Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have seven viable £8.0m midfielders to consider for 2022/23, with options limited beneath that price rung.

As a result, starting with at least one of these players is appealing, but which of them is best for our Gameweek 1 squads?

We investigate in this latest Premium Members article.

GOAL THREAT

Mins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per shot on target
Diaz10.825.435.774.2
Foden15.237.746.797.6
Kulusevski17.649.564.4143
Maddison31.934.680.375.4
Mahrez11.825.635.567.8
Mount16.531.1549.885.4
Saka13.630.941.796.8

From the seven candidates, Riyad Mahrez has generally posed the bigger goal threat, registering a shot in the box every 35.5 minutes.

However, there isn’t a great deal separating the Algerian and Luis Diaz, who actually trumps Mahrez for minutes per shot (25.4 v 25.6), albeit by a small margin.

Elsewhere, while the majority of James Maddison’s efforts arrived from range, over 75% of Diaz’s attempts have come from inside the opposition box, which is captured on the graphic below.

Above: Luis Diaz (left) and James Maddison’s (right) shot maps 2021/22

ASSIST POTENTIAL

Mins per crossMins per successful crossMins per chance createdMins per big chance created
Diaz68.919348482.5
Foden16.359.654195.1
Kulusevski17.6183.851214.5

Mahrez16.186.639312
Mount15.655.641239.1
Saka27.3103.444333.4

Mahrez once again leads the pack when it comes to chances created, but it was Phil Foden who carved out better quality opportunities for his teammates (195.1 v 312).

Mason Mount’s crossing stats impress, having been very prominent at set-piece situations in 2021/22: he took 90 corners for Chelsea last season, with 29 successful deliveries.

Meanwhile, Dejan Kulusevski‘s 17.6 minutes per cross is also worth noting, given that he and Diaz were the only £8.0m midfielders not to take corners for their respective sides. However, 183.8 minutes per successful cross tells us the Swede’s accuracy was often off.

Looks good enough to have me considering changing mine! Just a shame about the 4th DEF slot being Castagne (it's still not bad mind you) but without compromise in MID/FWD that don't change easily.

Could downgrade Tomi to a 4m and upgrade Castagne to Trippier, but then your bench is v. weak.

Don't ask how I got in this situation but...
    A) 541: James + Chilwell (GK = Ramsdale)
    B) 352: Martinelli + Jesus (GK = Mendy)

I favour A) if Chelsea play wingbacks, but if Chelsea play a back 4 then I'd consider B).

A, Martinelli AND Jesus feels abit too much Arsenal for me. I trust Chelsea more, they were the best of the rest last season.

I can see the logic and you might be right. I think if you sat down and crunched the numbers Kane, Saka, Tierney probably works. Kane could become Haaland if necessary (injury) plenty of options at 8m mids, Tierney more attacking.

But. Which combined trio do I think will get more points, especially in the first 6-8 games? Jesus, Son, Tomi.

Out of interest what makes you lean that way of you think the numbers might suggest the opposite.

I’d say the first set for sure. More pen takers, more certainty over Sakas role and nailednesd then Jesus and obviously Tierney vs Tomiyasu is a no brainer when fit

            1. Riska
              • 14 Years
              4 years, 14 days ago

If we were talking about the full season then the first set for sure, for all the reasons your suggesting. I do think that generally speaking Kane tends to start a season more slowly than Son does. I also think Jesus is going to score more goals than Saka. And Tierney, yeah he is more attacking -- if you can find the extra .5 for him over Tomi somehow I would, if not I'd be banking on CS points from that position rather than the odd assist or rare goal.

As someone that's never played football manager, I think FPL was the spiritual replacement to the PS2 Pro Evo era

Fifa was a bit of a bridge as it got excellent from around 09 Xbox 360 till about Fifa 12 and then I was done with video games

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 14 days ago

FIFA was mainly great because it coincided with being able to play online and if course the excellent pro clubs mode but for me for all of the money EA throw at FIFA there's something it lacks when it comes to recreating football when compared to Pes, just a shame Konami seem to be operating 3 generations behind tech wise

Yes, online only and multiplayer here for that Fifa segment, good point

I think Seabass lost a few creators/developers to Fifa when they moved from PS2 to 360 gen

You are probably right. I'm a bit concerned on missing out on Jesus though he seems about a million£ underpriced. I could switch my 541 to a 532 to fit him in by downgrading Fernandes/Sterling but I end up with £2.0m ITB (don't want to change the other players in my team).

    Sterling draft:

    Raya

Digne could be Cash but I do think he'll find his Everton form again. I love a set piece taking defender and his opening fixtures are great. He'd be dropped for a Brighton defender in GW3 or 4.

I look at the other def darlings on this site: James, Chilly, Perisic, etc, and I just don't love them for one reason or another. Also not especially convinced on mids at the 5.5 or 6 bracket.

Feels like a bad move to me. Salah will be heavily owned and heavily captained most weeks. Play your own game and all that and of course you can outscore Salah with 2 players but everyone else will have 11 players playing too.

The upside to it doesn't seem worth the risk to me. As they preach you can't win FPL in the first few weeks but you can lose it. Why take the risk?

Leeds have quietly gone about their business this summer. Tyler Adams, Marc Roca and now Sinisterra. All unproven in the Prem course as is the manager but they are shaping up. They have also brought in an attacking right back and a 10 to challenge Rodrigo.

I wonder if Leeds will be back on the FPL radar soon. Ok fixtures too

Too much money up front for me. Would prefer Robertson than Diaz and use the money elsewhere. Also think some city defence is desirable but not as the keeper. Few save points and not worth the 1m above a good 4.5. Good luck anyway

With the imminent arrival of Sterling to Chelsea, how would this play out with Chilwell´s output down the LH side?

Still not clear exactly where Sterling will play, but I'd expect more of those City 6-yard-box taps ins from wingback crosses from the byline. I think both WBs will profit.

How much of the notion that Jesus is underpriced driven by the fact that he got a price drop? If he had always been 8m would we feel the same?

I think he’s a good shout but I think the hype is partially driven by:

    A. We like shiny new things, even if it’s a new team for a player.
    B. The increase in expected minutes even if it’s for Arsenal instead of City.

Arguably he has all the hallmarks of a classic wait and see, but we have mostly jumped straight away.

I've reluctantly 'jumped in'. It's nothing to do with shiny new thing - I'm a bit more intelligent than you give me credit for.
It's to do with structure - I want a second striker and he's the cheapest from the top sides and will play big minutes. If a cheaper one proves reliable, it's easy to sell him for a Wilson, Watkins, Toney or whoever.

I've actually gone the opposite to Andy on that one. I feel like there is a greater need for an 8m midfield spot rather than an 8m forward spot.

For me you can get a better 6m striker than you can 6m midfield player. However if Jesus starts well it's going be difficult to catch that train if your money is in midfield. Its a nice dilemma

That's interesting. I don't see any forwards under 7m (i.e. Toney) that I'd feel happy starting regularly. There's not much at that price in midfield either, but Martinelli fits the bill for me. He ought to outscore any 6m forward.

For the avoidance of doubt the shiny thing want meant as a dig and I very much include myself. Just we will all be influenced by emotional biases such as the desire for new ideas / players - so not a comment on intelligence!

No worries. FWIW, I for years have mostly kept to the rule of never having a 'shiny new thing' in my GW1 squad. That way I didn't fall into the Werner trap and suchlike. But this time I'm making 2 exceptions -- Haaland and Peresic. Jesus isn't new to the PL, so I don't include him in my rule.

But like I said, I'm by no means enthusiastic about him and he's mostly there because of his price, fixtures and the ability to change him with 1FT.

I think the same can be said about Harrland but 65% have jumped on him & Jesus is a proven premership player?

Absolutely the same can be said for Haaland. But I think many of us consider him to have the potential to be a future Ballon D’or candidate - so he is considered an exception.

I’d say Jesus is proven as a rotation option for arguably (Liverpool fan) the best attacking team in the league. Quite different to being asked to lead the line in 30+ league games for a team fighting for top 4.

I reckon 8m is about right tbh. If Wilson for example were to stay fit there wouldn't be too much between them I think. The issue is the options up front aren't great value wise and we're obliged to play at least one striker so he's one of the better ones I suppose and we can search for value elsewhere as usual...

Neco Williams to Forest and now possibly Tanganga to Bournemouth. One of those is going to be a Livermento and one is going to be a Brendan Williams. Which one is your money on to be the go to 4m defender?

      Not a bad analogy actually. Points-wise, I'd say Neco = Tino (80) & Tanganga = Williams (36)

It's actually tricky to call. Neco will play more like Livramento but in an arguably worse team. Tanga will play for a manager that bores to death but is tighter at the back. I'm staring with neither anyway

Naco could be amazing value. Definitely will be starting with him. A sure starter and a fine player that's going to develop, in an increasingly solid defence with signings they have made. Probably will be playing as a wing back as well in the roll the Spence played in last season.

I personally think he's a great pick and will easily get 15+ goals this season in a fairly strong arsenal side for 8 million.

Just a choice to either go him or saka

And that seems a common thought but what’s that based on? Been a very long time since he’s had any consistent minutes as a central striker - never truly trusted by Pep in that role.

Very true but he still got 16 returns G/A in only 1900 minutes. Surely worth the risk.
I guess it's just if you would rather him or saka if an arsenal attacking player is what your looking for

    Alisson/Caballero
    James/Vertergaard/TAA/Cancelo/Perisic
    Saka/Gruno G./Ward-Prowse/Bowen/Neto
    Jesus/Mitrovic/Haaland

I understand the risk of no Salah/KDB/Son/Kane etc but every year I have a slice of that pie and every year it's the same crash & burn.

March on down the same path as usual?

Try something new like this example?

I would only trust KDB Salah son or kane for captaincy. Pool slots too valuable to use on a keeper imo. Saints hot and cold. Mostly the latter in defence. Too early to know which spurs defender to have but will definitely have one I reckon but not gw1
