Double Gameweek 20 is just around the corner and the pre-match press conferences have begun to take place on Thursday.

As usual, we’ll be bringing you all the key quotes that you need for your Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams over the coming 24 hours.

Five Premier League bosses took questions today, while Graham Potter will face the media after Chelsea’s evening match against Fulham; the Gameweek 20 section of that presser will be embargoed until the following day.

A total of 14 other managers will face reporters on Friday, one of whom will be Jurgen Klopp: rumours are circulating on Thursday about a possible injury to Darwin Nunez, who wasn’t spotted in recent training ground images, so the Liverpool boss will hopefully bring us up to speed on that.

“Liverpool are not specifying the nature of the injury at this stage, but insist it is only ‘minor’ and have not ruled the 23-year-old out yet.” – The Daily Telegraph on Darwin’s injury

“The Uruguay striker has been absent for a number of days with an unspecified issue and, while the indications are that the problem is not overly serious, his participation at the Amex Stadium on Saturday is in jeopardy.” – The Times on Darwin’s injury

KEY UPDATES FROM THURSDAY

LEICESTER CITY

James Maddison (knee) and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (glute) remain sidelined alongside Boubakary Soumare (hamstring), James Justin (Achilles), Ryan Bertrand (knee), Ricardo Pereira (Achilles) and Jonny Evans (calf), while Ayoze Perez (knock) will have to be assessed after he picked up an injury in the midweek cup defeat to Newcastle United.

Dennis Praet (rib/hip/abdomen) is back in training, at least, and could return.

“[Maddison] is progressing well but he won’t be available for the game. No [timeframe]. Still with the medical team.

“[Dewsbury-Hall] is not back yet. He won’t be training tomorrow, so it’ll be sometime next week.

“[Praet] is back in training with the squad and that was his first day this morning, so he looked fine. We’ll see how he is later after the session and how he feels, but it’s good to have him back.

“Ayoze, we’ll just have to keep an eye on after game the other night, so we’ll see where he’s at tomorrow.” – Brendan Rodgers

LEEDS UNITED

Stuart Dallas (knee), Archie Gray (ankle) and Luis Sinisterra (foot) are still unavailable and Crysencio Summerville has now joined them on the sidelines, with an ankle problem set to keep him out for a month.

Patrick Bamford (hip/groin) is available again, however, while Adam Forshaw (hip) was anticipated to be back in training this week after a minor procedure in the New Year.

“Patrick is back in training and will be in the squad, so that’s really good news. Luis is getting closer and closer but not quite ready, and then Stuart and Archie. The only other update is that Cry Summerville is out for a month, probably.

“We’re a little disappointed that Cry will be out. He’s hopeful that it will be quicker than a month but that’s what the prognosis is right now.” – Jesse Marsch

ASTON VILLA

Diego Carlos (Achilles) will remain out for another month or two, while this game will also come too soon for John McGinn as he battles his way back from a hamstring injury.

Matty Cash is a fresh doubt with a knock picked up in the ‘cupset’ against Stevenage, while Leander Dendoncker is suspended following his red card in that match.

There was no word on Ludwig Augustinsson, who was taken off in that cup tie, although he now looks surplus to requirements anyway following the arrival of left-back Alex Moreno.

“McGinn is out. Diego Carlos is getting better but it will be a month or two before he is with us. Jed Steer is starting to train with us in one or two weeks.

“Cash is a doubt for tomorrow, and Álex Moreno, his transfer is coming today, we’re waiting for it. Maybe he will be in the squad. Dendoncker is also suspended after his red card on Sunday.” – Unai Emery

NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Nottingham Forest were in action barely 12 hours before Steve Cooper delivered his pre-Gameweek 20 press conference, so the latest updates from the Forest boss were far from concrete.

Willy Boly (ankle) limped out of the cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers after initially hopping off a stretcher to rejoin the action, while Taiwo Awoniyi (muscle fatigue) and Neco Williams (facial injury) missed the game altogether.

Cooper had previously said he was hopeful of having Awoniyi back for this one.

“We’ve got an injury record that we’re not particularly fond of at the moment, and that may have been added to last night. We haven’t assessed the players yet, because they are in a little bit later, so there’s no news of absolute guarantees of player availability from last night.

“Fingers crossed on a couple of things. The last thing we want is more numbers on that list than what we already have.” – Steve Cooper

Omar Richards (leg), Giulian Biancone (ACL), Moussa Niakhate (hamstring), Cheikhou Kouyate (hamstring), and Jesse Lingard (hamstring) remain out.

SOUTHAMPTON

Stuart Armstrong (groin), Armel Bella-Kotchap (knee), Juan Larios (muscle) and Tino Livramento (knee) are still absent but Alex McCarthy (ankle) and Theo Walcott (calf) could return this weekend.

New signing Charly Alcaraz may also feature.

“Alex and Theo are much closer, so we’ve got a big decision to make with those. Armel is a timescale of 7-10 days, and we won’t rush him because of the trickiness, not the gravity, but the trickiness of the injury. And it’s the same with one or two others who are out.

“Stu had a problem with his groin that we have to get to the bottom of. He’s been playing with pain so it was the right decision to take him out, one for his own psyche and two, for the fact he wasn’t contributing what we would like for us.

“[Alcaraz] should be [available]. We’re just waiting on visas and stuff like that, but hopefully he is.”- Nathan Jones

  1. Are early transfers worth the risk?

As someone who's made early transfers almost every GW for multiple seasons, I think I can comfortably say this was one of the worst possible weeks for early transfers in a long, long time:

    - Too many matches between the GW deadlines: injuries and red cards
    - Unclear DGW and BGW climate, to be decided by said intermediate matches
    - The transfer window just opened
    - Pep
    - There are cheaper alternatives for almost all possible transfers this season, so that price swing is really unlikely to count

The warnings were there. Sometimes we get lucky, but now the punishment is (almost inevitably) piling up

There's usually a risk vs reward balance, especially in most seasons where budget really matters

This season, it really doesn't. Lewis at 3.9 is outscoring Cancelo at 7.2, Mitoma at 4.9 and Mahrez at 7.5 on much better form than KDB at 12.5, and it goes on

It just looked like risk vs more risk

There's always an alternative transfer that pops up later in the week

Really struggle to see the upside in early transfers. There’ll be the odd occasion when you have exact cash for a player you really want but that’s the only time I’d consider it

            • 7 Years

I think that's the only time most of us consider it, as that's what I assume is happening when we do it

Stuff like rage transfers or reacting to a bad GW or unexpected hat trick are purely emotion-based, imo

The reward of having a team you'd otherwise have been unable to afford can then be weighed against the risk of that player or someone else being injured, especially when you don't see good alternatives available or it's early in the season so TV building and template forming are in progress

TV is overrated. Every single season there’s cheaper alternatives who appear

TV matters most if all key premium players are all on form.

Agree but it's harder to pick the right cheaper alternatives to the premiums, because there are so many other options and only a handful of premiums

Totally agree with your points here.
I knew the risk but I made early transfers for the first time this season.
Fortunately for me I have Martinelli on the bench if Darwin is out. wouldn't have done early transfers if I didn't have a decent bench.

I always wait until the day of the deadline to make moves now, having been for early, knee-jerk moves years ago.

Its made basically no difference to my ranks. Yes, I avoid the injuries and what have you that pile up after an early move sometimes but equally, I now miss out on price rises all the time.

If I'd made early moves this year, the likelihood is I'd be able to get to Kane from Darwin for free this week. As it stands, I am 0.2 short.

      Just swings and roundabouts init.

As I led with in my post, I'm an advocate for early transfers. Always risk vs reward, especially over the course of a season. The risks in this particular GW were just unusually high

        1. MJF
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 3 months ago

Do you think the risks do pay off across a season, though?

I am not sure whether things tend to just balance out, overall.

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 3 months ago

I considered this a long, long while back. I checked the data available at the time and concluded that the injury/suspension risk is overplayed by the community. So I opted for the early transfers upside, but only when the rewards outweigh the risks (to me)

Yet, to answer that question: I don't know. You'd need data from multiple management styles over multiple seasons

My idea is to go for it when you can look back and say "The risk was worth it", but only in those cases

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 7 Years
              3 years, 3 months ago

Also note, on the management style part: I'm a transfer-heavy manager. If I don't make that transfer early, I'll still make it after team news. It's just the way I enjoy the game

But it's not really affected me often, as I haven't had much experience with injuries or suspensions, with some few but spectacular experiences (statistically insignificant, but emotionally massive). Maybe I've been lucky or just okay at weighing the risks, but my experience with playing this way over the past few years in multiple fantasy games still suggests that the risks are overplayed by the community

It's just... This was a bad, bad week for the risks

They'll always feel worth it until the first time you get burned.

      Then you know the score!

I've been burnt a few times. They always feel horrible when they happen, but they still very rarely happen. Loss aversion makes the significance of one bad day overshadow the many good days. That's why I've accepted it as my strategy

        1. Sandy Ravage
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 3 months ago

100% agree with this. I've also made regrettable decisions at GW deadline and feels even worse when I've spent all week planning.

I plan my transfers 1or 2 weeks in advance and rarely change my mind over the GW. You have to be really unlucky to get an injury

If Darwin is ruled out I can get Kane in with one ft, would you also do -

    A Cancelo to Stones for a -4
    B Play Cancelo
    C Play White bench Cancelo
D Cancelo to any other defender -4 (already have Tripps, Shaw, White & Patterson)

I have Greenwood instead of Andreas so you have good bench cover. I want to get Odegaard for Mount next week so feel bit iffy with Cancelo but think he will have to wait. City games aren’t great and there defence hasn’t looked good so don’t think it is worth a -4 even if they have a double. Other option is Newcastle defender but if they concede you’ve lost points and they may blank GW25.

Chasing massively in league. With that in mind

    Darwin and Bruno to

    A) kane and eze
    B) son and martial

    Have 3 United currently.

    Haaland cap

Would keep Bruno this week if possible and downgrade elsewhere to get Kane. But out of those B is the better combination.

Might as well keep Bruno - massive differential which you’re after

Allright so Kane will be owned by everybody now. F that. I feel a YC card incoming for him. That is my only hope as well.

0.1 short of Cancelo > Shaw. Who is the next best option?

    A. Dalot / Martinez
    B. Doherty
    C. Lewis
    D. White (already have Ramsdale)
    E. Someone else

Guys I have 6 dgw players already. Do I be greedy and bring in Kane or chill?

    Guaita
    Shaw Cancelo Trippier
    Kdb Rashford Saka Almiron Martinelli
    Viking Darwin

    Ward Cucurella Neco Greenwood.

    Darwin to Kane
Cancelo to Lewis would be the moves.

It would be for a -4 but I am thinking hopefully tye dgw big hitters can make up for it.

    Kepa
    Trippier, Gabriel, Shaw
    KDB, Rashford, Martinelli, Almiron

    A) Kepa & Patterson -> Ederson & Schar/Doherty
    B) Almiron & Patterson -> Mahrez & Botman/Doherty
    C) Mitrovic & Patterson -> Toney & Schar/Doherty
    D) Patterson -> Akanji/Ake
    E Kepa -> Ederson

In CAPS the changes between my 2 formulas. Any thoughts? boils down to wanting kane or mahrez!

    Option 1: -4pt, 6 DGWers
    Kepa
    Shaw* - Trippier - SCHAR - DOHERTY*
    Kdb* - Almiron - Rashford*
    Haaland* - KANE* - Nunez

Bench: Odegaard - Andreas - White

    Or

    Option 2: 0pt, 6 DGWers
    Kepa
    Shaw* - Trippier - DOHERTY*
    Kdb* - Almiron - Rashford* - MAHREZ*
    Haaland* - Mitro - Nunez

Bench: Odegaard - Patterson - White

Note - Doherty could become Dalot if fit.

Pretty glad my planned FT this week was Darwin to Kane anyway.

Downside is tons will sell for Kane now too (at least in my private league); upside is they'd have to have done it for a hit anyway.

Sadly most of us have Cancelo he's such an obvious fall-guy to make up the pennies for them (that probably pays off a bit) & I'll be scuppered into that move too!

Dithered between having Shaw instead of Cancelo, but was too scared.

James' injury made getting Shaw easy the next week but oh to have not had Cancelo at all! Would have been nice.
