Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) has been handed a significant price rise in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of 2022/23 and is now the joint second-most-expensive FPL defender.

The price hike was inevitable after his fine 2021/22 in which he banked 12 attacking returns, 19 clean sheets and 201 points.

However, while the Portuguese now costs £7.0m, team-mates Ruben Dias (£6.0m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) are available for a million less.

There’ll be many Fantasy managers, then, who will seriously consider the cheaper centre-halves as Man City defensive coverage from Gameweek 1 onwards.

With that in mind, we will run a comparison of the three City defenders in this Premium Members article.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: FPL RETURNS 2021/22

PlayerPointsPoints per matchAppearancesGoalsAssistsClean sheetsBonus points
Cancelo2015.6361111927
Dias1414.929 (2)251412
Laporte1604.83342188

Cancelo finished second among FPL defenders for points after cracking the 200-point mark in 2021/22.

His total of 11 assists was identical to Andrew Robertson’s (£7.0m) and only one short of what Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) managed, while the Reds’ right-back was the only defender to better Cancelo’s total of 27 bonus points.

Reliability of starts was another plus point in a side otherwise riddled by rotation: he made Pep Guardiola’s line-up in 36 of the 37 matchday squads he was available for.

Laporte was pretty much as ‘nailed’ as Cancelo, suffering only two benchings in the whole of 2021/22 – and the first of those was because he had spent time in self-isolation and missed training.

The Spaniard chipped in with four goals and two assists to supplement his 18 clean sheets.

Dias, meanwhile, had his involvement curtailed towards the end of the season after an unfortunate hamstring injury.

However, he still managed two goals, an eye-catching five assists and 14 clean sheets, averaging 4.9 points per match.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: GOAL THREAT

PlayerMins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per big chanceMins per shot on target
Cancelo29.939.8104.1806.8140.3
Dias70.9133.8160.6602.3803
Laporte64.480.988.5404.6404.6

Cancelo attempted a remarkable 81 shots last season, more than any other Man City player including Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), but only scored once.

One of those efforts hit the woodwork, but his expected goals (xG) map (see below) pinpoints exactly why he struggled to find the net more often, with only 38% of his goal attempts arriving inside the opponent’s penalty box.

In fact, despite taking 81 efforts, the Portuguese averaged just 0.06 xG per shot, so his odds of scoring any individual attempt is six per cent.

Despite taking 46 fewer shots overall, Laporte actually racked up one more attempt in the box (32, see below) than Cancelo, whilst also registering three additional big chances.

It’s also worth noting that the majority of the Spaniard’s goal threat stemmed from set-pieces. In fact, among all FPL defenders, only Liverpool duo Joel Matip (£6.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) registered more attempts from dead-ball situations than Laporte in 2021/22, something which should be factored in given De Bruyne’s ability from corners and free-kicks.

Dias, meanwhile, was behind in all of the above metrics, but getting on the end of a set-piece can sometimes be a bit of a lottery and in 2020/21, he actually trumped Laporte for goal threat.

Thoughts? Really no idea who to go with out of Chilly/James, also not sure how to best to invest the 24.5 I have tied up in Coutinho, Bruno G, Neto and Martinelli…

Probably James over Chilwell due to uncertainty over full fitness from ACL injury.

You need a 3rd Liverpool player in there. Downgrade a mid to get Diaz or Robbo in

Mostly like it, but I can’t see why Rashford based on how he looked last season. He just looks a broken player. What’s your justification for him?

Personally I’d take him out for another premium defender for a cheaper price and play 442.

Diaz vs Robbo for the 3rd Liverpool slot is one I don’t know which way to go on. Had Diaz in from the start because I think his price is great (best of the 8m options for me) but actually prefer my team now with Robbo.

I definitely want a Spurs wingback. Just not sure if Perisic will be worth the extra over Doherty. Doh was killing it before his injury and getting praise from Conte so I expect if fully fit he should start. That’s who I’m leaning towards now.

Any particular reason? I like Cash but after GW3 their fixtures turn very sour from a defensive perspective and by the time they turn again I’m planning to be wildcarding.

Whereas Trips has awesome fixtures as long as I find cover for the City and Liverpool games

I don't mind those first four fixtures at all. Newc fixtures much worse in first month. Why find cover when you can just play Cash for a month?

Newcastle have nice clean sheet potential against Forest Brighton and Wolves and in N. Williams I have a ready made replacement for GW3. So only headache is GW5 where I might be forced to play Andreas

Whereas I don’t want to be playing Cash against West Ham or Arsenal and N Williams doesn’t cover those fixtures.

Cash is almost a certain transfer after the West Ham game (if not before it)

Agreed with other reply - if you are going for the threemium I don’t think you can be spending 5.5m on a goalkeeper - downgrade and at least get up to a mitrovic or Johnson

I don't get the appeal of Tomiyasu

    - seems to be injury prone
    - very little attacking threat
    - potential rotation threat with Bellerin if he stays
    - better alternative options in 4.5m price point e.g. Dunk, Jonny, Burn
    - I do see the early fixtures on paper and potential CS

Agreed. I’m sticking with Ramsdale who served me well last season. So many good 5m defenders as well that I’d rather spend that little extra for a defender, unless of course they’re just for you bench.

All to do with fixtures. I'm sceptical about Dunk, as they didn't keep as many clean sheets when Bissouma wasn't playing last season, not sure about Burn being nailed, although Jonny is a more exciting pick. Leicester could have some good 4.5 options too, but it's a bit of a lottery as to who will be nailed.

Between Jonny and Tomi for me, at 4.5.

    Draft 3:

    Raya
    TAA-Cancelo-Mings-Perišić

Tomi to Neco then Mings to Cash for a fine 4-3-3.

I'm gonna take a shot with no Salah for two weeks
    ederson forster
    TAA Matip Cancelo Laporte Botman
    Luis Mount Saka Coutinho Periera
    Jesus Kane Greenwood

That’s a lot of 8m players, plus Coutinho around 7. While it looks pretty good on paper it makes it hard to get a second premium without a big restructure.

Going without Salah is a viable option, but I’d want at least one of Haaland or Son who I think could outscore Salah.

Matip could play europe with konate in PL. Maybe do ederson + matip to Allison + dias/laporte?

The problem you have there is that if you want to get Salah, selling two 8m mids still won't be enough to get him, you'll have to downgrade a third asset as well or get rid of Kane instead.

I think folks need to give the United attackers a clean slate under ETH this season assuming Ronaldo leaves. There could be very good value in the likes of Rashford, Sancho and Bruno if ETH get them going.

True, but for me it’s still a wait and see. I don’t think you need to go with any of them from the start.

Haaland vs Son as my second premium is my biggest decision I think. Son much better opening week and proven FPL legend, but Haaland being Haaland and City’s longer term fixtures are so hard to ignore. Who can convince me either way with their reasoning?

Diaz or Robbo as third Liverpool player is the other big call. I like Diaz price so much, but again Robbo has the pedigree for years.

who would you pair in midfield with Haaland and upfront with Son ? that would be the decider for me

It’s a bit tricky really. If I go with Haaland I’m thinking him with Diaz in midfield, but if I go with Son I’ll probably have Robbo as my third Liverpool player and Wilson up front (depending on whether he’s fit and the toon don’t sign another striker). Like both options for the other players, but no City attack if I don’t go with Haaland. What you think?

i think there is not much in it, if Diaz scores against Fulham expect his price to rocket, so i slightly favour D+H

Thanks. Yeh that makes sense and is what I’ve had initially. I just really want son as well!

you can always try and find a way to have Son & Haaland, although if you have Salah too that's pretty much impossible to have a balanced squad

Looked at that, but I’m pretty set on having Salah and don’t like what I get with a 3 premium team. Loving the value in a big defence.

imo, u cant take 3 premiums at the beginning, u just given 100M, premiums player need to watch 1st,,
just take 1 or 2 premiums for captain option at the beginning, which can rotate well.
save FT, and some money to upgrade the team later,,that's how this game work.

    A) Walker, Perisic and Luis Diaz or B) Cancelo, Cash and Rashford (already have Fernandes)

Personally out of those it’s an easy A for me. Simply because there’s no way I’d want 2 United players. Especially Rashford, until I see some resemblance of form coming back.

I don't like either personally. Walker isn't nailed nor is Perisic, Cancelo and Cash are good options but go with someone other than Rashford if going that way

that looks really good, 2 premium standard team with the difference being your premiums are your forwards, time will tell if that midfield is genius or insanity, but to me it looks pretty exciting with a good defense too

Yeah, the mid is slightly weak but considering the back 4 are all very attacking I was hoping it would balance out. I like it a lot but, I may be too afraid to actually do it.

Is there a reason I’m not seeing Nketiah being mentioned, are his minutes doubtful or something? He’s banging them in for fun in pre-season, and with Jesus on the pitch.

when Saka comes back, people expect Jesus to play up front with Nketiah benched, its a fair assessment but i think Eddie will play more than people think, he will probably be like ESR from last year, scoring lots of goals but nobody buying him because he's not fully nailed

In all my drafts so far 3 things stayed the same:

    1) Big 5 at the back
    2) Trent, Salah & Diaz my 3 LIV picks
    3) Saka over Jesus (541 with Haaland)

Now only need to find the ideal combinations and how short term should I think given very likely early WC. Thoughts on this team?

    Raya (4.0)
    TAA Cancelo Perisic James Chilwell
    Salah Diaz Saka Neto (4.5)
    Haaland (4.5 4.5)

starting 11 looks great, only 1 sub with injury and rotation risks could see you quickly making changes to that formation tho

Two 4.5 fwds is very risky especially if you have Haaland, he absolutely will get rested / rotated some weeks and you'll have no cover
