The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

THE ATTACK

Dunno if you got it previous page mate but I am now severely tempted to WC. I realise not could be a bit rubbish down the line, but thinking I’d have the main culprits everyone would want for the doubles anyway, or at least be easy to get to them with few FT’s and some hits.
Team feels like it needs an overhaul especially at the back in defence.

What's the current squad? There are ways to get there with FTs and a hit or two, depending on who you've got

      2. Ze_Austin

It'll be really staggered though, and involve a lot of perfect timing

I understand the WC temptation and I'll say go for it if there's a promise of major rank gains

Yeh can totally understand that, just the squad I’ve managed to put together if I chose to do it is stellar.

          Team right now though is.

          Ward
          Trippier - Cancelo - Cucurella
          Martinelli - Salah - Rashford - Almiron
          Kane - Haaland - Mitro
          ________________________________
          Iversen: Andreas: Patterson: B.Williams

Feel I could be edit so much of an overhaul outside the strikers.

Why would you WC that? Madness.

Save FT and then remove Cancelo, Cucurella and Patterson for -4.

I know it is a bit mad aint it, but the WC is alluring.

I only have one FT so those moves would be for a -8. Definitely want Schar and maybe an Ars defender/utd defender

The only emergency here is Cancelo, so I'd spend the first FT on Cancelo to Stones/Akanji/Lewis, probably in that order of risk

Patterson goes for Schar next, but he can be delayed by 1 GW because you'll have 3 GW20 starters at the back. That lets you bench Cucurella vs Liverpool

Ward vs Forest isn't an urgent sale, but Iverson should become a DGW keeper or Raya

Cucurella to Shaw in GW22. Williams to Arsenal in GW23

Andreas to Mitoma is a luxury move because you've got a good attack

So there can be a transfer plan, or just delay the WC by one more GW and lose Cancelo

Ederson is the only fully nailed City def.

When Dias and Laporte are back and fully fit, not even Stones, Akanji will be guaranteed.
Pep rotates CBs a fair bit.

I didn't know ITV had secured rights to air LaLiga games. Looks like it's 10 games per season. LaLiga tapping into the UK TV rights revenue stream then.

The four-mium is looking pretty decent atm. Rotate bench players depending on fixture.

    Kepa

    Shaw Trippier Lewis

    Salah KDB Rashford Martinelli Summerville

    Kane Haaland

    Subs: Ward, Ferguson Mings Bueno

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

I think you might get more points from losing KDB and getting better defenders to rotate based on fixtures and DGWs, with only one super-cheap attacker needed

      1. CrouchDown
        • 13 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

Tbh I think I would be happy enough playing one of Summerville or Ferguson each week. I think Ferguson in particular could be the real deal.

In terms of defenders, I don’t really see any better defenders than the 3 above right now?

It's going to take a while to explain, but there's a reason I keep pushing this back 5:

          Trippier Schar Shaw City Arsenal

I spend a lot of time on https://www.livefpl.net/myteam/ as my hobby, and the rotation is perfect

You can still only play 3 of them. You never gain much from rotation

And not having to play Summerville every week. Going KDB (or Salah) to a mid priced mid lets the whole team look so much better.

Man U has some serious free kick weapons in Eriksen, Bruno and Rashford

We might see their main header target end up in the template at some point. No idea who that is now, though. Could have been Maguire, but yeah... Nah

Rashford is overrated as a direct free kick taker. Like Ronaldo he uses that technique of kicking it with the middle of the foot on the valve and like Ronaldo the majority of them hit the wall or go over. It looks amazing when they do score so people think they are great free kick takers but their stats are distinctly average.

Bruno took one against Villa, skied it, then Ronaldo was on them after that. From what I remember anyway.

Bruno took another after that away to Arsenal and also missed it.

I know? We're talking about who took penalties when Ronaldo was on the pitch.

Rash with 1G 2A here, and Man U didn't look all that great

      Scary

      Rashford on pens now?

He didn't win this one yet he took it, with Bruno on the pitch

Could have been a momentum thing, but we can assume Rash is on pens until we get some more evidence

Maybe as it’s the FA cup and not prem.

It looked by the reaction that Bruno allowed him to take it

      Good read.

Mitoma's going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next seasons great player.

I wonder how Trossard can get back into this team, barring injury and rests

He went from being the scorer of all De Zerbi goals to... Well, bench. The craziest part is that he earned this cold shoulder with some poor performances, while Ferguson and Mitoma have flown past him in his two best positions

The decline was relatively swift, and caught many of us in FPL by surprise. Not as fast as Pep with Foden and Cancelo, but I didn't expect this to happen to a talisman

With Dr Zerbi, you earn the shirt. Lesson learnt

Maybe a new role behind the striker in De Zerbi's settled 4-2-3-1, but they've got good options there too

        Easy sell in FPL atm

He won't sign a new contract and has 6 months left on his current one. There is a lot of transfer speculation around him at the moment so I think that is why he is being benched.

Yeah he’s an easy sell for me. Wish I’d just ignored price and gone straight for Mitoma after the restart

      Kepa Ward
      Cancelo Trippier White Patterson Bueno
      KDB Martinelli Odegaard Rashford Almiron
      Haaland Kane Mitrovic

Any ideas here? Cancelo to Dalot, Shaw or Schar sound ok even though Cancelo has a double?

Got the exact funds to do Salah, Greenwood to Kane, Odegaard. Do I go move early and get it done or wait it out and hope no changes?
