Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway this time next week and one of the main sources of debate among FPL managers each and every week will be over Manchester City’s line-up.

It’s been a summer of change at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland arriving but some big-name players exiting.

Long-time Fantasy Football Scout user middyjim – aka the excellent @City_Tactics account – talks us through the tactical tweaks that Pep Guardiola might make this season.

‘You have to shake. You have to move. With the same guys it’s almost impossible.’ – Pep Guardiola, May 2021

Manchester City did try to add to their ranks in the months that followed the above quote but advances for Harry Kane (£11.5m) were rebuffed and the only major changes saw the arrival of Jack Grealish (£7.0m) and the departure of Sergio Agüero.

A year later, City shook.

Out have gone Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), with over a quarter of a century’s service between them, replaced by Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Julián Álvarez (£6.5m). A left-back is seemingly imminent too, whether it’s Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) or otherwise.

How could this affect City’s tactical set-up and approach? Here are some potential changes we could see.

A Double Pivot

Guardiola has generally deployed a 4-3-3 since arriving in the north west, with two number 8s providing the creative flair in midfield. But in the second half of last season, City began to use a version of the 4-2-3-1 in some matches, with Ilkay Gündoğan (£7.5m) or Bernardo Silva (£7.0m) sitting in next to Rodri (£6.0m). It helps City in the build-up, adding an extra technical player, and it was usually deployed against teams who pressed high.

When the opponent presses they have an extra man to pick up deep in City’s midfield and spaces open up behind them for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) to drift into. The champions’ full-backs can hold width and are given more licence to push forward.

City build with a Rodri and Gündoğan double pivot and wide full-backs, allowing De Bruyne to push high at Molineux in May

When City press in a 4-4-2, De Bruyne joins the front man in the initial press. Allied to a double pivot in the build-up, it results in De Bruyne playing higher up the pitch, where he’s more dangerous.

Haaland and De Bruyne form the first line of the press vs Bayern Munich with Bernardo and Rodri sitting in midfield

De Bruyne’s returns in the second half of last season speak for themselves. Notably, his re-introduction to the team, after fitness issues in mid-December, brought Bernardo’s hot streak to a swift conclusion.

  • Potential Winners: De Bruyne, Cancelo, Walker, new left-back
  • Potential Losers: Gündoğan, Bernardo

Quicker Transitions

If you’ve signed a Tremendous Nordic Meat Shield, it would be remiss not to utilise his freakish physical prowess. Haaland’s speed and intelligence in transition has led to a glut of goals in the Bundesliga.

That isn’t a natural fit for Guardiola’s side, who have developed into a patient, metronomic team where control is King. The swashbuckling days of Sterling and Leroy Sane bombing down the wings are long gone. City’s play is slower and more precise.

But now the Citizens not only have one of the world’s most lethal attackers in transition, they also possess a player with an unparalleled combination of on-ball running power and passing range to orchestrate them in De Bruyne. It seems likely that Guardiola will try to take advantage by introducing quick transitions when City win the ball back deep. Keep an eye out for De Bruyne staying high out of possession, almost taking up ‘false nine’ positions, with Haaland stalking the channels looking to get in behind.

Belgium used De Bruyne like this in transitions in Euro 2020. Playing high but dropping off the centre-backs to feed Lukaku in the channels

  • Potential Winners: Haaland, De Bruyne

    Kane and James (archer)
    Or
    Jesus and Cancelo/Robo (toney)

Toney to play from week 3 onwards. Currently have cancelo Robo and Jesus option. Considering getting Kane in with the other downgrades (Robo or cancelo)

In my opinion, forcing Jesus in to a threemium breaks it. Trying to get Diaz and Jesus on top of the 3 premiums absolutely trashes it.

Don’t get why anyone would ignore the big hitting defenders. This team is a gw3 wildcard.

In the last two seasons, Son was the one who forced me to take hits, shape structure, and get him in.

My key decision seems to be Kane or Son.

I like Son for the comparable goal & assist potential, more points for goal, CS point.
I also somehow have more confidence in captaining attacking midfielder.

Structure wise, Kane give flexibility for getting Haaland too.

Do anyone have this dilemma? Which route do you go?

Same issue. I prefer Son individually, but prefer my structure with Kane as I’d have 2x4.5 on the bench without him. Feel both will do well so going with Kane for the structure. If Salah isn’t firing early Son will come in.

Yeah the main preseason dilemma for me has been choosing 2 of Son/Kane KDB/Haaland. Son has extraordinary numbers under Conte, the benefits of being a mid, and was the clear captaincy pick over Kane for me last season. Since Bissouma is the only CM addition, I also assumed Kane would persist in dropping deep & acting playmaker, although I haven't seen so much of this in their friendlies.

On the other hand, Kane's xG comfortably trumped Son last year, and he looks really fit & sharp atm. And since I'm leaning KDB over Haaland, I prefer the shape of my KDB/Kane 352 draft over the KDB/Son 451. But ultimately I dont think I want to second guess my main captain choice for the sake of having an extra 8m mid or for general structure

The 451 shape is a bit less flexible than 352 or 442. If Jesus starts well then you'll probably want him to go with either Kane or Haaland - that's why I reluctantly abandoned 451 at the start.

Would you feel worse if you got Grealish and he disappointed, or if you got Saka and Grealish hauled?

Definitely the former because I’d be locked out of an 8m mid without 2 transfers. Thanks.

I'm going to wait & see, mainly because much of his appeal to me stems from his linkup with Haaland, which may take a bit of time to pay off if Erling is eased in

All true. I guess it’s a case of trying to plan for a season when we only need our short term squads right now. I’ll stick him on the watchlist

Don't think you can to be honest......not without it impacting your defence or forward line.

Three 8m+ forwards is a bit much for me personally and feel there's more points to be gotten from the midfielders

As far as a salah haaland kane Jesus taa cancelo team can go.. it’s not too bad. Lots of heavy hitters. Hopefully Bailey pays off for you. Good luck.

For a 3mium-plus-Jesus there's not much different you can do. I've got a version where Cancelo is downgraded to beef up the defence and midfield a bit.
It's basically a squad where you'll have magnificent weeks, but you'll also get dumped out of Last Man Standing super-quick.

I’d use the 0.5 to upgrade GK. Ramsdale my choice, but then would need to change Zinc. Maybe to Cash.

I’m also not convinced Chelsea will start the season that well, but James can always be a threat.

      Otherwise like it!

    Best 4.5 Arsenal defender?

Tricky. Tomiyasu is getting back to fitness but don't know when he'll be ready and whether he'll be back in the Starting XI. Saliba and White could both start GW1 but none, one or both could be benched for GW2. For safety, I've gone with a 5m pick.

He's absolutely first choice. Only missed out on the starting 11 last season when injured. Can also play at RB if necessary to cover Tomiyasu.

Are you able to set up private cups on fpl with say 4 or 8 people throughout the season? Say if we wanted like a little mini knockout tournament every month of the season??

I had him in my original draft but there are now two issues. He may be eased in and Chelsea defence might need to bed in.

Seems very unlikely. He’s only played 45 mins of pre season and is playing a behind closed doors game today which in itself indicates he’s probably some way off.
