With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their initial thoughts on the pricing and rule changes.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is three-time top 200 finisher and two-time champion of India, Lateriser, who will be writing for us every Gameweek throughout the season.

How the unlimited World Cup transfers have changed Lateriser's strategy

And we’re back!

It feels like only yesterday that we closed the curtains on what was a marathon season, given the number of curveballs and Double Gameweeks we had.

On a personal note, I was delighted with how things panned out as I finished in 1,047th place overall. Gameweek 38 was very kind to me as both purchases – James Maddison (now £8.0m) and Callum Wilson (now £7.5m) – brought in double-digit hauls that led to 100 points and a 16k Gameweek rank.

Looking back over last season, I pretty much stuck to a pre-decided strategy. Having had a horrendous 2020/21 campaign, I realised that the times when I go against the crowd usually occur in the second half of the season, with regular Gameweek ranks under 50k.

This meant that I curbed my instincts during the first ten Gameweeks and stuck to a template, keeping with the crowd until at least ten weeks of subconscious data and eye tests get stored in my head, ready to go against the curve.

An opportunity to play aggressively

Auto Draft 29

Before the game’s recent launch, it’s what I thought I would do again. Once I had a look at the fixtures, I realised that the best two teams have a great start to the season. It would be quite logical to go along with the template and play the ‘long game’ with these value picks – as already discussed online, the premium full-backs offer immense value.

Then the game launched and this little paragraph really caught my attention:

‘Unlimited free transfers can also be made between Sat 12 Nov 19:00 and Mon 26 Dec 19:00 when the Premier League season has been adjusted to accommodate the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.’

This is quite a big macro factor. Essentially, we don’t have to think beyond Gameweek 16 at all and have two bites at making a team until then.

Then there is an extra Wildcard that everyone has to use in the gap before Gameweek 17. Given this added rule, there are a few trickle-down effects.

In a normal season, when deploying our Wildcard anywhere between Gameweeks 2-10, we’re building a very long-term team. One that will stick for at least 20 rounds until we usually use the second later on, around the Double Gameweek season.

This time, no matter what, you don’t need to look past Gameweek 16. The only things to carry forward, post-World Cup, are your team value and remaining chips.

For me, this means I can start the season more aggressively, target some fixtures and go ‘haul-chasing’. If things don’t work out, I’d then have no qualms deploying the Wildcard very early on. Additionally, as each team can now make five substitutions in a Premier League match, you can even look to ignore the bench early season and build unbalanced, lopsided teams that focus on targeting particular occasions.

Tread with caution with Chelsea

Whilst it would now take a lot to lead Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers away from ‘big at the back’ with explosive premium defenders, it’s worth noting that the game has also given us some cheap defensive assets who offer immense value.

It is way too early to be discussing a set-and-forget draft because we have so much to learn in pre-season: Manchester City will be playing with a proper number nine, Liverpool have a new-look front three, Chelsea are seemingly losing their entire defence and Manchester United have a new manager at the helm.

All things considered, I still see myself starting with five players from Man City and Liverpool but there are a couple of things that have caught my attention in terms of ‘opportunity’ and ‘tread with caution’.

For example, be careful with Chelsea’s defence. They have lost their best centre-back to Real Madrid and are seemingly going to lose a couple more from their backline. Due to this, there are murmurs of Thomas Tuchel potentially reverting to a four-man defence.

All things considered, their full-backs still offer tremendous value at £6.0m but the early fixtures don’t exactly scream ‘clean sheet’ to me. I am also questioning Chelsea’s elite defence status, given the huge reshuffling of personnel and system.

Thomas Tuchel is a manager not historically known for supreme defences and applied a ‘horses for courses’ approach when he first arrived at the club. Now he may look to evolve their tactics. I’ve nothing against Chelsea here, it is just something I’m monitoring closely.

Target the strong Spurs start

So I think I may have nailed it. Any feedback would be fantastic

    Raya
    Trent/Laporte/chilly/white
    Salah/Diaz/mahrez/Neto
    Kane/Jesus

    Subs: 4.0/dunk/andreas/greenwood

    Thanks everyone

Solid. Go for the lowest possible ownership for your 4.5m striker to avoid price drops.

‘Unlimited free transfers can also be made between Sat 12 Nov 19:00 and Mon 26 Dec 19:00 when the Premier League season has been adjusted to accommodate the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.’

'Then there is an extra Wildcard that everyone has to use in the gap before Gameweek 17. Given this added rule, there are a few trickle-down effects.'

This is confusing? There isn't an extra Wildcard as well as the unlimited transfers, they are effectively the same thing.

There are still only two Wildcards, it just means you need to play the first one earlier.

3 wildcards including the World Cup window

I had to reread that bit too, but I think it needs context with the earlier sentence.

"Essentially, we don’t have to think beyond Gameweek 16 at all and have two bites at making a team until then.

Then there is an extra Wildcard that everyone has to use in the gap before Gameweek 17."

So you get '2 chances' to create a team, one at the game launch and one at gw16, you then get an 'extra chance' which is the normal first wildcard

        This is the confusing bit

‘Then there is an extra Wildcard that everyone has to use in the gap before Gameweek 17’

The simple explanation is that there is one WIldcard that needs to be played before the World Cup break, unlimited transfers during the break, then a second Wildcard that can’t be played until after the World Cup break.

Technically, the World Cup bonus is 'unlimited transfers'. It's not called a wildcard. In practice, it really is - EXCEPT you would, should you so desire, be able to use a chip too - a triple captain or a bench boost on GW17.

I can't see multi-millions of free transfers being tracked to calculate daily price changes - it seems more like pre-season where all the unlimited free transfers count for nothing price-wise. I expect FPL have the common sense to freeze prices over the World Cup - why they haven't stated this explicitly is probably consistent with not explaining their methodology for price changes.

I agree it is confusingly written. It prompted me to check the rules. Perhaps the word 'Then' should be replaced by the word 'Effectively' so that it flows on from the earlier paragraphs, as using the word 'Then' implies it is in addition to the earlier information.

Great article from lateriser and echoes a lot of thoughts that I've had myself.

Salah and Haaland are the 'shields' and Kane (ahead of Chelsea WBs) is the 'sword'.

And the extra wildcard means that we can settle into the more stable strategy of a stronger defence and two premiums later on without much difficulty

I agree, this article has convinced me to start with Kane. WC after Spurs fixtures change on gw6. I already have Haaland and Salah.

Not a big fan of Trossard and much better 4.5M options than Jansson (without double-up). Prefer Tomi to Gabriel although do quite like Gabriel.

Would steer clear of Matip - we don't know who will get the nod between him and Konate. Would expect Matip to play most PL and Konate Cup but we don't know - and 6.0M is too much for a DEF for that risk IMO. I'd much prefer Alisson for 0.5M cheaper who we could probably expect to be close to Matip and VVD points (dare I say, potentially even Diaz if he has reduced minutes).

Gabriel score 5 goals and play most minutes. He is the 2nd best value defender point / price.

Jansson dont have high PPG but his fixtures is good and play many minutes too but I can consider change him.

Dont know who is better for 6.5 and below. Dont like Neto and Guimares have City and Liv first 5 games.

Matip play 2700 minutes last season and he play even until last game. The one who get dropped when Konate 3 /4 last game is VVD. Matip score 5 and assist another 5 with 5.5 point per game. Thats huge for 6.0 Liverpool defenders when others is more pricey.

Allison is best vakue GK but Raya if he can stay 4.0 ppm he can get the same value : 33 when he is just 4.5 million. Can save Liv spot too.

I dont like Diaz. I think he'll get some rotation with Jota maybe.

        Anyway thanks.

It's different and I don't think I like it...Matip, JMurphy and even Trossard rotation risks. Zero Spurs in there which is a big gamble considering they play Southampton who love a thrashing.

    Warming to this:

    Alisson
    TAA, Laporte, Chilwell, Perisic, Tomiyasu
    Salah, Martinelli, Neto
    Kane, Haaland

    (Lis, Andreas, 4.5M, Greenwood)

Maybe Perisic & Neto -> Doherty & BrunoG if the former looks nailed!

😀 cheers. The DEF actually seems a little lighter than most! The midfield is a little skinny but I think I'm good to steer clear of the 8.0 MIDs until we see how they fare although I'd be more interested in a Mahrez/Foden than Diaz.

I'm trying not to go 3mium, but I keep coming back to it. You inevitably end up with that exact front 5, and even the back 5 is mostly unchangable. I share the same concerns about Chelsea as Lateriser notes and put Cancelo in over Chilwell. I think Cancelo's extra points will be more than Alisson over a 4.5 keeper.

Cheers. I think the Cancelo & 4.5GK versus Alisson & Laporte is going to be a close call. Alisson & Laporte got 330 points between them and Laporte finished very strongly. Cancelo had 200 and the 4.5 GKs between 95 and 126. Will see who Chelsea recruit, Chilwell/James still seem decent value to me.

I was thinking about this aspect only this morning.
I'm planning on quite the opposite to an aggressive stance, and instead, having quite a dullard XI, then... if I can get there, use my First WC as a FH in GW16, knowing that I can re'align after the WC.
There are great fixtures for LIV, TOT, MCI with a spattering of differential options in EVE, CPL, MUN.

Reality is, I'll probably have used my WC way beforehand, but it's an interesting alternative option for it's use.

It's the window I'm looking at alright yeah. Just that gw8 with Spurs, Leicester, Chelsea, and Liverpool facing off it's hard to navigate. The best I can do is one Chelsea player vs Liverpool (two Chelsea benched), and triple Leicester vs Spurs so 4 players over those two awkward fixtures. Still not great but potentially better than a lot of managers will have so there's some upside to it I suppose.

Part of this article is why I'm considering going with three premiums. The free transfers during the WC means that an early WC (GW9 during the IB probably being a good spot) means going all out on early fixtures may be worth a go.

                Meslier (Klaesson)
                TAA Cancelo Chilwell Trippier (Tomiyasu)
                Salah Odegaard 5.5* Dasilva (Pereira)
                Haaland Kane (Greenwood)

It's limited, not much room to manoeuvre I know, but looking at the way Spurs ended the season and how fit Conte looks to be getting the squad, I feel like I should take the risk. Deulofail mentioned to me last week the significance of maximising the first XI with an early WC likely, didn't think too much on it but this now feels more like it and the early WC can fix things if it proves untenable. Wasn't keen initially on the idea of starting a 4.5 mid, but I saw some Brentford fans saying they have good expectations for Dasilva this season after he missed most of last season, and that he may play in Eriksen's position. His goal in their first preseason game certainly makes it feel viable. They have the fixtures that make me feel like it's worth taking a chance on. Unsure on 5.5 mid, had Olise initially, considering the likes of Aaronson too possibly, also keeping a close eye on a few 5m players that I think may become options over preseason (Bailey, Elanga, Willock, Rice).

I'm not convinced by the Neto train personally, not to say I'd rule him out but I'm quite wary of Wolves and especially their attacking assets. I'll see how things look after we get a look at each team in the next week or two

That's precisely the beauty of Neto, the kid gets points whether Wolves are playing well or barely creating anything (as they usually are)

Just don't be too late on the train!

1g 1a in 466 mins last season, 11Gi in 30 starts in 20/21, it's not bad but not great. Olise had 7 goal involvements in less than half the minutes last season (and only 12 starts) for example

Injury hit season last year tbf, 20/21 28 games worth of minutes 13 attacking returns, almost 1 in 2. Olise is a great player too and I'm not saying Neto is suddenly gonna match Salah but put it this way, the highest scoring player last season that is 5.5 this season from midfield is Fornals, Neto in his best season had more attacking returns in less minutes

Very nice. I currently have Diaz in my midfield but dropping him to an Odegaard / Rashford helps to level up the defence

Cheers. I'm a tad unsure on Odegaard but he was top tier for chances created last season so I'm hoping with Jesus there he may pick up more returns

Looks good, obviously not sure about Meslier or Dasilva, but that's the risk - Tomiyasu is good enough for the starting 11 for me. Not a million miles off mine (above). Would you not consider, for example, Cancelo & Meslier -> Laporte & Alisson? 176 for Alisson last season, 160 for Laporte (201 for Cancelo but 106 for Meslier).

I'll be very happy to start Tomiyasu most weeks but for GW1 he'll be benched, Arsenal's capitulation at Palace at the end of the season and them being outfought by Brentford on the first day are still in my head, they'll at the very least give them a tough game. Being able to bench him that week and still feel happy with my team is a big plus, I'm sure someone like Haaland will get a rest here or there so feeling like I'll have a bench option that I'll be happy to see come in and hope they can get more than 2pts.

I see the merit in Alisson and Laporte over Cancelo and a 4.5 gk, but I had a good look at Cancelo's stats from last season and I think he's going to have a big season. He has more a direct target to aim crosses at (I'm thinking in particular of crosses like his one for Jesus v Liverpool or his 2 assists against ManUtd, he gets into those spaces so often) and it's bizarre he only scored once last season given how many shots he takes and his better scoring record for Portugal.

I keep coming back to a 3mium. Interestingly, every decent 3mium squad looks near-identical. Mine only differs from yours in having Brentford's keepers, Perisic and Martinelli (and yes, that 5.5 is Neto). Oh, and the dead 4.5 striker.
It's not even for the short-term - my squad can take me up to the World Cup without a hit (if nothing goes wrong of course!)

It's definitely rigid so not much room to manoeuvre or differentiate, but still it doesn't mean it won't work. Worst comes to worst and an 8m mid or so kicks off at the start, save FT in GW2 and drop a premium in GW3 for it. I'm finding less reasons to not go for it right now but that's the beauty of bias!

I think he’d be on for 12-15 goals a season with us initially, rotating with Antonio in parts. Could be a great option but you’d have to hit his purple patch

                            RMT:

                            Raya (Balcombe)

                            Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Chilwell, James

Salah(C), Kulu, Neto (JWP, 4.5 fodder)

                            Jesus, Wilson (4.5 fodder)

                            - IMO, attacking defenders is where the best value is at, so VERY big at the back.
                            - Happy to captain Salah for the first 6 GWs, so I think that only one premium is necessary.
                            - Plan is to bench one of Neto, Wilson or JWP each GW based on fixtures, meaning one decent sub in case of unexpected benching, COVID, etc.
                            - 0.5 ITB to potentially move Kulu to Bowen after GW1.

Any thoughts? Too many eggs in one basket?

As a fan, it's embarrassing to be in this position, but it's needed and I'm glad it's a strong side. Ten Hag was trying to teach them triangles the last few days and it's uphill – the team just isn't there. I don't expect an instant impact and well may well lose this, but strongest 11 shows he's serious about progressing them and learning on the pitch. Rather than giving the kids a run for no gain.

Not at all. I think that can work. And with two playing subs, you're covered.
I'm not super hot on BG as I think he hit the purple patch of his career last season and I don't think he'll replicate, but I could be wrong, and Howe could just get the best out of him.

Also - don't we all 'need Jesus'?

It's the template 3mium. And you go 3, you really can't vary from this.

Son and Salah are proven assets - if Haaland delivers big it’s an easy switch with any of those 2.
                            Expect Haaland to play

Except it's not an easy switch. He's a forward and the other two are mids. If all 3 start firing you have a problem.

Would you get Bowen over the 8.0m midfielders if you had the extra 0.5m?

Not with West Ham starting out against Man C.
But certainly from GW2 if I manage to keep 0,5mill in reserve.

With an eye on a switch to whoever starts from Foden/Mahrez. Kulu in GW1 > City mid is a solid plan imo.

Pretty happy with this lot. Debating whether to chuck a premium defender out for Neco but really can't see where to upgrade the bottom feeder subs to use as first team.

                            Mendy
                            Chilwell, TAA, Trippier, Perisic, Tomi
                            Salah, Neto, Sterling
                            Jesus, Haaland

                            Subs
                            4
                            4.0, Andreas, Colback, Greenwood

Sparse bench but early wild card option there if there is a plethora of injuries.

Not many with Sterling in, I'd assume he will play most games and potentially up front for Chelsea now Kaku has skulked off
