Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) has been handed a significant price rise in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of 2022/23 and is now the joint second-most-expensive FPL defender.

The price hike was inevitable after his fine 2021/22 in which he banked 12 attacking returns, 19 clean sheets and 201 points.

However, while the Portuguese now costs £7.0m, team-mates Ruben Dias (£6.0m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) are available for a million less.

There’ll be many Fantasy managers, then, who will seriously consider the cheaper centre-halves as Man City defensive coverage from Gameweek 1 onwards.

With that in mind, we will run a comparison of the three City defenders in this Premium Members article.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: FPL RETURNS 2021/22

Cancelo2015.6361111927
Dias1414.929 (2)251412
Laporte1604.83342188

Cancelo finished second among FPL defenders for points after cracking the 200-point mark in 2021/22.

His total of 11 assists was identical to Andrew Robertson’s (£7.0m) and only one short of what Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) managed, while the Reds’ right-back was the only defender to better Cancelo’s total of 27 bonus points.

Reliability of starts was another plus point in a side otherwise riddled by rotation: he made Pep Guardiola’s line-up in 36 of the 37 matchday squads he was available for.

Laporte was pretty much as ‘nailed’ as Cancelo, suffering only two benchings in the whole of 2021/22 – and the first of those was because he had spent time in self-isolation and missed training.

The Spaniard chipped in with four goals and two assists to supplement his 18 clean sheets.

Dias, meanwhile, had his involvement curtailed towards the end of the season after an unfortunate hamstring injury.

However, he still managed two goals, an eye-catching five assists and 14 clean sheets, averaging 4.9 points per match.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: GOAL THREAT

PlayerMins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per big chanceMins per shot on target
Cancelo29.939.8104.1806.8140.3
Dias70.9133.8160.6602.3803
Laporte64.480.988.5404.6404.6

Cancelo attempted a remarkable 81 shots last season, more than any other Man City player including Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), but only scored once.

One of those efforts hit the woodwork, but his expected goals (xG) map (see below) pinpoints exactly why he struggled to find the net more often, with only 38% of his goal attempts arriving inside the opponent’s penalty box.

In fact, despite taking 81 efforts, the Portuguese averaged just 0.06 xG per shot, so his odds of scoring any individual attempt is six per cent.

Despite taking 46 fewer shots overall, Laporte actually racked up one more attempt in the box (32, see below) than Cancelo, whilst also registering three additional big chances.

It’s also worth noting that the majority of the Spaniard’s goal threat stemmed from set-pieces. In fact, among all FPL defenders, only Liverpool duo Joel Matip (£6.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) registered more attempts from dead-ball situations than Laporte in 2021/22, something which should be factored in given De Bruyne’s ability from corners and free-kicks.

Dias, meanwhile, was behind in all of the above metrics, but getting on the end of a set-piece can sometimes be a bit of a lottery and in 2020/21, he actually trumped Laporte for goal threat.

Anyone able to take a guesstimate at how many extra captaincy points would be gained by rotating Salah with a like standard of player, compared to the captaincy points that would be gained by Salah alone?
Was gonna to check how Salah/Kane captaincy would behave faired compared to Salah on his own last season, but I don't have the tools or ability.

Every time I switched captaincy away from Salah last year he had a blinder. It was uncanny, like he had some sort of alarm telling him to play well at the weekend because you're not captain.... It's so frustrating it just becomes easier to stick with him

To try it out, look at last seasons fixtures. Pretend you had Salah and Kane every week and say “who’s the best captain”.

Then note their scores down under the following scenarios:

      Your predicted captain picks
      vs
      what the best option was
      vs
      Salah perma cap

Work out when you made the wrong pick, were you “unlucky” or did you make a bad choice?

Trying something different. Not often that you get a 4.0 attacking defender starter and a 4.5 starting attacking mid, so seeing what I can do with that!

    Raya (Caballero)
    TAA Cancelo Tomiyasu Williams (Patterson)
    Salah Son Rashford Pereira (DaSilva)
    Haaland Jesus (Archer)

A lot more doable if I go with Kane over Son and Neto over Rashford but I’m leaning with Son/Rashford for now! Definitely different from the five defender template but could be worth a go!

I think this team is forcing. A player merely starting does not them a good option, you are effectively going with a 9 man team just to get 3 premiums. And at the point you bite the bullet you’ve got no option other than to tear the team up.

    Are we overlooking Anthony Gordon?

I had written a huge thread on this, but my big thumbs ultimately meant I wasted my time, but I’m surprised more people aren’t looking at Anthony Gordon as their cheap midfield asset. I get the Neto hype with the fixtures, previous performance in the 2020/21 season, as well as the lessening of competition as Fabio Silva is loaned out, and Trincao returns to Barcelona. Wide options in an injury-stricken Podence, and a Barcelona-returning Traore certainly help the OOP Neto in a 3-5-2 formation employed by Lage in the final game of the season which resulted in Neto’s only goal of the season. But I cannot escape Wolves impotency in front of goal, and Neto’s dangerous injury record.

Here are a few reasons for choosing Gordon as the 5.5-6.0m option in your FPL teams for GW 1…

    1. Lampard favours an attacking style of play. To win games, he will know Everton will have to score more than the opposition.

    2. Gordon has just come off an excellent season in his first proper season, accumulating 100 points in just under 2300 minutes. He scored 4G 3A and earned 6CS. Comparatively, in Neto’s best season he returned 5G 8A and 9CS in nearly 2600 minutes, resulting in 124 points. Gordon is not fair off this well-favoured asset. After all, Gordon was part of the worst Everton performing team since Ronald Kouman’s sacking.

    3. Gordon has his fair share of set pieces: 50 corners, 17 indirect free-kicks, and 5 direct free-kicks.

    4. Fixtures: Chelsea (H), Villa (a), Forest (H), Brentford (a), Leeds (a), Liverpool (H) aren’t bad at all. Chelsea have found Everton to be a bogey team and will have a new defence, and the following four all have leaky defences, or is expect them to struggle defensively this season.

    5. DCL, Gray and Gordon is a PL-proven attack.

    6. He has just been given the Number 10, replacing Richarlison. Gordon has proven to be both a fan-and-manager favourite. You can get the quotes from Lampard ;).

    7. Far superior injury record

    8. Wolves are a better team, and the fixtures of Wolves probably shade Everton’s, but realistically not much is in it. I’d expect Everton to score more than Wolves, once again.

So, whilst Neto’s ownership sits at 22.4% at the time of writing, I am flabbergasted Anthony Gordon has only been selected by 3.6% of FPL managers. Come on Folks it isn’t all about the GW 1 fixture on paper!

Currently, I’ve invested the extra 0.5m in BrunoG, but with Newcastle having short term fixtures, Gordon is my go-to-replacement, if needed. In fact, this thread has enticed me profoundly. Get ready for Gordon in my next posted opening draft on site, lol.

I could go more deeply into the stats, but this post is long enough and I’m no FPL “expert”, nor content creator and writer.

    Thanks all for reading!

I don't think you can say his fixtures are good with Chelsea and Liverpool in the first 5, everything else you've said is facts though. I'd definitely have him over Neto but I'm going to spend the 0.5 extra for Martinelli

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
          3 years, 4 months ago

Just going by minutes played and attacking returns, comparison of their best seasons each means Gordon would need 6 attacking returns in 3 games to match Neto

I take the other points on board though but you can frame these things however you want obviously all personal choice in the end

Are these 6 needed returns including bonus?

The point was Everton are worse than Wolves, in Neto’s best season and Everton have just come off of really poor season and Gordon still managed good returns.

The differential in ownership is surprising for these reasons, hence.

                3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah I don't denigrate Gordon and understand the point about the ownership discrepancy, just pointing out the stats favoured Neto

Lampard got good results against the big teams, in some instances. Chelsea struggle against Everton, and will have a new defence as I state. Better fixture than on paper suggests, I think. Martinelli a sound option.

I agree that Gordon is one of the best picks in his price range and is flying under the radar. He's definitely the one to monitor and if he does well in the pre-season, I might just put him in my team straightaway. Whenever I watched him play last season, he was really good and made things happen.

man West Ham doing this thing where they're linked to exciting attacking players that just won't go there.

Was Darwin Nunez & Raphinha in January.
Danjuma, and now Scamacca is the next one.

We're going to end up overpaying for Broja and he's going to be ok, not great.

          • 4 Years

Would be tempted by Broja if he goes to West Ham, do you think he'd be a starter though or cover for Antonio??

            3 years, 4 months ago

A combination of cover and Antonio shifting out wide with Broja through the middle.

Antonio can play the wings super well - with him, Bowen & **new attacker*** we have a lot of flexibility.
Fornals, Benrahma & Lanzini could all play behind them.

            1. Fletch69

I'm assuming Rice and Soucek start though, so that leaves 4 from a possible 6 of Antonio, Bowen, Fornals, Benrahma, Lanzini + "new attacker".

Who's your money on as the first pick 4??

                At the moment I assume it would be;

                Antonio
                Fornals, Lanzini, Bowen

If we add a new attacker I see them replacing Lanzini/Fornals - but I expect that to take a little time (unless it's a $40m+ kind of player).

Last season we saw that preseason made a difference and that Benrahma earned a spot, could happen again this season but I get the feeling it won't.

For me I really like the idea of Lanzini paired with Rice too. And am interested to see how the new CB pairing goes and whether we need Soucek in there.
Soucek regressed a bit last season for me.

I remember we discussed this on a different post recently and it seems to be the case, I also recall a random offer for Duvan Zapata in January too. Moyes said a few days ago that West Ham also made a bid for Phillips and that it was more than City, I highly doubt that too

Phillips wanted to stay at Leeds. West Ham couldn't tempt him to move as their wages and chances of ECL are no better than where he was.

I suspect we did bid for Phillips in January - but he was set on Man City for a long time and Leeds didn't want to sell given they were concerned about relegation.

WHU seem to make bids first and then do personal terms second - so we tend to get a lot of "made an offer of $40m+" that really means little since the player doesn't want to move.

I remember the Zapata one too.

From what I've heard, the owners wanted Danjuma but David Moyes rejected it because he has concerns about his attitude/temperament. The impression I get from the West Ham owners is that they like to put offers in for players they know they won't get, just to try and look ambitious and keep the fans on side, even though they know they'll never actually have to fork out

            Raya | {Fodder}
            Robbo | Cancelo | Perisic | {Tomi } | { N Williams}
            Diaz | Madders | Grealish | Bailey | {Pereira}
            Jesus | Kane | Haaland

Madders is a place holder for an £8m MID (am a Leicester lad!), and Grealish could easily be Rashford, freeing up £0.5m for Perisic to James/Chillwell or Raya to Mendy...

So many options if you're brave enough to go NoMo!

        Something a bit different

        Meslier

        Taa - Chilwell - Doherty - Gabriel

        Salah - Diaz - Rashford

think you answered your own question.
if they're 3 at the back though maybe he's a good one.

think we have to wait and see what they do with their back line.

Chelsea will most likely sign two centre backs and suddenly Chalobah becomes a back up. Ake could be a bargain buy though.

they could still play 3 at the back - and of course the balance between europe/pl will lead to mising & matching.

i think Chalobah in a draft league might be a good idea - maybe not FPL.

If they sign Ake and Koulibaly their CB options will be those two plus Chalobah, Silva and Sarr. Could be a bit of rotation

I think if they sign a third defender they'll maintain 3 at the back with Chalobah mostly on the bench,. If they don't sign a third and go 4 at the back, Chalobah will join Tilva on the bench.
But for you, the pertinent observation is that if you want a 5m Chelsea defender, Ake is the same price as Chalobah.

Ake would be on the other side of the back 3. If they don't buy another DEF other than Ake he could be a reliable points earner.

Mendy - Chelsea defense is completely re-built, no idea if they'll be good
Perisic - New club, old person, and rotation risk - no thanks.
          Foden - Rotation, rotation, rotation
          Martinelli - see above
Neto - Wolves will probably score max 2 goals in their first 5 games
Jesus - People are going to be upset when he starts on the wing instead of Martinelli and Nketiah gets all the goals.

I guess it depends on your definition of ‘good’

Quickly made a “threemium” draft. It’s the safest bet, for sure. Son > KdB GW2. Monitor Jonny/Ait-Nouri, and move Wilson on for Toney/Mitrovic GW3. Just potential transfers in mind.

        Alisson
        TAA Doherty Tomiyasu Jonny
        Salah Son BrunoG Gordon
        Haaland Jesus

        Begovic Andreas Neco Archer

NOTE: An even safer draft would do Doherty > Perisic and Jonny > 4.0. Play Neco all the time, could be annoying on the bench for many.

        Sanchez
        Trent Cancelo Trippier Tomiyasu
        Salah Diaz Kulusevski Martinelli
        Haaland Jesus

Missing Chelsea defence and no big fan of Martinelli (rotation risk), but other than that...

          Could do Cancelo> 5.0 and Martinelli> 8.0
