How to play GAFFR Fantasy EFL Championship 2022/23

GAFFR have announced the return of the Fantasy EFL Championship for the 2022/23 season.

Built by Fantasy Football fanatics with the help of the FPL community and Championship supporters, they’ve added some inventive new features for the upcoming campaign.

If you’re a new player, the growing community is on hand to provide podcasts, video streams, fixture tickers and data to help you get up to speed before the season starts and support you throughout the year.

Indeed, Fantasy Football Scout will be covering the game in depth over on the Fantasy Football Community website.

So, how do you play it? Here’s an introductory guide.

GAME GUIDE

The budget, team selection and transfer system will be familiar to FPL players. You can make one free transfer each week, which will be carried forward if unused, up to a maximum of two free transfers in a week.

Any additional transfers will incur a four-point deduction to your Gameweek score.

Your captain receives double points as usual but your vice-captain also gets a 1.5x multiplier applied.

If either of your captains do not play, the selected ’emergency captain’ comes in and picks up the extra points instead.

The three captains come in useful later – more of which in the ‘boosts’ section below.

BASIC SCORING

PERFORMANCE POINTS

Performance Points are equivalent to FPL’s bonus points and can have a significant impact on a player’s score. The maximum bonus is +4 for the highest-ranked player in a given match, with +3 to the next highest and so on.

These points are awarded based on a number of factors, not just goals and assists. Defensive actions, key passes, successful dribbles and other actions are all taken into consideration by the algorithm, with a full breakdown on the GAFFR site’s rules section.

BOOSTS

Boosts are the GAFFR version of the chips system but with a twist.

The season is split into three periods of 15 Gameweeks. There are six boosts to choose from in each period, of which you can pick three.

The boosts are refreshed at the end of every period and you begin again. The idea is to give managers the flexibility to choose the boost that suits their strategy and position in the standings.

There are 16 boosts in the game and any six can appear in a given refresh. Below are a few examples:

OVERHAUL

Use this wisely. You can make unlimited transfers for the Gameweek used. These are permanent changes to your team and will not revert the following Gameweek.

PARK THE BUS

Defenders score double. No captain multipliers applied for any player or position.

GOALFEST

Each goal scored adds an additional five points to the total. This includes penalties and goals scored by substitutes. Captain multipliers do not apply to the five-point bonus.

AWAY DAY

As chosen by the Twitter community. All players playing away from home score double.

MULTI CAPTAIN

Captain, vice-captain and emergency captain all score double.

JEEPERS KEEPERS

A fan favourite. Your goalkeepers score an extra +2 for every clean sheet, +3 per save & +10 for a penalty save.

Have to say I like the sound of some of those boosts/chips. Not sure I love the idea of having 3 periods of them but it would certainly add a different tactical element to the game, and having a range of chips and having to choose a few from them sounds fun, like the idea of tailoring it to your squad and style. I'd like to try this but I think one fantasy game a year is more than enough for me.

I also see from the FAQ that price changes happen only after the final day of a gameweek has been played. So if the last game is on a Sunday then changes will happen early morning on Tuesday. Much prefer this to the FPL system.

Would you like some extra chips with those chips sir?

Do like the idea of choosing from a range of chips - neat way to add variance to template play. 15 games too much surely.

Park the Bus and Goal Fest - wouldn't mind those chips added to FPL.

And, re. Pingu - year, it would be a great idea to have, say, 6 chips and we have to select 3 to use over the season, before the season starts (or for latecomers, before their first score of the season).

These chips actually sound fun. Would rather have one of them in place of bench boost. It would add some variance though

sadly doesn't seem like much fun to me. the boost part is too maverick for my liking.

Played it last season, but ended up forgetting to do transfers or use all available boosts on time.

To be honest, I find this issue with every fantasy version that’s not FPL. I end up losing interest a few months in and rarely ever bother with them after that initial period.

This year I will just limit myself to FPL and the World Cup as far as fantasy football is concerned.

    Interesting game last season: https://members-beta.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/2210401/

Pep used Cancelo as an attacking RB overlapping Mahrez, rather than coming inside like his FBs usually do. To balance this, he switched one of the attacking CMs with a DM. Mids were Rodri Fernandinho Silva. Interestingly he did this in a game where he used a traditional no 9, Jesus.

Given that he's using a no 9 next season, I wonder if Phillips might not be the backup we think he is, but someone who might often sit alongside Rodri to unleash Cancelo down the right hand side. His attacking shape might be something like this: https://pasteboard.co/LWKtP6rSD0h1.png

      Interesting, thorough research.

As a city fan I have had a feeling we are going to see a Pep masterclass with some tweaking to positions etc.

I thought if we do get Cucurella then he will be a starting LB with Cancelo at RB.

Equally Phillips and Rodri starting together could work, for £42+3 million Phillips was a big signing perhaps indicating he won't be a bench player as many think. Particularly if Bernardo leaves and we fail to replace him, I can see Pep playing Rodri as a number 6 and Phillips as a number 8 with a more forward role than Rodri. KDB would complete the typical 3 man midfield as the AM.

There does seem to be strong indication of a major rebalancing of the squad. Sam Lee has said there are no plans to replace Jesus and Sterling (Perhaps Cancelo is essentially taking that attacking role). Also talks of Gundo & Silva leaving... Haaland and Alvarez arriving.... Definitely some structural changes happening that fundementally change the way they play.

        Pre-season will be fascinating.

I am also very excited for preseason, would normally advocate the youngsters getting some game time although this year I think pep needs the time to sort out his team.

I think we are in the middle of a large scale rebuild to be honest, with in the next couple of years I think we will see gundo Bernardo sterling leaving. Phillips could take the gundo role, can't see him taking the attacking role of Bernardo tbh.

Something I think could happen but not seen mentioned is Grealish dropping into an AM role if Bernardo leaves. This is the role I think he will take when KDB finishes (I will actually cry when he does).

This could happen now if Phillips doesn't play alongside Rodri.

I think the team is as follows:

          GK: Ederson (Ortega)
          LB: Cucurella (Zinchenko, Cancelo)
          CB: Laporte (Ake)
          CB: Dias (Stones)
          RB: Cancelo (Walker)
          CM: Bernardo (Gundo, Phillips)
          CDM: Rodri (Phillips)
          CM: KDB (Grealish, Mcatee)
          LW: Foden (Grealish)
          CF: Haaland (Alvarez)
          RW: Mahrez (Palmer, Alvarez)

I haven't included sterling but I doubt he would start,

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

This was what I was thinking would happen when Phillips was signed, I think both Rodri and Phillips will play together and one will be a CM, or they'll effectively interchange the role. This would certainly go along with the idea of Foden playing at RW who would rather drop into the half space and cut in than stick out wide.

there is no chance that Phillips is ready to go straight in to that city side. His ball retention is appalling. I'd imagine it will be the classic pep tactic of getting him used to the system and phasing him in.

Funny thought, but Martial is back at Man United. Do you think he will get some minutes? If he somehow manages to break to the first team, then he could be great value potentially. Historically on 0.5xG per game, which is very good. (Apart from that Sevilla spell, where he had crap number, although he didn't play much).

I'm sure ETH will 'take a look' at Martial in pre-season, out of politeness, but it seems clear nobody wants him at United. The only real question is does anyone else want him.

Over the second half of last season top scoring defenders were

    1) Robertson 117
    2) Matip 115
    3) VVD 98
    4) Cash 89
    5) Cancelo 88
    6) Laporte 88
    7) TAA 80
    8) Anderson 76

I’m very interested to see Matip price price point this year. Also, how much cheaper would robbo have to be over TAA to lock him in instead?

    1. TanN
      • 3 Years
      1 year, 10 months ago

I would imagine he would be 6.0?

However as much as I would want him I won't from the start due to the fact Konate may well start over him.

See I do recognise this but Matip was the more important CB for Lpool over the second half of last season in terms of consistency and performances. I think he would have to be a mil cheaper then vvd for me to consider the risk

yes see my comment above, I'm unconvinced that Matip will be a regular can see his game time shared with Konate and even Gomez.

      2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

This is the biggest question for me, Matip was exceptional last season but Konate has to get more minutes so I'm not sure if either will be a reliable pick unless one picks up an injury

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          1 year, 10 months ago

I've put Matip in my current draft on the assumption that he's significantly cheaper than Robbo and VVD. If he is nailed, he'll be a bargain for sure. But yes, I'm also concerned he loses his place to Kontae - and not just him - a fit Joe Gomez ought to be in the conversation this season.

Joe Gomez isn't good enough to play centre back for Liverpool, we found that out a season or so ago, looks like he's cover for right back now.

Arguably Matip was more important than VVD last season, so will be interested to see how the minutes get managed. As Andy said if he is significantly cheaper (say 1.5) then vvd I think would be worth the risk

Richarlison will thrive with Kane. Son's output may suffer though.

Richarlison hasn't improved since he left Watford. Spends too much time sulking. A player who scores 10 goals a season but only manages 2 or 3 assists.

Doesn't have the strength to consistently win aerial battles, doesn't have the pace to get in behind regularly, rarely scores from outside the box, has shown no crossing ability and doesn't really beat a man.

He's decent in all aspects but doesn't stand out in any, in my opinion.

Really don't get why a team would spend £60m on him.

Hmm, Star Brazilian from near relegation Northern club heads to the bright lights of London...

    Raphinha vs Richarlison:
Who will be the better FPL asset this season? Who will cost more? Who will get more game time?

After a few comments about gravless posters I decided to add a gravatar with a throwaway email address. Googled "potato face" image and apparently it's a beauty treatment where people apply potato to their face and end up looking like this model.

Well Raphinha is thrice the player of Richarlison, so it's a no brainer for me.

Raphinha will make everyone around him better FPL assets. If he and Sterling go to Chelsea, I'm going to be very excited about Sterling. Price is key with Raphinha, he won't be a captain option so needs to be good value. He will be nailed wherever he goes.

Richarlison is a confusing one. Feels like a square peg in a round hole given his best position is probably Sons. Kulu transformed the Spurs attack when he arrived, bringing much needed chance creation and better balance. I don't think Richarlison is that kind of player, so replacing Kulu would be odd. I dunno, it's a wait and see for me. Feel too dumb to understand Conte's thinking.

I agree with what you say about Sterling, but he'll be around 10m and not captain material, thus not attractive in FPL terms.

Whose price do we want first?
Gotta be Haaland or Jesus right?

Jesus is still yet to be announced as a confirmed Arsenal signing (not sure why) - would be great to get his price confirmed pre-switch.

Very interesting price for Saka. Perfect 'take or leave' price - 'pick him up for a good run of fixtures but never essential' sort of a price.

I swear every year we overestimate prices. Arsenal defenders at 4.5 and Ramsdale at 5 are insane. Pope potentially coming at 4.5 based on that ramsdale price?
