Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) or Andrew Robertson (£7.0m): who makes your Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squad in Gameweek 1?

Alexander-Arnold was the top-scoring defender in 2021/22, with 208 points placing him third in the overall player standings. However, since the turn of the year, Robertson outscored his team-mate by a whopping 37 points and is also available for half a million less.

Is Alexander-Arnold a no-brainer, then? Can Robertson compete with his fellow full-back? And is double Liverpool defence worth considering?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD v ROBERTSON: FPL RETURNS 2021/22

Salah's role one to monitor in FPL as Alexander-Arnold continues forays infield 2

Across the course of 2021/22, Alexander-Arnold finished 22 points ahead of his Scottish colleague, producing eight double-digit hauls, two goals, 12 assists, 18 clean sheets and 32 bonus points.

Meanwhile, Robertson racked up 186 points, courtesy of six double-digit hauls, three goals, 11 assists, 17 clean sheets and 23 bonus points.

Robertson mustered 6.4 points per match as he appeared in 32 Premier League fixtures, while Alexander-Arnold produced 6.5 points per match across 34 outings.

Robertson’s second double-digit haul arrived in Gameweek 22, when Alexander-Arnold already had six to his name, which drives home the fact that the Scotsman was the more viable Fantasy asset to own in the second half of 2021/22. Indeed, Robertson only blanked in three of his last 21 starts in a run that went all the way back to Gameweek 13.

However, an advantage for Alexander-Arnold appears once we start looking at the underlying statistics.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD v ROBERTSON: ASSIST POTENTIAL

In-form Robertson an appealing FPL differential for Gameweek 23 and beyond

Alexander-Arnold grabbed 12 assists in 2021/22 and retains his title as the most creative Liverpool asset, leading the way among teammates for chances created (90) and big chances created (18).

And he could arguably have had more: his expected assists (xA) tally was 13.01, one higher than the actual assist total he ended up with.

Unsurprisingly, his overall xA figure was by far the best in the Premier League last season:

While Alexander-Arnold registered an impressive 12 assists in 2021/22, Robertson came very close to his colleague, posting a total of 11.

However, Robertson trails Alexander-Arnold by a considerable margin when we look at chances created (55), big chances created (nine) and xA (5.52).

Even from Gameweek 13 onwards – the start of Robertson’s fine run of form – Alexander-Arnold created 2.55 chances per 90 minutes, compared to the left-backs 2.14, while he was also ahead for big chances created per 90 minutes (0.45 to 0.39) and xA per 90 minutes (0.37 to 0.22).

    Ederson (Ward)
TAA - Cancelo - James - Justin (Tomiyasu)
Salah - Dias - Guimares - Neto (Andreas)
    Haaland - Jesus (Forss)

Will spend next 30 days contemplating:-
Perisic + Rashford vs James + Guimares

Sorry, only just seen this - no, I’ve answered more from the POV of what he as an individual is capable of. I’m not really sure what to expect in terms of starts - my instinct says he’ll be lucky to start 10 but he did impress last season and seems odd that he’d have signed a new contract without having got assurances. If my instinct is correct then he probably falls within A and B categories.

It’s not really the clean sheets we care about from LFC… it’s the assists.

Orherwise you could just get Eric Dier for pretty much same Number of clean sheets and save another £1m.

TAA maybe is hard to ‘cover’ but Matip ended up 16pts behind Robbo. If he looks like playing most of the Prem games again he is great value. There will be rotation all over that defence

With Spence leaving and Neco Williams at 4.0, he'll be an easy pick.

He likes to attack a lot too. Good money for Liverpool too after signing Calvin Ramsay.

I'm still shocked at how much we paid for Nunez considering how many bargains we get.

      ^this

Forest setup allowed Spence a free reign down the flank with Worrall shifting wide in possession, Johnson doing likewise from the front position creating a massive overload for Spence to be the free man to then allow for Davis, Yates - Header!!! - and Johnson as the inside option to give Forest teeth in the final third quickly. Spence isolated actually highlighted a substandard touch and naïve nature to his fledging game and why we had a chance to get him on loan in the first place.

Imo Grabban as a penalty area hunter thrived when he was fit - how many goals did he get from the six yard box - and if Taiwo can operate in the same area as opposed to Davis who played deeper in link up, then he could also be good value with the build up play we preferred.

It's in part why we have signed Niahkite - better on the ball than McKenna - as the left centre half to allow for Omar Richards or Toffolo - pending signings - to bomb forward on the same nature with Gibbs White offering the overload up top. Provide balance to our game. Now sign them up Cooper!!!

TLDR - Neco - better than Spence - at 4 in the garibaldi shirt will be profitable. Right signings and Taiwo is value too

little bit different from what I have seen here, so well done. Perisic to Doherty gives cash for Tomiyasu to Gabriel.

My question to you is why you want to put 30 million into your forward line when historically they score the least points (other than keepers). I would worry about what your going to do if Neto flops. Pretty difficult for you to move to anyone else. Coutinho also likely to share minutes with buendia so another risk in midfield. Last issue you have is the 8.0 midfield spot. There is a lot of talent in that pool of players you will need two transfers to get there. Also what others say you have a difficult task getting to city or Chelsea defenders if needed

I do partially agree but also think he'll be more of the main man/selfish when he's on the pitch at Arsenal, he could play 1000 more minutes too so he's surely got to increase his numbers.

        2. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          4 years, 4 days ago

          Improving though.

All the young players are improving, Jesus, himself will boost the creativity of others, Vieira is very creative, and any other additions (E.g. Tielemans) are being made with creativity in mind. Creativity comes from all places, not just one player.

Arteta wants to close the goal-scoring gap to the top teams eventually, and it'll probably reduce this coming season.

Not to mention that his goal record is much better when he's starting games, even for the same amount of minutes (if I understand correctly)

So we must play our first WC between gw2 and gw16 (obviously early as gw16 would be silly) and we also then have unlimited transfers during the world cup. Well, that's put the cat amongst the pigeons. Need to scour the fixtures during gw1-10 ish to find the inflection point and build a captaincy/squad/transfer strategy up to that point and then WC. It's a bit messy eh.

    1. The Mentaculus

Correct. Go quarter up the season. Not sure I'd call it "messy", just allows us to take it (small) block by block

      1. DelPiero10
        4 years, 4 days ago

Yeah probably a poor choice of words by me there. What I was getting at was that there doesn't seem to be an obvious fixture swing where you'd think "yeah that's it there for sure". There are actually a bunch of mini-swings imo. Opinions on that will vary of course but having built my own fixture-tracker/ideal captain picks for gw1-25, I'm not seeing an obvious turn. Gonna take a while to figure this one out.

Around GW8, Arsenal, Chelsea & Wolves' fixtures start turning for the worse, while Leicester, Newcastle, West Ham & Palace improve. Not precise but that's my rough target for now

          1. DelPiero10
            4 years, 4 days ago

Yeah, not a bad shout. The only thing I'd disagree with there is Chelsea. They have a great run from gw9-12. It's a little patchy after that but still quite strong with 4/6 fixtures being somewhat enticing from gw13 on.

Nice round number but at first glance, there appears to be an argument for anywhere from gw4-11. I suppose it'll come down to how each manager wants to build a squad. Formation, how many premiums etc.

That was my first thought. There just seems to be an opportunity to go earlier and then use a few transfers up to that point and try to get ahead of the crowd a tad. As Tinman said there's no obvious swing, it just isn't there. Trying to predict the best week to do it is more challenging than I expected.

    4. TheTinman
      • 10 Years

There isn't any obvious point to be honest.

I would advocate on the earlier half as you will have so much more info than when you made your 1st draft.

Probably around GW6 or 7 for me

      1. DelPiero10
        4 years, 4 days ago

These look like good weeks to me too, yeah. Only been looking at this for a short while though. Wolves have a couple of cheap options that can be starter or cover but after gw6 they are not great. There actually seems to be quite a few mini swings around gw6. At least workable ones where the changes should be profitable.

If you remove a GW from the member's ticker, then restore it via the recycle bin... there is no way to see it again if the GW number is lower than the lowest/left-most GW.

E.g. if you delete GW 1, then restore it, you won't be able to see it. Maybe y'all need some QA. I don't see anyone on the roster for this, and I can't find any job listings in all those tabs! 😉

No one in Arsenal's front 4 is a specialist at creating chances, they all have higher xG than xA, preferring to score rather than create. Do you think Vieira was brought in to correct this imbalance, and where would he play?

Yep, looks like Vieira will be the assist guy. Odegaard will have to up his game as well.

Odegaard has slightly higher xA than xG where I'm looking, but I don't think the 'preference' is relevant. I don't see an imbalance. If you have equal xA and xG, I don't think you are likely to score more goals. Instead, you are likely to score more goals if you have a high xG. That's the actual measure for it afterall! More xA = more xG (indirectly). I would imagine xA and xG both to improve for Arsenal this season.

I don't think you don't need a specialist. Odegaard, Saka, Martinelli and Jesus all compare pretty well to other front 4 players for xA, except if you compare them to KDB (then it's a surMOUNTable gap to Mason). And they will probably improve this aspect with time and new signings.

Veira is certainly being brought in to increase xA and xG (aka (probability of goals scored). I think he's likely to be competition/rotation with Odegaard, primarily. Odegaard is the tactician, but could be swapped for Vieira in-game, if something's not working out. Alternatively, I see him working with Odegaard from the wings, replacing Saka in-game, for example, to boost the creativity.

It remains to be seen if it will would with him alongside Odegaard, as Arsenal have had problems in the past when weakening the CM defensively. However, Tomiyasu (and perhaps Martinez) could help to alleviate this issue. If Tielemans comes in, though, Veira is going to be 2-4 choice for that spot, though, most likely.

In other, words, I see him spending plenty of time in the final third, but not necessarily a starter. A lot depends on signings though and if he can adapt to the prem quickly enough to become a viable option at #8.

Looking at what The Athletic said, it's possible he might play in Xhaka's role. He massively improved his defensive numbers as his manager wanted and it would probably explain his signing more than having him, Odegaard and Smith-Rowe all vying for a similar spot. He could possibly play alongside Odegaard in front of Partey too

    Pope
    Trippier, Cancelo, Perisic, TAA, Tomiyasu
    Dias, Guimaraes, Son
    Haaland, Jesus

    (Raya, Broja, Neto, Andreas).
Pope for two, then sold for a 4m and sticking with Raya.

I'm thinking of going big on defence for most of the season as I think there'll be more minutes rotated further up front with the 5 subs.

Any thoughts? No Salah is a concern.

Not sure it's smart to be booking in transfers in the first two weeks - especially a goalkeeper transfer. You're better of riding it out with Raya. Also there's no guarantee Pope comes straight in for Dubravka week 1, which I'm not seeing a lot of people talk about

My only concern is if Klopp wants to ease him in like he’s previously done with big signings.

Anyone with Kane & Haaland fwd line?

The best I could come up with is this, and I'm contemplating going with this draft

    Mendy
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Tomiyasu, Jonny
    Diaz, Coutinho, Saka
    Kane, Haaland

    4.0, Gordon, 4.5, 4.5

Also looking to trying fit both TAA and Robbo, triple Liv is a must especially without Salah

      Kane, Haaland

I am also on Haaland/Kane but struggling to fit everyone I want in.

      Pickford
TAA Cash Trippier Tomiyasu (N Williams)
      Sterling Salah Dewsbury-Hall Mwepu (Andreas)
      Haaland Kane (Greenwood)

Did have Jesus, but after seeing Sterling on the move I changed it around a bit. I definitely want some spurs coverage in there but Ican't really afford Kane/Son and unsure of Kulu Minutes after the Richarlison signing

Dont like to use the "e" word generally as there's many ways to play the game, but I'd expect them to top the CS count & the pricing isn't steep enough to make me think twice, so yeah I'm definitely going with a City defender

Anyone care to explain why people bigging up arsenal so much for the start. I’d jump on them from week 3 because palace away (gw1) and Leicester (gw2) IMO are difficult fixtures. Leicester had most of there top defenders out last year and palace statistically in defence were great.

      B)

Laporte + Ederson last season 9pts per game
      Cancelo + Raya 9.6

Cancelo also got most mins of any City def.

Ray has less fixtures against top 7 in first 10 than city so might be a good spread.

Saka or Jesus for the Arsenal attacking spot? Currently on Jesus but think there are so many good 8m midfielders this year so having Saka offers great flexibilty in that spot

Depends on what team formation you have/want, I don't want 1 up top so am going with Haaland Jesus at the moment and two 8m mid spots occupied by Kulu and Mount to start with.

Points per game similar so whatever suits your formation.

Jesus pro's is that he is one of the better value fwds and could do even better with consistent run of games. However supply at Arsenal likely worse than City so this could decrease his output.

Not sure whether Jesus increases or decreases Saka's output, Jesus is a very assist heavy fwd so could benefit the wide players

First draft followed by 30 days of tinkering… Thoughts?
Reluctant to double-up on Chelsea def with Mendy. I like Wilson’s opening fixtures, and he also provides some flexibility?

    Ederson (4.0)
    TAA Cancelo James Cash Justin
    Salah Diaz Martinelli (Neto, Andreas)
    Haaland Wilson (4.5)

    1. AIRMILES

My main concern is really Neto flopping - Justin could be transferred for another 4.5 def, but don’t enjoy the 5.5m midfield range very much.

Freeing up funds for Neto upgrade could be good

Perisic at 5.5 is the only 5.5 DEF I'm looking at.

      B IMO.
Especially if 4.5 mids seem to get playing time in preseason.
Depends on your bench as well, I would avoid A if you have no bench as the 4.0 defenders seem more unlikely to receive playing time compared to the 4.5 mids.
Kulu is rotation risk for example.
