Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have seven viable £8.0m midfielders to consider for 2022/23, with options limited beneath that price rung.

As a result, starting with at least one of these players is appealing, but which of them is best for our Gameweek 1 squads?

We investigate in this latest Premium Members article.

GOAL THREAT

Mins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per shot on target
Diaz10.825.435.774.2
Foden15.237.746.797.6
Kulusevski17.649.564.4143
Maddison31.934.680.375.4
Mahrez11.825.635.567.8
Mount16.531.1549.885.4
Saka13.630.941.796.8

From the seven candidates, Riyad Mahrez has generally posed the bigger goal threat, registering a shot in the box every 35.5 minutes.

However, there isn’t a great deal separating the Algerian and Luis Diaz, who actually trumps Mahrez for minutes per shot (25.4 v 25.6), albeit by a small margin.

Elsewhere, while the majority of James Maddison’s efforts arrived from range, over 75% of Diaz’s attempts have come from inside the opposition box, which is captured on the graphic below.

Above: Luis Diaz (left) and James Maddison’s (right) shot maps 2021/22

ASSIST POTENTIAL

Mins per crossMins per successful crossMins per chance createdMins per big chance created
Diaz68.919348482.5
Foden16.359.654195.1
Kulusevski17.6183.851214.5
Maddison31.9118.552226.2
Mahrez16.186.639312
Mount15.655.641239.1
Saka27.3103.444333.4

Mahrez once again leads the pack when it comes to chances created, but it was Phil Foden who carved out better quality opportunities for his teammates (195.1 v 312).

Mason Mount’s crossing stats impress, having been very prominent at set-piece situations in 2021/22: he took 90 corners for Chelsea last season, with 29 successful deliveries.

Meanwhile, Dejan Kulusevski‘s 17.6 minutes per cross is also worth noting, given that he and Diaz were the only £8.0m midfielders not to take corners for their respective sides. However, 183.8 minutes per successful cross tells us the Swede’s accuracy was often off.

Was hoping Sinisterra was going to come in at 6.0, now he’s 6.5 would you drop Perisic to a 5.0 defender to get him in?

    No Salah team, looking for a few opinions;

    Mendy
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Chilwell, Perisic
    Son, Diaz, Grealish*, Martinelli
    Haaland

    4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5

*Any 7M midfielder can be here; Zaha, Bernardo, Raphina, Barnes, JWP, Benrahma, Gallagher, but reason Grealish is there, is I'm waiting for pre-season.

No Salah is negated by captain choices Haaland/Son. Rest of the team is solid and can play any fixture basically. Entire starting XI from last season top 5. Obviously if things do go wrong, early wildcard isn't an issue as unlimited transfers again from GW16 to GW17.

I like it- similar to my Salah-less draft, though I think I’m leaning towards keeping him.
      Just not sure about
      A. Martinellli
      B. Too much bench fodder. Not fielding 11 will be a regular concern at the start of the season.

I kind of want to break the mould from the get go this year and to be honest I ALWAYS start bad, finish strong so figured this year, why not just do what I want and enjoy the game. Albeit I'll be entering multiple money leagues again this year unlike last.

        A) Will naturally monitor pre-season. As a West Ham fan I might be quite biased but if there is a clean favourite out of Benrahma/Fornals/Lanzini then he can easily become on of them (the latter two saving 0.5)
        B) See fixture concerns below. Willing to take that risk as a whole and more or less start the same XI week in week out. Hoping Andreas proves to be a key figure at FUL and hoping Greenwood gets a lot more minutes with the five substitute rules. Taylor seems to be the go to 4.5 but couldn't tell you much about him to be honest.

Pretty good honestly. I quite like it. That's not big at the back. That's ginormous at the back which unfortunately means you have an awful bench.

      1. Zenith UK

        4 years, 14 days ago

Thanks Camzy, yeah the bench is my only concern and I'm actually a player that usually always has one or two bench options but in the past few years I've got so frustrated with leaving points on the bench that I don't care. Not to mention with the amount of cameo's I think we'll see this year, I might as well risk it with the starting XI. Grealish doesn't start? Oh well I bet he gets at least 10-30minutes every game he doesn't start. Same applies to Martinelli.

We all know the points that Trent, Robbo and Cancelo can more or less guarantee (from clean sheets alone, let alone the attacking extras) and I feel they outscore the midfielders again this year. Not sure if you saw the twitter thread on Perisic but he looks dangerous if he replicates last years performance in the PL.

Understand why you might not like it though

I would reduce one defender in order to move Martinelli up to a more nailed mid. You're gonna be stressed enough if Haaland doesn't start to have any more non-playing risks.

Haaland to Kane is a straight swap, should he not start, and I'll be quick on the trigger to not get priced out.

The thing I’d say is you have an answer for every suggestion. To an extent I get that - you have put thought into the team. However, when lots of people make the same observation re: distribution of funds and you bat them off, I’m left wondering what you were expecting/hoping for.

Sorry if my comments came across as dismissive, definitely not meant to be the case, I'm just giving the reason I've made that decision if that makes sense. Believe me I've taken this feedback onboard to get to the team I'm at now because before it was looking a little different. Grealish an 8.0 and Martinelli a 5.0 for example.

I am literally just showing my thought process. I've realised that if you post your team with the reasonings afterwards you never get replies so open it to conversations and I go from there.

Hope you get what I mean

I totally get what you mean, no worries. I also tend to start badly so I understand that aspect too. I generally have a thing about fielding 11- had I done it more last year I might not have lost my main ML by 5 pts!

Here's my no Salah version also without Son to get playing subs hopefully:

      Sánchez
      Gabriel, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo
      Ødegaard, Mount, Luis Díaz, Foden
      Jesus, Haaland

      Steele, Williams, Dewsbury-Hall, Johnson

See Ødegaard as better value compared to Martinelli because I prefer him as a player and, like you, would prefer Grealish over Foden to free up 1M, but will assess pre-season.

Anything glaringly wrong with this one?

With 5 subs being effective this season, fpl should’ve increased the budget & allowed manual subs, how can we be managers but we aren’t allowed to make our own subs, instead the system does that. Sucks!
I just don’t get it tbh.

Would have brought more variance & skill set just like in other fantasy football games.

      Wake up fpl tower!

No need for higher budget, they already underpriced 50% of key assets making it dead easy to pick good team without any sacrifices.

Can’t get a strong bench with the current budget. The 5 subs rule will absolutely frustrate a lot of managers this season. Game is supposed to be fun & I expected fpl to have at least done something concerning this

He shoots from range and plays for a weaker team.

Maddison is 0.5m overpriced imo compared to the other mids on this list.

7.0 would be far too cheap - he’d be in everyone’s squads, 7.5 arguably.

There are a few prices which haven’t been used which I think should have for variety of teams/structures:

      - Far too many 8.0 mids
      - No mids 9.0-9.5, Bruno F should have been in that range imo
      - No 7.5 mids

Curious to see how there are some people who still don't go with Salah in their team. Him and TAA should be nailed in a good fpl Managers team. "He's too expensive" is not a valid argument. Not only is he consistent but he will be your captain choice most of the times and I'm the unusual scenario where he isn't its easy to downgrade him as opposed to fitting him in

it is a valid argument, especially when KDB/Son are slightly cheaper and Liverpool have at least 3 other great picks

Honestly it might not be a bad approach, Liverpool could struggle this season without Mané imo. Salah will always be Salah but Son could be a perfect cover along with Trent, Diaz & Robbo

People also factor in his form the last half of the previous season.
I did try a draft without him but I couldn't stomach it. I too have come to the conclusion that he and TAA are (the only) non-negotiables in my drafts.

Morning! Only spots I’m unsure of now are starred, what do you think?

    Sanchez* | Steele
    Trent | Cancelo | Doherty | Tomiyasu | N.Williams
    Salah | Son | Martinelli | Gordon* | Pereira
    Haaland | Mitrovic* | Greenwood

I know Mitrovic has his haters after prior burnings when he’s been in the prem, but his record of 43 goals in 44 albeit Championship appearances is hard to ignore….

Other alternatives to the * spots:

    Current:
    A) Sanchez | Gordon/Neto | Mitrovic

    B) Mendy | Gordon/Neto | Johnson/Solanke

    C) Sanchez | Bruno G/Eriksen | Johnson/Solanke

Good. I've no issue with mitrovic tbh. Reckon he's fairly priced for what he should return. Would prefer kdb to Haaland but that's just me. Possibly consider Jesus or Wilson and improve midfield. Good luck

Thank you, yes Jesus looks good - what I’ve done is decided personally for me these are essential and have them built around them (hence the sacrifices):

        - Trent & Cancelo
        - Salah
        - Haaland
        - Kane or Son

I prefer starting with Son I think rather than putting 23m into forward line with both Kane & Haaland.
Also think Son is well worth the extra 0.5 with about 60 more points last season.

Despite the sacrifices I think it’s fairly well balanced, just missing the 8.0 mid spot, but Son is there for downgrading.

      Yeah, very similar thinking here.

Diaz and Mount are in the current draft in a 5-3-2, but Foden is tempting.

I actually think Kulusevski will be fine for starts, at least initially, but I'd still put others ahead.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years

I do like Mount a lot. Be interesting to see who Chelsea sign and what system they play. I like his xMins though. Solid reliable pick.

But I like idea of having triple City for those fixtures. I'd love Foden to play on the right, he looked so good in that position for England when he was goven freedom to drift inside, dribble, shoot, and float balls to the far post. I'd love to see him and Haaland combine in that way.

Yeah and i guess we'll see how Richarlison fits in in pre-season. Open to changing my Kulu stance.

      3. Foden
      4. Mount
      5. Kulu
      6. Saka (if no quality attacker is signed)

Have no 8m midfielder in current draft (but Jesus and Robertson)
There are so many options and surely there must be 1 spot for 8m midfielder, and even makes sense to use this spot to swap with right fixtures/form. If start with Jesus and 8m and it doesnt work out not many good options around that price.
What do you think of this, downgrade Robbo or Jesus and upgrade 6m midfielder(currently Martinelli)?

I mean, you could say the same thing about ESR when he was the preferred option. ESR's performances were more complete, imo, but Martinelli's were perhaps more focussed on flair while pressing and stretching the game. ESR's no slouch, though, and quality on the ball, and apparently was struggling for fitness in the latter half of the season. Strong competition for sure.

Very early days but have just shoved in:

    Raya, Balcombe
    TAA, Cancelo, Lamptey, Tomiyasu, Ait-Nouri
    Diaz, Mount, Coutinho, JWP, Colback
    Haaland, Jiminez, Toney

    £4m in the bank.

Really split on what to do. On the one hand I would like to get Salah instead of Diaz in there but I don't know where I get that extra £1m from, alternatively I'm quite happy with Diaz being that cheap assuming he's a nailed on starter in their front 3 but then don't know where to spend the £4m?

Team was mostly picked looking at fixture difficulty with an eye to both a GW8 wildcard and a few planned transfers getting Ait-Nouri and Jiminez out after the first few weeks. I guess the cash could go to whoever I replace either of them with, or upgrading a midfielder.

Ah well, a very long way to go yet, still plenty of time for me to over think it so much I end up putting Harvey Barnes in my GW1 line up for the 4th year in a row only to completely regret it come GW4.
