Ahead of Manchester City v Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser discusses whether meetings between two big sides should stop being labelled as ‘tough’ for attackers.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

A couple of weeks ago, when Zophar and I had our fellow Pro Pundit Pras on the FPL Wire podcast, we were discussing fixtures for a few teams and a thought came to my mind. The subconscious wiring in our head says that two big teams facing each other is a tough fixture for all but then, if we think about it, some of this season’s biggest results have occurred here:

  • Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United
  • Manchester City 4-2 Tottenham Hotspur
  • Manchester City 4-1 Liverpool
  • Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal
  • Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United
  • Arsenal 3-2 Manchester United

These big games often see goals. We have more idealistic managers in our league than ever before. No longer do we have the likes of Jose Mourinho being pragmatic in a big game, sucking the life out of it – although I do love those games of chess, this is just me building a narrative!

We now have managers like Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, Jurgen Klopp, Erik ten Hag and Roberto De Zerbi. More often than not, when teams managed by these gentlemen meet each other, it won’t be a bus-parking exercise.

The gloves are off and we’re talking prime Rocky Balboa versus Apollo Creed, where both teams are taking punch after punch. Theoretically, it makes sense to me. You’d think that all these elite attackers, though not getting as much control, definitely get more space in games like these and therefore they should be perceived as a good fixture for them.

For defenders, it’s different. Obviously, if the gloves (and robes) are off, we’ll see teams concede six and seven goals. Maybe our fixture ticker needs re-adjusting to this too.

EXPECTED GOALS IN BIG GAMES

Anyway, enough idealistic gobbledygook. It’s time to test if there’s any proof in the pudding. What better place to start than this season’s best two teams ahead of their midweek showdown at the Etihad Stadium?

          you too.

          Raya (DDG)
          TAA,Trippier, Botman (Henry, Zouma)
          Salah, Mitoma, Rashford, Grealish, Martinelli
          Haaland, Watkins (Edouard)

          Already did a -4.

Raya or DDG, Probably go Raya as Kane always score, and Chelsea rarely do

Fantastic team mate!!!! I would have gone for Grealish this week but was 0.1 short so went Rashford instead, Oooh that’s a tough one, I’d go for Raya too, probably the better chance of the Clean sheet too and will make plenty of saves

Will probably be a -8 next week Watkins- Jota, Martinelli to March and a Man City defender (probably Stones, but can be Dias, (I think Both were rested in the FA Cup), could be Dunk for nailedness, but i need to punt lol

Haven’t really thought about that mate, had Mings since he was 4.3, Mitoma at 5.0, got Watkins early at 7.3, Kepa at 4.5, actually lost 0.2 on Kane, only got Haaland back at 12.1 last night

Was it Barnsley? I had an encylopedia of British football bought for me at 7 in 1979, and read it for years. Was it played at the Crystal Palace? Just guessing without looking up.

You mean who won the FA Cup in 1912 mate?? Yes it was Barnsley, funnily enough it was April 24th when we won it!!! Was at Brammal Lane and beat WBA in a reply, first match was at Palace on April 20th!! Great knowledge mate very impressive!!

Nice one. I always remember Bury winning it 6-0 and thinking thats and odd core and team.

Crystal Palace themselves were involved in the first FACup and its formation.

It was really the Crystal Palace Company and they owned the Cricket Ground for Kent and then the London Cricket Club.

The football team could play there after 1875 as it was cutting up the cricket pitch (It was a game for the rich back then at first to keep fit in the winter). But as it was an amateur team owned by the company it never folded, but played the odd away game (Like any Wanderers team did, like Bolton or Wolves as they never had a ground to play on, so played all their games as the visitors).

In 1905 the old Aston Villa Chairman came down and made Crystal Palace professional, for the first time as Kent allowed proffessionalism for the first time. Thats why Woolwich Arsenal moved to north London, as North London clubs could be prefessional but Kent and then Surrey FA were the last to let it go. So Chelsea got the spot over Palace in the football league div 2 in 1905.

That is why the club is seeking that the team was actually created in 1861 and not 1905, making it older than Notts County lol.

Anyway a boring bit of history for you 🙂

lol, i enjoy how our great game was great.

AC Milan was formed by the English and Inter Milan were the local and Italian foreigners. But AC Milan was again really a cricket team.

Cricket plays preferred football to rugby

Its hard to say when football matched cricket in popularity, probably when you guys one the FA Cup!! 🙂

Great team, id say D) keep the transfer as next congestion might have a few forced transfers and extra cash might be needed.

Mitoma was very unlucky not to score on Sunday and these opponents aren't as good

I was considering this before you posted. I think I'll make the switch. Also gonna start Steele over Raya. I figure if he starts a CS is more likely.

I do think Bruno is due though
