The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

Rye whiskey in one and sweet vermouth in t’other, then a small vial of bitters in mine codpiece so I can make a Manhattan. The Manhattan is mine favourite cocktail and is perfect for sophisticated sly grogging!

Nah! As each GW passes, the possibilities for DGWs reduces and eventually, probably around GW28 or something, there will be one or two GWs, usually around 35, that stand out as DGW(s). We will have plenty of notice.

I would like to see FPL implement a rule change where you are only able to transfer out players who are flagged or players who haven't started a game for 2 games. Either that or cap ownership levels at 25%.

I just hate it when players in your team who arent hugely owned do really well but then everyone jumps on them and they become too highly owned to be of any benefit anymore.

Its happening right now with Shaw and Kane. Kane has been ticking along nicely for me all season being consistent without hitting big scores. Now all of a sudden he gets 16pts and everyone gets him. It really mugs me off.

FPL is a really boring game when everyone has the same players and you cant gain any satisfaction from your players scoring.

I do but that game can only be played on a very small scale in leagues of only 8 teams. First time playing it this year and im in a work league. However half the league stopped bothering doing transactions after about 10 weeks and have teams full of injured players so its become pointless

Do a 22 player draft at the start of the season. Write some code to auto select the top scoring players while keeping a valid formation.

Do a small redraft after Jan transfer window to pick up any players missed/new transfers.

I'm done with the game. It's a chore rather than something I enjoy. Picked my restart squad in about 5 mins on Boxing Day.

I'm trying to think of ways to freshen it up next year.

                        1) Play Fan Team (Bet365 version) as my sole format. No content creators have infiltrated the game yet and you can actually win something. May as well put my energy into that.

                        2) Play FPL under the name Mr Differential. Set a threshold (e.g. 10%) at the start of the season. All players must have less than that ownership. Any transfer you make must involve removing your highest owned player(s) and you can only transfer in players below the threshold.

                        3) Have a season off and see if it helps me fall back in love with FPL.

The point you make about content creators is very true. Sadly their spoon feeding of information to the masses so they don't have to work it out themselves has levelled the playing field and made it much harder to do well. They are poison.

Ive had 6 top 10k finishes but only 1 in the last 6 seasons. More people playing the game is partly the reason for that but I believe its mainly because of content creators.

Going against so-called experts actually makes it easier to succeed in the game, if you're good enough to cash in on differentials before they get popular.

FPL has basically become a 2-3 player game. You are hanging your hat on the only 2-3 players in your team who are low enough owned to be able to have any positive impact on your rank. Haaland and Trippier are a complete irrelevance and Rashford is going the same way.

Tbf, it was probably always that way even when you were getting top 10k finishes. No wall-to-wall content or EO stats means it wouldn't be so apparent.

I like the idea of trying something different if you're getting fed up with the usual game. Last season I didn't have any players from the ESL teams as I was disgusted with their behaviour in trying g to set up the breakaway league. I didn't do very well without Salah et al, but it was very satisfying beating the occasional team in a head to head league. And not worrying about price rises as I never spent my budget, focusing on the gems from the 'smaller' teams there was a lot to enjoy. Good luck on finding your own way!

They could trying giving a points weighting to players you've bought in early as differential ownership and give a few extra points for that, whereas as other FPL owners who get these players get standard points.

                          Kepa (CPL)

Cancelo (utd, TOT), Trippier (FUL), Cucarella (CPL)

Salah (bha) Bruno (MNC), Rashford (MNC), Almiron (FUL), Andreas (new)

                          Haaland, Darwin (bha)

Bench: White (tot), Dalot (MNC), Greenwood

                          0.7itb, 2FT

                          Issues:

                          - Cancelo
                          - Bruno
                          - No Kevin
                          - No Arsenal attacker
                          - Andreas/White are weak options this week
-Cucarella is terrible and could get benched

                          A. Salah > Kevin and roll FT for Arsenal assets next week

Any clear winner of Schar or Botman?

S has more attacking potential. Gets more YC. Pricier.

B is cheaper, doesnt get booked. Less xGI. Better baseline bones.

I think Botman. The much cited attacking threat that Schar possess has given him a grand total of two goals as a season max and it is usually just one goal. He has already scored a goal this season so I expect him to either not score anything else this season now or if he does, just one, as his history suggests.

Except of course in the season he got 4 goals and slightly ignoring the fact that he has only ever started 25 matches.

You could then calculate each time he has started 24 or more matches he has got 4 or more attacking returns.

Maths not my strong point but think this means 2 goals a season ceiling is close to 100% hokum even before taking into account top 4 Newcastle form.

Think you've got a bit mixed up. Liverpool play Brighton again in 20 - can't play em 3 times in a season. Pool's double would be with Chelsea. Leeds & Palace still have to avoid an FA Cup replay in order to double v Man Utd.

It could easily have been Stones rested for Rodri vs Chelsea. Pep wanted to try something new, and it failed so badly that he brought back his regular trusted pair of the season (Laporte and Dias have recently been benched often when fit) and said post-match that he made a mistake

Akanji and Stones are nailed. The only caveats are when Pep wants to give his usual KDB-style random rests, or wild lineup experiments like the Chelsea game

This, defenses to invest in at this point in sequential order:
                                  Newcastle
                                  Arsenal
                                  City
                                  United
                                  Brighton
                                  Villa
                                  Brentford

I wouldn't double up on any defense at this moment either.

It’s very up in the air right now - will obviously mould around any Double/Blank info we get. Currently:

                              Pope

                              Trippier / Shaw / Stones

                              Martinelli / Odegaard / KDB / Gakpo / Rashford

                              Haaland / Kane

                              ( Ward / Ferguson / White / Bueno )

Any thoughts in general very welcome!

This season we are wearing our failures as badges of honour! I for example scored -1 on mine bench boost, of which I am extremely proud. The truely shameful are those doing well!

Who do you think the top scoring MIDs are rest of season (in order)? I'll go:

                          2) Salah

I'm not taking Gunners or Rashford out while they're performing well. Andreas is the reliable bench fodder you need. Only selling Salah is debatable in my case.

At what points hit does a WC become more "worth it"?

I want to make maybe 5 changes = -16, so a WC is a possibility.

But these 5 changes include an extra 3 doublers (assuming these are confirmed), so just assuming these players play the additional game, that's down to -10.

Would you WC to cover a -10?

This is incredible from Pep about Lewis. He says he was "extraordinary, he changed the game for City when they were playing badly, and that he makes the rest of the team play better."

Is he a must at £3.9m? What's the worst that could happen at that price?

Fwiw, I don't think Scout promises to quote every interview. It'll be some even longer articles if they did, and some people skip reading the article to ask questions answered by it in that same article's comment section. They post summaries and talk about important bits. Pep's praise of Alvarez was covered, but maybe not all your expected exact words and quotes. That's fine

There's also the fact that it takes quite some time to watch every interview given, and not all are immediately available at the same time

We've got sources that focus on quotes, like https://twitter.com/ColmVHayes

Pretty sure the roundup here did include Pep gushing about how Lewis made everyone play better. A must? No. But starting to look like a real option. Worst case scenario? Cameos, I suppose

Gushing is definitely the right word to use.

                          MEMBERS ONLY HOT TOPIC

Newcastle are blowing all other teams out of the water for clean sheets (10) and with kind short term fixtures another defender to compliment Trippier sounds like a good idea.

But which one? Nearly 40% of Newcastle's shots are from set plays, which is just crazy.

Looking at their Defender stats in the table below then, Schar has almost 4 times the goal threat of the others, but is on 4 yellows and needs to navigate one more game without a booking to avoid a ban. However, his baseline bonus is poor, so maybe it is better to save a bit of cash and go Botman and hope for bonus in the narrow goal-to-nil wins?

                          What do you think?

I was having a look at some of these stats too. Thinking of bringing in Schär next GW, skipping Fulham (never a safe CS even for Newcastle at home) and the suspension risk. Botman is a nice option too if you can't spare the 0.6, but playing alongside Trippier he's much more likely to get just the 1 bonus pt most of the time I think

Good point about Trippier hogging a bonus points slot. I think I'm going to go for Schar. His goal threat is obscene for a defender with a shot every 65 minutes.

Yeah. Ridiculous goal-threat stats and some bad luck, all season long. At least we'll get clean sheets while he "blanks"

Good stuff, cheers. Feel like I’ve been sleeping on Schar’s stats. Even with the price and yellow cards, I think those numbers have swayed me - a big haul might just be around the corner

No Kulusevski, Richarlison or Moura. The only options in the currently fit senior squad would be to play Sessegnon and Perisic as wingers, but they've not played that role (well) for a while now

Blitz Portsmouth away, sub the front three off early. That's the sensible plan here

I'm surprised that Lampard still has this job

This doesn't look like a blip in the teething process of a long-term rebuild project, like with Arteta and ETH. This just looks bad and directionless

But the rot goes all the way to the top, so I guess they're having difficulties with finding replacements because every good manager should be aware of how badly managed this club is by now

Yeah. It's weird, my Palace mega-fan friend was very positive about him just before the Christmas restart. Not sure why he's randomly been dropped, when Mateta's not really been an option either - and Palace form has been so bad. Maybe this goal gives Viera a kick-start?

I went to check his fixtures and knew he was dead cheap (£5.2) but Palace have a disgustingly tricky fixture list until about GW29... so a it's a no-go for me.

Dont u think that FA Cup and/or Caraboa Cup win for Championship club should give them a direct ticket to PL promotion playoffs?

Simple reason is that they have proven that they are competative team and can compete with PL sides as well.

Yes, I know that cup winner gets ticket to play in Europe. Wigan was that side on 2013/14 season (lost the group with 5p).

Too complicated of a ruling to (and unlikely of an outcome) be worth instating.

The Championship side that would get booted out of playoffs after working hard for 46 matches definitely would not be happy.

Yea, thats true, but cup win would also be huge achievement (for championship side).

Interesting idea, but as the supporter of a Championship side got to say the unlikely scenario of a Cup win would be reward enough. No one is suggesting any such side needs an extra incentive. Actually the opposite was true, it was the top Prem sides that needed an incentive to take the Cups (especially EFL Cup) seriously.
