One of the most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers of the last five seasons could be back on the watchlist in 2022/23 after a move to ambitious Newcastle United.

The Magpies have already secured the permanent addition of half-season loanee Matt Targett and now 30-year-old goalkeeper Nick Pope has joined the Magpies in a deal believed to be worth £10m.

Let’s assess the shot-stopper’s 2022/23 prospects in this Moving Target report.

THE FPL HISTORY

After narrowly escaping relegation two seasons ago, Pope’s heroics weren’t able to stop Burnley dropping this time. Despite their demise, the Clarets had the league’s tenth-best defence in terms of both clean sheets and goals conceded.

SeasonAppearancesClean SheetsGoals ConcededFPL Points
2021/2236947130
2020/21321137144
2019/20381550170
2017/18351135152

In fact, Pope has ranked in the top six for saves in each of his four Premier League campaigns, reacting from a slow start to his career to become an established goalkeeper and England international.

Beginning at Charlton Athletic, he wasn’t a regular starter until 2015/16 but did enough to impress then Burnley boss Sean Dyche. He was signed as back-up to Tom Heaton and made his top-flight debut aged 25, replacing the injured Heaton during a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

From then on, it was his shirt to lose, with the team ending 2017/18 amongst the league’s best for clean sheets (seventh) and goals conceded (sixth). Although a serious shoulder injury ruled him out of the following season, Pope bounced back to become the top-scoring FPL stopper of 2019/20.

His 15 clean sheets and 170 points led to a top-half finish and a spot in the PFA Team of the Year. Whilst the team slowly regressed from this, Pope’s star performances remained crucial to the point where he has subsequently collected eight England caps.

I think I'll be going with Pope - interested to see what his price ends up being.

Ideally £5.0m, but I think he will be £5.5m.

Martínez or Pope @ 5.0 would be worth the extra 0.5

They’re both ‘Set and forgets’, basically.

Sanchez will probably come in at £5.0m this year, so it will probably come down to whether I want to pay the extra £0.5m for Pope.

Or end up with Raya at £4.5m.

Him and Botman, going to be interesting to see the pricing of Newcastle defenders. Any of them around 5 will be heavily owned I think. Trippier?

I'd probably get Pope and Trippier if they are £5m.

Either would be an absolute gift at that price.

He's disillusioned with the lack of transfer activity and maybe ETH. It's been reported he's considering jumping ship.

I mean he could have gone to City last year if he wanted to win trophies. He wouldnt risk his legacy at this stage by going to another PL club. Maybe Bayern is an only option left in Europe

Yeh, he won't go to Barca due to his time at Real, so there's no Big Club with a vacancy, other than Bayern if Lewandowski leaves. But Bayern are never that stupid. I'm sure he thought last year that by joining the PL runners-up, he would win trophies with United.

I'll be looking out for Moder of Brighton and Colback of Forest. Romeu could be a fallback option. Basically, it's whoever is the most nailed-on to play 90 mins every game for a steady 2 points.

      1. Brimble82

Brighton are busy in the transfer market. Will be interesting to see how things play out re lineup in pre-season.
Romeu is the worst of the ‘90min starters’. So many YCs and always looks on the cusp of a red (though interestingly - he’s NEVER been sent off. Maybe I should give him more credit for self control!)

Colback or someone from a promoted team could be fun. And Forest’s early fixtures are certainly the best of the new clubs.

Good points. I remember 2 seasons ago it was Cairney. Was a waste of time then, don't expect any change. I will take a closer look at Forest and maybe Cherries 4.5 mids. It's for 3rd bench spot, so no drama, but a guaranteed 2-pointer helps if going with 2x4.5 forwards who might not get pitch time when a sub is called upon.

It’s just a shame the shame Bissouma’s tfr went through before the hame launched.

Reckon he’d have been £4.5m at BHA, but will likely be £5.0m now.

Think he’s the best quality in that position.

Winks moving would be interesting, but not interested in Everton.

      Hard to say.
      But I’m not interested.
He was poor at Bayern, heavily rotated at Inter and Conte loves to rotate his WBs, this article wrote him off as an option for me:
      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2022/06/23/how-the-new-five-substitutes-rule-may-affect-spurs-wing-backs/

Essentially, Conte subbed him pre-60 in half his starts.

Not a good option for me.

          Isn’t that an irrelevance.
He didn’t make the magical 60min cut off point.
So whether he missed that from the starting XI or the bench doesn’t matter - still means he doesn’t get CS points - which from an FPL perspective is what matters

He can play on the left too since he is left footer. He started at Left wing in his first few seasons.
He is the star man of the club and untouchable. He will definitely play unless he's injured.

Oh. I still think he is our preferred pen taker although Martinelli took the last one. Its because it was the last game of the season and were winning already. Jesus is not a known pen taker and in case with Raph, the seniority at the club still edges for Saka imo.

When Saka scored a pen against Chelsea, with Martinelli on the pitch but no Lacazette, Arteta said he was surprised not to see Martinelli take it.

We all have opinions on here, but passing them off as fact is not helpful.

Interesting thing is In Chelsea match Saka took a pen which he won for. Same as Martinelli when he took a pen which he won. Maybe we need to wait and find out another time when both players playing and not one of them win the pen.

Surely if we're talking about a hypothetical situation where Raph has arrived too, he could be in line for pens.

Either way, it really shouldn't be Gabi first choice by then as he won't be starting ahead of Saka, Jesus and Raph.

Wonder if they may play two up top again in that case. Would have thought assurances must have been made to both players. Arsenal starting to feel like a mid price minefield - tempting to stick with odegaard if 6.5 just for value for money

Jesus starts all league games if fit & Eddie gets the Europa league group games plus first off the bench in league.

Last year he was 3rd choice behind Laca & Auba so he will get more league minutes but no good for FPL

Very premature obviously, but as it stands who are must haves for your GW1 team? And who are you definitely going without?

    Musts
    Son
    Saka
    Haaland
    Perisic
    Arsenal defender (likely Gabriel)

    Going without
    Chelsea players
    Salah

For me, Salah has been off the boil for a long time and I’d want to see how Liverpool fair without Mane as an attacking force. I anticipate problems.

No one is completely must-have for me before prices but I'm keen on:
      - Håland, Son, Diaz
      - Robertson & Cancelo/Laporte
      - Trippier/Pope
      - Martinelli/Saka
      - Would like one of Chiwell/James/Mount but price-dependent & want to see how squad shapes up with new signings first
      - Darwin Nuñez but probably cant afford him at start
      - Maybe rotating 4.5m def from Wolves & Palace

If you go without any one of Salah, Haaland or Son you’re likely going for one of the others instead - they can all outscore one another potentially anyway. Ayling’s probably the only absolute must have.

Realistically I'm most likely to go with Haaland, Son, Diaz, Chilwell, Cancelo, Robbo, and Saka or Jesus. That could well change but those are the ones that haven't moved from my main thoughts so far. Don't plan on Salah and while I'm open to changing any from the list above for other options, I think Salah is the least likely premium that I'll change to. Wolves have good fixtures but I don't trust them, vastly outperformed xGc in their good period last season but it caught up with them and hasn't really been any sign of them improving the squad just yet (bearing in mind Moutinho is gone and Neves may go too).

Similar to mine, I’m in the same boat on Salah & prefer the triple up of Diaz Son & Haaland. Jesus is a lock now along with Cancelo but may go VVD if he comes in @ 6.5 over Robbo 7.5 plus a Arse defender!

Going Sterling over Diaz gives you a strong captain for GW3 and GW7. (If CHE move happens)

Getting the big hitters right will be crucial this season. Going to have to think carefully when prices are released. Lots of potential banana skins...

Salah, Haaland, Son, Sterling, Bruno, KDB, Kane, Ronaldo, Diaz, Nunez, Vardy, Jesus...

I will almost certainly pick TAA, Cancelo and Salah.

I think a rested Salah has historically done very well at the beginning of season. If I had to choose between him and Haaland I would go for Salah every time, given he's the proven Premier League asset and always plays 90.

      Lpool/Spurs/Harrison/Arsenal 4.5

Probably TAA and Robbo. They should be fantastic value.

Haven't analysed the data properly yet, but they appear to be in a league of their own:

      TAA: 6.5 ppg
      Robb: 6.4 ppg
      Cancelo: 5.6 ppg
      James: 5.4 ppg

I do wonder if Cancelo's output will increase though. Cucurella joining may be a sign Cancelo is moving to RB to deliver crosses for Haaland.

Yep, huge potential with him. The guy loves scoring those juicy 6pt goals.

Nor did Salah, Son or KDB for mids or Kane for fwds.
I actually only think ppm is a useful stat when looking at 'value picks' rather than 'all picks'.
Whereas ppg can reveal a bit more about those who wee injured/rotated.

          Obviously, both metrics required context.

        2. Piggs Boson
          • 14 Years

If you filled your team with the best value players you'd have 20.0m leftover, and not many points.

What's impressive about those two is that they are both good value and score a lot of points (~200pts), that's what makes a gold standard FPL player.

Agree with points points - just saying important to consider value per mil as well as PPG and not to look in isolation. Although I don’t necessarily agree with PPM is only an important stat for value picks, as still important for your premiums to ensure whilst they may have the highest PPG if you can get a similar score but higher PPM elsewhere then that would arguably be the better pick

              • 7 Years

Fair - interestingly, I think when taken in consideration as you suggest, it further emphasises the 'value' in Salah's £13m pricetag.
Doesn't remove the 'fear' of going 'Salah-less' though.

Yeah and son would look good when taking a balanced approach. Also with Salah if you are going to captain then that covers any ‘value’ differences. Interested to see Diaz price point though

does anyone have any idea, technical or otherwise, how you stop people from having multiple accounts in games like DraftKings (pretty sure it's encouraged there) and FPL?

Just thinking of a game idea; but people making multiple teams, as I *suspect* many near the top of this years FPL rankings did, kinda ruins the idea - people wouldn't want to give intrusive personal details, and even if they do they can use a made up person/family member, but there must be some way - any ideas?

I guess entry fees is the first hurdle to set-up, but bigger prizes just incentivise multi-team algorithm players even more... maybe entry fees but with unique bank account numbers? Can't really use IP addresses because multiple household members might want to play..

I've been reading about Sorare a bit recently and even there multi-accounts (and collusion) seem to be rife

Easiest way is probably to enforce 2FA through connecting a phone number to each account (so a text confirmation whenever you log-in each time / on a new device). Not too sure many will want to do that though

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 11 Years

yeah good shout, there was talk about 2FA for FPL last season (around the hacks) so maybe that's what is taking them so long to get the game ready...? that would kinda make sense actually

you'd have to be pretty committed to get a bunch of phone numbers to enter 50+ teams, unless there is an easy way to do that I don't know about

and if I'm correct in my suspicions (and there isn't a way around it) Top 10k is going to be much easier this season with 2FA!

Yeah I think they confirmed at one point we're definitely getting 2FA this season (think it was after one of the worst round of hacks), I imagine it should mean the player count might drop a bit with less fake emails being viable but maybe people that do that will still make the effort to make emails

        So many issues with this.

1 not everyone owns a mobile
2 no one should have to give their mobile number out to do anything
3 the 2FA surely has to be optional. No way am I messing with 2FA . I am capable of creating a secure password and 2FA could be a nightmare when you are having issues logging in pre deadline.

No way of stopping multi accounts. Just gotta get on with it and maybe take out Ruth

Also two factor authentication does not require having a single account. On many platforms you can have the same phone number for multiple accounts.

True . I don't think many will bother using it in all honesty. The amount of times I've had to re-authenticate using the same browser. It works better for people on smart phones but I wouldn't trust it on a laptop or PC. Imagine trying to make a panic move 2 mins before deadline then finding out it hasn't worked or your havent got your phone at hand and you can't remember password because you never log in with it. Spend the time learning a good long passphrase with password complexity and keep it in a password manager. Job done

Would it shock you if they had teething problems with it?

I have to agree 100% I purposely use Laptop to ensure I do not give my phone number out to anyone unless I want them to have it which is different from an iOS or Android App on your phone.

2FA and multi-factor authentication are excellent tools for safety and security, and should be used by any business applications with employees, or any individual using banking of money apps, but in terms of playing a 'game' or a site like this, I would not enforce it. I have been In IT Security for nearly 25 years and understand the why, what, how and when.

In terms of business (take Facebook, as an example) they do not mind multiple accounts, as it makes them look like they have got a bigger audience, same a Barclays FPL and 9 Million users. There are only about 5-6 million users and then players who add new teams and accounts on a weekly basis to bet against each other with same budget every week. I don't like this, but understand why. If FPL were to add a weekly game on top of the season game, this would go away immediately, however, the would look like they have far less users.

Like I said, I don't think people will like it, just saying that's realistically the best way if you're trying to cut down on fake / duplicate accounts. It can be set up to only allow one phone number to be connected to one account if they wanted. As for mobiles, let's be honest here, how many regular players of FPL aren't going to have a mobile phone in 2022?

spend the next four days building stats ad points per million data so you can pick the most effective team, as FPL won't release until July, it's a time to hang your boots up for a week, and breath deeply, and relax!!

I have liked the community articles (Promoted Teams, Spurs and Five Substitutes, GW1 Considerations). I hope we will see some articles on areas like any other new PL rule changes and referee stats as well as OOP players in pre-season.

In terms of the season going forward, I also hope that the 'Big Numbers' and 'Eye Test' articles are continued. The Eye Test was particularly interesting and I hope it can be expanded this season.

Three drafts. The Salah and Haaland. The Salah. The Haaland. Each coincide with new formations.

Next, if I can afford each one, or what are the sacrifices needed to be made.

    4-4-2
    Raya
    TAA Cancelo Cash Fofana
    Salah Kulusevski Odegaard Bruno G
    Haaland Watkins

    4.0 Jonny/Ait-Nouri, 4.5, 4.5

    3-5-2
    Raya
    TAA Cancelo Dias
    Salah Bowen Kulusevski Coutinho Odegaard
    Wilson Johnson

    4.0 Jonny, 4.0, 4.5

    3-4-3
    Sa
    TAA VVD Cancelo
    Bowen Kulusevski Coutinho Odegaard
    Haaland Wilson Johnson

    4.0 Jonny, Colback, 4.0

      But what about THE SON

      1. Athletic Nasherbo

        4 years, 22 days ago

I would captain Son once in the first 8. He’s now a premium price. For that reason, he’s not in my draft. I cannot have Salah, Haaland, and Son without too much sacrifice, a sacrifice which isn’t worth it because of captaincy.

        Son + 4.5 mid = 15.0
        Kulesevski + Odegaard = 14.5

Even if Richarlison signs, I don’t think he’d play in Kulusevski’s position anyway.

If Spurs sign Richarlison he won’t be coming to sit on the bench with the World Cup in 3 months.

Out of the 3 Kane, Son & Kulu I would say it would affect Kulu minutes more unless he is in turn deployed as at RWB?

          All speculation anyhow!

It's a potential signing that makes little sense. He plays in Son's position.

I don’t think transfers are that easy to understand. Richarlison has never played on the right for Everton. To me, he’d be a threat to all the front 3 positions as well as a needed back up in case Kane gets his customary injury.

Spurs need back up for Kane, yes. But Rich is in the Brazil squad, possible favourites to win the World Cup. He needs regular high-lever first team football.

This is why I think if Chelsea went in for him it’s more likely. But then again, Rich moving to any top team as a starter is unlikely.

Richarlison has been deployed on the right multiple times for Everton, particularly later in games, after subs have been made, and players sometimes swap wings to accommodate.

His best position is coming in off the left of course.

Hard to know where he’d fit in at Spurs though.

I think Son got so many points partly because Kane contributed nothing for half a season and Kulu wasn't there for the same period. Son will continue to do well, but maybe this time the points get shared out a bit more from GW1 on.

That's the thing though. How did Liverpool knock United off their f****** perch? By gaining a well-deserved reputation as a very well-run club, in direct contrast to United. Can't wreck all that good work for one player, no matter how good he is.

Anyway, as far as we're concerned, it makes sense for all parties that Salah stays this season and gives (us) 100%, then leave on a free and get ridiculous wages the following season, when the Big clubs can make room for him.

Ait Nouri was a bit of a pain to own last season, lots of seemingly random rotation. Semedo seems pretty nailed, but Lage hasnt had both him & Jonny fit at the same time yet. Played last 8 games & Brighton won 5, drew 2 & only lost to City.
He scored a goal & got an assist & did well.
        Good bench fodder option

Good call on Caicedo. Could be one of the strongest 4.5 options if he nails down a spot. Impressed by what I saw against Man Utd last season

Brennan Johnson makes the occasional appearance. Seems likely to be a forward now though which maybe diminishes the appeal

Only 3rd striker bench fodder option
Moore at Bournemouth 4.5 mil on livefpl but remains to be seen if this price is replicated

Colback, but he's really just a placeholder atm.

It's a shame that none of the promoted teams have a nice opening run - I usually opt for a promoted striker in GW1 but I don't think that will be happening this year unless we see a standout performer in preseason

Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal, here we go! Personal terms fully agreed with his agent Marcelo Pettinati and his two partners. Gabriel signs until 2027, it’s 100% done.

Very good option if you are considering going Haaland-less but I think he will be too expensive to pair up

            Here's a way to do it in a 4-4-2

            Raya (4m)
            TAA Cancelo Chilwell Jonny (4m)
            Salah Kulu Odegaard Neto (4.5m)
            Haaland Jesus (4.5m)

                Mine's similar:

                Raya (Begovic)
                TAA Laporte Gabriel Tomiyasu Davies
                Salah Kulusevski Eriksen Guimaraes (4.5m)
                Haaland Jesus (Gelhardt)

I expect the Arsenal defenders to be 0.5 more (each), and Jesus to be at least 0.5 more too. If I downgrade Eriksen to a 4.5 I can still put out that Starting XI.

            My 5-3-2 would be...
            £9.5: Meslier, 4.0
£35.0: TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Chilwell
            £31.0: Diaz, Martinelli, Harrison, 4.5, 4.5
            £25.5: Haaland, Jesus, Gelhardt

Treble Liverpool, double City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

              Similar to mine.
              £9.5: Sanchez, Steele
£35.5: TAA, Robbo, VVD, Cancelo, Chilwell
              £30.5: Saka, Eriksen, Kulu, 4.5, 4.5
              £25.5: Haaland, Jesus, Gelhardt

Triple Liverpool, double City and Arsenal, single Chelsea, Spurs, Brighton and whoever Eriksen signs for!

                * £8.5, £35.5, £31, £25

If I could add to 100 I'd be dangerous!

Haha i also added mine up wrong! The GKs only £8.5 so i've got a million to upgrade Martinelli or Harrison.

I like this but likely will be over budget.
Sanchez might go up to £5.0 (i'd avoid him anyway) and surely Jesus goes up to £9.0/9.5.
I'd value your midfield at £31.5 making your total around £102m.

Yeah, there's no way those prices translate to what we actually get given next month!
                  Still, it's been fun tinkering!

I feel like my defence is pretty 'luxury', so could drop 1/2 by 0.5-1.0 each and still have a playable back-5. Then use the savings to bolster where I need extra cash (like Jesus).
I'm also not bound to Sanchez, he can easily be Raya or simply 'best 4.5 GK'

I increased Jesus to 9.0. Other than that, don't think any of the prices scream wrong, but feel free to let me know if you see an issue

Defo don’t mean to sound ungrateful - I’m blooming loving it.

So I think (of players I’ve been looking at) the following are +£0.5m:
                      Sanchez
                      Davies/ERoyal
                      Cancelo
Jesus (but if you’ve changed that - bang on)
                      Gelhardt

Others I clocked, I think you’ve changed as you’ve gone.

Unfortunately for my team - if the above do come in £0.5m higher… I’ll be £2.0m short.

But once again, I absolutely LOVE your work and am really grateful to be able to go through this ‘pre-release’ draft process.
The service you give the community is phenomenal, and I, amongst many others, REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks! I also changed Gelhardt when I changed Jesus. The other ones are debatable

I did see that after posting actually. Thanks.

And yeah, all up for debate - especially as the official FPL pricing isn’t a fixed algorithm either right?
Like, we can all postulate or prophecy what we think prices will be, but ultimately, there’s a human, manual process at play by those who manage our game, so it’s still (to a certain extent) at their whim as to what they go with. Thus, very hard for us to get in the head of those decision makers.

FWIW; I think both yours and Camzy’s pricing sheets/databases are really good and helpful.

I've made adjustments to cater for Jesus, and I've had to lose Gelhardt (for now). I'll also be extremely surprised if Davies and Tomiyasu as first-choice defenders at such big clubs are actually 4.5m.

That was quick! An hour ago I had to put Kane in as placeholder for Haaland as I had too many City with Jesus. He's in an Arsenal shirt already!
