Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of West Ham United.

The Hammers will find 2020/21 a tough act to follow as they flirted with a UEFA Champions League qualification spot before finishing on their highest top-flight points total in 35 years.

There were success stories across the park in FPL, too, with assists aplenty from defence and goals flowing further forward.

Price hikes for a number of key assets were inevitable so we’ll assess the Fantasy appeal of David Moyes’s side ahead of 2021/22 in this piece, which takes Opta player and team data from our Premium Members Area.

Think I am starting with Pepe vs BRE GW1 then transfer in Gundo/Torres vs NOR GW2. I know it can be risky pencilling in transfers but has a lot of upside. Brentford worst defence of the promoted sides who also love to get forward, think there will be space for arsenal and Pepe to exploit.

Nothing wrong with having a plan, pepe not a player often mentioned on here but dont be put off by that. Go for it!

Think more people would have him if he didn't have Chelsea and City in first 3, but yeah i don't mind i enjoy going for these upside chasing moves

Im wondering if I can do the same with a CH player, go for their first fixture then off to a MC player

I would love to be able to go Mount to Mahrez then to Raph over the first 3 weeks but yeah, that sort of planning never works out

Yepp could very much be fruitful, you fancy Mount over Havertz? Im gonna go for it just the one week not two. I prefer Mahrez vs ARS than Raphina vs bur gw3 tbh. Raph in gw5 if not starting with him, I'm happy to play my bench player if someone gets injured/red first gw which i suspect is unlikely to happen anyways.

Could work. Not sure Gundo/Torres is the answer though.

Will assess city with community shield and gw1, if Gundo plays false 9 or similar to how he did on his run last year why not, or if Torres is deployed as a ST. Obviously the likes of KDB, Mahrez seem more lucrative but can see city scoring 3,4,5 so they could very much be involved.

Morning. Been playing around I've somehow found a team I don't hate with 1.0M left over
Things will obviously change but with this loose structure-

    Sanchez
    TAA Dias Coufal
    Salah Raphina Bruno Buendia
    Toney Wilson Watkins

    4.0 Cody Brownhill 4.0
    1.0 M ITB

    Sanchez to Henderson? Leaves 0.5M
Brownhill to Smith Rowe 5.5? Leaves 0
Happy to have one dead spot 4.0 def
    Cody could be any 4.5
Loose plan of Bunedia to Saka/ Leeds mid when fixtures turn
Have I spent too much in def with so many 'good' 4.5 defenders about?

Any general thoughts really welcome, would love to be able to keep a little in the bank for once to ride out early price changes (wont happen!)

    Thanks for any thoughts

Looks good. I currently have same structure but with 0.5 of your cushion burnt on a 4.5 fifth defender to enable easyish possible switch to 4-4-2, downgrading a 7.5 fwd to fodder and bringing Son on for Buendia after 2-3 weeks.
Wouldn’t bother with ESR given your front 3. (Unless he demonstrates he’s worthy to be a 4th mid!)

Cheers for your input, really interesting plan you have.
Another way to get to Son, with 1M ITB, is Bruno to Sancho and Buendia can be Son. Depends on how Sancho looks

Would love to see Sancho demonstrate worth and go the route you suggest, keeping 3 playing strikers. I think there’s heaps of potential in the 7.5s and Toney.

Yeah, when i write it down
            Sancho and Son
            vs
            Bruno and Buendia

            its close

Yeah all fine. I’d use the spare money for either a second goalkeeper or fifth defender. Coady isn’t ideal either. Ben White, Luke Ayling, Webster, Lowton/Taylor all better options for now.

      I have same front three.

    Hi All,

I guess a few folk are moving away from Samchez for their 'keeper, what with White away and Dunk & Lamptey crocked? Have seen Hendo in a few teams. I have Shaw, and so don't particularly want to double up. Anyone else worth a look...?

Is Jota at 7.5m worth that 30 mins. Cameo? Or will he be starting because if he does I think I would want him in my team will be playing 4 forwards as Jota will be deployed FW role

I am currently sitting on Salah and Bruno in midfield. But funds are limited of course, so i have gone for Raphinha and Saka. What i really want is Grealish beside Salah and Bruno. Antonio, Watkins, Nacho is my frontline.

That is what i am currently thinking about. if i work out that 8 mill spot before season start, i can swap to Havertz etc. if needed, more easy than from 2 x 6.5 mids.
I am also very motivated to keep all three 7.5 strikers. I am holding one spot ready for Jimenez, so i will see which one i will swap out when Wolves fixtures gets good.

    So eighter :
    A. Grealish, 5.5 midfield, 4.5 Defender.

    B. Raphinha, Saka, Coufal.

Hye want to ask opinion. Is it pick and left strategy(unless injured) is going to get you to top 500k at least but not a dead team. Just wonder if i can keep with one captain till the end. Salah most obviously choice. Has anyone try it before?

You could say that Lateriser's Upside Chasing strategy is 'pick and leave'. The idea is to focus your transfers on 2 or 3 premium players that you intend to captain.
Another strategy is, as you suggest, perma-cap Salah. It's quite a common strategy.
But leaving your sub-prime players for the whole season is not going to work unless you're ridiculously lucky.

Interesting state of affairs in the top 4 with 2 weeks to go

    - Man City have gone backwards (Aguero out, no-one in)
    - Chelsea same (More squad bloat with RLC, Barkley, Gallagher, Batshuyai & Amapadou back from loans)
    - Liverpool - VVD close to being back, and Konate signed… but Gini will be a massive loss
    - Man Utd - filled 2x problem positions with high calibre signings - Sancho & Varane

GW1 starting to come into view soon, and transfer window slamming shut soon after that

    1. Bushwhacker
      • 7 Years

City didn’t need Aguero last year and don’t this. Chelsea have a great squad also. United are trying to buy the league while everyone else is saving gundpowder for a return to normalcy and income. Could be a good bet. Liverpool got the cover they needed. Gini is a massive loss IMHO but they do have a plethora of players to fill it IF they can step up (Nabby lad looking at you, Ox also … but Fabinho, Hendo and Thiago are already there too).

It’ll be about consistency and no covid.

If the music stopped now you wouldn’t find a single City, Chelsea or Liverpool fan who’d be happy with their transfer window

It’ll be very interesting to see what these guys pull out of the bag in the next 14 days with GW1 fast approaching - hard to believe how fast the time is flying

I'm expecting important transfer activity in the next few weeks concerning those clubs.
Liverpool and Chelsea will prune their peripherals - H Wilson, Origi and others to leave; Chelsea too as always - Abraham, Batshuyi, Barkley, Amapdou, RLC, CHO - on loan or otherwise. And others we've forgotten about. We're at the haggling over nickels and dimes stage right now.
City, Chelsea, maybe Liverpool and United all to bring in one key, high-profile first team player.

It's a bit awkward that TDD is after 3 matches and an international break interferes. I'm hoping to hold off my WC until not just the end of the post-transfer first international break, but 1 or 2 further GWs so those key new signings get a chance to bed in.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

There surely has to be massive activity in the next 2-3 weeks

Like 200-300m’s worth between City & Chelsea alone

I find it hard to believe those two are going to run the risk of going backwards (standing still is going backwards in this league)

That Chelsea squad in particular just looks far too bloated at the minute - couldn’t be a good atmosphere on the training ground or dressing room with 10-15+ professionals knowing they each stand to play single digits of league games each for a season

        1. Bushwhacker
          • 7 Years

Lots of pruning little buying I suspect. There’s no money, United are gambling by spending 120m ; Haaland won’t move till next year, neither will Kane. Liverpool have their eyes on a couple of somewhat punty buys (IMHO) they should wait and throw the Nike cash at MBappe next year. I would not be surprised if the Kane, Haaland and MBappe moves are agreed i principal this year and done next summer. City are spenders but not to excessive amounts for a single player. Chelsea would but its really hard to argue they need anyone.

Yeah agree there's probably a bit of complacency there on the part of both City & Chelsea,

Either that or lack of ability to get the deals they need done - neither can be positive for the clubs & am sure their fans are starting to look at the calendars a bit more regularly as the days drop off in the run up to both GW1 & TDD

Stones will be rotated along with Laporte, and Ake will get minutes in some of the easier home bankers too

The Norwich game looks rife for Pep to spin the wheel for example

      1. Bushwhacker
        • 7 Years

Be interesting to see but I don’t think so. Dias/Stones were watertight last year and added in up front on set pieces. With Laporte they always conceeded ; Ake wasn’t match fit but was a disaster. CBs are players you don’t have to rotate, Pep doesn’t ask them to go box to box ; I think City will lockdown the roles early.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years

Not sure - City had a great run of cleansheets when Laporte was first injured & subsequently lost his place

But towards the end of the season there were definite signs of the old Stones brain farts starting to creep back in again for me

He was bad in the 2-0 defeat to Man Utd at the Etihad & Pep dropped him for the next game vs southampton...

He came back with a mega-haul vs fulham with goal & cleansheet, but that was fulham... Pep benched him next game again away at Leciester (I think he was worried about Vardy & Nacho's guile against Stones) - where Dias & Laporte were very solid & kept a cleansheet in a massive 2-0 win (utd were breathing down their necks at that stage)

Pep brought him back for what was perceived as a "Lower risk" home game to a tired-looking Leeds - and Stones was shocking alongside Ake, City getting beat 2-1 to 10 men... he was all over the place again for Villa's early goal in the next game, before that horror-challenge & red card (what on earth was he doing that far out??) just before half time, suspended for the next couple (which meant Laporte came in for the league games and would have been stretched to play in the 2x Dortmund games midweek), benched for newcastle, then came back for the 3-2 defeat by Brighton, where City again were all over the place at the back

He was also caught in possesion early on in the CL final resulting in Werner's early big chance (but it was Werner so didn't result in a goal)... and was again positionally suspect for Chelsea's goal

I could definitely see Pep sharing duties between all four of them this season (when all are fit) - especially for the "easier" home bankers - the likes of Norwich look rife for rotation

Unless he starts to play 3 centrebacks regularly - in that case then yeah Stone, Laporte, Ake would be much more regular starters - but even then he loves playing Walker in a 3-at-the-back so you never know with this Pep man

Citys first 5 fixtures could realistically get you 3-4 cs. They are one of the best defences in the league. But the rotation factor is denting his appeal.

    Thoughts on this Lot?

    Sanchez
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Digne Shaw
    Salah Mahrez
    Wilson Watkins Antonio

    Sarr Brownhill Gilmour

    1M ITB for a potential Mahrez> Son .

Can downgrade Cancelo to Ayling and upgrade Sarr and go to a 433 . But quite like the value in defence.

Hey guys, thoughts on this team for BB in GW 1 or 2 ?

    Sanchez | Bachmann
    Tierney | TAA | Targett | Veltman | Fofana
    ESR | Jota | Fernandes | Buendia | Mané
    Watkins | Antonio | Welbeck

    - I will be WC in either GW 4 or 5
    - If Willock returns to Newcastle I’ll be replacing Buendia with him which gives me 0.5 to use

Morning all, what are people's thoughts on GKs? I am currently on Sanchez but I fancy going for a 4.5 player with 4.0 understudy. Bachmann is in a defensive team and could Raya be this season's Meslier in an attacking team?

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 16 Years
      5 years, 1 month ago

I have a great hunch for Meslier this season

There's a fair bit of data to support it too, but a definite strong "spidey-sense" for a big season from the big man

I'm starting with Pickford for the early fixtures with a plan to shift to Meslier on my wildcard.
Of 4.5s, Sanchez also has the opening fixtures on his side.

      2. Haa-lala-land
        • 5 Years

I really like Meslier, but he eats up a valuable Leeds spot, as one of the three tops. Some point id also want BamBam, Harisson, Firpo, Raphina I expect.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 1 month ago

Yes, that's the only reason I'd hesitate on Meslier. Same logic applies to Hendo, whereas I don't see the same problem with Pickford. I can't see myself wanting more than Digne and DCL in terms of outfield Toffees.

Starting with Sanchez for now but may switch to Meslier when I WC down the line.

The looming threat of DDG puts me off Henderson. Also, I feel like at some point I *may* want to triple up on UTD with Bruno + Sancho + Shaw

B with Cancelo (assuming you've some bench cover).

    Sanchez

Yeah, Cavani is my only "punty" option really, the rest are pretty template. I quite fancy him to bag a couple of goals in the early fixtures. Plenty of good attacking options in the £6.5 - 8.5 bracket to bail to in case he does not light it up. Feel like the risk is minimal.

I like the double Pool defence - set and forget! With VVD hopefully back and Konate we should be able to get some more CS this season.
