The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

THE ATTACK

Ait-Nouri picked up an injury against Liverpool yesterday. Not sure how serious, but it could result in an extended run of games for Bueno. Shaw's in good form and is evidently a Ten Hag favourite, but City next. Wolves at home to a toothless West Ham, so maybe Bueno for the next GW.

It would be a risky decision to back against Shaw considering his ownership and form despite the bad fixture. Bueno decent shot at a CS (if he makes it to 60 mins) but not sure its worth the risk.

    Hi all.
Kane is worth a lot of money that could be spread elsewhere.
do you think he is really worth having in your team for the next 4 game weeks, even if they have a double game week.
    cheers.

He's been ticking over really well all season in a team that's been pretty poor. Spurs still have Bentancur and Richarlison to come back into the side too which should help. The other premiums aren't really performing right now and Kane is fixture-proof so yeah I think he's worth it

Not for me, don't think City will have lots of clean sheets in their next few games (ManUtd, Spurs x2, Arsenal and Villa are in there, even Wolves look decent at the minute). Sounded like Gakpo looked off the pace yesterday and Firmino close to a return too so he might be eased in

      1. ☈☾
        • 8 Years

Firmino doesn't play in Gakpo's position though.. Nunez does but I don't think he's good enough v/s Gakpo on the left

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 5 Years

Firmino could free up Nunez to play on the left, probably unlikely but it's an option Klopp might utilise given the injuries to Jota/Diaz if he has a chance to try it. Regardless I don't really know if I see Gakpo starting every week, Ox and Carvalho are there too

      I'll likely be 3-5-2:

      KDB Mitoma Mac Rashford/Almiron Saka
      Haaland Kane

Mitrovic benched this week then figure out the rest next week

I haven't seen loads post about it but MacAllister has been set in stone for me for a few weeks, de Zerbi said after the WC that he'd ask him if he preferred playing deeper or if he wanted to play higher up the pitch like he did for Argentina. MacAllister didn't say himself what he felt but he admitted both his father and de Zerbi felt higher up was better so looks like he's taking the 10 role. Add into that free kicks and penalties and Brighton's crazy goalscoring of late and he's a dead set for me. Mitoma just looks like such a good player and has been playing so well in that role on the left.

Funnily enough I have seen more mentions of MacAllister since yesterday, when I said the other day that I wanted to bring these two in if I wildcarded, someone told me they'd want to wildcard them back out. I'm likely not WCing but still bringing in both

Was playing in a deeper role which relied almost exclusively on pens/FKs for goal attempts. Now given more attacking license as Nate describes. So we're kind of assuming those numbers are about to shift

I'm not going to promise you that any of them starts both matches in the DGW, because Pep is capable of random rotation. Still, this has been the preferred lineup since the restart, and Pep returned to it at halftime vs Chelsea because it was a "mistake" to shake things up:

              Lewis Stones Akanji Ake

That's all the data I have for now

Who will the top scoring MIDs be rest of season (in order)? I'll go:
    1) KDB
    2) Salah
    3) Odegaard

I don't know, and I don't feel I need to. Too many factors and at least 18 FTs between now and then

I just need the best for the next few games, and I don't consider KDB and Salah to be in the top 2. Especially not KDB until his form returns

Class is permanent. Form is FPL

See Son and Bruno Fernandes for recent examples

Appreciate that. I kinda do need to make a call as i'm drafting today. I'll go with KDB.

Who do you consider the top 2 out of interest?

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years

I'd wait for the DGW landscape before locking that in, because there's a possible Salah DGW21. If the DGW is swaying you towards KDB, that is

My top 2 depends on the number of fixtures we're counting:

Next 4 would be Mitoma and Almiron for me

Post-GW21 would be any combination of Arsenal mids and Rashford. Beyond that is too far for me

            • 7 Years

To be clear: this doesn't mean I'll drop the premium mid spot, especially if you still have Haaland and Kane. I'm just ranking based on stats, form, recent team performances/playstle and fixtures

DGW potential in February with some interesting FA Cup ties 27-30 January.

Shame about that draw from an FPL perspective.

We'll have fewer blanks and people won't be wasting their FH on trying to predict Wolves or Villa players returning.

Easy draw for lots of big teams - so this means more blanks no??

More blanks = waste of using FH in BGW

The two best teams in the country will likely play eachother, one being knocked out.

It's likely to be a BGW with Arsenal, Chelsea & Newcastle all having games ON, not much of a blank!

Looks like I won't need a WC for the GW28 DGW

Looks like a DGW20 for United.

Ben Crelling: The only day that Palace vs Man Utd can move to is January 18th

Context: "... So I don't see a reason why they'd wait to announce it (if it's going to happen)"

There's still the possibility of not bringing it to GW20 because of the limited prep time for fans et al. I think the announcement will come soon though
