Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) or Andrew Robertson (£7.0m): who makes your Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squad in Gameweek 1?

Alexander-Arnold was the top-scoring defender in 2021/22, with 208 points placing him third in the overall player standings. However, since the turn of the year, Robertson outscored his team-mate by a whopping 37 points and is also available for half a million less.

Is Alexander-Arnold a no-brainer, then? Can Robertson compete with his fellow full-back? And is double Liverpool defence worth considering?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD v ROBERTSON: FPL RETURNS 2021/22

Salah's role one to monitor in FPL as Alexander-Arnold continues forays infield 2

Across the course of 2021/22, Alexander-Arnold finished 22 points ahead of his Scottish colleague, producing eight double-digit hauls, two goals, 12 assists, 18 clean sheets and 32 bonus points.

Meanwhile, Robertson racked up 186 points, courtesy of six double-digit hauls, three goals, 11 assists, 17 clean sheets and 23 bonus points.

Robertson mustered 6.4 points per match as he appeared in 32 Premier League fixtures, while Alexander-Arnold produced 6.5 points per match across 34 outings.

Robertson’s second double-digit haul arrived in Gameweek 22, when Alexander-Arnold already had six to his name, which drives home the fact that the Scotsman was the more viable Fantasy asset to own in the second half of 2021/22. Indeed, Robertson only blanked in three of his last 21 starts in a run that went all the way back to Gameweek 13.

However, an advantage for Alexander-Arnold appears once we start looking at the underlying statistics.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD v ROBERTSON: ASSIST POTENTIAL

In-form Robertson an appealing FPL differential for Gameweek 23 and beyond

Alexander-Arnold grabbed 12 assists in 2021/22 and retains his title as the most creative Liverpool asset, leading the way among teammates for chances created (90) and big chances created (18).

And he could arguably have had more: his expected assists (xA) tally was 13.01, one higher than the actual assist total he ended up with.

Unsurprisingly, his overall xA figure was by far the best in the Premier League last season:

While Alexander-Arnold registered an impressive 12 assists in 2021/22, Robertson came very close to his colleague, posting a total of 11.

However, Robertson trails Alexander-Arnold by a considerable margin when we look at chances created (55), big chances created (nine) and xA (5.52).

Even from Gameweek 13 onwards – the start of Robertson’s fine run of form – Alexander-Arnold created 2.55 chances per 90 minutes, compared to the left-backs 2.14, while he was also ahead for big chances created per 90 minutes (0.45 to 0.39) and xA per 90 minutes (0.37 to 0.22).

With Sterling and Jesus gone, who are in competition for the wide forward roles at City now?

    LW - Grealish / Foden
    RW - Mahrez...?

Could be a real opportunity to jump on one of those early doors if threat of pep roulette is diminished this season?

Cole Palmer deputy RW (per The Athletic). Foden may also move to the right

Interesting, will monitor pre-season. If Foden does start to play on the right as well that would make Grealish even more tempting, especially at 7m

Yeah I don't think Mahrez is suddenly going to get loads more mins - Pep always finds a way to avoid this. So either Grealish or Palmer could turn out to be good value. Not starting with either but definitely monitoring & keeping a 3rd City spot available

The signing of Phillips and the pursuit of Cucurella may hint at Cancelo essentially taking that role in the attacking phase. I explain it here: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2022/07/01/how-to-play-gaffr-fantasy-efl-championship-2022-23/?hc_page=1&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_25028569

    Thinking of going large, 433:

    Mendy (Gazzaniga)

    TAA, James, Perisic, Gabriel (Vestergaard)

    Salah, Bailey, Moutinho (Andreas, Colback)

    Jesus, Haaland, Kane

Bailey is mostly a bench option at Villa, terribly injury-prone & doesn't fit too well in Gerrard's preferred 4312 system. Moutinho.. are you really happy with someone returning about 3-4 times per season?

      1. Team17
        • 11 Years

Looks like Bailey might be used more this season. Moutinho is steady. Not concrete but looking for two under priced options that might excel - Eze? Martinelli? Fornals? - that allows for the other nine. High risk!

Having 3 premiums sucks the life out of of the midfield

If you want to keep the 3 up top & 3 premium defenders then you could go

Mendy Gabriel Bailey Moutinho to Raya Tomiyasu Neto Aaronson

These two mids at least give you a fighting chance of returning

My initial plan was to go with Robbo, but that was also factoring in an expectancy that TAA would be at least 8m and that there would possibly be 1m difference between the two. There only being .5 between them and TAA only being 7.5m makes it an easy choice. Also after watching Nunez' goals from last season, he seems to have a knack for peeling away from his marker towards the back post when the ball is on the right, and I don't like making comparisons but from his positioning and heading he looks very Cavani-like in the air, I expect he'll lead to a good few assists for TAA.

I'm wavering... was planning Robbo too but Trent's price is pretty good. Also thinking not just of crosses/headers (for which I think Robbo can compete with Trent) but also those long diagonal passes in behind that Trent likes which could benefit from Darwin's directness

Re-post (new article), I think the Leeds defence will be significantly better this season regardless of losing Kalvin Phillips (only 3 CS in the 17 games he started).
They have spent £43 million signing three quality defensive players in right back Rasmus Kristensen and defensive midfielders Marc Roca and Tyler Adams.
Captain Cooper was injured for the horrific 16 match period were 47 goals were conceded. In the 5 games Leeds actually managed a clean sheet, Cooper started all of them indicating his absence was very significant. This is further supported as Leeds only conceded 26 goals in the 20 games Cooper started (1.3 per game) vs 53 conceded in the 18 games he didn't (2.95 per game), a massive difference of 1.65 goals conceded per game.
Leeds in 2021/22 under Bielsa 63 conceded goals (2.33) and managed 3 clean sheets in 27 matches. Jesse Marsch's record was 16 goals conceded (1.45) and 2 clean sheets in 11 matches. An improvement of 0.88 goals conceded per game.
Marsch ditched the man-to-man marking system for set pieces and were clearly improved as a result. Under Bielsa in 2021/21 they concede 13 goals from set pieces. Under Marsch they only conceded from (indirect) set pieces on 2 occasions.

TL;DR = Leeds should keep more clean-sheets this season.

Hmm but if you quote the same stats for Phillips & Cooper (ave goals conceded, not CS), you get about the same gap - something like 2.4 vs 1.3. I'm a Leeds fan too & I wish I shared your optimism, but tbh I don't know enough about Roca/Kristensen/Adams yet

      1. LangerznMash
        • 9 Years

Marsch has played 4222 or 3412 throughout his career, both systems have two defensive mids protecting the backline. I'd love us to play 3412 as it would really allow Kristensen to get forward contributing to goals and the extra centreback would help out with set pieces (both defending and attacking).
Having Bamford back is like a new signing and hopefully Firpo will finally climatize to English football (not holding my breath).
I'm pretty optimistic about us this season.

Very interesting! Would you go Meslier over Raya based on this?

I like Leeds opening games & the first 2 in particular are easier on later than Raya.

I have Meslier in my draft currently so this is certainly good reading for me. I've had a look at a few articles/ videos about Marsch's preferred tactics and setup and he seems to have targeted the areas in which they're clearly lacking (or at least lacking in cover). I'll likely go back and forth on 4.5 keepers but at the same time I've felt comfortable with him for now

As for Trent/Robbo. Check Robbos stats when playing with Diaz. Makes taking him over Diaz for less funds an appealing option.

TAA v Robbo - is there anything in this hypothesis: Nunez and Diaz both bias towards the left side. Wouldn't that mean both are available for Trent's crosses whilst Robbo is crowded out a little bit?

    1. JamTart
      • 8 Years

Unsure about Nunez impact. But the other side would be that they occupy the defenders and free space for robbo to move into. Can only mark so many on that side.

Robbo hit form when Diaz had a more prominent role in the team last year.

Wouldn't the logic be that the overload on the left would allow Robbo more opportunities to deliver crosses? He loves to drill them across 'the corridor of uncertainty' for tap ins.

Foden could be in for a big year too. As per a report by Sam Lee of the Athletic, sources close to Phil Foden have suggested that he would like to operate on the right-hand side of a front three in the 2022/23 season. That should massively improve his attacking output imo.

I imagine it will vary from game to game.

Sometimes Cancelo LB, Walker RB, Mahrez RW, Foden LW ; and other games it might be Cucurella LB, Cancelo RB, Foden RW, Grealish LW.

It will probably just be another tactical option for Pep, rather than something he does every game. But over the season, will hopefully be good for Foden.

My biggest question regarding Mount would be what role he has if Gallagher stays and gets a regular spot in the team (which seems possible given reports on Tuchel's opinion of him). There are a lot of questions about how Chelsea will set up and what additions they'll manage to make

How would you spend 16.5m max on a keeper, midfielder and forward?

    A) 4.5 | 5.5 | 6.5
    B) 4.5 | 6.0 | 6.0
    C) 5.0 | 5.0 | 6.5
    D) 5.0 | 5.5 | 6.0

Already have Martinelli and all starters in XI.

Don’t see any strikers below 6.0 who seem credible, there is Undav but will he be nailed/is he good?

Gordon looks good at 5.5? Nailed and decent fixtures. Was creative asset last season

He’s my current gut instinct at that price, thing is how will they do without Richarlison?
Albeit it should mean he’s more nailed and maybe even further forward

Yeah he’s certainly one I’m keeping an eye on in pre-season. With him being Lampard’s favourite you'd imagine he will be nailed.

Still a long way to go but i'm surprised that I'm still on the same draft after 3 days.
    Any weakness here?

    Mendy
    Robbo, Cancelo, Doherty, Tomiyasu, Jonny
    Salah, Diaz, Foden
    Kane, Jesus

    4.0, Gordon, 4.5, 4.5

Obviously no Trent and Haaland, but bringing them weakens me elsewhere

      Here copy my team

      Hendo
      Trent Robbo Cancelo James Perisic
      Salah Kulu Pereira
      Haaland Jesus

      Dennis Dasilva Lavia Greenwood

Don't like it personally. It's very fixed on playing 523 formation with no usable subs. And one of starting 11 is pereira

Hey its cool. I dont like your team either 😆 I'm just using the extra 1m by doing Neto/Gordon to Pereira to make my team better elsewhere. Also, I never got the argument its fixed on playing this formation. We usually have 11 starting players and a bare bones bench. We're always fixed on our starting 11 formation until we make transfers. All my subs will also likely get 1-3 pointers every week too. Gordon's not much better a sub imo. Chances of him coming on and giving u more than 2-3 is slim.

    A. Mount/4m def in a 4-4-2
    B. James/4.5m mid in a 5-3-2

    Mendy
    TAA Cancelo Perisic Tomi
    Salah Kulusevski Neto
    Haaland Jesus

What is the status of Kulusevski after Richi joins Tot?
What will be Kontes starting XI?

So I've just worked out that my current "best 11" contains the 8 most owned outfield players, and the most owned GK in the game...
Those 9: Mendy, TAA, Cancelo, James, Perisic, Salah, Diaz, Jesus, Haaland....

Not sure what to read into that... if anything at all?
I guess the only thing it certainly means it that the mid-priced differentials, which are always important, are going to be of even greater importance this year IMO

Plenty of teams (including mine) still on auto-select

Your auto-select was far better than mine then... not sure I had a single one of those players in there

Not really! I'm currently propping up the EO of Ziyech, Pinnock, Fabinho, Lamptey, Vieira, Burn...

      Also have those 9.

They are just well priced, strong assets from the teams with the best opening fixtures/best teams.

The other 2 positions are filled with the best £6.5m midfielder + £4.5m defender… or another premium defender.

Yeah that’s why I think at the beginning of the season it’s important to just focus on the players who you think will get the most points/have the best fixtures rather than focus on ownership.

How many goals for Nketiah this season?

    A) 0-4
    B) 5-9
    C) 10-14
    D) 15-19
    E) 20+

Assuming you mean PL for FPL purposes... A, just. (would have said 4-5)
Think Jesus will eat up nearly all of his starts and he doesn't have the flexibility to play effectively on the right or left hand side alongside him.

A Jesus injury (or in need of rest after the WC) could that change immensely. On my post-world cup radar for that reason.
