The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

THE ATTACK

Hoping it’s fake news. Isn’t he still officially a Burnley player on loan to Besiktas? Not sure how he could then be loaned to United??

He needs to find his level. Not good enough for Burnley so perhaps Man Utd is good fit?

Well Ten Hag did rejuvenate Haller. I’m taking hope that he can do the same with Weghorst.

Does offer something different to Martial

Not odd at all, odd that it's him maybe but we desperately need depth up front.

Mac Allister, Groß, March and Mitoma all seem to be hitting form. They're very cheap and decent options to consider, in my eyes potentially the dream 4th or 5th midfielder who can easily stay in your team for a long time. Brighton's schedule is kind until April and they will only play versus 3 clubs from the current top six in the next 10 matches.

Mitoma looks ideal 5th midfielder IMO. For the others, we need some clarity on Trossard situation. Something seems to be going on there.

None. Brighton players are a firm avoid for me. I'd pick the wrong one, get frustrated and swap, then the original one I picked would start hauling. So I think I'll just steer clear of the whole shebang thanks very much.

I think everybody in this thread has different combinations of Arsenal attackers. Do you think you picked the wrong Arsenal attacker?

Brighton is doing well as a team, and *very* well since GW14, with points spread around the attack. Just like when people realised Arsenal were the real deal early in the season, De Zerbi's Brighton attack has arrived

        1. Mr. O'Connell
          • 13 Years

Brighton burn me every time. Every season. Lost count of how many Dunk own goals, Trossard blanks and Groß 59 min subs I've had over the years.

But your comment is of course extremely valid.

I understand, but that's when you were going for talismans

This time, it's the whole team. Even if Mitoma blanks in the next 2, it'll be easy to keep him if him and the team are still attacking a lot. Just like when an Arsenal attacker blanks twice this season

It's not a "Zaha is on a good run again" kind of situation anymore

Are any of them a better prospect than the template of
, , Almiron, Rashy, Andreas though?
Of those, only the premium slot is serially underachieving, but it really doesn't feel right not having one, and possibly Andreas, which would likely mean benching the Albion points each week irrespective of which you choose.
I'd also throw a Leeds midfielder into the mix.......

I think they're all better than Andreas. Fwiw, Brighton's attack has outscored the rest of the league since GW14, Mitoma's first start. If you ignore their price, it becomes a question of whether those options from *other* teams are better on current form. I know this sounds like a wild argument, but check the data. The closest thing in recent memory to this sudden surge of cheap attackers from one team bamboozling the league (not just when they had good fixtures) is Leicester, and even Leicester had two main talismans. Bielsa's Leeds could be contenders for that recent role in FPL too. It's happened more often in defence instead

I have no problem with benching points. It's better than not having at all, as they can form a nice rotation or come in if something happens to a starter

          Reckon switch to playing 3-5-2 regularly;
Downgrade either Walker or Cucu to Lewis @ 3.9, and lose one of Darwin or Mitro to cheap FWD to get Kane.

Sort out your non-starter. Walker to Akanji

Other moves should be clearer by GW21

No transfers until after GW20 pressers, of course

Kulu to Mitoma would be high on my list, to fund Darwin to Kane vs Fulham and a later Bueno upgrade to Shaw in GW22

Just touching on the comments above re FPL content providers:

    1. I have zero problem with Twitter/YouTubers who gave up their day job to take a gamble. One man bands who have a tremendous work ethic to put bread on the table and to pay their bills. All credit to them, and good luck to them.

    2. I've had a serious problem with this site for a long time. I cancelled my membership after 12 years because nobody higher up the foodchain listens, nobody. Despite however many members' surveys. Nobody listens. Some pundits are now Pro Pundits. Fulltime employees (on a wage) talking rubbish. The same rubbish they talked for free.

    3. As for the New Personalized Team Review Service; how low can Fantasy Football Scout sink? (And why is it Americanised with a 'z'?)

    4. As Ze_Austin said, it's all available for free in the comments section. You just have to make the effort to sort the wheat from the chaff.

The PTRS is just another low in the downward journey of this site. Everything appears to be focused on revenue maximization and the welter of betting based stuff is, frankly, disgraceful. The articles are, mostly, generic reporting with quantity prioritised over quantity and memories of the regular articles of the past, like the Pre-amble, are just a distant reminder of how far this place has fallen.

I’m still here though - I don’t do social media and until something else comes along for like minded folk to chat about FPL then I shall remain here.

Don't think that he is being bought to go into the starting 11 although he might have to if Martial's injury record continues. He's a good squad player to have as he offers something different as we saw with the Dutch at the WC. I wouldn't judge him too much on playing for a Seán Dyche led Burnley who were struggling for survival.

    Deserved defeat.

Sitters from Wood, Anderson and Murphy. Ritchie honorable mention for blazing one over from 18yds too.

Reality is our B team is nowhere near those around us in the Premier League. It will come with time.

It's probably a blessing in disguise. Keeps us on our toes, but also allows us to focus on the League Cup and the League. We have an amazing opportunity for a monumental top 4 finish and we can't really afford injuries to key players so the extra games aren't welcomed. And we haven't had a better opportunity to win the a cup in years.

    Onwards and upwards, HWTL

Our B team is still a relegation sides B team. Will take a fair few windows to clean it out! Just have to hope we're lucky with injuries over the next 12-24months

I think there must be some pretty strong correlation with Lascelles playing and the result.

Newcastle recruitment has been quality over quantity (and it's working pretty well so far). Imagine it will continue that way, so it's gonna take some time to completely get rid of the deadwood (see what I did there!).
