Moving Target

Gabriel Jesus has been priced up as an £8.0m forward by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after his move to Arsenal from Manchester City.

He’s proving to be a popular initial selection, too, sitting in around 44% of embryonic FPL squads at the time of writing – although ‘auto-picks’ will account for some of that total.

Reunited with Mikel Arteta, who spent over three years as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, the Brazil international only twice reached four consecutive starts throughout the last two seasons.

With the Gunners recently letting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette go, Jesus has the chance to become a reliable FPL asset for the first time really in his Premier League career.

We assess the new Arsenal number nine in our Moving Target report.

GABRIEL JESUS: FPL HISTORY

Gabriel Jesus arrived in Manchester aged 19, having led the line for Palmeiras’ first national championship title since 1994. His impressive first half-season brought seven goals and four assists from just ten appearances.

SeasonTeamStarts (sub)Mins playedGoalsAssistsFPL Points
2021/22Manchester City21 (7)187188120
2020/21Manchester City22 (7)205695115
2019/20Manchester City21 (13)2018148146

2017/18Manchester City19 (10)1660137126
2016/17Manchester City8 (2)6517467

And Jesus never really let Guardiola down. His 9,273 league minutes equates to 103 full games, with 93 goal involvements arriving at a rate of one per 99.7 minutes.

Yet two big problems have plagued his five-and-a-half years at the Etihad Stadium – Pep Roulette and sporadic stints playing on the wing.

The former meant Jesus never played more than 60% of minutes in a season and therefore rarely existed on the radar of most FPL managers.

The arrivals of Erling Haaland and promising Argentine Julian Alvarez was the final nail in the coffin for his time in Manchester.

Above: Starting positions, according to Transfermarkt

Despite City not replacing the departed Sergio Aguero and Ferran Torres, last season saw Gabriel Jesus used less often as a forward. He has spoken publicly about being fine with this.

“I feel comfortable out wide. I didn’t start to play as a winger just this season. I have played with the national team there for two years. I started to play in the first team of Palmeiras as a winger and I played sometimes when I arrived here as a winger as well. So I think I’m okay there.” – Gabriel Jesus

Furthermore, following a poor 2018 World Cup where he failed to score from five Brazil starts up front, Jesus seemed to confess to coach Tite that cutting inside from the flanks is his preference.

“I spoke with the Brazil coach not that long ago and he said that after the World Cup he called over Gabriel Jesus and asked him, ‘Where do you want to play?’ Jesus said ‘I don’t mind’ but the coach said, ‘Obviously you mind, you obviously have a preference, what is your preference?’ And, somewhat sheepishly, Jesus said he’d rather play out wide. This is important. [Mikel] Arteta knows him from Man City but that’s a while ago and things change.” – South American football expert Tim Vickery

    1st draft .... 4-4-2

    Raya
    TAA - Cancelo - RJames - Doherty
    Salah - Diaz - Kulusevski - Martinelli
    Haaland - Mbeumo

    Begovic - Jonny - Pereira - Greenwood

    Thoughts?

Mbeumo? Really. Bold, good on you. I think Brent will suffer 2nd season syndrome this year.

I think Toney will be sold on deadline day or in Jan

Thx for the feedback. Nice point about sophomore slump.
Hadn't considered Toney's being sold, but even if not, w/out Eriksen in the side their creativity may suffer.

Extra 1.0 from Toney to Mbeumo allowed for upgrades of Neto to Martinelli and 4.0 def to 4.5 def.

    3 premium option - thoughts?

    Mendy

    TAA / Chilwell / Trippier / Walker

    Matinelli / Salah / Ramsey / Rashford

    Kane / Haaland

    4.0 / 4.0 / 4.5 / 5.0

A few punts and some pre season gems to find for the bench…..

Said it before and I'll say it again. Three premiums is a no go. Data backs it up very very clearly.

And I'm not talking about xG, I'm talking about Overall Points.

Unless you're going to use it for captain picks against the favourites (very risky) it ain't worth it

It might change based on pre season but im keen on salah and haaland but the extra World Cup transfer is steering me towards the initial 3 premium route with a downgrade if the wheels fall off

It's an odd one. I can actually see him getting less mins at Chelsea than he got a Man City. Not sure why exactly maybe it's more about Tuchel.
On the player himself, what a sign on £ mercenary.

As of this second, 10.1%. But I bet it will be 90% by kick-off. Then he'll score a brace and 85% of us will be crying 'cos he's on our benches.

Is the 5 sub rule making this season viable playing 5 at the back ?

Defenders less likely to be subbed and all that... TAA/Robbo/Cancelo/RJames/Chilwell/Perisic all seem incredibly appealing to me...

      I agree, it is possible.

Always find it strange how players play a certain position for all their youth playing career (literally the majority of their life when they come into the main first team) and then get shoved into another position when they come into the first team squad.

Rashford is a striker. He should be playing striker IMO, at Man Utd or elsewhere. He may be a flop up front, but until it is tried you don't know.

    Salah + Kulusevski
    or
    Son + Dias + 1m

Salah not looking great at end of last season.
    Dias is Mane replacement (surely?)
Salah & Son close stats last couple of years

Erring towards Son option ... but it's Salah (can I really go without Salah, the permachoice of the last 5 years)

That's what I'm worried about - play safe and sure, or try something different (for me).
Dais appeals as a direct Mane replacement (Salah set, Jota/Nunez fight for centre, Dias on t'other side).
Plus the spare 1m gets me Mount over Zaha

I planned the Son + Diaz from before last season ended, and then Salah signed his new contract. He has no more distractions or off-field issues now, no WC to play in in December, I expect he's going to tear it up, which is what I did the same with my plan.

Not one for posting RMTs generally but heres where I'm at at the minute since we'reall being so grumpy about them:

    Meslier
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell Trippier
    Salah Bowen Olise Odegaard
    Haaland Wilson
    (Klaesson, Tomiyasu, Pereira, Cresswell)

Favouring Bowen, Olise, Odegaard and Wilson over Kulu, Elanga, Grealish and Jesus (earlier combo). I'm quite mixed on Kulu, feel like I'll feel he'll be a transfer out in waiting. Initially on reveal I was turned off of Bowen due to his slightly higher price, but the more I think about him I think he'll be worth the extra as I see myself sticking with him longer. He's rotation and fixture proof, and I think if West Ham had anyone other than City or Liverpool in GW1 he'd be in the discussion. I remember reading Fabio Borges' comments from last season.on how he took 9 hits (his "most ever" in a season) and how he views each transfer and his moves. He sees a short term move for a player as an 8pt hit - 4 to bring them in and 4 to move them out, and I need to cut down on hits and use transfers more sensibly.

The rest, well it's nice for me to have a former Reading boy with Olise and he was having a good season until his injury; Odegaard created I think the 4th/5th most chances in the league last season, and Wilson has great fixtures to begin with. Bowen and Wilson also give me easy moves if I need to move them out for mid-range mids/fwds.

The problem seems to me to be that it's just not better than the template. Probably because you'll have too much money on the bench each week and still have players in the XI with unattractive fixtures.

GW 5, for example, you have Wilison and Trippier against Liverpool, Olise against Man City, Bowen and Cresswell against Spurs, and Pereira being Pereira. GW 6 you have Odegaard and Tomi against Man U (would be nice to bench Tomi), Bowen and Cresswell against Chelsea, and Pereira being Pereira. The rotation doesn't seem to work, and might not be worth it, even if it did.

So it does seem a little like you're going against your own ruminations about NOT booking in the transfers...

Apologies, Cresswell is Greenwood (Leeds), keep mixing those up, just fodder. The only money on my bench is Tomiyasu at 4.5, the rest are the lowest priced fodder options in their positions. I'll happily play Bowen v Spurs and the Arsenal lads v ManUtd, will still probably play Wilson v Liverpool. The others, fair points, I may have to reconsider, but similarly I think I simply need to be persistent. If I feel Trippier is a good option for a long stretch and that it's worth braving the poorer fixtures (through my bench or through playing them), then I'm fine with that as long as it's only one on an odd week. But maybe I do need to have a longer look.

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          4 years, 11 days ago

Oops, I should have noticed that. Too caught up in my fixture referencing. The money on the bench argument was, in part, based on paying 5.0 for Cresswell haha. But also if your only rotation will be with Tomiyasu (which does put more money on the bench in those weeks), then I would simply ask why you don't buy players with better fixtures.

I'm with you on Trippier, though not quite enough to convince me to forgo the premium options. Maybe I'll get him on the first WC. Since he's on set pieces, though, and only 1.0 above the minimum defender price, he could be worth keeping and playing in the tough fixtures. Wilson is 2.0 more than minimum, so I don't really see him as viable for the start of the season with those fixtures.

I usually play more like you, long term, as it gives room to experiment with more potentially optimum strategies (rotations, transfer plans, safer vs risky picks, etc), but I feel an early WC this season makes this unorthodox, fun approach less smart, unfortunately.

Cheers for the input. I don't see an issue with Tomiyasu, essentially he's there for ant week with any injuries or suspensions to cover or any weeks where I think he might be a better option than someone else, I'm also wary of the likes of Haaland getting rested here and there so I'd certainly like to have decent cover if I can. I'll take your point about Wilson and think about it, he's probably one of the only (maybe the only) ones I'm happy to look at as more short-term if needs be. But I agree, with free transfers during the WC it seems obvious to use the first WC around GW9 so perhaps a certain level of short-sightedness is a good thing on this side of the season. If I move Olise to a 5m I could move Wilson to Jesus or Odegaard to a 7m so I do have some options.

Cresswell is not the hammers player otherwise he has 6 defenders, it’s must be a 4.5 striker & he has no monies on the bench.

I would lose Olise for possibly Aaronson or Neto who have better fixtures.

Like Bowen & he is going under the radar on here

Natedog, you always contribute well so I will respond.

Olise, I love him as a player but I don't trust Viera as a coach. Unless Olise goes mental GW 1-8 he will still be a differential when you use your first wildcard, you'll have more information about rotation etc. Maybe wait?

Love the Wilson pick. Especially since you can rotate with Tomiyasu for the 2 bad early fixtures. It's a tempting option for me, but I think I will go ASM.

Like the Bowen pick. Amazing player and will be busting a gut to get in that England squad.

Cheers Tinman, valid point about Olise, and there is still the additional question (that was never really answered last season due to injuries) about how Vieira fits in Zaha, Eze and Olise together while also having Edouard, Mateta and Ayew there. Maybe my sentimentality is getting the better of me. I'll need to look at other 5/5.5 options and see how Palace lineup in preseason.

I’d be inclined to agree - though I do prefer Spurs first fixture and feel I’ll be switching Kane to Haaland in GW2, so leaves me with Spurs attack still if I keep Kulu.

I think compared to last year there are fewer stand out players in the -8m price range, its probably that those players under 8m last year are now proven so justify 8m or more so not saying they are overpriced necessarily but feel like there are more expensive players than last year. I can barely remember last month let alone last year tho so I might be wrong haha

Bruno G, Odegaard/ESR/Martinelli, Aaronson, Neto all seem decent value to name a few

There is a lot of good value, but just not at that price range in those positions. You can't have it all. FPL can't force players not to be trash or rotation risks. Just don't buy the trash players.

      Cost of living crisis eh!

Bargains if you're content with a full bench of fodder perhaps, but some genuine bargains might come out of preseason and also some low priced players who might become great value if they transfer

Prefer cash to digne, no Liverpool def will harm. No salah. Sterling I would say wait and see how he fits in the Chelsea team. Funds could be used better

Haha I know what you meant! No further word on Spence. I’m clinging on to the faint hope he comes back to Forest. Then he’d be straight in my team. If not then N. Williams is a good shout. We’re apparently interested in Toffolo (Huddersfield) and Richards (Bayern).

    Bonus point cliff drops:

    Martinez 20-21

    Laporte 18-19

    Any context as to why?

Already mentioned Martinez made 2 saves less per match.

Laporte no idea. Might just be coincidence.
