Using LiveFPL’s vast array of tools, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

We will examine the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – but chiefly those in the top 10k in the current overall rankings.

Between the two groups (where there will of course be some overlap), these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the growing number of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

There is heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10k figures on the LiveFPL site, of course, such as ownership stats for different rank tiers.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 29 CAPTAINCY

Above: Gameweek 29 captaincy stats for the top 10k (left) and the all-time greats (right)

Let’s get the easy bit out of the way first: after a wide-open captaincy race and a polarising set of scores in Gameweek 28, the vast majority of the leading managers handed the armband to Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) this time around.

Almost 98% of the FPL bosses who used their Triple Captain chip backed the Egyptian, unsurprisingly.

READ MORE: Everything Jurgen Klopp said about Mohamed Salah’s injury

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

There were a fair few Bench Boosts deployed in the top 10k this week but the Triple Captain was the most popular chip, with not far off one in four of the leading bosses using it.

Fewer than one in five FPL managers in the top 10,000 still have three or more chips to use, whilst not far off half (45.9%) have either maxed out their allocation or have only one chip remaining.

Bench Boosters have had a good start to the Gameweek, with Crystal Palace v Manchester City and six more ‘doublers’ to follow in the coming days.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD FOR GAMEWEEK 29

While the ‘template’ goalkeepers and forward-line remained unchanged compared to Gameweek 28, there were a few notable tweaks elsewhere.

Andrew Robertson (£7.2m), Kieran Tierney (£5.1m) and especially Matt Doherty (£4.8m) all saw interest spike, with Lucas Digne (£5.1m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and the injured Reece James (£6.2m) falling out of favour.

In midfield, the Spurs duo of Son Heung-min (£10.9m) and Dejan Kulusevski (£6.2m) came to the fore at the expense of Villa pair Jacob Ramsey (£4.8m) and Joao Coutinho (£7.4m).

OWNERSHIP STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 29

TOP 10K: TEMPLATE WILDCARD SQUAD

The template Wildcard squad is unsurprisingly big on Gameweek 29 ‘doublers’: there are 10 of these players in total, with budget fillers accounting for the other five.

Gameweek 30 has also been factored in, with nine of this XV in action in the upcoming decimated round.

TOP 10K: AVERAGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS OWNED PER TEAM FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 30

The average manager within the top 10k will likely require a hit or two to get a full playing XI out in Gameweek 30, although with only four fixtures to choose from, some FPL bosses may settle for 9 or 10 assets with an unaffected fixture.

The two north London clubs account for well over half of the 8.511 average, with Bukayo Saka (£6.6m) the most widely owned player.

with pool having Man city fixture in gw32 sandwiched between 2 UCL games, is there a chance Robbo get a rest vs Watford in gw31?

I think Tsimikas plays in the FA Cup on Sunday. Robertson doesn't have any international games over the break. That would then be a 17 days rest between games so probably better to get some playing time than rest him.

I think i have the ones i would want except that Leicester mid or forward (this is so Kelechi time) and that Brentford cb that scores on a header from a set piece, Jansson? I will put a tenner on the last one, thats a given this week. Leicester to concede from set piece.
And alway some strange guy comes up with a megahaul, Podence?

(Dubravka, TAA, Rudiger, Salah, Adams, Broja)

        So 9 players for GW30.

If you replace a forward it should be a forward you want for a while.

Otherwise I wouldn't bother. How often will you play Toney?

Depends. But beyond GW30 (LEI), I could see him starting in GW32 (WHU), GW33 (WAT), GW36 (SOU), GW37 (EVE), GW38 (LEE).

Adams is likely to go after GW31 (LEE). Probably for fodder to invest more heavily in midfield.

i have 0itb and am now kind of snookered in my next move, ideally i'd like to do Digne & Broja to Matip (who doesn't play) and (Hwang possibly injured) as the funds work out exactly, i still might do the Matip move and hobble through 30 with what i have as i think its enough not to use FH, and i don't want to sell any other player without a game except Broja since i won't be able to afford to buy them back 🙁

Confused whether to go all-in for a few teams (Leicester attack, Wolves defense, Arsenal) or spread the risk with the best attacking players from 7 teams + GK, defenders from 4 different teams (Leicester, Wolves, Arsenal, Spurs)?

I know, but I have already hit the button since I had only 6 players. 3 Spurs, 2 Arsenal, Ait Nouri. Moreover, I did not want to sell any of my 3 Liverpool, 2 Man City players - which stores the funds. So, it had to be a FH.

ManUtd are no great shakes and West Ham are far from watertight defensively, if I wasn't for Bowen they'd have a lot less wins in recent weeks. Spurs are Spurs, can be good but rarely are a team you wouldn't want to face because of defensive prowess.

My week 30 team has 9 possible starters ( 8 if Digne out)

With .9 m in bank any changes you would make? Trouble with defence is I don’t see decent option as alternative for Digne that would want going further ( Coady possibly and triple Wolves defence)

    Doherty Saïss Digne*
    Coutinho Kulusevski Saka
    Kane Lacazette

Ramsdale TAA Robertson Salah Gordon Broja

I am probably doing Digne->Amartey.Decent fixture, save a lot of money and gives you a more balance defence. You could even upgrade Gordon in gw31 and bench Broja.

Amartey should lose starting spot soon, no?

Likely with Fofana getting back to fitness. I wouldn't go there.

I don't know Pompel.I guess when Evans is back he will be on the bench but his performances are really good.

Guess I have to monitor him more closely as well, would be a good enabler if he keeps his spot, and extra games too

Sideways to Cash possibly? But you probably don't want Villa defenders long term.

Wouldn't triple up on Wolves defence. Might work out this week but do you want to be stuck with triple Wolves?

What did you pay for Gordon? Any chance of an upgrade there? Bit leftfield but can you get to Eriksen? Martinelli would be nice but you're already maxed on Arsenal.

If news is Salah is out injured for Arsenal then might it be worth considering selling this week? If he ends up missing Watford then all good. If he's fit you could get him back again in GW31.

What would you advise on my team (post above yours)?

    Best option please

    Sa (Foster)
    White Coady Doherty (TAA Rudiger)
    Saka Son Coutinho (Salah Havertz)
    Laca Jiminez (Broja)

    1ft, 0.3itb

    A)
    gw30 Salah + Broja ➡️ Kane + Barnes (-4)
    gw31 Son + Coutinho ➡️ Salah + Gordon (-4)

    B)
    gw30 Salah + Laca ➡️ Kane + Maddison (-4)
    gw31 Son ➡️ Salah

Leaning towards A as gives extra player for 30 and gets rid of Broja.

    Thanks in advance

Not really keen on the idea of ending up with fodder mid spot in A. Are you really determined to play 3 up front still?

Yeah fair point. Already played BB so getting some fodder puts more money back in the starting 11 and gordon has a few dgws coming up but
agree there are better options in midfield than up front. Cheers

Only fielding 8 at, but most of the bases covered:

    Ramsdale
    Saiss Doherty
    Saka Ramsey Kulu
    Kane(c) Laca

Bench : TAA Rüdi t.Silva Gray Salah Weghorst
    1FT 0.5 itb

Gray and Weggie the only ones I want to lose, or T.Silva at a stretch, which means budget of max £12.5m, with one hit max. Maxed out on Arsenal and Spurs, so looking at:

    A) Weggie -> Toney
    B) Gray -> one of Eriksen/Podence/Neves/Benrahma
    C) Both of the above for a hit
    D) Gray + T.Silva -> Barnes/Maddison + Coady for a hit

    Opinions much appreciated !

Txs,getting in early on Maddi could hopefully pay off. Regarding defenders I think I''ll just go with the safest starter.

How's my FH draft looking? Any tweaks needed?

    Sa
    Coady - Doherty - Tierney
    Saka - Son - Coutinho - Barnes
    Kane - Laca - Jimi

    Raya - Ramsay - Cash - Thomas

As a Newcastle fan, I wouldn't be too bothered if the Saudi PiF pulled out of our club. I'd be happy with a mediocre midtable club under the Reuben brothers and Staveley.

Our squads are virtually identical (I have Adams, you have Wood). We have the same GW30 players.

I'm thinking of using the FT to do Broja -> Toney. Could afford Jiminez but not convinced he's the better option. More expensive, worse form.

Why do you prefer Jiminez? And do you want to keep him long term?

I finally found time to watch Match Of The Day and it would be better if I didn't. It's a crime that Raphinha ended with only 5 points. Man should've bagged 20+ points easily.

Free kick, thats a nice effort, close but no cigar. The one he got from Bamford in the first half which went in the var, its sometimes happens, its neither bad or unlucky, just what happens from time to time. The worst for me is that where he just mishit the ball, in the first half and all those counters in second half that just went begging. Most annoyingly: wont play Norwich again very soon (well a Leeds team might, but in Championship next year). So that megahaul chance were spoiled.
Southampton in 31 could be better than first expected, Saints are firmly on the Beach.

1FT, 0.6ITB, planning to WC in GW31 so OK if this is a dead-end team.
    A) Dennis+Cucu > Jimenez+Amartey
    B) Dennis+Cucu > Toney+Coady
    C) Dennis+Mane > Kane+MF5.8 (Eriksen?)
    D) something else?

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    White (TAA Cancelo Laporte Cucu)
    Raph Kulu Ramsey (Salah Mane)
    Laca Antonio (Dennis)

currently a close 2nd in my ML. Trying to figure out if/how many hits worth taking in a week when the cost is essentially only 2! Thanks

    Tierney Saiss Doherty
    Son Raph Saka Ramsey

    What would you do?
    A) Sanchez to Schmeichel
    B) Broja to Gelhardt
    C) Weghorst to Toney
    D) Salah and Weghorst to Barnes and Kane (-4) (Son and Raph to Salah and 5.4mid next week)

Since aubas left...Tierney hasn't been able to attack as much.naubabdidntbspend much time on the flank giving Teirney a lot space

Martinelli also seems to lack the ability to involve Tierney. Often uses him as a decoy and moves inside with the ball
