Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have seven viable £8.0m midfielders to consider for 2022/23, with options limited beneath that price rung.

As a result, starting with at least one of these players is appealing, but which of them is best for our Gameweek 1 squads?

We investigate in this latest Premium Members article.

GOAL THREAT

Mins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per shot on target
Diaz10.825.435.774.2
Foden15.237.746.797.6
Kulusevski17.649.564.4143
Maddison31.934.680.375.4
Mahrez11.825.635.567.8
Mount16.531.1549.885.4
Saka13.630.941.796.8

From the seven candidates, Riyad Mahrez has generally posed the bigger goal threat, registering a shot in the box every 35.5 minutes.

However, there isn’t a great deal separating the Algerian and Luis Diaz, who actually trumps Mahrez for minutes per shot (25.4 v 25.6), albeit by a small margin.

Elsewhere, while the majority of James Maddison’s efforts arrived from range, over 75% of Diaz’s attempts have come from inside the opposition box, which is captured on the graphic below.

Above: Luis Diaz (left) and James Maddison’s (right) shot maps 2021/22

ASSIST POTENTIAL

Mins per crossMins per successful crossMins per chance createdMins per big chance created
Diaz68.919348482.5
Foden16.359.654195.1
Kulusevski17.6183.851214.5
Maddison31.9118.552226.2
Mahrez16.186.639312
Mount15.655.641239.1
Saka27.3103.444333.4

Mahrez once again leads the pack when it comes to chances created, but it was Phil Foden who carved out better quality opportunities for his teammates (195.1 v 312).

Mason Mount’s crossing stats impress, having been very prominent at set-piece situations in 2021/22: he took 90 corners for Chelsea last season, with 29 successful deliveries.

Meanwhile, Dejan Kulusevski‘s 17.6 minutes per cross is also worth noting, given that he and Diaz were the only £8.0m midfielders not to take corners for their respective sides. However, 183.8 minutes per successful cross tells us the Swede’s accuracy was often off.

Johnson probably on pens. He took most of them last season. Not sure about FKs. He may get a share but it depends who we bring into the midfield. We’re not done making signings yet!

maybe a bit risky to have him from the start. may as well spend an extra 0.5 and get one of the forrest strikers imo. he has a very good record in the belgium league though

Welbeck finished the season very strong, I'd be surprised if he was immediately dropped for someone unproven at this level.

Always liked Welbeck, underrated player, but he's had a bad time with injuries. Hopefully they're behind him.

I dont think Chelsea defenders is necessary at start tbh.

They will be rolling with a pretty new defense plus all the teams they are facing at start of the season are capable of scoring odd goals.

didn't own him until GW8 last season, even though he scored pretty much every game; still finished 3K - even if he does well it's not the end of the world, it's worth a punt with TAA/Robbo/VVD/Matip/Diaz/maybe Jota/Nunez as 'price-point' leading options

Salah had afcon this year which affected and obviously, the contract issue was a problem for a long while as he wanted that increase in pay.

A happy mind equals a happy player.

Could be good, but for me Foden, Kulu and Jota are all 'wait and see' players and a little too high risk for my liking to start with (obviously Kulu and presumably Jota too (to a lesser extent) should be nailed for GW1)

It's great when it's a high reward and doesn't leave you needing/wanting to tear your team up in GW2! There's definitely an opportunity to get in there early with some of these players but seems a little pot luck to me. I guess this is the issue until we see pre-season.

Jota could be a get out GW2 though - Nunez isn't going to warm the bench for long. Do you really want to plan transfers? You'd need hits if you want to bring in a Kane or a Haaland and it's almost certain you'll want (need) to bring one of them in.

Huge fan of Kulu but are you not concerned with minutes now they have signed Richarlison?

Not worried at all about kulu.

Nunez aint gonna be rushed. Jota will be starting striker at first then its down to form.

Good point re haaland and kane i should start with one of them

It's really sad to me that FPL has become a super league and everyone will only pick players from top 6 teams. That is the most disappointing thing about this year's prices imo. I look at the sidebar and see updates on player transfers from other teams and think it will make almost 0 difference to my FPL team this year.

I like looking for value in the mid-table and promoted teams (that's where an engaged manager can really get an edge) and this year it really seems narrowed down to maybe 1 or 2 slots in midfield and fodder. There's just no reason to do it with the premium defenders so cheap and budget forwards so overpriced.

you cant own every player from top 6 plus if and when Arsenal stop performing well, you will have to go for some mid-table options. (assuming you consider Arsenal as a top 6 team)

Is it allowing you to pick Kane, Son, Salah, Haaland, Diaz, Mount, Trent, Cancelo, Robertson, Chilwell and James in same team?

Just because someone can get a team of top 6 players doesnt necessarily mean that they have made the right choices.

Not defending the FPL pricing strategy but their are multiple options one can opt for, its just that we dont like to take risk and prefer to play safe with likes of Salah and Haaland.

Can't have four premium attackers chief. The three I'm missing are three players from last season's top 7 and could easily be altered to top 6.

It does prove that their are enough options, so better to not cry about pricing and how FPL is now a piece of cake.

              1. DelPiero10
                4 years, 14 days ago

Who's crying? Camzy didn't say there were no options. The point was it's possible to make a whole team from last season's top 6, which is a true statement. It's okay to not like that that is a possibility.

Also, it doesn't prove anything really. There's 100's of players available so of course there are options and quite a few viable strategies.

Can i have a moan... i'm sure i'll get told where to go.

but i constantly read peoples personal comments on here about peoples teams when they are not being asked for it.

someone will post their team, maybe ask about 1 or 2 players or ask for a general view and then people feel the need to comment on the players that dont suit the template team. the minute a team gets posted that is a bit different from 'template' the comments are generally advising to upgrade all the players that are a bit different to the same players that are basically in everyones team.

everyone will just end up with template team, people are allowed to have a hunch on other players or take a risk on players outside of the main group. some of the alternative teams on here look great!

dont know why i felt the need to write this, maybe i'm just having a bad day

Because the template is strong for a reason. I don't fault people for recommending template picks when others ask for suggestions.

You gotta pick your spots to differentiate and where to deviate personally.

It's been the same for years. This is why the genuinely top players don't do RMTs (unless they are Twitter twunts) - they use their own brains.

It’s probably genuinely best for anyone that needs to ask for advice to stick to the template as much as possible. When you no longer need that advice you no longer do the RMT stuff - think about how many times you’ve ever seen Magnus Carlsen, Favio Borges, Poseidon, etc do a RMT

I've always been a big fan of Ings but i just don't think Gerrard fancies him so could be a risky pick. Spent a lot of time on the bench at the back end of last season. Team looks good though and if Ings can force his way back into the first 11 then could be a great differential.

Thanks mate, main reason because of the 8m mid?

I'm currently on A as I feel Ramsdale James Perisic are the best options from their respective defences and BrunoG looks a bargain even if he doesn't keep up with last season's output. I already have one 8m mid too.

    2 vs 3 Premium attackers

    A. 2 Premiums - Cancelo, James, £8m Mid, Haaland
    2. 3 Premiums - 2 * £4.5m Def, Son, Haaland

    What’s is the better combo:
    1. Son & Haaland
    2. De Bruyne & Kane

First time on the site, was looking for a bit of feedback.

Got 2 drafts, one with salah and one without.

    Sanchez
    Cancelo, Arnold, Virgil, James, tomiyasu

    Son, coutinho, diaz

    Haaland, jesus
    Subs steel, colback, Andreas, greenwood

    Or

    Sanchez
    Botman, Arnold, cash, James, Tierney,

    Salah, Neto, Son

    Haaland, Jesus

    Same subs as previous draft

    Thanks in advance

You don't need to be /that/ sold on Neto. Consider him a best first guess for which 5.5 mid will be worth owning. After a few games and a bit more info you can move him to someone else. Very few people had Gallagher, ESR, or Martinelli in their teams at the start of last season but they were all very useful 5.5 guys. I think this year's similar options will appear once the season gets going.

Yeah I think you need to settle on only two of Salah, Son and Haaland. I'd rather Trent and Cancelo than the 3rd of those premiums.

Hello guys! Any thoughts about this draft?

    1. I have Toney and Jansson because they have good games, will start 100% and are dangerous when they have set pieces.
    2. I'm not so sure about Perisic. I'm thinking of downgrading him for a 5.0 defender and upgrading Sanchez to Ramsdale or Mendy.

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo James Perisic Jansson
    Salah Diaz Saka
    Haaland Toney

Am struggling a little with the Perisic love on here, I have to admit...

33, new to EPL (and it's a hrash transition for many younger players), and the prior history under Conte (and that's pre-5 subs) is him being rotated / pulled in
