The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

No team with confirmed double yet. As long as Chelsea v City tomorrow not a draw we know City and Spurs will double in 20. Hopefully any other double will be confirmed early next week

Manchester United also like to double in GW21 v Palace or Leeds now they don't require a cup replay. Plenty of potential GW22 and GW23 doubles as well (see link below) but nothing yet confirmed yet.

would you switch out Cancelo this week?
The free fund could let me do Darwin > Kane (for a hit)

I am not sure I like a hit this week, but it is clear Cancelo needs to go so it could be worth it.

Not much help, I know, but it is a tricky one IMO.

Who would you bring in for Cancelo? City would make no sense as you take away the upside from the Kane side of the hit. Tough one.

Tricky one- certainly if Spurs double confirmed worth considering ( but fixtures not great) and hoping Kane does not get yellow in first game and misses home game. Personally not considering move as would be captaining Haaland over Kane and rather use transfer elsewhere

Don't fancy many cleans for Spurs & leaning towards keeping Darwin tbh, hit deters me too given fixtures. Also want to see City line ups next 2 before deciding on Cancelo. Apologies if you were looking for some confirmation bias but not keen on those moves way things stand.

Brighton vs Liverpool has all the trappings of a basketball game, while City and Arsenal are good defences. Lose Darwin after

      • 7 Years

      Nope

Definitely not Perisic. Spurs are very leaky and face too many good attacks in the next 7 games

Cancelo is the only priority because he's not a starter. Mitoma should be gold against Liverpool defence

      Cancelo + Zaha > Schar/Stones + Mitoma

Darwin to Kane for free in GW21 instead

You have Nketiah for the next two. Tap into the Brighton attack first. Arsenal mid will come in for Mount in GW22, and the best one, for now, is Odegaard. Could have changed again by then

Any of them could end up being the best. It's like the Arsenal situation. The team is so good now that all their assets suddenly look great. I like Mitoma because of his stats, the eye test, how nailed he is, and the fact that he has all that while being the cheapest. Makes too much sense

I mean no harm here, but this looks like you're trolling

Newcastle has some of the best possible fixtures coming up. You're losing Almiron without getting another Newcastle player for that run

Garnacho isn't a starter, while Summerville is and Mitoma offers a lot more promise

White faces Spurs and Man U next, while Cucurella faces Palace

There is nothing wrong with Mitrovic. Only the Newcastle defence has a good chance of stopping him in his next 7 fixtures. Maybe Chelsea, at a push

People are taking hits to sell Darwin

What's going on here? These are enough hits for a wildcard, but the previous team can outscore the one you're getting

In any case... Roll FT, or spend one of your two FTs on someone who's not a starter (anymore). That's my advice here. Any move involving the starters you're selling has a risk of backfiring

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years

Are you reacting to a bad GW19 score and selling your disappointing assets? That's the best explanation I can imagine atm

You already have the best one, imo. If you have Andreas, the only move I'd suggest is Andreas to Mitoma and bench Mitro vs Newcastle, is all

Could work, but I'd like to see him settled in that new role first. Mitoma has already laid down a marker and he's even had some bad luck with disallowed goals

Understood. Mitoma's proven himself in his role against an array of EPL opponents, and passes all the usual FPL asset tests, while somehow also being the cheapest. As I said far down the page, this could easily end up like the Arsenal mid situation

Don't bother much about the best, just get one of 'em and ride the wave

There will be bigger game weeks to use FH. Not sure would want to use it with fixtures for all teams doubling hard ( and we still don’t know if City and Spurs will double- if they do Kane would miss second game if picked up yellow in first game). If City Spurs do double would rather play TC on Haaland.

If Salah isn't worth the price, KDB definitely isn't

Wrong time to sell Salah, especially for a hit. Brighton vs Liverpool might run up to any score you (reasonably) imagine, and both teams proved this yet again today

Roll FT. Martial to Ferguson at a push, but I'd rather roll

The fixtures this GW are bad for hits

Think do B seeing how it's North London Derby. I don't see Martial doing much or Salah against Brighton. If I had Darwin then I would keep. Much better value in midfield Salah not cutting it. Liverpool look shocking they don't have that attacking presents since losing Mane

      Hi there

There's no reason to keep Cancelo atm. Pep described starting him out of position as a "mistake", but he didn't rectify this mistake by pushing him back to full-back. Nope, he subbed Cancelo and Walker off at half-time for Lewis and Ake, his regular full-backs of the past few games. Joao is out of the first team for now

Cancelo to Schar or Botman now. I prefer Schar, as he has a lot more goal threat and you can afford to bench Schar if he gets a fifth yellow, because...

      Bueno to Stones/Akanji/Lewis/Estupinan for GW21

        Hiya mate!!

Yeah I think you’re absolutely right!! Seems strange with him being the most reliable player to get from city’s defence for so long now, and too
Much money to have him not nailed so I agree he needs to go!!

I like Schar and Botman, also looked at Ben Mee, what do you think to him mate? Brentford’s next 3 home fixtures are decent for clean sheet chances I think!! Bournemouth, Saints and Palace

I don't like Brentford's defensive stats. They rely too much upon Raya, and that's not sustainable

Newcastle is an elite defence and I like having a double-up for their next 4, at least

There's a reason Mee is 19 points behind Schar, even though he has two more attacking returns so far: 5 clean sheets vs 11. No contest, imo

I don’t like those moves, to be honest. In particular, bringing in Kane and a City defender for a hit, on the basis of a DGW, when one of the games is City/Spurs makes little sense to me.

I may be doing the same apart from Salah is Fernandes. Could work out quite well but could easily backfire. That’s the risk. The question is would you be more annoyed with yourself if you don’t make the change and Kane/Rodrigo get a shed load of points or make the change and Salah/Darwin do the business? Generally speaking I get more annoyed if I make the change and it goes all wrong. Maybe that’s just me.

Although your 2nd player to lose is Greenwood so he is not likely to even be in your first 11 so no FOMO for him.

I already know how Mitoma performs at LW for De Zerbi. I know he's nailed there. I know he already has great stats

Mac Allister involves more faith. He *could* become awesome as a CAM. Tonight's haul might be a sign of great things to come

But I haven't seen a reason to ignore Mitoma at that price, so I'm going there as he unlocks quite the awesome 15-man squad for me

It could very easily be Odegaard vs Martinelli vs Saka again, and that argument still hasn't ended... Even as many people have gotten points from different combinations of Arsenal mids

Just the 'this is right, this is wrong, take that player out, so-and-so team are poor' etc is too dictatorial.

It's just my opinion unless it's a fact backed up by data (which I always try to present). I don't claim to be an expert

It's how we're taught to explain to patients so they can make the best decisions, but this forum is always open to counter points and I learn from others' opinions and info as well

I also try to make sure I say "I think", "imo", etc as often as I can. But sometimes it's too clear and I express that, but that's still just my opinion and I'm human

Stones and Akanji are nailed, yes. Even Laporte and Dias have been benched recently for them when fit

Stones has more attacking threat, so I'll go there if you don't need the 0.4 elsewhere

Castagne last chance saloon vs Forest, I think. The transfer target might be clearer by GW21. Maybe his opponent Estupinan with a DGW

Might hurt real bad if this is the reason you sell him before a haul. Burning a FT can help with a tied score at the end of the season, so it's not the worst option if you can't find an upgrade

On the other hand hesitating a couple of weeks ago meant I ended up 0.1M short of getting Shaw - so I got Castagne instead and missed a 15 point haul...

Okay, these look like two rather different situations:

In the previous one, going early could have paid off because you knew exactly who you wanted to buy and why. So the risk was with something happening to Shaw in training

Now, the risk is that you could sell a hauler (good fixture, nailed, usually attacking) without knowing who you want to buy because none is clear enough to you this GW

Might be better to treat them as different situations, I think

Mostly I'm looking at possible dgw players over the the short term but yeah haven't researched the best options due to fixture uncertainty. If ManU get dgw then Dalot remains affordable assuming he resumes at right back. Of course there was a reason for choosing Castagne but Leicester haven't looked good post World Cup.

Thanks, looks like Castagne may still be best option.

Could be the differential that makes your GW, in a tough week for the template. But I agree on getting rid in GW21

You're teetering close to what I'd consider a WC situation, but I think you can avoid that with hits. GW20 doesn't look good for hits, so let's see..

Cancelo's gone as an asset with Pep's recent treatments, while Romero keeps conceding (Palace had 19 shots in that CS match, and Spurs were dead until the second half again)

Maybe one more roll of the Romero dice, but Cancelo to Schar/Stones/Akanji/Botman looks good

To be fair I have no idea why anybody would buy Pope when you can buy into Newcastle defence with Botman for £0.8m less who was mentioned a lot.

If you wanted both Chelsea (for their double) and Newcastle defensive cover it was cheaper to go Kepa + Botman than Pope + any other Chelsea defender.

I won't start at the very start. Dinosaur guy, that's your part. Quite a lot to fill in, to be fair, sorry.

Anyway, football became codified in some time in the late 19th century, which by the way to idiots means it starts with an 18. Come on. Well they invented loads and loads of stuff during that particular period.

I'm on about the industrial revolution and so forth.

Football as such had been going on for yonks (in a basic way) but anyway, yadda yadda, first 'Football League' was 1892-93, or the one before, or near

Then football carried on, there were a couple of conflicts – pretty big – during which many, many people died from all over the world

When Bennerman drinks, the beavers pause for a moment chewing the bark, then raise their eyebrows cutely before getting on with the chewing.
