With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2022/23, we’ll be welcoming back our stellar team of Pro Pundits and Hall of Famers for the new campaign.

We’ll be hearing from a different writer every day in the aftermath of the FPL relaunch, to get their initial thoughts on the pricing and rule changes.

Our writers will be providing regular articles and team reveals throughout the new season, with only Premium Members able to access every single one.

Next up is three-time top 200 finisher and two-time champion of India, Lateriser, who will be writing for us every Gameweek throughout the season.

How the unlimited World Cup transfers have changed Lateriser's strategy

And we’re back!

It feels like only yesterday that we closed the curtains on what was a marathon season, given the number of curveballs and Double Gameweeks we had.

On a personal note, I was delighted with how things panned out as I finished in 1,047th place overall. Gameweek 38 was very kind to me as both purchases – James Maddison (now £8.0m) and Callum Wilson (now £7.5m) – brought in double-digit hauls that led to 100 points and a 16k Gameweek rank.

Looking back over last season, I pretty much stuck to a pre-decided strategy. Having had a horrendous 2020/21 campaign, I realised that the times when I go against the crowd usually occur in the second half of the season, with regular Gameweek ranks under 50k.

This meant that I curbed my instincts during the first ten Gameweeks and stuck to a template, keeping with the crowd until at least ten weeks of subconscious data and eye tests get stored in my head, ready to go against the curve.

An opportunity to play aggressively

Auto Draft 29

Before the game’s recent launch, it’s what I thought I would do again. Once I had a look at the fixtures, I realised that the best two teams have a great start to the season. It would be quite logical to go along with the template and play the ‘long game’ with these value picks – as already discussed online, the premium full-backs offer immense value.

Then the game launched and this little paragraph really caught my attention:

‘Unlimited free transfers can also be made between Sat 12 Nov 19:00 and Mon 26 Dec 19:00 when the Premier League season has been adjusted to accommodate the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.’

This is quite a big macro factor. Essentially, we don’t have to think beyond Gameweek 16 at all and have two bites at making a team until then.

Then there is an extra Wildcard that everyone has to use in the gap before Gameweek 17. Given this added rule, there are a few trickle-down effects.

In a normal season, when deploying our Wildcard anywhere between Gameweeks 2-10, we’re building a very long-term team. One that will stick for at least 20 rounds until we usually use the second later on, around the Double Gameweek season.

This time, no matter what, you don’t need to look past Gameweek 16. The only things to carry forward, post-World Cup, are your team value and remaining chips.

For me, this means I can start the season more aggressively, target some fixtures and go ‘haul-chasing’. If things don’t work out, I’d then have no qualms deploying the Wildcard very early on. Additionally, as each team can now make five substitutions in a Premier League match, you can even look to ignore the bench early season and build unbalanced, lopsided teams that focus on targeting particular occasions.

Tread with caution with Chelsea

Whilst it would now take a lot to lead Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers away from ‘big at the back’ with explosive premium defenders, it’s worth noting that the game has also given us some cheap defensive assets who offer immense value.

It is way too early to be discussing a set-and-forget draft because we have so much to learn in pre-season: Manchester City will be playing with a proper number nine, Liverpool have a new-look front three, Chelsea are seemingly losing their entire defence and Manchester United have a new manager at the helm.

All things considered, I still see myself starting with five players from Man City and Liverpool but there are a couple of things that have caught my attention in terms of ‘opportunity’ and ‘tread with caution’.

For example, be careful with Chelsea’s defence. They have lost their best centre-back to Real Madrid and are seemingly going to lose a couple more from their backline. Due to this, there are murmurs of Thomas Tuchel potentially reverting to a four-man defence.

All things considered, their full-backs still offer tremendous value at £6.0m but the early fixtures don’t exactly scream ‘clean sheet’ to me. I am also questioning Chelsea’s elite defence status, given the huge reshuffling of personnel and system.

Thomas Tuchel is a manager not historically known for supreme defences and applied a ‘horses for courses’ approach when he first arrived at the club. Now he may look to evolve their tactics. I’ve nothing against Chelsea here, it is just something I’m monitoring closely.

Target the strong Spurs start

Afternoon all, basically toying around with the idea of having a good bench player i can rotate with a mid - be great for some input as im stuck 🙂

Saka, Neto, Greenwood (or any other 4.5m striker)
Odergaard, Bailey (also have Andreas), Johnson at Forest

Main reason im stuck i guess, is Odegaard, 1.5m cheaper will get me a striker that plays, but i can see Saka improving even more

Leaning towards Odergaard as gives me Johnson

I'm veering towards having a playing 3rd striker, as it's very likely that a cheapie-bandwagon rears its head early doors, be it Armstrong, Broja, Edouard, Mateta, Gelhardt or someone else.

Yeah, originally had Mateta but he'll be rotating with Edouard, even Zaha upfront too
Johnson at 6m i thinks great, but worth downgrading Saka to Odegaard for a 3rd striker?

        Cant work it out

6m feels a lot tougher than 5.5, doesn't it... I'm kind of expecting the warm-up games to show us which one between Mateta and Edouard will be favored early doors.

Yeah true, not trusting Palace forwards tbh - too much risk

Like having a bench and a 4.5m forward is pretty woeful

    First draft:
    Ramsdale (Forster);
    TAA, James, Dias, Trippier, Cash;
    Son, Luis Diaz, Bowen, Saka (Chuk);
    Haaland (Greenwood, Forss).

Quite different, not sure Son can do as well as last season though, extra 0.5 gets you Salah too

        1. @persecuted_by_mods

I can assure you that it is the majority fan view that Ronaldo carried the team and without him United would be in a perilous situation close to the relegation zone. This conclusion is arrived to with the excellent football analysis of simply removing Ronaldo's goals and calculating where Man Utd end up

It would be stupid enough to think this anyway but the fact that United did better in almost every single metric literally just a year before Ronaldo joined makes it extra idiotic

3 players scoring 8 each is better than one man scoring 15 goals after you sacrifice your whole team just to get him goals

Just here to happily say that the Haaland vs Nunez debate should be over...

Nunez has missed some absolute sitters this game with poor play in general, something I think is absolutely hilarious given the fact that Nunez was being compared to Haaland by delusional Liverpool fans. Haaland is significantly cheaper and much better all round, albeit he is yet to play for City but mark my words he will score on his debut 100%.

p.s. Liverpool fans in future dont be so quick to compare bang average players to elite footballers...laughing stock

And please give me lots of grief for this post hahaha.

Face the facts, he couldn't score up against Bailly or Lindelof.

Haaland would rip them to shreds.

The fact he had I believe three chance to score where he really should have found the back of the net but ruined them all is not showcasing his talents.

When he was on the pitch, the Utd defence was Heaton, AWB, Bailly, Telles, Malacia with Savage, Iqbal, Elanga, Amad, Pellistri and Van Der Beek in midfield/attack.

Utd's most first team was in the 1st half.

It wasn't even against Man United's first team.

However, it was only 30 or so minutes in a friendly.

Not double but yes Haaland is on more weekly wages.

But don't forget that Nunez was €100 million and Haaland was £51 million...

And Haaland is a proven goalscorer in a good league and the champions League too.

Liverpool panicking because their transfer business isn't as good as ours so splashed out on a bang average player ...

Yes we have spent a large amount but we have done so in an acceptable manner, before Grealish our most expensive signing was £68m I think.

And we don't pay extortionate wages of the top 10 highest paid wages of the PL only one or two city players feature!

Not significantly cheaper at all, £34 million paid out in agent fees, massive signing on bonus, much larger wages over the course of his contract. Nunez was the cheaper player.

Now I know Liverpool fans aren't the brightest so I'll just clarify that Ben Davies isn't the spurs Ben Davies, he's currently playing for Preston North End

And Kabak now plays for Norwich and his value has fallen by over £13million following his failure at Liverpool. MV was 22.5 now is 9

Jota, Dias, Salah, Mane, VVD, Alisson all big money moves. I'm not saying he's done great with every signing but Ox served his purpose and Nat Philips was only ever a stop gap when he had many CBs injured.

they spent £60 mil on a goalkeeper.

We spent £36 mil on Ederson and he has much better distribution etc etc

Haaland was £9million less than Alison and with inflation etc it's even more of a bargain that £60 mil transfer fee for Alison would be more like £63 mil making Haaland £12mil cheaper haha

I do think he will improve but frankly Liverpool calling out City for spending silly amounts of money on players then going on to buy a striker from Benifca for £100m doesn't add up.

          1. It’s not £100m
          2. You can’t really compare transfer net spending between City and Liverpool.

You don’t start the debate in a good place when you imply Nat Phillips was a wasted big money signing when he literally was an Academy product - and did very well for us.

I’m gonna give Nunez time. Arguably our biggest big money flop has been Keita and even he has had his moments.

It's a valid comparison. The two top teams in the premier League both spending £60-70m on a new striker from abroad. Not trying to argue Nunez is a better player right now, but soon he could be.

Haaland is the better player, never in doubt. Only social media wallies would say he’s not. Nunez COULD get better but he’s far more raw. It was never a debate. You’ve created it cos you’re a WUM.

Judging Nunez on some crap friendliest and not on how he tore up the CL and league in Portugal is just as stupid though. You’re basically choosing a friendly to back up an opinion to wind Liverpool fans up. If you want to use evidence, use actual competitive games from last season.

Why is he a South American pizza delivery boy? Is this because of his nationality and appearance?

Haaland cost 51 mill, is on 375k per week and had a signing on fee of 49 million.
Nunez cost 64 mill (could rise with add ons), is on 125k per week with a signing on fee of 5 mill.

Yes, let’s just look at the transfer fee.

Here we are stuffing our defences with premium defenders. By the start of the season, some of these could be available as starters:

    City - Cucurella 5m
    Pool - Konate 5m
    Chelsea - Ake 5m, Koulibaly 5.5m(?)
United - Varane nobbled, Bailly 4m.

Humour? I've got idiots trying to report me for standing up to them. They don't see any humour. I'm not referring to any current threads - I'm not paying much attention right now.

I saw you comment on a post about £5.5m midfielders "I'm not interested in crap players".

    Who is safer between those?

    A Foden
    B Mahrez
    C Grealish

You're delving into the mysteries of Peptation. There is no answer.

      The dark arts!
If I had to plump for one, I’d say Foden.
But if the wind changes and Pep wears a different pullover, it could be Grealish.

Then it starts to rain and Pep pulls on his designer Snow Goose and it’s Mahrez.

      Honestly no idea.

Disclaimer; I’m not inferring that Foden is a fair weather footballer, that Grealish plays well when it’s blowing up a storm or that Mahrez likes it wet!
      Just highlighting the uncertainty!
