Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway this time next week and one of the main sources of debate among FPL managers each and every week will be over Manchester City’s line-up.

It’s been a summer of change at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland arriving but some big-name players exiting.

Long-time Fantasy Football Scout user middyjim – aka the excellent @City_Tactics account – talks us through the tactical tweaks that Pep Guardiola might make this season.

‘You have to shake. You have to move. With the same guys it’s almost impossible.’ – Pep Guardiola, May 2021

Manchester City did try to add to their ranks in the months that followed the above quote but advances for Harry Kane (£11.5m) were rebuffed and the only major changes saw the arrival of Jack Grealish (£7.0m) and the departure of Sergio Agüero.

A year later, City shook.

Out have gone Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), with over a quarter of a century’s service between them, replaced by Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Julián Álvarez (£6.5m). A left-back is seemingly imminent too, whether it’s Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) or otherwise.

How could this affect City’s tactical set-up and approach? Here are some potential changes we could see.

A Double Pivot

Guardiola has generally deployed a 4-3-3 since arriving in the north west, with two number 8s providing the creative flair in midfield. But in the second half of last season, City began to use a version of the 4-2-3-1 in some matches, with Ilkay Gündoğan (£7.5m) or Bernardo Silva (£7.0m) sitting in next to Rodri (£6.0m). It helps City in the build-up, adding an extra technical player, and it was usually deployed against teams who pressed high.

When the opponent presses they have an extra man to pick up deep in City’s midfield and spaces open up behind them for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) to drift into. The champions’ full-backs can hold width and are given more licence to push forward.

City build with a Rodri and Gündoğan double pivot and wide full-backs, allowing De Bruyne to push high at Molineux in May

When City press in a 4-4-2, De Bruyne joins the front man in the initial press. Allied to a double pivot in the build-up, it results in De Bruyne playing higher up the pitch, where he’s more dangerous.

Haaland and De Bruyne form the first line of the press vs Bayern Munich with Bernardo and Rodri sitting in midfield

De Bruyne’s returns in the second half of last season speak for themselves. Notably, his re-introduction to the team, after fitness issues in mid-December, brought Bernardo’s hot streak to a swift conclusion.

  • Potential Winners: De Bruyne, Cancelo, Walker, new left-back
  • Potential Losers: Gündoğan, Bernardo

Quicker Transitions

If you’ve signed a Tremendous Nordic Meat Shield, it would be remiss not to utilise his freakish physical prowess. Haaland’s speed and intelligence in transition has led to a glut of goals in the Bundesliga.

That isn’t a natural fit for Guardiola’s side, who have developed into a patient, metronomic team where control is King. The swashbuckling days of Sterling and Leroy Sane bombing down the wings are long gone. City’s play is slower and more precise.

But now the Citizens not only have one of the world’s most lethal attackers in transition, they also possess a player with an unparalleled combination of on-ball running power and passing range to orchestrate them in De Bruyne. It seems likely that Guardiola will try to take advantage by introducing quick transitions when City win the ball back deep. Keep an eye out for De Bruyne staying high out of possession, almost taking up ‘false nine’ positions, with Haaland stalking the channels looking to get in behind.

Belgium used De Bruyne like this in transitions in Euro 2020. Playing high but dropping off the centre-backs to feed Lukaku in the channels

  • Potential Winners: Haaland, De Bruyne

    TAA
    Cancelo
    Salah
    KDB
    Son
    Haaland
    Kane

From this list, who 100% needs to be in your side?

I’m going to be boring and say 1 and 3 are both so essential that order doesn’t matter. I know it’s boring to keep getting the same players - I get that same instinct - but I do think that leads us some to waiting to overlook the evidence.

Salah and Trent have consistently for several seasons now posted stats that are truly remarkable from and fpl perspective. Coupled with absolute nailedness and early fixtures I can see no logic of going without.

none really, i have TAA, Cancelo, Kane out of that list currently, but i've made plenty of drafts with Robbo instead of TAA, 6m City defender instead of Cancelo, and a whole bunch of forwards instead of Kane, of course it probably wouldn't be smart to have none at all but i can live without anyone of them individually

      Salah Son and Trent.
I’m basically favouring Son over Kane, Haaland and KDB (for now)
Cancelo should be a must and trying to afford him

1,3,6 for me. But then if you could downgrade and improve the team then no-one is really essential. I reckon this year is the first year where no-one is really essential!

Personally, neither, i have never gone for the more expensive keepers ever. Prefer to rotate 4.5s. It depends, if Cancelo plays on the left then A otherwise B

Any thoughts on this Salah less team?
Would need to be brave but the upside could be massive if KDB matches or outperforms the Egyptian Messi.

    TAA | Robbo | Dias | Zinchenko
    KDB | Saka | Diaz | Neto | Andreas
    Kane | Jesus

Looks good but yes must be very brave to leave Salah.

In fact, from gw 20-38 , Salah only get 7.1 points per start when KDB and Son get 8.2 and 8.1 points each.

Any thoughts on this lot please?

    Meslier - 4.0
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Tomiyasu - Williams
    Salah - Grealish - Bruno G - Gordon/Dele - Andreas
    Kane - Jesus - Martial

    Thanks!

don't like it mate sorry, your keeper plays for Leeds, Tomi is an injury doubt, Grealish is coming off the back of a 3g 3a season, Bruno g is pretty much a defensive midfielder though does have goals in his locker, Gordon/Dele are a no, same as Martial until Ronaldo leaves

      1. Boberella

I agree with all of this, Although I think BrunoG is a decent pick for 6m. Could easily be Bailey if he doesn’t look attacking enough.

Could work out but a bit risky with Martial, Grealish, Bruno G, Gordon/Dele and Tomiyasu all in the same team.
Would also be a bit tricky picking two from Tomiyasu, Bruno G and Gordon/Dele each week.

Enjoy the creativity, but definitely a bit risky. If you can shift team around a bit with some differentials like Bruno G, I like it.

Can I get some feedback on my team this far pls?

    Ramsdale
    TAA | Dalot | Cancelo | Trippier
    Salah | Rashford | Mahrez | Neto
    Kane | Jesus

    Caballero | Andreas | Neco | Archer

Tripper could be James as I have 1.5m ITB still.

    Any changes you would make?

    Feedback welcomed.

With 1.5 left over, a starting 4.5D, and a weak bench, I’d upgrade Rashford to an 8.0 midfielder (even though I have him myself).

      Why Caballero as your backup?

Unless i hear otherwise, I thnik Rashford is nailed in my team. Agree he has been terrible for 2 years, but if he plays and performs like he can, he is a 9m value striker playing in midfield at 6.5. Risk but huge potential upside.

looks good, plenty of options to jump from Rashford if he doesn't work out, Trossard would be top of my list personally but with 1.5itb you could even just get another 8m guy

    How does this team look?

    GK
    Meslier - Klaesson

Leeds look weak in attack (so hopefully BPs for Meslier) and should be improved at the back (more CSs), but not so much that Meslier won’t get saves.

    D
    TAA - Cancelo - Robertson - Cash - Neco

Three big D and will likely swap out Cash after the first 3-4 plum fixtures. Not convinced by Chelsea’s D in preseason. The back line will need time to gel, James has been all over the pitch (less attacking points if he’s CB or they play a back 4) and Chilwell isn’t fit.

    M
    Salah - Maddison - Rashford - Bailey - Pereira

Maddison got a lot of points off his first three opponents (BRE, ARS, SOU) last season and I can easily switch from him to whichever 8.0/City midfielder if needed. Rashford and Bailey are punts, but Rashford has high upside at 6.5 and Bailey, like Cash, has good fixtures the first few weeks.

    F
    Kane - Jesus - Plange

Going with Kane to start the season, but he could be an early swap if Haaland looks great GW1. Will swap Plange for Delap if he gets SOU move.

He was amazing in the first half last year, then average in the second half. If you believe that was due to ACON only, then he is a must pick after a summer rest (and then no World Cup). If a spent force then not worth it. I think the former currently.

Which I do not mind. I am riding with Travers even though I know it will not be popular here. An upgrade on Henry would be nice, but I like the other four defenders I have. The issue is midfield - Salah a must but then no options really appeal to me. KDB is the only player missing in this team, and I could swap Haaland for him and restructure slightly.

    2. lugs
      • 8 Years

haven't seen Fornals or Aaronson in many teams, Fornals is decent and he'll tick along modestly but consistently for his price, he could well be the best 5.5, no idea what to expect from the other guy, but its an interesting team

      1. Lav
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

With Jimenez injured, I really do not fancy Neto as the 5.5m pick. Plus I do not think the fixtures are that good, and Wolves were not largely impressive end of last season. As you said, Fornals will do what he does and be fine in the short term as the season shakes out.

Unsure on Aaronson too, but I know he will be the creative outlet for Leeds. Only thing I am tempted to do I think is KDB over Haaland, thus restructuring slightly.

Yep. West Ham played City hard both times last season, and I doubt City keep a clean sheet GW1 (especially with Laporte out and Zinchenko gone). Also, you can easily swap Diaz or Maddison to a City midfielder in a few weeks.

I’d personally prefer to have a premium striker just in case I need to switch to Haaland though.

    A:
    Allison (4.0)
    TAA Cancelo James Zinny (Neco)
    Salah Mount Odegaard Bailey (Perreira)
    Jesus Kane (4.5)

    B:
    Allison (4.0)
    TAA Cancelo James Neco (Patterson)

right now i think i prefer 1, but that could change after the community shield later

True. Makes my night easier for now, but I think I am close. Definitely locked in on Fornals. Dunk/Henry, Diaz/Aaronson, Haaland only players I feel like potentially tinkering based on Community Shield now.

        Thanks for help tonight mate.

      A is safe

      B is riskier

With 8-10m people playing, you’re going to have to take risks / go with your gut if you actually want to try to win. So risk it now or later. Make your own decision

I have Trippier atm for the 5.0 and I can't justify the swap.
we don't know position, minutes, if his on pitch time will translate to FPL points.
With Trip, nailed, set pieces and known.
To risky......if he starts firing, he will be in my team, but until then I am happy to wait
