Premier League 2022/23 fixture release: FPL reaction

The fixtures for the 2022/23 Premier League season have been released this morning.

Manchester City begin their title defence with a tricky-looking trip to West Ham United, while Liverpool are at Fulham on the opening weekend.

The new campaign starts on Friday 5 August with Crystal Palace v Arsenal, a fixture the Eagles won 3-0 in the season just gone.

Tottenham Hotspur’s home game against Southampton is also among the most eye-catching match-ups of Gameweek 1.

Newly promoted Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth face Newcastle United and Aston Villa respectively in their 2022/23 curtain-raisers.

SEASON TICKER OVERVIEW

Our Season Ticker has been updated both on the sidebar and in our Premium Members Area, with all 20 Premier League clubs sorted by fixture difficulty in the first six Gameweeks in the graphic above.

The tickers are customisable, too. You can sort by difficulty, rotation pairings and ‘relative’ difficulty (something that factors in the strength of the team), while you can also remove clubs and Gameweeks from the outlook, add your own difficulty ratings, sort by home/away matches and filter by attack/defence.

BEST AND WORST FIXTURES: FIRST SIX GAMEWEEKS

The Complete Guide to FPL Pre-Season 2022/23

City and Liverpool’s opening six-match runs are arguably the best in the division.

The reigning champions are the only Premier League team who avoid a ‘big six’ side in the first six Gameweeks, with home fixtures against Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Forest in Gameweks 2, 4 and 5 standing out especially.

The Reds’ only encounter with one of the half-dozen ‘elite’ teams in the first seven Gameweeks is against far-from-convincing Manchester United in Gameweek 3.

Man CityWest Ham (a)Bournemouth (h)Newcastle (a)Crystal Palace (h)Nottingham Forest (h)Aston Villa (a)
LiverpoolFulham (a)Crystal Palace (h)Man Utd (a)Bournemouth (h)Newcastle (h)Everton (a)

Arsenal avoid any other ‘big six’ club in the first five Gameweeks, with a trip to Old Trafford following.

Spurs have a mixed bag, with away matches at Chelsea and West Ham punctuating easier-on-paper tests against Saints, Forest and Fulham. Manchester City then await in Gameweek 7.

Chelsea similarly meet Spurs and the Hammers but also enjoy clashes with Leeds and Southampton.

United may be ones to avoid at first, with Liverpool, Leicester and Arsenal up in the first six weeks.

GW1GW2GW3GW4GW5GW6
ChelseaEverton (a)Spurs (h)Leeds (a)Leicester (h)Southampton (a)West Ham (h)
SpursSouthampton (h)Chelsea (a)Wolves (h)Nottingham Forest (a)West Ham (a)Fulham (h)
ArsenalCrystal Palace (a)Leicester (h)Bournemouth (a)Fulham (h)Aston Villa (h)Man Utd (a)
Man UtdBrighton (h)Brentford (a)Liverpool (h)Southampton (a)Leicester (a)Arsenal (h)

It’s a bit of a baptism of fire for the newly promoted clubs, who are languishing at the wrong end of our newly updated Season Ticker.

Fulham and Bournemouth have it especially tough, each meeting three big-six sides in their opening half-dozen Gameweeks.

FIXTURES: INTERNATIONAL BREAKS, WORLD CUP INTERLUDE AND MORE

Everything you need to know about the FFS World Cup of FPL

Unlike in previous seasons, we’ll get a total of eight Gameweeks before our first international break in September.

That will be our one and only short hiatus before the Premier League pauses for over six weeks to accommodate the World Cup.

Gameweek 16 on the weekend of November 12/13 is the final one to take place before attention switches to Qatar, with FPL resuming on Boxing Day with Gameweek 17.

Back-to-back rounds then follow on December 31 and January 2 before another temporary break for the FA Cup third round.

The season ends on Sunday 28 May, with Brentford v Manchester City, Chelsea v Newcastle, Leeds v Spurs and Southampton v Liverpool among the final fixtures of 2022/23.

We’ll be taking a more in-depth look at the teams with the best and worst fixture runs as the day goes on.

  6. Home/away fixture rotation pairs
    Portsmouth Bubblejet
    • 13 Years

Each club has one team with whom they always rotate home-and-away. Some pairs are allocated due to close geographical proximity, created by the need to spread police resourcing. Other pairs exist purely for reasons of timetable expediency.

Here are the 38-game rotating pairs for the 2022-23 season:

    Arsenal – Spurs
    Aston Villa – Bournemouth
    Brighton – Leeds
    Chelsea – Fulham
    Leicester – Nottingham Forest
    Liverpool – Everton
    Man City – Man United
    Newcastle – Southampton
    West Ham – Brentford
    Wolves – Crystal Palace

This means that FPL managers can pick a cheap defender from (say) both Wolves and Crystal Palace and be sure that one of them will always have a home fixture.

Strange that Villa and Wolves aren't paired

      1. Portsmouth Bubblejet
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 10 months ago

It's the opposite, in fact. Villa and Wolves are either both home or both away for 30 of the 38 fixtures in 2022-23, as is usually the case.

This is because Villa's home games have to rotate with Birmingham City (for policing reasons) and usually also with West Bromwich Albion (for the same geographical reason). West Brom always rotate with Wolves, which puts Villa on the same home/away pattern as Wolves most of the time, regardless of which division the teams are in.

Struggling to see a £4.5m rotating pair that have good chance of clean sheets and/or attack returns.
Only possibilities I see are: Lamptey + Firpo (assuming he drops to 4.5), and, Jonny + Mitchell.

You only won 3-0 because it was coming off the back of an international break.

Arsenal was on fire until that break wrecked our season.

I think Diaz Nunez Salah start the season.

It's a new dynamic. We have no idea the positive or negative impact. Salah will be overpriced imo and the frontline unsettled. I expect goals but they could easily fall to the other 2 who are cheaper. It's a value decision. I have been confident of Salah every other season until now. He will have to justify his high price before I think of bringing him in.

Agree - the damage you could cause with Haaland, Son, TAA, Robbo plus one of VVD, Diaz or Nunez could far outscore having Salah as a 12.5-30mil player you’re not always going to captain.

Always too much uncertainty over line-ups to BB GW1, but I do like the idea of getting it out of the way early so you can maximise your squad value later in the season. Maybe straight after my first WC.

Last year it was easy because so many players were confirmed out. I had Tsimikas amongst others. Got 7 points and didn't get the full benefit as needed a deeper bench with covid but don't regret trying it. Holding onto it this year though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kane is 12.5, Haaland 12.0

If they're priced the same and they increase 0.1, you need change.

Even if they are there is a good change Kane will rise 0.2m after the Saint fixture.

      GK: 4.5, 4
      DEF: TAA 8, Cancelo 7.5, 4,5, 4
      MID: Salah 13
      FWD: Haaland 12

Add another 4.5 MID or FWD and that leaves 35M for 5 attackers. Early template?

One of them, I'm thinking maybe Salah, Haaland and Son with a cheaper D but it will depend on the pricing of the non premium mids and forwards.

        Ramsdale [could be Martinelli] 4.0
        TAA Cancelo Dias Cash 4.0
Diaz Saka Martinelli Eriksen (Spu) Guimares
        Kane/Haaland Gelhardt/Undav 4.5

        Kane (c) GW1 > Haaland (c) GW2
Ramsdale > Alisson GW4-5, downgrading Martinelli to a 6.0 if necessary.

Looks like we are on a similar wavelength.

Kane always starts slow. I wouldn't go there

          The rest looks good

Very similar. Good point re. Kane. I'm not sure Nunez will be on fire from the out. You can see I'm fixed on a 4-5-1 initially.

Are we thinking game should go live in about a weeks time?

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
          1 year, 10 months ago

Does seem to be earlier and earlier but at the same time pricing can be ruined if they release early and lots of impactful/important signings are made

Personally wouldn't mind them releasing early with tentative prices that are liable to change with a deadline of let's say 2-3 weeks before the season when prices will update and get locked in

It is tricky, but with this season being mutilated by the World Cup everything is going to be different.

Would be a problem for a lot of casuals. They'd create their team, and then it might be over 100m after adjustments. FPL can't do that.

            1. @persecuted_by_mods
                1 year, 10 months ago

Yup that would be the main reason they won't, but with clear signage and warnings maybe they could get away with it. E.g could make it so you set your team up but can only submit it on X date

Game opened 23rd of June last season, and 27th the season before Covid, so could be earlier than that given the fact that the PL kicks-off a week earlier this season, but FPL website not being down for close season maintenance yet makes me think it's going to be later this season.

Leeds have great opening fixtures, depending on player prices and positions there is a good chance I will start with treble Leeds (I am a Leeds fan).
Meslier, Kristensen, Raphinha, Rodrigo (if mid), Geldhardt and Bamford all on my short list.

          Hoping for the following prices.
          £5.0 - Meslier, Kristensen, Geldhardt
          £6.0 - Rodrigo (midfielder)
          £6.5 - Raphinha
          £7.5 - Bamford

143 saves... most in the league by some distance.
                £4.5 would make him essential

It's a shame all the promoted teams have such brutal opening fixtures. I normally love a punt on a promoted player.

          Trent, Cancelo, Cash, Mykolenko, 4.5
          Son, Saka, Coutinho, Harrison, 4.5
          Haaland, Darwin, DCL

If Leon Bailey drops to £6.0 he could be a great differential pick for the opening 4 fixtures.
One to watch over preseason for sure.
