All 20 Premier League clubs’ seasons so far are analysed in our Half-Term Report series as the countdown to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) restart continues.

FPL bosses will get unlimited transfers before Gameweek 17, so these articles will hopefully help you pinpoint some key targets for the Boxing Day resumption.

Here, we focus on bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It’s not only our final piece of the series but, whisper it quietly, perhaps the least useful. All of the stats date from the Bruno Lage era, and he’s now been replaced by Julen Lopetegui at the helm.

You can read up on the new Wolves boss here, while we’ve got Scout Notes on all of their mid-season friendlies in our complete guide to the restart.

This piece will, at least, attempt to bring to light what Lopetegui has to deal with in his in-tray.

ATTACK: SEASON SO FAR

TotalRank v other clubs (adjusted per game)
Goals scored820th
Shots17711th
Shots in the box10315th
Shots on target4818th=
Big chances1819th
Expected goals (xG)15.3417th
Non-penalty expected goals (NPxG)13.7618th

Top of the pile on the to-do list: the attack.

There’s no secret as to why Wolves are where they are in the Premier League table right now, sitting as they are rock bottom for goals scored.

On only one occasion did Lage’s erstwhile troops score more than one goal in a league match, that happening against Brighton in Gameweek 15.

They have the worst shot-to-goal conversion rate in the league (4.5%), no surprise perhaps when 74 of their 177 efforts have come from outside the area.

But even ‘big chance’ conversion is abysmal, at 29.4%.

The struggle for goals is nothing new, as any Wolves fan will tell you, and they ranked 17th and 16th for goals scored in the two seasons that preceded this one.

DEFENCE: SEASON SO FAR

TotalRank v other clubs (adjusted per game)
Goals conceded2413th
Clean sheets410th=
Shots conceded19813th
Shots in the box conceded13012th
Shots on target conceded639th
Big chances conceded245th=
Expected goals conceded (xGC)19.598th
Non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC)18.018th

Wolves’ defence hasn’t been too bad this season, giving Lopetegui a base to start from.

The West Midlanders actually concede big chances at a lower rate than champions Manchester City, so they perform fairly well on the xGC front as a result:

Above: How Wolves compare to other Premier League sides for minutes per NPxGC across 2022/23 (click to expand)

Their defensive numbers have mostly improved across the board compared to 2021/22 – the difference this time being that Jose Sa (£5.0m) has turned from Lev Yashin into Lionel Perez:

Jose Sa’s expected goals prevented (xGP)
2022/23-4.90
2021/22+7.50

I really want Salah and KDB, but need to sacrifice Cancelo. Is it worth it? This is what I have currently:

    Kepa (Ward)
    Gabriel, Shaw, Trippier (Botman, Bueno)
    Martinelli, Salah, KDB, Rashford, Andreas
    Haaland, Darwin (Greenwood)

I don't see an issue with starting Andreas, he's proving himself a v tidy option. As many points as Rashford who is now flavour of the month, 75% of Salah's points too, and with a double coming up, for only 4.6m.

Getting rid of Salah gives a bit more balance. Something like this:

      Kepa (Ward)
      James, Cancelo, Trippier (Gabriel, Bueno)
      Martinelli, Almiron, KDB, Rashford, Andreas
      Haaland, Darwin (Mitro)

Martial is a transfer waiting to happen but other than that it's good, can't see any reason to go Salah over KDB unless you actually want less points?

Same as my team except for Martial, not sure you need him and Rashford. I'm tempted to go Mitro with DGW in mind and bench for Patterson this GW, or you could take a punt on Nketiah or Adams.

I rate him for the restart. But kdb is looking good, and nunez offers an alternative.

I got rid of him at the start of this GW (seems like a lifetime ago now!) and was ready to go with Diaz as a cheaper alternative.

However, the news that Diaz and Jota will be out longer than anticipated made me get him back.

Him having penalties in his locker sways it for me over KdB. Plus, Pep roulette means I can’t trust that KdB actually starts both DGW games.

No such worries with Salah, who without Diaz, Firmino or Jota eating into his opportunities should now be seeing a lot more chances coming his way.

    Merry Xmas all, quick question:

Does Potter rotation like he did with Lamptey not put people off of James? (Same position)

      Merry Xmas to you too!

A bit, but can’t see Potter keep fielding strange sides losing points in must-win-games.

But if James gets hooked pre 60 or benched in the first 3, then I’ll swap him and blame Potter (and myself)

Several things put me off him right now.

At this point in time, I’m spending that money on Saliba. He’s a constant goal threat in a better team and a better defence. And he’s nailed on.

The 2021 pre injury version of James is a steal at £5.8m, but for the life of me I genuinely don’t think that is who you are going to be getting right now.

Based on fixtures it seems 3 city players are essential. Haaland, KDB are locked for me. For the 3rd, I suppose the obvious pick is Cancelo but would anyone think it may he a good idea to go with Foden instead for an all out city attack?

I wondered the same but there are a lot of good and cheap midfield options. I bet against Cancelo successfully at the end of the first half of the season but reckon he could go big again now

I'd like that, but rotation risk is annoying. There are also too many other viable midfielders for that risk

I’ve only got two, Cancelo and Haaland.

KdB is the only City mid worth considering, imo, and he’s subject to Pep roulette like everyone else, so there’s no guarantee for me that he starts both DGW games.

    Thoughts on this Draft?
Pretty happy apart from the 3.8m Def

    Kepa
    Cancelo - James - Trippier
    Salah - Trossard - Rashford - Martinelli
    Haaland - Darwin - Wilson

    Ward - Andreas - White - B.Williams +0.0m

    0,2m off this. Any suggestions?

    Ward Iversen
    Cancelo James Trippier (White Bueno)
    Salah KdB Rash Martinelli Almiron
    Haaland Martial (Greenwood)

I’ve drafted a four-memium that is starting to look very tempting:

    Ward
    Trippier James Shaw
    KDB Salah Almirion Andreas
    Halaand Kane Martial

    Iversen Summerville Patterson Bueno

    £0 ITB.

Andreas starting is a weak point, so planning to rotate with whichever sub has the best fixture in a given week. What else am I missing?

Andreas + Summerville +/- Bailey is actually a good rotation. I have that in mind for my first sub spot

I want to say there are a few too many concessions here, but you've got another wildcard anyway. My main issue is that Darwin is back at number 9, so Salah's gonna be affected again. It happened in the Cup game already

That Darwin point is the one I’ve been battling with. If Darwin is going to be consistently outscoring Salah, then he has to go and I can make upgrades elsewhere.

        Food for thought for sure

I’m not sure Darwin will, though.

And in midweek Salah scored and Darwin got an assist only.

If anything, Mo should get more chances now that Jota, Firmino and Diaz are all out.

People need to get this thought that Andreas asa starter is a weak point out of their heads.

He is a perfectly viable starter.

4 premiums. This could work, eh

    Salah | Rashford | Martinelli | Groß | Almiron
    Kane | Haaland

    Ward | Patterson | Bueno | Greenwood

    Thanks

Anyone going without Spurs players? Only 2 ok fixtures in next 7 + fatigue of some players + injuries + fitness concerns...

I would like to have Kane, but his price killing me

    Merry Christmas people!
    Woke up thinking about Almiron…
He is a completely different player this season playing RW and getting pen area touches.
I was doubting him and I still do but let’s hope numbers don’t lie so I prefer him to Wilson atm. Is he worth?

Yes - has gone up in value so depends on how much you have for midfielder
