West Ham United’s summer spending has continued in the last few days with the capture of Andriy Yarmolenko from Borussia Dortmund for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £17.5m.

The Ukraine international has signed a four-year deal with the Hammers and was Manuel Pellegrini’s fifth recruit after the signings of Ryan Fredericks, Jack Wilshere, Lukasz Fabianski and Issa Diop. Attacking midfielder Felipe Anderson has since signed from Lazio for a club-record fee.

The 28-year-old winger has an eye-catching goal-scoring record in his native country, having scored on 99 occasions in 227 league appearances for Dynamo Kyiv (the fifth-highest goal haul in Ukrainian Premier League history) before his move to the Bundesliga a year ago.

Yarmolenko also registered 65 assists in his time with the Ukrainian giants and has 35 goals in 77 appearances for his national side.

With Marko Arnautovic having been reclassified as a £7.0m forward in Fantasy Premier League ahead of the coming season, Yarmolenko’s listing as a midfielder for the same price is particularly convenient for those Fantasy managers who are unconvinced and unhappy at the maverick Austrian’s positional conversion.

Whereas Arnatouvic has only hit double figures for goals in a season on three occasions, Yarmolenko achieved this feat seven years in a row while at Kyiv.

The 6′ 3″ winger would seem set to play on the flank in Pellegrini’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, though attention will have to be paid to the Hammers’ pre-season friendlies for any tactical tweaks by the Chilean manager.

West Ham’s Director of Football, Mario Husillos, said of the club’s latest capture:

He is a left-footed player but can play on the right and is very quick, very good one-on-one against a defender. He gives the team a lot of attacking options and scores goals, is fast on the counter-attack and provides aerial threat with his height.

The History

Yarmolenko’s club career began with Desna Chernihiv in the same Ukrainian city where he had progressed through the youth system.

It was from Chernihiv that Yarmolenko made the move to Dynamo Kyiv, where he had previously – and briefly – spent time as an academy player.

Featuring initially for the Ukrainian giants’ reserve side, the rangy winger made his first-team debut at the age of 18 towards the end of the 2007/08 season. Yarmolenko marked that cameo substitute appearance against Vorskla Poltava with the winning goal in Kyiv’s 2-1 victory.

Yarmolenko made only three starts and seven substitute appearances in 2008/09, failing to register a goal or assist, but his breakthrough year with Kyiv came the following season.

Still only 19 at the start of the campaign, Yarmolenko made 27 appearances for Kyiv throughout the season (starting all but one of those matches), scoring on seven occasions and providing a further four assists. The youngster also made his first appearances in the UEFA Champions League, with Barcelona and Inter among the Ukrainian side’s group opponents.

From 2010/11 onwards, Yarmolenko hit at least ten goals in each of the next seven seasons. His best single-season goal haul (15) was in his final full campaign with Kyiv, while a total of 14 assists in 2014/15 was his creative peak.

Yarmolenko at Dynamo Kyiv
Season Appearances Goals Assists
2007/08 1 1 0
2008/09 10 0 0
2009/10 27 7 4
2010/11 26 11 9
2011/12 28 12 7
2012/13 27 11 7
2013/14 26 12 6
2014/15 26 14 14
2015/16 23 13 10
2016/17 28 15 7
2017/18 5 3 1

After five league appearances for Kyiv at the start of the 2017/18 season, Yarmolenko signed for Borussia Dortmund for a reported €25m.

The Ukraine international’s first season outside of his home country was something of a disappointment, however, with Yarmolenko failing to recapture the form he had exhibited for several years in his homeland. The winger ended the season with three goals and five assists from 18 Bundesliga appearances – his worst attacking statistics in a decade – although injury did keep him out for two months earlier this calendar year.

Yarmolenko has a wealth of European experience to his name too, having made a combined 86 appearances in the Champions League and Europa League. The wide midfielder has scored on 20 occasions and set up as many goals in his European endeavours.

The Prospects

Yarmolenko’s struggles in Germany temper his consistently excellent returns in Ukraine and the concern for Hammers fans and FPL managers alike is whether the winger will once again flatter to deceive outside of his homeland.

Despite a so-so debut season with Dortmund, Yarmolenko’s underlying creativity statistics still bode well for his prospects this season. The wide-midfielder created a chance every 37 minutes in the Bundesliga in 2017/18, a better rate of key passes than any of his new team-mates in midfield – including Arnautovic.

It should also be noted that Yarmolenko’s impressive assist count for Kyiv doesn’t include many of the “Fantasy assists” that are rewarded in FPL.

Yarmolenko averaged a shot every 33.6 minutes for Dortmund, an only slightly inferior mean than Arnautovic (32.7), who played a large chunk of the season for West Ham as a striker. The Ukrainian winger’s minutes-per-chance rate beat all other Hammers’ midfielders, including Manuel Lanzini.

Yarmolenko started out his career with Kyiv on the left wing but soon became a permanent fixture on the opposite flank as an inverted winger in the Arjen Robben/Riyad Mahrez mould. Nineteen of the Ukrainian wide-midfielder’s 31 attempts on goal for Dortmund last season were from his left boot, underscoring his predilection for cutting inside onto his favoured foot.

With Andy Carroll and Manuel Lanzini out for extended periods and Javier Hernandez having participated in the World Cup this summer, Arnautovic could again be the focal point of the Hammers’ attack at the beginning of 2018/19, though further recruitment in the striking position would seem likely.

Either way, Yarmolenko should be a near-certain starter on his favoured right flank and help alleviate the goal-scoring burden carried by Arnautovic in Carroll and Lanzini’s absence.

Other than appealing home fixtures against Bournemouth and Wolves, West Ham have a difficult-looking start to 2018/19 (the Hammers play five of the “big six” in the first nine Gameweeks) and many of their assets are perhaps best avoided until the fixture schedule eases. That would give us ample time to assess Yarmolenko’s value as a mid-priced midfielder and whether he is worthy of consideration for our Fantasy squads – or indeed, like compatriot Andriy Shevchenko, if his move to the Premier League has come while his powers are on the wane.

This type of creative central figure of weaker teams should fit this role better than a bench option of one of the bigger sides at a similar price.

Seems fine but you are deprnding weekly on thr untestrd jota and espcially cairney but on the flip side you could easily upgrade those by sacrificing auba or kun depending. You must accept that sane aguero will not always start either. Looks decent for gameweek one all the same

I am wary about the City rotation but Sane didn't even go to the world cup so he's surely got to start the season.
Yeah that's why I got three expensive picks so that it allows for flexibility if Jota/Cairney doesn't work.

I think pickford is fools gold at the moment. Accept he is a good keeper but everton.... alardyce struggled to make a job of them defensively but I do think a lot of that was because he seemed to loose the dressing room. Players never really bought into him despite their initial run of a handful of games.

Pope may struggle with competition from heaton. His team may be wary for the 2st month or more considering they are involved in europe also.

So pick i think is the better gamble of those two but it is a gamble.

This game is a big gamble full stop

Seeing some people with triple Everton, which seems really risky to me. What guarantee do we have that Marco Silva will even do well with them? Relegated with Hull then a decent start at Watford followed by a horrible period. Thats his experience in the PL. If Everton start out poorly double/triple EVE teams will be in dire shape. Their fixtures are decent but they arent a good enough team to expect wins.

In the first 6 games they meet wol, SOU, bou, HUD, WHU, ars. How many games will they be favorites here? 2 out of 6?

Agree with this, one maybe, own two perhaps but three? Seems like people forget how bad these players are/were or really rate Silva, he would have to do some serious polishing of turds in the three month Summer break, not sure that's long enough to turn it around.

      1. stat
        8 years, 1 day ago

Sigurdsson is proven FPL gold, but was obviously hindered by an extremely defensive manager.
Coleman was out for most of the season but he looked good when he was fit.
Tosun got bonus points in all of the games that he scored in - 5 goals in 12 starts is not the worst record for a player new to the league, playing under Big Sam.

Everton should probably sign another CB (and perhaps an LB since Baines is getting old) but they don't have that bad of a team to be honest.

Being proven FPL Gold doesn't score points as last season proved, he/they still have to perform, there's no evidence that they will yet.

Seems like the colour coding of the fixtures is making Everton look better than they are.

They have a very old defence now which time is not being kind to, it's largely the same squad who looked so bad, not saying they can't improve but it's a case of playing no football in this last few months has made them better in fantasy managers eyes.

Those are all fair points but I'm really struggling to find alternatives to Coleman / Siggy / Tosun given their fixtures. Sure, perhaps the fixtures are making them look better than they are, but teams tend to do better in easier games than harder ones. They aren't exactly facing any decent defences in the first 6 weeks either.

PVA/Ramsey/Arnie are good alternatives. My point isnt that people shouldnt have any EVE players, just that 2-3 players seem a risky proposition for an unproven team.

Already have Tomkins and Guaita, so I don't want to treble up on Palace defensively.
Already have Ramsey, meanwhile I really don't like the look of Arnie's fixtures.
Most teams are "unproven teams" though, aren't they?

The point isn't that you can find alternatives, it's that Stat can't find alternatives. His team, his valuations. If he thinks they are the most valuable players of all time in FPL (for arguments' sake), what is the reason he should avoid the double or triple up?

When he makes a valuation of Sigurdsson, he has already taken into account the likelihood of him scoring goals in an Everton team.

When he makes a valuation of Coleman, he has already taken into account the likelihood of him scoring goals and getting clean sheets in an Everton team.

Putting them together does nothing to change the probability of returns and therefore any argument on "cover" or "baskets" should be disgarded. (except in situations in which your players may "rotate" and the like).

                That's my argument 🙂

                  8 years, 1 day ago

This - if I feel like Sigurdsson is a better option than Willian, then the fact that I have another 2 Everton players doesn't change that.

I didnt make the original post as a critique of Stat's team 🙂
I disagree that risk aversion in terms of avoiding tripling up on teams of fairly unknown ability is the same as the "cover" argument. I dont think cover makes sense at all as a concept in FPL.

                    I don't see how it's different.

You're critiquing teams with double and triple-up Everton. Stat is defending that position. I just used him as an example, but it could be anyone with two Everton players.

Also, if an FPL manager over- or under-values a particular factor (e.g. a team's likely form), then that's what creates diversity between all our teams. That's cool. I don't want everyone's teams to look the same out of their fear of added risk (which I don't think exists if they are picking players for the right reasons)

There's discussion of players, teams and tactics, which is great. But I kind of see the double- and triple-up smearing as scaremongering, limiting other people's teams because you don't have the kahoonas to do something yourself.

I haven't ever seen one good argument for what you're proposing. I guess that's the problem.

Many managers actively try to avoid being affected by this type of thinking, anyway, because they think it has no basis in rational decision-making. It's a myth; a mental block; a psychological bias.

If Everton's form dips, the FPL output of the players may dip. But if you buy a non-Everton player, they too will belong to a team, who's form may dip. So having 2 players from the same team doesn't matter. They are two independent points-producers who happen to belong to the same team. If Everton do well, both might do well; if Everton fail, both might also fail. But the probability of those events are not affected by having the both in the team, so it just doesn't matter.

The exception would be having a player from a different team would you could play while benching your Everton player. But this isn't the case when discussing Siggy, as you'll always play him; it isn't the case when discussing Pickford, because you can't rotate him with an outfield player; and if your third player is Holgate, it also doesn't apply because you'll never rotate him with Siggy, etc....

I have Coleman too but that's because I don't think City or Arsenal defenders are needed yet but for Siggy & Tosun, there are alternatives, it's a lot of eggs in a basket that shouldn't have this much confidence yet.

Going to Wolves in that first game won't be easy, Wolves will be buzzing for their return and they are a team who did well and are on the up, could go horribly wrong on day one, three seems massively risky to me but good luck all the same.

Depends on the players and the price. If you're talking about Pickford, Holgate and Tosun, for example, then it really doesn't matter that they belong to the same team.

If they don't sign another keeper then (from what I've read, at least) it seems likely that Klopp is going to give Ward a chance to be the first team keeper. Sure, you do run the risk of him making a mistake and being dropped, but you're also getting coverage of a defence that is superior to all other defences with a 4.5M starter.

He would be the best value keeper. For me, that ties my hands. I would have to get the best value player in the position and find alternatives to outfield pool players.

Actually, this might not be a problem for me as I currently have no pool players anyway. It's all hypothetical at this point, though.

Deulofeu has incredible potential. He's Watford's most nailed and dangerous attacker. Of course, there's the risk he continues to look dangerous without actually doing anything. At 5.5 it's a risk worth taking as it won't take much for him to make a mockery of that price tag.

Doherty (4.5) plays wingback for Wolves opposite Douglas (5.0). Why are people more drawn to Douglas for .5 more? Is Doherty nailed?

Douglas is on some FKs and corners from what I've read.
Also last season Doherty got 4 goals and 5 assists while Douglas got 5 goals and 14 assists (!).

Takes some set pieces and got 18 odd assists last season. Better end product basically

      Both potentially good options btw

Watched highlights of some wolves games last season and even preseason so far. Docherty looks very attacking and looked as though could have got more assists and goals than he actually registered.

He sounds like he could be a bit of a Robertson but 5m is having to play him every week, Boly at 4.5 is not.

You're also relying on Wolves to be on the front foot in all their games to repeat those numbers, they should do well but they won't dominate teams like they may have last year.

5m seems a bit much to me and I've had him in and out all Summer, Boly feels more comfortable to own, 3 goals and 2 assists seems more sustainable in the PL.

If you're going 4.5 though why not just pick Doherty then as he plays wingback? Does Doherty face much competition for that spot?

I was looking at their players on the who scored site and Boly ranked as their top player in the whole squad, it's that simple really, as good as a coin toss.

Hi all just signed up on here so first time at doing this, would appreciate any feedback on my team and advice

    Ederson
    Bailly, Matip, Tomkins (Cedric) (Peltier)
    Mkhitaryan, Mane, Mata Sane (Stephens)
    Firmino, Morata, Aguero

    0.5 in the bank.
    Cheers

Ederson a waste of a city asset in my opinion. Not sure about Bailly's play time. Are you confident in Mata providing returns...I do like the Morata punt however.

Ederson @ 5.5m is the best route into the City defence, and with those fixtures, the clean sheets should flow for the first 10 GWs

Why? He's the one defender who's nailed to play every game.

Thanks for your feedback there, definitely given me things to think. Regarding Bailly I plan to monitor how it looks during pre season but he is Man United's best CB when fit imo. Mata is definitely a risk and as you suggest I maybe better off looking for a better alternative

I may have cracked it... lemme know what you think.

    Ederson Patricio
    Robertson Azpi Coleman Tomkins Peltier
    Salah Mahrez Ramsey Deulofeu Cairney
    Aguero Tosun Kamara

1.0 ITB, and lots of options around the same price points as some of my players in case of poor performances etc!

I had Ederson and a 4.5m keeper for ages but don't think it's worth it, especially when you have 3 premium defenders too.
