Our Meet the Manager series is back for the 2021/22 season, as Joe continues his regular catch-up with some of the community’s best and most interesting Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

As usual, this video and podcast series focuses on those with an incredible rank history but we are adding to that.

This year we will be including managers with an interesting story to tell about how FPL is impacting on their lives, irrespective of rank.

We’ll also focus on managers who are offering unique insight and research into the game to propel them – and hopefully us – up the rankings.

Our latest video is no exception, with sports psychologist Ross Dowsett joining Joe this week to chat about his latest book which looks at how psychology can help FPL managers.

This chat focuses on how Ross plans to use the psychological theories and ideas he is studying to improve his performance, using examples of why he has gone wrong in the past.

Joe and Ross (@FPL__Raptor) discuss the biases that prevent FPL managers from achieving a stellar finish and how to address them.

They also chat about why the time of day transfers are made is important. The science behind ‘dullard’ and ‘maverick’ managers is also on the agenda.

With the 2021/22 season in mind, Joe takes a look at Ross’s Gameweek 1 side to see how he is already putting psychology into action ahead of the new campaign.

Joe and Ross’s chat is available as a podcast as well as video via Fantasy Football Scout’s Youtube channel.

Do we expect Ings to start?

2 up top, reshuffle to 4-4-2 after Grealish exit

A lot of Villa fans think they'll stick with the formation and have:

          Ings
          Watkins Buendia Bailey

Watkins played as a winger for years at Brentford so this seems likely imo

So picking Ings over Watkins could work

Who knows, Watkins was a bit ineffective at times at ST, he might better on the wing cutting in with pace etc

I'd imagine Traore rotates with Bailey, although he's currently injured. As for El Ghazi, probably a bench warmer

This is what I feared - whether it's 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 I suspect Watkins will be pushed out wide, where Grealish used to play.

Could it benefit him more though?
Kinda like how Salah/Auba always seem to do better on the wing compared to centrally

Possible. Watkins had good stats at Brentford as a wide man. Will probably wait for the final pre season game to see how he fares.

Ill probably start with Ings but keep an eye out for Watkins

  2. Alisson WondHaaland

Really tempted by Ings despite his injury record.

Has had a good rest, been involved in pre-season and Villa's squad is quite something now.

I seem to think he's a bit more like Luke Shaw in that he's had a freak injury and has been unlucky but isn't as injury prone as we think he is.

His 19/20 season was quite something and was proof that he can go a full season injury free.

With no Europe to worry about either I probably prefer him over Antonio (Although Im tempted to get both)

    Still my main draft, change my mind - players in every position capable of attacking returns;

    Bachmann
    Trent | Robbo | Shaw
    Bruno | Son | Raphinha | Sarr | ESR*
    Kane | Pukki

    Foster | Veltman | Livramento | Obafemi

    *ESR could also be Cantwell/Dallas

There is absolutely no reason to be going for Kane instead of Salah

This is my GW2/long term plan and structure.

        Kane out GW1, simple - Kane/Raph become Toney/Salah

        1. Scapegoat Salah
          • 9 Years

And that simple shuffle right there to get Salah is how I know this is the structure for me 🙂

ESR has City and Chelsea GW2-3, Pukki has insanely tough first 4 fixtures, dislike both these picks greatly. Not a fan of Sarr's short term fixtures either.

Pukki good scoring record vs top half teams. He thrives in those kind of games more.
ESR more of a placeholder, may even go Cantwell if he goes Villa.

I expect Watford to start with a bit of a spring in their step and think he’ll be central to it, their talisman these days so to speak

That’s annoying, would probably go 4-5-1 then and start Veltman.
He has nearly 2 weeks though, should be ok

Kane is on holiday. No chance he starts week 1 wherever he is. Don't let our stage name influence your selection.

Imo theres no reason to start with Kane with the ongoing transfer saga especially given the opening fixture is City vs Spurs.

Otherwise decent picks, cant justify Pukki with those opening fixtures though

      1. Scapegoat Salah
        • 9 Years

Thanks - see above. See this as my long term structure I plan. Very easy for me to switch Kane and Raph to Toney and Salah if required for GW1

Hmmm interesting. Not convinced about the fixture proof part, he did start well in 19/20 which happened to be against a few tough sides but I dont think he was exactly fixture proof over the season

Leicester may only play 1 up front when Barnes is back. Also Daka to take minutes away

Then Villa signed Ings who may plug straight in as a lone striker

Posters were dismissive of me getting Vardy. But I am willing to pay the extra for certainty in a very good side and on pens.
Plan is to move him on about gw4 for Kane or whoever.
I looked at a few 'experts' drafts and they all seem to going for Watkins, Toney then Wilson/Iheanacho
Personally I think my are blinded to other options are are missing a trick.

Don’t see them both starting? Smith used Watkins as a winger at Brentford for most of the season

Yeah but if he's a winger he's effectively POO. Tough choice. He may still be alright. If Iheanacho starts the Charity Shield I'll probably risk it.

If Ings starts in Villa's final pre season match, Ill probably go for him instead. Double up is too much since Im not too keen on them after the first 3 fixtures

Watkins will still be a decent option regardless but will probably be more of a winger

If he's a winger he's not a decent option. Raphinha is a winger and costs 6.5m....

He had very good stats from the wing back in the championship. He'll be more of a goal scoring winger imo

I'm not interested if he's a winger for Villa. If he played for a top team that score lots than sure but I'm not convinced. 7.5m is a lot to pay. The comparable mids are better.

He will be nailed with Watkins out wide

Ings can't play every game, his injury record speaks for itself.

I really like Mahrez. He has a full preseason with City, he was nailed last year, competition on the right isn't that bad.

He is low owned with a high ceiling and he is at a very nice price point that allows me to go up to Sancho or down to Havertz pretty easily.

I'm gonna have him in my starting team unless he picks up an injury before the start of the season.

I considered him because Pep loves him and he started a long run of games early last season. The thing I find with city players is they seem to take fpl points off each other they could win 5-0 and your player ends up with 2 points. But assisted the assister etc.
But I went for the safer option in Son, love the way he plays always full of energy and a smile on his face. Plus the fact he is likely on pens swayed me.

As a matter of interest do we know who Man City's pen taker is or is it first come first served?

Mahrez will probably start the season as he's had a decent rest and is looking like the key man in pre-season.

Taking a punt on Stones (especially if he plays in the community shield).

Top scoring PPG defender last year and I think Pep has maybe settled on Dias and Stones as his first choice centre back pairing

Due to the amount of pre-season he's had, Imo he is absolutely nailed for GW 1 (barring an injury). From then on its probably back to roulette but judging from the competition he has, his pre season form and patterns from last year, many people believe he will get at least 4 starts in the first 6 GWs of which people are hoping one is Norwich in GW 2
