Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw against Southampton at St Maryโ€™s with a wonder strike from Daniel James (ยฃ6.0m) proving to not be enough for Ole Gunnar Solsjkaerโ€™s side, who have won just one of their first four Premier League matches.

We look at the key Fantasy talking points from the south coast.

Southampton 1-1 Manchester United

  • Goals: Daniel James (ยฃ6.0m) | Jannik Vestergaard (ยฃ5.0m)
  • Assists: Scott McTominay (ยฃ5.0m) | Kevin Danso (ยฃ4.5m)
  • Bonus: Vestergaard, McTominay – 3, Gunn, James – 2

After signing from Swansea City for a ยฃ15m fee in the summer window, James was expected to play a part in Unitedโ€™s attacking armoury, but after four games it is evident that this is a player with the ability to make a significant, impactful contribution for the Red Devils in 2019/20.

Having cut in from the left flank, James drilled a superb strike beyond the reach of Angus Gunn (ยฃ4.5m) to assert an early level of control over the Saints, whilst also testing the Southampton goalkeeper on a number of occasions throughout the match.

Particularly given the potential absence of Anthony Martial (ยฃ7.7m), James is showing glimpses of a player who has the potential to excel for United in the goalscoring department, and once again on Saturday the Welshman, owned by just over 5% of managers, displayed his attacking prowess with a fine finish despite the bitterly disappointing scoreline.

It should be noted that James’ goal, as was the case against Palace last weekend, came when he was stationed on the left wing and his FPL appeal going forward perhaps partly hinges on where Solskjaer will deploy him, with a role on the right flank arguably not suited to his skill set (as evidenced against Wolves).

For Unitedโ€™s defensive quartet of Harry Maguire (ยฃ5.5m), Victor Lindelof (ยฃ5.5m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (ยฃ5.6m) and Ashley Young (ยฃ5.4m), who was recalled after an injury to Luke Shaw (ยฃ5.5m), Saturdayโ€™s game marked yet another failure to keep a clean sheet, though they did show defensive resilience.

The Red Devils were denied a shut-out when Jannik Vestergaard (ยฃ5.0m) rose highest after a chipped ball into the box from Kevin Danso (ยฃ4.5m) to draw Southampton level.

A start didn’t materialise for budget FPL forward Mason Greenwood (ยฃ4.5m), while Marcus Rashford (ยฃ8.6m) was unable to reward his 24.7% of owners with any attacking returns despite looking dangerous at times.

The 21-year-old has now blanked in two consecutive fixtures after starting the season with successive attacking returns.

In the context of Unitedโ€™s ambitions for the season, this was another blow for the club but also highlighted the fragile nature of their defence. If Unitedโ€™s defensive assets are to be considered long-term, viable options for Fantasy managers, then games against Crystal Palace (h) and Southampton (a) should be viewed as having considerable clean sheet potential.

Yet two successive failures to keep out the opposition will mean ownership of United defenders comes under further scrutiny over the international break ahead of Gameweek 5, with testing games against attacking sides such as West Ham and Arsenal coming up in their next three fixtures.

Whilst the likes of Sofiane Boufal (ยฃ5.5m) and Danny Ings (ยฃ6.0m) did test United with several incisive runs, the Saints had shown no real signs of having a goalscoring threat prior to Vestergaardโ€™s opener, with Southamptonโ€™s fortunes in front of goal epitomised by Che Adams (ยฃ5.8m) in the 55th minute: Adams was played through on goal with just David de Gea (ยฃ5.6m) to beat but fluffed his lines to make it a fourth blank in a row for the ยฃ15m summer signing from Birmingham.

An injury to Nathan Redmond (ยฃ6.4m) meant that an opportunity emerged in the starting line-up for Boufal, and the Moroccan did look sharp at times though lacked an end product.

On the basis of Saturdayโ€™s game against United, despite looking promising at points, investment in Southamptonโ€™s attacking options such as Ings and Adams is a difficult decision to justify with Tottenham (a) and Chelsea (h) on the horizon in their next four fixtures.

As Southampton appeared to be in the ascendancy, a second yellow for Danso meant that Hassenhuttlโ€™s side were forced to play out the final 15 minutes with ten men, though the south coast side held on to build on their impressive victory over Brighton in Gameweek 3 with a valuable point against Solsjkaerโ€™s men.

This was a game that served as a reminder towards Southamptonโ€™s ability to defy the odds against supposedly superior opposition, but the main headline will inevitably lie with Unitedโ€™s inability to see off โ€˜lesserโ€™ opposition who, unlike Solsjkaerโ€™s side, are unlikely to be competing for a spot in the top six.

On the basis of this showing at St Maryโ€™s, itโ€™s unlikely that United will be doing anything more than that, either.

              Just going by FFFix says 44.
              Doubt if there are zeros in top 1k.
              It could be something to do with Kun who affects scores by 25% I suppose.

      Most ghost teams will have Aguero captain and Vardy/Aguero combo nets 48 points alone.

      Nothing much points wise between top 100k and top 1m.

      I may never own Pukki but I will fear him every week.

      Bizarrely and not sure why but I went differential in Wesley for GW3, (sold Origi) so I keep a score check since:

    That Kevin friend decision against villa.. I don't even understand the rules anymore. Grealish got tackled and made a pass while falling down and dint even claim a penalty and lansbury scored.. And VAR doesn't even reverse that decision? How is that even possible? Thag caveat of VAR only makes a decision if they feel a referee has made a huge mistake and not a minor one leaves a lot of grey area and makes it a bit useless tbh

    1. Rhinos
      7 years, 1 month ago

      the ref blew his whistle. Be farcical to have VAR rule on whether the defenders were affected by hearing the whistle

    2. FPL Forward Thinker
      7 years, 1 month ago

      This and Harry Kane penalty claim last week. Newcastle lad desperately dived into Kane’s legs and fouled him.
      I don’t get it but I smell conspiracy.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        7 years, 1 month ago

        I think it should be VAR overrules ref completely if required.. And not try to agree with the ref so the ref doesn't look bad. Anyway hopefully it's gets better over the season.

        Behave.

    3. KujaliaFC
      7 years, 1 month ago

      Why did the ref blow if it wasn't a penalty?

      1. Valar(Keith)
        7 years, 1 month ago

        The ref booked grealish for diving and crossed the goal. VAR could've atleast reversed the diving decision and given a penalty if they couldn't give the goal due to the whistle being blows. Worst bit of refereeing I've seen in my life. Ref should be jsut waited 2 seconds instead of blowing his whistle and that was a clear goal.

        1. RubeRx
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

          that was the whole point of VAR, to correct clear and obvious errors

          not check every offside to the millimeter

          guess since diving is a judgement call that cant be reviewed?

    4. Eze Really?
      7 years, 1 month ago

      Referees pay scale must be higher and they can sack a VAR official if they want.
      VAR people have proven to be chicken shxts so far.
      The ball touching the hand rule is the most bizarre so far. And that is not VAR!

    Finally my defence delivered and a surprise 11 points from Robinson

    Was going to do Kane & Martial > Barnes & Sterling but luckily went with Kane & Martial > Agüero (C) & Mount

    Question is do I now build on my good fortune and wildcard to improve my squad, which has several 'weaknesses'? Greenwood > Abraham, Robertson > Digne, KWP > Lowton, Montoya > Lundstram gets me this:

    Heaton, Pope
    Digne, VvD, Zinchenko, Lowton, Lundstram
    Salah, KdB, Mount, Robinson, Dendoncker
    Agüero, Pukki, Abraham

    Thanks

      Think they may be a bit vulnerable at the back without Laporte so would go triple in attack if you can

      I think Zinchenko is good value personally (assuming you have sterling and kdb already?)

      Attack. Otamendi makes errors every game. Doubt their defence will keep cleanies without Laporte.

          Its small margins at the moment for big rank gains. Big Arsenal win today and an Everton clean sheet and you are probably back in the top 250k.

      What would be the impact elsewhere? Assuming you’d need to downgrade somewhere for TAA over Digne.

        It would either be:

        - Rashford + AWB to Haller + TAA
        - Rashford + KWP or Mina to Haller + Digne

        As I have Mina I suppose getting Trent would be better but eventually I want to replace Mina with Digne

          Take TAA now, and if you can upgrade Mina to Digne at a later date then do it.

    Ederson - Ryan
    Robbo - VVD - AWB - Digne - Lundstram
    Martial - KDB - Salah - McGinn - Ceballos
    Pukki - Haller - Greenwood

    Where are the weak spots? Am thinking doing something like this:

    A) Martial & Greenwood -> Cantwell & Abraham (-4)
    B) Martial, Greenwood & Ederson -> Mount, Abraham & Pope (-8)
    C) Martial, Greenwood & AWB -> Mount, Abraham & Soyuncu (-8)

    Reluctant to take a -8, also not sure I want Cantwell as much as I want Mount. Maybe being too hasty in getting rid of Man Utd assets, but it’s not clear when Martial will be back and a clean sheet doesn’t seem like it’s coming any time soon.

    2FTs and 0.4 ITB. I really don't like my forward options, although Ings looked lively yesterday.

    A) King -> Barnes
    B) Greenwood + Robertson -> Pieters + Abraham
    C) King + Ings + Martial -> Abraham + Haller + Ceballos (-4)
    D) Other

    Button, Montoya, Cantwell, Greenwood

  28. Nabs Kebabs

    The poster "Minus Four" has inspired me to go more aggressive with taking hits. Did Kane, Rashford -> Kun(c), Haller (-4) this GW. Going to wait a bit but probably doing Kyle Walker Peters, Martial -> TAA, James (-4). Absolutely could blow up in my face next GW but long term see a lot of value in the latter 2 so want to get them in early. This style of play feels a lot more liberating.

    1. Maddamotha
      7 years, 1 month ago

      I saw this. I've always been like you, hate to take hits. I did not take a hit this GW either with Martial injured, almost did Martial > Mount, but decided against it, and that was the right decision.

      Why get rid of Martial tho, if he is ready for next gw? Great value imo. I dont see James sustaining his output, and both of his last goals has come from the left side, which is where he is most comfterable, but he wont play there with everyone fit. Could work tho, ofc.

      1. Nabs Kebabs
        7 years, 1 month ago

        I just don't trust Martial to fulfill his potential. He doesn't seem to have the right attitude to perform consistently and regularly gets injured. James looks very hungry and has simply just been too impressive from the eye test. I also think it's just so important not to be stubborn when someone like him emerges as if you miss getting him in when cheap it can leave you miles behind the pack.

        1. Maddamotha
          7 years, 1 month ago

          Look at Martial's stats. Goal per 90min is pretty good, played around 1600min last two seasons and got 15 attacking returns, so if he plays a whole season, you can double that (if he sustains his output ofc). He has started off well this season too, with 2 goals and 1 assist in 3 games. Im def keeping if fit.

    2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      7 years, 1 month ago

      I took a hit this week as well, first time in ages - KWP & Martial > VVD & Mount

      Even though KWP & Martial didn’t even play, the hit only netted me 2 extra points... and that was because Cantwell & Lundstram only got 3 between them...

      If either of those two had got even one return I’d have been negative from it, so they can be very difficult to make work in your favour

      But yeah being promiscuous with the old hit button can probably be very liberating... like all promiscuity however, just prepare for those mornings when you’ll be waking up thinking “what have I done!”
