Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have seven viable £8.0m midfielders to consider for 2022/23, with options limited beneath that price rung.

As a result, starting with at least one of these players is appealing, but which of them is best for our Gameweek 1 squads?

We investigate in this latest Premium Members article.

GOAL THREAT

Mins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per shot on target
Diaz10.825.435.774.2
Foden15.237.746.797.6
Kulusevski17.649.564.4143
Maddison31.934.680.375.4
Mahrez11.825.635.567.8
Mount16.531.1549.885.4
Saka13.630.941.796.8

From the seven candidates, Riyad Mahrez has generally posed the bigger goal threat, registering a shot in the box every 35.5 minutes.

However, there isn’t a great deal separating the Algerian and Luis Diaz, who actually trumps Mahrez for minutes per shot (25.4 v 25.6), albeit by a small margin.

Elsewhere, while the majority of James Maddison’s efforts arrived from range, over 75% of Diaz’s attempts have come from inside the opposition box, which is captured on the graphic below.

Above: Luis Diaz (left) and James Maddison’s (right) shot maps 2021/22

ASSIST POTENTIAL

Mins per crossMins per successful crossMins per chance createdMins per big chance created
Diaz68.919348482.5
Foden16.359.654195.1
Kulusevski17.6183.851214.5
Maddison31.9118.552226.2
Mahrez16.186.639312
Mount15.655.641239.1
Saka27.3103.444333.4

Mahrez once again leads the pack when it comes to chances created, but it was Phil Foden who carved out better quality opportunities for his teammates (195.1 v 312).

Mason Mount’s crossing stats impress, having been very prominent at set-piece situations in 2021/22: he took 90 corners for Chelsea last season, with 29 successful deliveries.

Meanwhile, Dejan Kulusevski‘s 17.6 minutes per cross is also worth noting, given that he and Diaz were the only £8.0m midfielders not to take corners for their respective sides. However, 183.8 minutes per successful cross tells us the Swede’s accuracy was often off.

Anyone remember how Chilwell and James did in Lampard's 4231?

    I remember them doing well...

Chilly was the one to have if I remember correctly

Yeah, you know what you get with Chilwell. He gets forwards. Tuchel said it's not in his game to play a more defensive role.

But I can see James' versatility being a problem at times. He may be asked to play a deeper or narrow role whenever the system needs it...

Chilly tops the James for me by a whisker. Both most awesome though and as Tuchel said and I quote “By eck those two aren’t arf good aren’t de”. By that he meant he sees them as more attacking players than defensive which bodes well does it not. Chilwell though has suffered big time in the ozzy and only time will tell if he comes back the same as he once was.

He said he's open to it. But don't think anything is confirmed.

But I think Chilwell and James would still be great options in a back 4. Just trying to remember the Lampard era to have as a benchmark.

Both are excellent options so can't really go wrong but one thing about them is that James continues to get better. He may go up yet another level this season.

Thanks mate!!! Yeah must admit having both of them I might look to change, that 5.5 Brighton striker I could get by downgrading one of them, give some more flexibility

I don't mind the Vardy punt in theory, but he's 1.5 more expensive than Jesus. If you downgraded him to Jesus you could (for example) upgrade Walker to James and Doherty to Perisic which is hard to resist for me

I think 4-4-2 is the best way to start the season. Most value in defence, most points in midfield, one up top just doesn't work.

Ramsdale - (should be the top scoring GK up to 5m, cover's Arsenal def and Leno may be leaving so could have a 4m backup)
TAA Cancelo James/Chilwell - close to essential
    Salah - close to essential
Haaland - close to essential Jesus - good for structure

Last season has shown us how good Spurs attack is so I'm going with Kulusevski as my 8m mid to start with. I'm hoping Doherty nails down his spot as I think he's better value than Perisic at 5m.

Last two midfield spots are up for grabs but hoping one of BrunoG or Neto become this season's Bowen.

Two great subs emerging in Neco and Andreas too which helps with 442.

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo James Perisic
    Salah Kulusevski BrunoG Neto
    Haaland Jesus
    Turner Andreas Neco Greenwood

Looks solid based on what we know at the moment. I'd be surprised if 1 up front is the final template too, but a lot can happen in a month.

Jesus being underpriced at £8.0m is the only reason 1 up front won't be template.

3 from TAA, Robbo, Diaz + Salah = essential
      3 from City essential
All the £8.0m players are good.

Good team. As you say, most points will be in midfield again this season. Don't reckon Haaland is essential at all. He should do very well at city but reckon at best he might get about 215 points. Robbo could get 200 for 4.5m less. Think you'll want that money back the field in time. Best of luck

The City triple up - who are folk looking to for their third City spot? Assuming Halland and Cancelo take the first 2 spots (for most teams anyway) I am assuming the third spot goes to anyone of the following:

    Dias
    Laporte
    Edersen
    Foden
    Mahrez
    Jack

(not included KDB in that list purely because most will have Salah)

Issue being points for those guys will likely be shared. Not to mention Gundo & Bernardo taking even more off the latter three (assuming they stay of course.)

You'd probably want to go the most nailed but I think a couple of the 5m defenders might get pretty close to Laporte & Dias. Similar situation with Ederson and a 4.5m.

        • 14 Years

Agree re the latter 3. Diaz or Laporte are tempting as a double up with Cancelo, but it would need to be at the expense of James/Chilwell or Perisic

yep, just made my team, its tough this year, so many options i want but not enough money, i like the changes moving the likes of Son, Salah etc back to midfield, it means more variety, also the increase in transfers to 50 with just 1 overhaul is good too 🙂

Why do people think Jesus is underpriced at 8? He is by no means a prolific goalscorer and that was in a City team that dominated every game, if anything his pressing up front will benefit the wide forwards like Saka and Martinelli/ESR much more in terms of an fpl impact

On a serious note going no Salah is usually to spread funds around but if you've got Son then that's just 1m less than Salah for a worse option not on penalties with less of a history and track record of scoring big as Salah. Points wise they ended up close last year but if you look at minutes played Salah did a lot less

Totally agree but who do I loose to accommodate son for salah. Means no spurs cover with there fixtures as well.

Alisson to 4.5 maybe? Salah worth more as a captain than the difference between a good 4.5 and alisson

      Looks nice.
You know the risks of no Salah but an early WC can solve that or 2 FT's.
Dont know if id have Alisson though, blocks that 3rd Liv spot.

I never usually have a 5.5 keeper but he scored similar points to Virgil and is 1 million cheaper

Just my opinion but I don't think you are gaining much going without. You would need Son to match him... be could? But history dictates it's unlikely.

    Hi all,

Thoughts on this draft? Struggling for inspiration despite all the activity on here lately!

Would love a way to get Robbo in without compromising Mendy, TAA, Cancelo, Diaz, Son, Jesus or Haaland if anyone can see a good option?

    Mendy
    Chilwell | TAA | Cancelo | Perisic
Diaz | Bruno Guimaraes | Son | Neto
    Jesus | Haaland

    4m GK | Tomiyasu | Andreas P. | Greenwood

A bit of a differential draft. Thoughts?

    Henderson
    Trent, Romero, Tierney, Justin
    Salah, Maddison, Martinelli
    Kane, Vardy, Jesus
    (Caballero, Aït-Nouri, Lavia, Andreas)

I wouldn't look to start the season with so many differentials, but that's my opinion. Maybe 1-2 maximum.

I'm pretty sure that Nketiah didnt sign new long term contract and given 14 shirt just to sit on the bench. He might even start with Jesus up top in most games against weaker opponents. Tbf he ended the season pretty well.

People are still underestimating Eddie and don't give him the credit he deserves. They also love to forget he's still only 23 years old and has a whole career ahead of him. He'll learn and improve.

The Premier League club of the footballer arrested on Monday on suspicion of rope was made aware of a rope allegation against the player last autumn, the Guardian understands.

The player, who is not being named for legal reasons, continued to play in the first team last season.

    *pertinent term not allowed?

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 14 days ago

It's a weird one, it's a strong allegation of course but if an allegation is all it takes for your work to just completely stop you doing your work then that's also a slippery slope

I don't blame the club in this scenario, assuming it was just one allegation rather than a few in which case they'd be right to stop the player appearing for the club

I think Raya is a great option, Brentford were absolutely fine before a host of injuries, they then got some of those players returning from injuries and of course signed Eriksen to finish strong

With Eriksen gone I see Toney being less of an option but I expect their solidity in defense to be there still, if they get significant injuries again then it's an easy ship out

Raya looks to have a good long run of fixtures. I'd be tempted to go 5.5, Allison or Ederson.

I just can't see it. Bernardo will be rotated too. He's neither explosive, neither consistent. I think that at least Haaland and Cancelo will outscore him for sure. And Foden, Mahrez, Laporte, Dias could easily do the same.

      Rodri - 2884
      BSilva - 2856

I think a lot of people are. If he plays front 3 in regularly he’ll be an option at 6.5 regardless of how bad United are

    2. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 14 days ago

Don't let people here put you off, he had 1 (admittedly incredibly) bad season, the season before that he was on fire and even when he tailed off at the end because of injury he still got consistent attacking returns

I think he will turn it around and make a mockery of his price

Feel the same way you do. He has been consistent his whole career up until last season. Could be a momentary blip, could be a Dele Alli. Hopefully preseason gives us a hint.

As a Utd fan i would love to see Rashford get his mojo back, and i think ETH is the one who can get him motivated again. On my watchlist for sure, at that price he could be the bargain of the season

I'm not a United fan but I think the whole team should be monitored. They have players who have been productive in the past. It's reasonable to think that some of them could get back to their previous form. It would be nice to see Rashford get back to around 20 goal involvements. You have to think he's still capable.

    After reading this article…

Is Mahrez a viable option given the departure of Jesus n possibly Sterling?

    Yay or Nay?

    1. J Kennedy
      • 6 Years
      4 years, 13 days ago

In 4 years at the club Mahrez has played the following minutes
      18-19 - 1331
      19-20 - 1934
      20-21 - 1945
      21-22 - 1485

You may see a bit of a bump up to as much as 2000 but Pep has had plenty of chances to play him more over the years and hasn't really.

      1. J Kennedy
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 13 days ago

Whereas someone like Foden has gone.....
        17-18 - 45
        18-19 - 328
        19-20 - 888
        20-21 - 1607
        21-22 - 2125

You can see the minutes building steadily. It wouldn't surprise me to see him in the 2500-2700 area this year.
