The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

THE ATTACK

Looking into the Member stats, I'm not sure FUL is a good defensive fixture for Newcastle. Especially with Mitrovic returning from suspension with the wind in their sails. Maybe a United defender keeping it right against City (+ maybe another fixture) is a better punt this week. Thoughts?

Agreed, even if ManUtd don't double I'm actually tempted to play Dalot against City, City lacking fluidity and looking like they're focusing on defence first of late and ManUtd are playing well and in a good place. Fulham isn't a good fixture defensively for any team, they're always going to only play one way and when Mitrovic is there they'll always be a big threat. He also may feel he has a point to make against Newcastle

Chelsea, Leicester, Leeds and Arsenal as their recent scalps

They're elite this season. They're somehow even better now with Bruno G fit

I won't worry much about the opponent's stats there, because the other top defences face good attacks as well. Mitrovic is still an easier opponent than Haaland, Kane or Rashford atm

No doubt. But you can flip it too and look whose CS Fulham have sullied - Arsenal, Newcastle, City... literally everyone except Wolves & Everton. I wouldn't be surprised by a shut-out, but equally I think there's enough uncertainty there to use the depth of your squad (if you have it) to avoid this matchup for your Newcastle CB & Fulham attackers

Understood. I'm heavily swayed by Schar's goal threat vs the leaky Fulham defence, so that swung it for me. I find both choices completely valid and reasonable

Along the same lines... despite their formidable defensive record, I still don't really like playing double defence v Fulham. Thinking of Schär but it can wait a week - also get to bypass the suspension risk this way

        * as I'll be putting in Kane and my alternative would be having an Arsenal defender which is counter intuitive.

    Appreciate comments.
Why would Spurs vs Citeh be a provisional rearranged fixture when United vs Palace or Leeds was not put in the PL plans?
My best guess is the Citeh/Spurs game is a game with teams still in Europe. Palace and Leeds are not. This allows more possibilities for rearranged fixtures if ManU do not progress against Barcelona. However, ManU have progressed in the FA Cup now; if they went out there was even more reason not to move these fixtures forward.
Am I making any sense? Is it now highly likely ManU will have a DGW soon, even at short notice? The League cup can still affect the decision though.

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

Here's what I think: if City vs Spurs goes ahead, there were only ever two possible clubs involved: City and Spurs. There's no better time to play that game either

If Man U gets a double, there are three possible clubs involved, with only two of these clubs (Man U and Palace/Leeds) getting a rescheduled game on short notice... Or none at all, because there might be better times

It's a lot easier to tell two clubs to prepare ahead for a likely fixture than to tell three clubs to prepare for an unlikely one. A lot more complicated that way. So they're waiting to know which second club will be involved, if any

      1. Eze Really?

Cheers for that. I do think 2 teams in the cups and in Europe playing against each other is a wise call. The Pl could gamble on united going out of Europe.

      2. Ze_Austin

To further illustrate the complexity: Man U vs Palace would be at Crystal Palace's stadium, while Man U vs Leeds would be at Old Trafford. It's a bit bonkers to prepare two different stadiums (tickets, security plans, etc) for only one possible match

Today's games look like a slow burn which finally explodes into Man City vs Chelsea, AC Milan vs Roma and Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona at the end

If we're talking xGI then the gap is narrowing, with White's xA (nearly) catching up with Gabriel's xG. But Gabriel is the much bigger goal threat, true.

If you can cover Schär's possible GW20 YC suspension with someone from your bench, then I think White + Schär can bring more points

They're all nailed and it's very marginal, but Schär's league-leading goal threat sways it for me

I also like the fact that White attacks more than The Botman does, assuming Schär and Gabriel are the main "attackers" in each option

      B.

White's attacking threat (xA) and BPS accrual has been steadily rising. Does get subbed early at times, but that can be an advantage too... unless it's 59 mins lol.

Schar has more threat than Botman too (he's ranked #1 for Threat metric for defenders on FPL). Both similar on BPS accrual. Yes Schar is on 4 YC but if you ignore that, and it's also wipes soon... That's the combo I'd have.

    Morning all.

    Kepa
    Cancelo Trippier Shaw
    KDB Rashford Martinelli Almiron
    Haaland Darwin Mitrovic
    Ward // Andreas White Bueno

Darwin > Kane planned (FT). Anything else better?

Shaw currently in XI over White due to possible DGW (and if I'm buying Kane, I'm betting on Kane to score really.)

Not overly sure on the bench order & if Mitro worth benching (due to NEW defence more than anything, although I know FUL can score). Kepa/Ward a decision too but probably stick with Kepa. Palace form is bad & Forest getter at home?

Makes sense to me, but something sticks out like a sore thumb over the Darwin to Kane move

Darwin will start in a likely open match vs Brighton

Cancelo is unlikely to start in either DGW fixture, and City can concede in both. Isn't he a higher priority sale?

Darwin's issue is that he doesn't get as many points as he *could*, even though he still gets points. It's frustrating but it's actually still points

Cancelo isn't starting. That feels like a bigger problem to me

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years

I think Darwin to Kane could still be on the cards, but for GW21 as Kane faces Fulham while Darwin faces Chelsea (possibly twice) then

I actually didn't know Liverpool might get a DGW soon so thanks for that.

As a Chelsea supporter I would loathe to hope Darwin scores against us. Pleasently surprised how we handled Haaland last match - Liverpool/Chelsea games have either been 0-0s or fairly open of late.

Conversely would argue Kane can score against anyone too.

If you are suggesting a Cancelo sale, who's your option? I don't like a lot of the replacements this week. Someone like Stones is possible, but City may concede in both matches anyway.

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years
            2 years, 11 months ago

            Agreed on all counts

It's a risk management thing, with replacing Cancelo

White, Trippier and Schär had bad fixtures last GW, yet came away with good points. This is why I've bitten the bullet by finally doubling on Newcastle's defence. Even if they blank now, they've got good fixtures ahead. The main thing going for City is that they still have good defensive numbers, so it's possible to get more than 4 points from their nailed starters in the double... And 3/4 points are better than Cancelo's 0 to 2

Darwin vs Kane: I feel Kane can easily outscore Darwin, but I'm not quite as certain of a Darwin blank vs Brighton as I am that Cancelo's out of the team for now

Are you confident Cancelo doesn't play?

He started the last game and has been a mainstay for Pep.

Feels like taking him out could easily backfire.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 11 months ago

There's a lot that's happened since the last time Cancelo was a mainstay for Pep:

Dropped for Dalot in the World Cup. His team still crashed out of the World Cup

Dropped for three games in a row by Pep (including the Liverpool Cup game)

When he did come back into the team, he was deployed as a winger in a wild lineup experiment by Pep. He was then subbed off at halftime and replaced by Lewis and Ake, the two full-backs Pep has trusted recently. Pep could have subbed other players off and pushed Cancelo and Walker to full-back, but he took them off instead and brought a young full-back and a CB as replacements

Post-match is where Cancelo then was truly buried as an FPL asset, as Pep described starting him in that position as a mistake and apologised, but said nothing about why he didn't keep Cancelo on as a full-back. He has also given quotes about some players not being in the right mental state and not looking happy enough to play. He's also gushed over Lewis as the reason the whole team improved in that Chelsea game

This is why I'm so confident that Cancelo won't play that I'd even suggest a transfer request to him. Once Pep does this to anyone, it's hard to get back in

Looking to ditch either Martial or Darwin this gameweek. Who would you drop?

Imo, Martial has looked as culpable at missing chances as Darwin has. He's getting less chances than Darwin but has been two games.

Darwin on the other hand is Darwin, he's just scored in the FA Cup, will the floodgates now open?

    1. Hazz

Depends who you're selling for. See what happens with the DGW as Martial may get two fixtures - but remember he's likely also to get subbed early in both.

The Weghorst rumours also mean they'll actually have a 'proper' option to sub on to (soon, not immediately).

DGWs aside I'd sell Martial first. I did in fact sell Martial for Mitrovic last week, when I could have held & kept Darwin.

    2. Art Vandelay
      • 15 Years
      2 years, 11 months ago

In isolation, I would drop Martial (I think not selling Darwin could be a nice differential). I also think the Brighton game could be a goalfest.

Having said that it is always hard to sell a player if they have a DGW.

I’d still probably sell Martial though.

    3. GC123

As tempting as it is to consider selling both, there’s an argument for retaining both. Nunez took his goal well yesterday and could now go on a roll. Martial scored I think 11 points in the 6-3 defeat at City. I was considering Nunez & Martial to Kane & Ferguson but I’m now having second thoughts as I have £7m + of Cancelo earning me diddly squat points! He might be my priority to move on

Looking for the top option here. Current team is below. 1.0 itb.

    A. Upgrade Kepa > Pope (GW20)
    B. Upgrade Bueno (5th defender) > Botman (GW20) + KDB > Salah (GW21)
    C. roll the free transfer to keep options open

    Kepa/ Ward
    Trips/ White / Shaw / Walker / Bueno
    KDB / Martinelli / Rash / Odegaard / Almiron
    Haaland / Kane / Mitro

Hey all, what would you change? 2FT's/0.7ITB
Don't know about the Salah/KdB combo anymore..

    Ward, Kepa
    Gabriel, Trippier, Bueno, Shaw, James*
    Martinelli, Salah, KdB, Almiron, Rashford
    Mitro, Haaland, Greenwood

James to Schär/Stones/Akanji and roll, for me here. The injured player has to go first

Address KDB vs Salah in GW21. A lot may have changed by then

One of them will probably go to Mitoma/Mac Allister to fund Greenwood to Kane vs Fulham (not that high a priority with 4 YCs and two tough games)

This will then bring you close to a nice BB23, with Ward and Bueno on the chopping block

    Which -4?

    A) Sterling+Darwin to Kdb+Kane
    Or
    B) Sterling+Martial to Saka/Ode+Kane

B would be Ars double up with Martinelli.

To be honest, B. Even if KDB may pay off this week, pull) you'll be wanting a 2nd ARS mid very soon. Maybe lean more towards a Odegaard than Saka (£) as all three scoring similarly, but two are cheaper. No right or wrong answer tbh.

Note: If you're wanting Salah soon (instead of Darwin), A makes more sense - but yeah, ARS DGWs soon too.

Fwiw, I'll take Mitoma or Mac Allister now, then get the second Arsenal mid after that Casemiro game is out of the way. Brighton's blitz attack has Leicester + Bournemouth/Palace as a possible DGW21, after facing a full-strength Liverpool that just conceded twice to Wolves, the league's lowest scorers

Martinelli's there already, so I like the idea of tapping into another high-flying attack for now. I think your 8th attacker can become Odegaard in GW21 or 22

Do you think Mitoma is a strong pick if you are looking for a Brighton midfielder or you prefer Trossard/MacAllister/March?

Doubling up Mitoma with MacAllister but I've been decided on MacAllister for a while, just been waiting for him to settle back in after the WC. Mitoma just looks too good to ignore to me, the questions over Trossard right now also add to his appeal

Non-starter goes first, imo. Foden to a Brighton mid. Mitoma is my preference, but there are many options. I'd then address Mount in GW21, because he faces Palace now if he's recovered from the knock

Robbo might actually be a priority sale now that we've lost VVD, but maybe keep him for the open game coming up. If you decide to sell him, then it's Schar for me, as you have only Trippier for Newcastle's next 4 fixtures. If you don't fancy the double-up or fear Mitro, then Stones/Akanji/Lewis could be good

Botman is about as nailed as you can get.

Lewis looking like a mainstay in the first team.

I'd go Lewis as a punt, but be willing to move him on in a couple of weeks if needed as walker and cancelo get more minutes...

      Overall then;
Botman if you want guaranteed minutes and decent points
Lewis if you want a cheap, differential who is likely to get minutes in the short term
      Doherty has horrendous fixtures

I like Rico Lewis and think he’s gonna be a fixture for Pep. Liked great when he came off the bench against Chelsea and changed the dynamic for them. Also, has a good chance of BPS if/when he is involved in a clean sheet due to the sheer number of progressive passes he makes.

If utd and city double in 20

    What’s better

1 Cucurella Vs Palace will prob get dropped for chillwell
    2 Dalot have Shaw -4
3 Stone two tough fixtures -4

    ???

      • 7 Years

When unsure, I prefer keeping a fit defender with a good fixture to taking a hit

Also, I don't think Chilwell is ready yet. Might need to be eased in after a hamstring injury anyway. Cucurella's threat is Lewis Hall, but I'm not sure it'll happen immediately

I guess we're about to find out how similar Potter is to De Zerbi. Because if this was De Zerbi, I'd now consider Lewis Hall nailed. Takes no prisoners

I have 1.0 ITB. Any suggested changes to this squad?

    GK: Raya, Ward.
DEF: Gabriel, Trippier, Castagne, Schar, The Botman.
MID: Salah, Odegaard, Rashford, Mitoma, Mahrez.
    FWD: Haaland, Nunez, Mitrovic.

    Current thoughts:
    - Recently replaced Almiron with Mitoma. Almiron's underlying stats suggest his goalscoring output isn't sustainable, and assuming the goals dry up he is unlikely to rack up many assist points either - his xA is underwhelming. Mitoma's underlying stats look promising enough to suggest he can maintain his current form for a while yet. Had considered Gross also from the Brighton midfield, but I've noticed since Mitoma has been starting games that Gross' xGI has decreased a little - possibly playing a slightly deeper role to accommodate Mitoma.
    - Raya may not get many clean sheets, but is averaging a high amount of saves per game compared to others.
    - Mahrez may seem like an odd choice considering Pep Roulette, but underlying stats and recent impact have been very good. Foden, by contrast, just isn't delivering in the final third lately, in terms of both actual assists and xA.
    - Nunez... just a matter of time! 🙂

I'd probably replace either Schar or Botman as triple Newcastle defence is excessive especially if you want one of their attackers back. And going without Kane will be risky. Your call though

Thank you, yes good point about the triple Newcastle defence. I'm considering replacing either Schar or Botman with White perhaps.

Yeah, Kane is one of the tougher decisions. I'm nervous about replacing Nunez as his underlying stats indicate a haul anytime soon. Could downgrade Mahrez for a cheap MID and replace Mitro with Kane possibly?
