ve got all the goals, assists, clean sheets and Fantasy talking points from Friday’s two quarter-final matches.

Uruguay 0-2 France

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Raphael Varane (ยฃ6.0m) – 12 points
  • Antoine Griezmann (ยฃ10m) – 9 points
  • Hugo Lloris (ยฃ5.9m) – 7 points
  • Corentin Tolisso (ยฃ7.3m) – 6 points
  • Samuel Umtiti (ยฃ5.9m) – 6 points
  • Benjamin Pavard (ยฃ4.5m) – 6 points
  • Lucas Hernandez (ยฃ5.0m) – 5 points

After Kylian Mbappe (ยฃ9.1m) hogged the limelight in the 4-3 win over Argentina, it was Antoine Griezmann‘s (ยฃ10m) turn to demonstrate his worth to the French national side – and Fantasy managers – with a starring role in the quarter-final win over Uruguay.

The Atletico Madrid forward’s teasing free-kick delivery was flicked in by centre-back Raphael Varane (ยฃ6.0m) for France’s opening goal and, while Fernando Muslera (ยฃ5.8m) could do little about that header, the Uruguayan goalkeeper was culpable for Les Bleus’ second.

Receiving the ball from Corentin Tolisso (ยฃ7.3m) around 25 yards from goal, Griezmann struck a speculative shot that Muslera could only palm up and into his own goal, Packie Bonner-style.

Mbappe, the most-bought Fantasy player ahead of the quarter-final deadline, ended the match with one point after picking up a yellow card.

Hugo Lloris‘ (ยฃ5.9m) superb save from a Martin Caceres (ยฃ5.8m) header was the closest that Uruguay came to a goal, as the 2010 semi-finalists struggled without injured striker Edinson Cavani (ยฃ9.6m).

Uruguay XI (4-4-2):ย Muslera; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt; Nandez, (Urretaviscaya 73′) Torreira, Vecino, Bentancur (Rodriguez 59′); Suarez, Stuani (Gomez 59′)

France XI (4-2-3-1):ย Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Pogba, Kante, Tolisso (N’Zonzi 80′); Mbappe (Dembele 88′), Griezmann (Fekir 93′), Giroud

Brazil 1-2 Belgium

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Kevin De Bruyne (ยฃ9.8m) – 7 points
  • Renato Augusto (ยฃ7.2m) – 6 points
  • Romelu Lukaku (ยฃ10.0m) – 5 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (ยฃ6.0m) – 5 points
  • Philippe Coutinho (ยฃ9.2m) – 5 points

Having almost failed to get past Japan in the last 16, Belgium produced a fine counter-attacking performance to eliminate Brazil and reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 32 years.

Two first-half goals did for the Selecao. Nacer Chadli‘s (ยฃ6.9m) inswinging corner was flicked past his own goalkeeper by Fernandinho (ยฃ6.2m) for Belgium’s opener before Kevin De Bruyne (ยฃ9.8m) finished off a swift breakaway to double his country’s lead. The excellent Romelu Lukaku (ยฃ10.0m) picked up a deserved assist for De Bruyne’s strike, which was reminiscent of the Manchester City midfielder’s arrowed effort in the 5-0 win over Swansea City in April.

Substitute Renato Augusto (ยฃ7.2m) nodded home a chipped cross from Philippe Coutinho (ยฃ9.2m) to halve the deficit, but a sustained period of late Brazilian pressure came to no avail.

Thibaut Courtois (ยฃ6.0m) collected three extra points for his nine saves made, one of which was a fine injury-time stop from Neymar (ยฃ12.1m). The Brazil forward cut a frustrated figure all evening as he was thwarted by Courtois and denied a penalty claim by referee Milorad Mazic.

Thiago Silva (ยฃ6.2m) should have scored from a Neymar corner when the match was still goalless, but could only turn the ball onto Courtois’ post from point-blank range.

Brazil XI (4-3-3):ย Alisson; Fagner, Silva, Miranda, Marcelo; Paulinho (Augusto 73′), Fernandinho, Coutinho; Willian (Firmino 45′), Jesus (Costa 58′), Neymar

Belgium XI (3-4-3):ย Courtois; Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen; Meunier, Fellaini, Witsel, Chadli (Vermaelen 83′); De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku (Tielemans 87′)

I read the post on this thread about the best defences to get from the big teams.
This is the type of structure I plan on going for a 5-2-3 early in the season.
Then it can be varied as the season goes on with more value players.

    Ederson (Speroni)
    Robertson Mee Smalling Tarkowski Otamendi
    Mane Salah (Gunnarsson, Masuaku, Mkhitaryan)
    Wilson Aguero Wood

The only one I am torn with is Smalling/Bailly.
I like the fixtures of all the rest of the players.

My theory is it will have them sharper and they have limited options elsewhere at the moment.
Overall my fpl team will evolve when the season starts in any case.
I just feel those Burnley fixtures are too good to ignore from a defensive point of view.
I am open to suggestions on other options instead of wood all the same.

Good point about them being more match fit at the start of the season because of the Europa league.

But they still have midweek qualifing games throughout Aug that will hamper lineups/freshness for the PL

We see it every year affecting PL teams!

Didn't the runner up last season invest heavily in the back? It could work but no one will support it on here.

        I did not realise that.
My logic is that a defender getting more regular clean sheets is like finding mid-priced midfielders who get a regular supply of assists/clean sheet points.

When I factor in the possibility of attacking defenders getting assists it seems even better.
For this reason, I hope if Man United sign Sandro he will be priced at 6.0m.

      Not necessarily a bad thing.

From a wolves fan I would go for Jota, scored 17 goals last season and as exciting as it is to have Jiminez in the team, he hasn't been tested in England yet.

I was wondering why Wilson and Wood do not seem to be mentioned in any RMT's or comments.
Does this mean that they are not good picks or just good under the radar options?

Wood was one of the first names on my teamsheet. Unless he's not in favour in preseason, he's staying in my team throughout all my drafts.

Only will work if Dyche runs out a split squad for Europa/PL tho otherwise rotation and fitness nightmares

I think Dyche will use a second string for the Europa League at times.
          https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/2869256/sean-dyche-burnley-aberdeen-europa-league-challenge/
          He said:
“There are players in each slot really vying for it. I can make changes.

“In the past, we’ve had times where I’ve thought, ‘That’s going to weaken us’. But not now."

But the bit that stands out for me:
“We possibly need to add but if you take away this season’s injuries, you wouldn’t need that much.”

I remembered him from last season just seemed to pop up with a goal regularly.

    Fabianski
    Cedric Mee Robertson
    Sane Salah Mane Sanchez Mkihi
    Zaha Arnautovic

    Subs:

Do you think it’s possible to get away with such a heavy hitting midfield or would you make some changes ?

This table is absolutely fascinating: https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/24294/

Man City have a vastly superior defence than United despite United keeping one more clean sheet.

Ederson over DDG and pocket the £0.5m.

Exactly. DDG may continue to get save points, but it's a myth that United have the best defence in the league. Scratch beneath the surface and you'll see it's leaky.

Do you think Firmino will be back for GW1? He played 81 minutes in total and in 36 days Liverpool will play their first PL game. I really need him to be ready...

1st draft RMT probs GW3 WC

    Ederson Speroni
    TAA Cedric Holebas Daniels Douglas
    Jota Salah DSilva Sane Lingard
    Jiminez Zaha Firmino

Thinking about selling Salah to get Alonso in defence as it's a possibility he could flop.
