The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

might be just the way to confirm lots of green arrows though.
high ticket players arent producing, so why spend the money on em?
ONly Haaland is returning, maybe Kane, certainly not the defenders.
Enjoy the cheap and effective roster

Just watched the Liverpool v Wolves game. Is anyone else baffled by the general perception of Allison? Even before today, he has made a string of individual errors over the last 3 years, possibly more than any other keeper? Todays performance was up there with that Barthez performance (2003?) as the worst i have ever seen. But he is Brazilian so the next game, commentators will still refer to him as one of the best in the world. Am i missing something?

      Yeah, you're missing something.

Top of my head, I'd imagine Pickford, Lloris, DeGea being worse for errors leading to goals. You're welcome to come up with a source factually backing up your claim, though.

But, it's not always that black and white with goalies. At the higher levels, you don't just need good shot-stoppers (which Allison is good at). You also need quick, accurate distribution. And the willingness/confidence to do it. Allison often starts LFC attacks/counters.

The problem with being tasked to do that, means the more passes you attempt, the more chance for errors. Which stand out like a sore thumb, for keepers.

He has had dips in form, like all players do. As a GK, he's the most affected when the rest of the team isn't playing well (like now). He's also bailed out the team a lot and has had a massive part in turning LFC from being a bit of a joke (Karius), into title winners.

Early thoughts of DGW20 brought me quick questions?

    Cancelo - Trippier - Botman - White - Bueno
    KDB - Salah - Martinelli - Rashford - Andreas
    Haaland - Darwin - Greenwood

Q1 : Given current Liverpool form, having both Salah & Darwin seems too much. Who would you sell first?

Q2 : 2 FT. Which combo would you consider better if all DGW20 & 21 confirmed?

    A : Cancelo + Darwin + Andreas -> R.Lewis + Kane + Mitoma / March
    B : Cancelo + Darwin + Andreas -> Dalot + Kane + Summerville
    C : Cancelo + Salah + Greenwood -> Stones + Odegaard + Kane
    D : Cancelo + Salah + Greenwood -> R.Lewis + Saka + Kane

I think the notion of Kepa as some kind of save point merchant is based too heavily on a few crappy team performances where he had to bail them out (e.g. Villa). I really think he might end up with below average save points & a decent but not great number of CS. Raya is hitting 5-6 saves every game, getting 3-4pts without a CS & 9-10pts with.

      1. Miguel Sanchez
        • 9 Years

Yeah I hear all this… but Kepa usually get enough easy shots from distance to get the first save point and then his distribution is usually enough to push him up the BPS if he does keep a CS.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to who I think will keep more clean sheets between now and the end of the season. If Potter can organise Chelsea to keep it tight against City again I would have a bit more faith going down the Kepa route.

My faith in GKs is dead now. I plan to spend most of my transfers there to bounce around DGWs and BB23, then choose a good long-term option to replace Ederson in GW26

The hope is that things would be clearer by then, such as Kepa having a bigger sample size to justify his PPM rank

If you're buying now as set-and-forget, I agree with The Mentaculus (again). Raya simply almost never truly blanks. Same last season too

Nice, appreciate your feedback… you’ve really been putting in the hours recently. Hats off to you.

I’m actually looking at setting up a BB22 and TC23 but think the BB is riskier as it would be 2 GWs after a WC this week so anything could happen.

I’ll have the City cup game and Fulham game next week to give Kepa a slightly bigger sample size. All I know is that with how GK’s are performing I don’t wanna spend more than 8.6m on the positions.

Considering BB23 and TC29/34/37 myself, with FH in any good DGW where I don't have enough of the best assets, or if a massive BGW catches me out

May I ask why you're going BB22 over BB23? Personally not a fan of the Spurs vs City game, while Arsenal vs Man City in GW23 is the only tough game for the template but is somewhat covered by good doubles for both of those top sides

It’s just how the bench falls for me in 22 vs 23

GW22 = Ward (avl), Schär (WHU), Mitoma (BOU), Martial (CPA)/Toney (SOT)

Also, the longer I leave the BB after the WC the harder it could be to play without injuries, suspensions, rests becoming an issue

I had the quite the delve into GK stats just before the restart, and Chelsea actually have one of the highest ratios of shots conceded inside the box : outside the box, currently 130 : 62. Brentford's is the lowest at 165 : 125. That's a lot of low quality chances saved. And their total big chances conceded is still lower than Chelsea (34 v 37)

Been thinking about Haaland TC. The fixtures arent great but is there any guarantee City will get another double week. Also even if they do it seems likely it would come around the time when there will also be champions league games and fixture congestion casting a slight doubt on Haaland actually playing both games. You would think Haaland is nailed for this coming double and we know he is fit and not injured.

Yeah this is what im thinking. Also Haaland may well be injured by then. We know that right now he is fit and starting and an absolute lock to play both games with no champions league fixtures until Feb. They have the EFL QF but he could be rested for that and Alvarez could play.

Haaland is fit and will play both

My issue is with Man City themselves. This isn't the rip-roaring 3+ goals per match side of the Foden era. Pep has changed his approach since the Liverpool loss

I think Haaland will score, probably in both. That's why I'll cap him. But I want to see City back to blowing teams away, or at least fixtures which will be easy enough to blow them away (see the Leeds game, even with Pep's recent approach) before going TC

There are many better TC DGWs coming, imo. See the hot topic for more on that. Haaland might not be the highest-scoring nor only valid TC candidate this season. Long DGW season ahead, with multiple candidates from high-flying teams

If Haaland is fit, I just dont see how you can possibly consider using the TC on any other player. The stats and goals speak for themselves.

All-season long, yes. But something's changed in Pep's approach since he dropped Foden. Heck, it seems to be *why* he dropped Foden. Have you noticed this too? Haaland's chance volume has dropped. He's still elite, but they're going for more control of the game than trying to score 6

I think Pep can change that yet again. And, as I said, I think they'll still get high volumes in the easier games, which should happen in one or two better City DGWs later this season

Akanji and Stones are nailed. Pep only dropped him in a wild lineup experiment which he admitted to be a mistake in an interview and commended Akanji for improving things when he came on at halftime

Laporte and Dias have been benched recently for this pair when fit

It's Pep and he can easily change things before I finish typing this, but that's the data we have available atm

I think Patterson to Schar/Akanji (bench but don't sell White) is easy enough here, with 2 FTs to handle DGW21 et al. Cucurella vs Palace isn't a priority sale, and White should be good long-term

Honestly I'd just avoid until next season, see if he can get a solid run of appearances without injury and pick up his form once again, can't be easy for him. If you're just asking this as a question regarding impact on Cucurella, I doubt he'll really have much of an affect on him for a fair few weeks at least, can't see him starting a game any time soon

See whether City v Chelsea doesn't end in a draw first and how City look. I have KDB but tbh if Liverpool get a DGW in GW21 I think I'd rather have Salah. Liverpool don't look great by any means but I expect Brighton will be a goalfest (think he has a good record against them too) and whenever Liverpool score he's normally involved, City just don't look right to me at the minute, feels like Pep is significantly favouring a defensive approach

Cheers mate I appreciate it, all good now for the most part, think finally getting covid a couple of months ago has just sent me on a slightly unlucky run but hopefully that's the end of it. I'm guessing we'll know in the next week but I'm not entirely sure to be honest what the criteria for it happening is, but here's one of Ben Crellin's posts on it: https://mobile.twitter.com/BenCrellin/status/1608647769899827204

Says there's an 85% chance that Liverpool double in GW21 or GW26, but that any DGW21 fixtures should be announced before the GW20 deadline (Brighton, Everton and Arsenal also could get a double in GW21 too).

Morning all, 2 FT and 0.5 ITB. After Kane and Mitoma's displays yesterday and Newcastle conceding two I'm wondering if B is the best option?

    A - Patterson > Botman and roll 1 FT
    B - Salah & Greenwood > Kane + Mitoma
    C - Salah & Mitro > Kane & Saka

    Kepa
    Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
    Salah - KDB - Martinelli - Rash - Almiron
    Haaland - Mitro

    Ward - Walker - Greenwood - Patterson

No need to worry about Newastle B team conceding. Assuming Man Utd get a DGW, you can easily wait another week to add a 2nd Newcastle defender though. Probably most upside to B

Felix interest from Arsenal and ManUtd is definitely concrete but fees are putting both clubs off seemingly. Athletico want €15m fee and €6m wages covered for just 6 month loan (and the season is over in under 5 months). Don't think it's worth it for either club at that personally but if they think it could be enough to launch them towards the title (Arsenal) or guarantee top 4 (ManUtd) then maybe they'll put it on the table

Would be a decent, cheap, low risk temporary move

Moving out Kane from my team back in GW12 has not really worked, Salah and KDB not returning as I expected so thinking that getting Kane back in now should be a priority. Will wait and see on the double but think I'll want him back anyway... so best forwards 6.4m and under? Need to create some funds!

It's Ferguson, imo. Ignore the price, it's him. 0.1m more and Nketiah is a good shout

Gnonto is another option, but I don't think he's better than Ferguson atm. Could be wrong

Yep another good option, I'm leaning more towards Ferguson but Gnonto could be explosive...if Ings can stay fir then that could be a potential as he's most likely on pens when he's on the pitch.

I don't think the problem with Ings is fitness. I think Emery just prefers Bailey's pressing in that role. Not sure though, but it's easy to just have Ferguson and watch what happens with the others

It'll be interesting to see, Ings puts chances away which Bailey can't seem to do at the moment but long term Emery will want a new forward that does both. Will most likely end up with Ferguson, even with the trickier first 2 fixtures he will probably get a hattrick vs Liverpool!

With the way we're defending, I'm rushing to Mitoma over here

Villa could provide some great assets soon, as Emery has shown clear improvements. Let's see how it goes 🙂

Yeah that's a good shout, he looks like he'll play most games the form he's in. I had Nketiah GW 17 and 18, he did OK but I sold last week and now priced out... but may be able to get him in after the double as I'll be downgrading KDB to an Arsenal mid.

Mitro to Toney or save FT?
(assuming Toney is declared fit and not banned of course)

Easy roll for me. Mitro's 6 games after Newcastle aren't exactly tough defences, and I think there'll be better uses of 2 FTs for GW21 after all the doubles become clear

Don't think Toney's fit. Wasn't on the bench and nothing from Frank.
