Liverpool, Leeds United and Crystal Palace were in pre-season friendly action in the last 24 hours and we’ve got all the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points covered.

There’s goal, assist and line-up information, too, while Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout can view the pre-season minutes tracker at the bottom of this piece.

LIVERPOOL 5-0 RB LEIPZIG

  • Goals: Salah, Nunez x4
  • Assists: Firmino, Diaz, Alexander-Arnold, Elliott, Carvalho

Match highlights

Reports of Darwin Nunez‘s (£9.0m) ineptitude may have been greatly exaggerated – and now we have the opposite problem.

Such is the fickle world of Fantasy Football that yesterday’s donkey is today’s thoroughbred, with Darwin’s four-goal salvo against RB Leipzig seeing his FPL ownership steadily rise overnight.

“Too eager to impress but still early days” was our reasoned mitigation of his first two goalless pre-season run-outs, so there has to be just as much perspective-placing when things go right at the other end of the pitch.

Two of his strikes probably shouldn’t have happened: the first was a penalty that regular taker Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) stepped aside for, while the fourth owed much to some hideous handling from Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

“Mo gives Darwin the penalty and Darwin, Pandora’s box was open. That’s of course a perfect night for him.

“We always think that if you pay a lot of money then the players feel no pressure or whatever. They are all completely normal human beings and the first touch is not perfect then all of a sudden… This generation of players read social media, which is really not smart, but they do. All of a sudden you get in a rush and these kinds of things. That’s the best way obviously to stop all these discussions. He’s a different striker to what we have or what we had, but he’s a really good one.” – Jurgen Klopp

One positive view is that Darwin keeps finding himself in excellent goalscoring positions, whether the chances are spurned as they were against United and Palace or despatched in the manner they were against Leipzig. Getting lots and lots of opportunities is a good thing and, as we’ve seen with Salah over the years, you don’t have to be the most prolific of finishers to become a viable FPL option.

And the more options we Fantasy managers have, the less ‘template’ the game becomes – so let’s hope for the likes of Darwin, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) to give us plenty of selection headaches in 2022/23.

Diogo Jota‘s (£9.0m) injury hands Darwin a chance to impress from the off in Gameweek 1 against a defensively suspect Fulham, although Klopp does still have Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) available through the middle. It was, indeed, the Brazilian who started Thursday’s match alongside Salah and Luis Diaz (£8.0m) in the front three, with all of Darwin’s good work coming as a second-half substitute.

It was a business as usual elsewhere, with Salah scoring, as he always does, and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) assisting, as he always does. The usual defence for a match in Europe was in place at kick-off, too, with Ibrahima Konate (£5.0m) preferred over Joel Matip (£6.0m). Konate was frequently wheeled out in the cups at home and abroad last season, with Matip regularly starting in the league, although the former was occasionally called upon domestically when Liverpool were up against pace.

Substitutes Harvey Elliott (£5.0m) and Fabio Carvalho (£5.5m) also impressed in the front three in Thursday’s rout, each assisting a Darwin goal; they very likely won’t be in the starting XI come Gameweek 1 but can maybe expect to see a bit more game-time than usual this season, with the allowance of five substitutes presenting them with more cameo opportunities and the occasional start.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian (Davies 60′); Alexander-Arnold (Milner 60′), Konate (Matip 46′), Van Dijk (Gomez 60′), Robertson (Tsimikas 46′); Fabinho (Bajcetic 60′), Thiago (Jones 60′), Keita (Henderson 46′); Salah (Elliott 60′), Firmino (Nunez 46′), Diaz (Carvalho 60′)

LEEDS UNITED 1-1 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Rodrigo pen | Mateta
  • Assists: Summerville | Ayew

Rodrigo (£6.0m) was on target with a second-half penalty as Crystal Palace and Leeds United rounded off their tours Down Under.

A rusty-looking Patrick Bamford (£7.5m) and substitute Mateusz Klich (£5.0m), two takers of Leeds’ spot-kicks in the last couple of seasons, were both off the field at the time, however.

A bruising encounter in Perth saw the Whites lose two players to injury, with new signing Luis Sinisterra (£6.5m) and Adam Forshaw (£4.5m) both limping out of the action in the first half.

“Luis Sinisterra had a little hamstring injury. We’re hopeful it’s not too much or too long or too severe. Any time we have a hamstring injury, I’m totally dissatisfied because that’s reflective of everything we do with them physically. We’ll evaluate that and we hope it’s not so bad.

“And then Adam Forshaw had Mateta lean on him a little bit and tweaked his knee. We’re hopeful as well that one’s not so bad, but we’ll get more information on it in the next days.” – Jesse Marsch

Leeds already have four other players red-flagged for Gameweek 1, while Liam Cooper (£4.5m) hasn’t kicked a ball in pre-season because of an injury of his own.

Owners of Wolves assets will have watched today’s game with interest then, particularly those who are looking at Jonny (£4.5m). Leeds are down both of their usual left-back options for Gameweek 1, with the unconvincing Pascal Struijk (£4.5m) and midfielder Jack Harrison (£6.0m) each getting 45 minutes in that position here.

As for Palace, there are limited takeaways from their recent globetrotting as regulars such as Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), Marc Guehi (£4.5m), Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) and nearly all of their senior central midfield options were left at home.

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£5.5m) tapped into an empty net to hand the Eagles the draw here, with Jordan Ayew (£5.5m) providing the assist on the breakaway.

Leeds United XI: Meslier, Kristensen, Koch (Hjelde 45’), Llorente, Struijk (James 45’), Adams (Summerville 45’), Forshaw (Roca 33’ (Gyabi 61’)), Aaronson (Greenwood 45’), Harrison, Sinisterra (Rodrigo 14’ (Klich 61’)), Bamford (Gelhardt 45’).

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Clyne, Ward, Andersen, Mitchell, Milivojevic, Rak-Sakyi, Ozoh (Ebiowei 65’), Ayew (Street 84’), Mateta (Adaramola 84’), Edouard (Phillips 80’).

Not going to lie. I might consider Darwin v FUL (A) instead of Kane / Haaland.

You need to really be in a good position on your choices before that game and not be swayed too much

Making decisions solely based on one game is dangerous in my opinion.

From what I read Liverpool will play a slightly new system which is geared towards DN being the focal point which means he may have more chances. May also be frustrating at times if he misses chances

But not seen enough at the moment but he did miss a few chances v united and scored 4 in the last game so chances are coming

Then when Kane/Son get a couple G/A between them it'll shift again.

Serious answer - because he wasnt fit enough to play any part in their last friendly, and they only have 1 more before Community Shield, so there's very little bedding in time. I'm not off him as such, but timing will be important, and it might be worth preparing some backup plans in case he's not quite ready come GW1

I wouldn't worry about this too much, most sources say he'll be ready for the community shield and was only left out of the last one as a precaution

            This.
Whilst a long-term injury is terrible for a player in real life football.
The dreaded 'niggle' is what hurts us in FPL football!

I still have Haaland in my draft, but it's worth noting his 'injury record' at Dortmund. Never really badly injured, but often had niggles and managed minutes.
Yet another point to muse over.

    Haaland and Kulu

I'm going the latter, but doubting myself.
Might need to transfers if/when Wilson breaks

    Meslier / Klaesson
    Robertson / Dias / Trippier / Dier / Williams
Salah / De Bruyne / Mount / Coutinho / Andreas
    Jesus / Wilson / Greenwood

Just waiting for Liam Delap to go to Southampton to make 343 a viable option

West ham interested in signing Kostić. He has created the same amount of chances as Trent since 18/19 season.

One of the best at his position & proper specialist at dead ball situations. Fpl will most likely price him as a defender & likely same price as Perišić (5.5).

So many options this season! Hope they sign him.

Isn't he naturally a winger who's being playing wing back since Frankfurt moved to a back 3? Unless West Ham are changing formations he'd probably play on the wing for them and will be a midfielder in the game.

Even if he is classified as a midfielder i'd still be tempted. As you say he's a menace on set pieces and West Ham have good threat in the air. Plus if they sign a big striker like Broja or Scamacca his crossing would create loads of chances for them.

Very similar to mine. Main difference is I have Vardy and Son over Kane and Mahrez, as I think they are a comfortably better duo, and I have a baseline bargain basement bench.

To improve your team, I would downgrade the bench or Digne to put more money into the XI, and I would avoid the double Arse GKs as if blocks you from jumping on Saka, Nketiah, ESR, Martinelli, Odegaard, Vieira, Zinchenko, Tierney, who could all break out as great value

Mitchell missed a sitter, header from 5 yards out.
Gelhardt looked lively again and has outperformed Bamford.
Klich has been really poor and probably lost his place in the team.
The Leeds youngsters are outshining the senior players.
Palace should have won it at the end, Summerville got caught in possession and Palace broke after Klich (again) missed an important tackle, Palace had a 2 on 1 but Harrison put in an amazing last ditch challenge.

      Cheers for this.

I was watching, particularly second half.

I think Leeds should be a team to target against for clean sheets. I doubt they score too much.

Ebiowei 4.5, might get some good minutes off the bench.

Agreed regarding Gelhardt. Great option providing he plays with Bamford.

Cheers, I'll leave the Leeds report to you this time. Don't have much to add except that we looked quite vulnerable on the break, especially in the gaps left behind by Kristensen's forays forward

The standout players so far have been Forshaw (who went off injured), Greenwood, Geldhardt and Kristensen.
Left-back is a major issue, Leif Davis hasn't really proved himself nor has Hljede. Struijk awkward there, Harrison probably did the best job but we are short of wingers for GW1. I think we will trial 3412 in the next friendly.

    Robbo Cancelo White Chilwell
    Son Diaz Rashford Mount
    Kane Jesus

    Gazzaniga / Neco / Andreas / Archer

Seeing more and more No Salah drafts on here too

Been stuck on a 5-4-1 formation which isn't normal for me. Please let me know your thoughts. I like BrunoG - do you think he'll give a good return?

    De Gea or 5.0

    TAA James Chilwell Cancelo Tomiyasu

    Saka Maddi Salah BrunoG

    Kane

Personally not a fan of BrunoG, to me most of his threat is shots from outside the box. Nothing wrong with that it's just i think last season was an anomaly.

Love the Maddison pick, i've got him as well and think he's being overlooked because of the other players at the same price.

If Sini is injured for GW1 and with Dan James banned then Leeds might have to change system (no left back either).
Will probably play 4222 with Harrison left back and Aaronson / Rodrigo attacking mids.
But could also play 3412 which would be amazing for Kristensen.
    ---------- Gelhardt -- Bamford ----------
    ---------------- Aaronson -------------------
    Harrison - Roca - Adams - Kristensen
    ---- Struijk -- Llorente -- Koch ----------
    ----------------- Meslier ---------------------

He's been super impressive but it looks like Bamford may be on course to start GW1 so Gelhardt isn't really a safe starter - still plenty of other options. My bet for GW1 lineup is this:
        Meslier
        Kristensen Llorente Koch Davis/Struijk
        Adams Roca
        Aaronson Rodrigo Harrison
        Bamford

        1. LangerznMash

This is possible but Rodrigo RW and Aaronson CAM.

        • 9 Years

Marsch has played 3412 at times with his previous clubs. Kristensen is a natural wingback.
I'd rather play Harrison at left wingback, than Struijk/Hjelde/Davis at leftback.

Yeah fair enough - between you & me, as a possible experiment in the next friendly, it could happen. Just thought maybe its a bit speculative to show this formation to the neutrals as they may not realise the more 'standard' option.

    Settled on this for now.

    Ederson
    TAA - James - Jonny
    Salah - Mahrez - Diaz - Martinelli - Neto
    Kane - Jesus

    Steele - Neco - L Taylor - Vestegaard

Few givens with this team -

    1. Guaranteed WC in gw 7 or 8
    2. Kane > Haaland in gw 2
    3. Neto failure plan - Shift to Gray/Gordon in gw3 for Everton good fixtures
    4. Got two 8m mids in case Mount, Kulu, Bowen or Madisson becomes hot property. Easy switch
    5. Great rotation of neco and Jonny till wc
    6. Going heavy on attackers from big teams with good fixtures for the first 8 or so gws ( city, pool and arsenal)
    7. Covered pool, city and Chelsea defense
    8. Not missing out on any highly owned players that can affect rank other than Cancelo
    9. Differentials in Mahrez and Diaz

    Thoughts? 🙂

I’ve been playing the game for 15+ years and have only ever started 3 at the back. Last years stats do suggest big at the back is the way to go but I’m not convinced. I suspect I might compromise this season and play 4 at the back with Neco firmly on the bench.
Also in 15+ years I don’t think I’ve ever gone anything other than 4.5 (4.0) for my keepers. I doubt that will change this year even though I can see the appeal of your 5.5 keeper.
Otherwise, not sure about your point 5 and also is 2 wolves a good idea, weren’t they absolutely woeful last season?
Are you confident Mahrez starts more this season? If not, then maybe avoid him?

    (A) Sterling + Neto
    (B) Maddison and Mahrez (or other 8m)

Rest of midfield is Salah and 4.5m bench! Feeling the Sterling pick but that extra 2m is feeling the squeeze now!!
