And just like that, I find myself writing the last article of the season.

NOT AN ENJOYABLE SEASON?

FPL Gameweek 36 early Scout Picks: Brighton + Newcastle triple-ups

I’ll be honest. Just because of how the season has fallen after Gameweek 28, it has probably been one of the least enjoyable campaigns of Fantasy Football that I’ve played. And it has nothing to do with how I’m doing in Fantasy Premier League (sitting at 99k at the moment). Anyone I’ve spoken to, and this includes people that are having a very good season, is finding it a little bit like a chore because the schedule and FPL are gaming us, rather than vice-versa.

There are many things that have happened that make this season less memorable, in my opinion. The fact that we all had an extra Wildcard in all but name made 2022/23 fairly ‘easy’ on paper, with three overhaul periods leading to 80% of our players being similar in the second half of the season. The schedule after Gameweek 26 had a lot of doubles and because of this, the player pool was incredibly limited and we FPL managers consistently felt shackled when making our picks. There was just no scope for creativity or applying our minds too much because you were simply playing the schedule.

That said, it still is a game we all love and I will be eagerly awaiting next season with a big appetite. All things considered, we should be back to the good old days with a normal schedule and no Double Gameweek overdose in the second half of the campaign. In fact, in the last two to three weeks, I’ve enjoyed talking about next season more than I have contemplating the moves for this one, despite clocking a captaincy haul from Callum Wilson (£7.2m) in Gameweek 36.

PLAYING FOR FUN

FPL notes: Haaland haul, Ake rested + Solanke or Kane for Free Hit? 1

I wonder if there are any learnings from FPL this season?

From an individual point of view, in the last ten weeks of 2022/23, I’ve been reminded that I enjoy the game the most when I play for ‘fun’. I hope I will not stop myself from going for some picks next season due to reasons like staying with the pack. I think I now have the temperament to deal with extreme variance and have learned to detach from it emotionally. Having being shackled for a while, I think I do value just playing my own game, something that gives me joy. I think if there’s enough thought and research behind ‘playing your own game’ and a reasonable amount of not going too crazy, we should be okay. Right?

Having a permanent captaincy option like Erling Haaland (£12.4m) does help as you’re not really going to take extreme risks anyway because it would take a lot to bet against him for the armband. Maybe once I look back at the season, there might be a few more learnings but at the moment, our moves have been so dictated by the post-Christmas schedule that it is difficult for me to look past the ‘fun’ element.

My fellow Pro Pundit and pod partner Zophar made a good point when he said that people are so affected emotionally by the output of one or two players in their teams because they are the only players whose points actually matter, due to the template being so consistent and strong.

GAMEWEEK 38: SON TO SHINE?

Learning from 'The Great and The Good' FPL managers 4

FPL managers will be moving into punt territory in the final Gameweek of the season with everything except the relegation race and UEFA Europa Conference league position all but decided. I’ll just throw one gamble in there that I kind of fancy, someone who will be difficult to get to for most people involved. Despite the electric atmosphere that will be expected at Elland Road, I’ve got a feeling about Son Heung-min (£11.5m). Harry Kane (£11.4m) has been dropping a little deeper of late and I expect Tottenham Hotspur to get a fair amount of joy on the counter as Leeds United need to go for three points to have hope for survival. Son posted an expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 0.7 in the previous game against Brentford and I do think he has the explosiveness to go big.

Why not go Kane instead? Well, there is nothing wrong with it but we’re all ‘vibes’ in the final week of the season and I just have a feeling about Son. What I noticed about Leeds was that their heads were dropping after the game against West Ham United and I don’t know if the reverse psychology attempt from Big Sam will pay dividends.

In case you’re looking for punts elsewhere, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Liverpool are the places to go, in my opinion.

A THANK YOU

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit

That is it from me this week. I just want to take a minute to congratulate Neale, Tom and the editorial team at Fantasy Football Scout for doing an incredible job this season. The content has gone up a couple of notches and I’m not just praising the team because I write for the website. For as long as I’ve played FPL seriously, I make it a point to try to read everything written on this site. It has been my practice for the longest time and I genuinely believe just covering that arms you with all the ammunition you need to make your decisions. I would also like to thank Chris, Geoff and the editorial team for making writing so much fun as I’m genuinely given a free hand to write about whatever I fancy and unlike the second half of this FPL season, that has been truly liberating.

Also the last and the biggest ‘thank you’ goes to all of you reading what we type. I always have and always will be grateful for your support. Here’s to next season being ‘back to the good old days’.

Good luck with the final roll of the dice and if you fancy some more FPL content, we had a ‘vibes and laughs’-heavy final pod of the season which you can view below.

For those finding FPL a slog, I barely follow NFL and don't watch any, but I have really got into NFL fantasy in recent years, which works on a draft basis rather than an 'everyone can choose the same player' format.

Despite not knowing much about NFL I have come to find it so much more fun than FPL, and the player pool is large enough to make drafts for 8-12 managers genuinely viable, fun, competitive and exciting.

You would need to find 7-11 like-minded friends or maybe find a slot in an open public league, and learning about an entirely new sport and fantasy format is understandably off-putting for some, but when you get used to it it's a far superior game to FPL. The time you put into research can lead to picking up a player 'to own' that nobody else can then acquire (unless you choose) except via trades, and having dynasty and keeper leagues makes that ownership factor even stronger.

Despite being an FPL addict for many years, if I could only take one to a desert island it would be NFL fantasy. Might be worth a try for anyone who has become disillusioned or wants to try something different.

Has Mac10 played his last minutes for Brighton? Are they unlikely to risk a £70m transfer fee due to injury and therefore not play him at all in GW38? Any risk he gets a cameo to say goodbye?

It looks like he'll be in the squad but Klopp does like to give his players quite a bit of *full* training before a start. Sounds like he only just returned to full training on Thursday after some individual work earlier in the week? My guess would be substitute duty but it is just a complete guess!

This article contradicts itself. He highlights the importance of playing for fun "playing my own game, something that gives me joy".

But then immediately goes on about the importance of "Having a permanent captaincy option like Erling Haaland"

How is that fun? It's the total opposite. Picking a captain that wasn't Haaland and that guy scoring points was the only way to have fun this season. Nothing better than your non-template captain scoring well. Whereas knowing my captain is the same as 99% of the world is absolutely not fun. It's taking the fun out of it. No risk. Yawn. Why play the game if there isn't an element of jeopardy involved.

My mini-league have already agreed on a 'no Haaland captain' rule for next season. The reason....it makes it more fun. Which is the reason we play, surely.

Isn't the counter to that argument that if you choose to captain someone other than Haaland this season, the majority of the time you're likely to end up worse off and so that will be emotionally draining?

I actually prefer just getting the most points. like captaining Haaland this season gets you the most points. Buying the likes of Sterling and Antony doesn't sound like fun to me.

Often people have fun when they are doing well. Some have to do it their own way to have fun.

LT has always been someone who likes punts and chasing "upside" picks. I think that is what he's known for, and in a season where so people followed similar strategy and picks between GW26 and GW36, he's had limited room for manoeuvre or show his style of playing. Not impossible, but plenty of the FOMO players and differential punts didn't pay off during that time.

I disagree with the article above, I steer clear of the twtter fpl bubble moves and try to figure out alternatives. It has been fun trying to think of moves the 'experts' are missing. As they all end up going the same way by hook or by crook. Plus they all can't wait to tell everyone who they are picking. So it is very easy to think of alternatives as they are showing their hand.

There are always other alternatives, transfers and ways to play chips.

Looking at my chip order -

    WC - gw3
    BB - gw4
    TC - gw22
    FH - gw28
    WC - gw34

It went against what many people have done during the season.

Ironically over the whole season I have been very consistent as my OR rank and second chance league rank are very close. A lot of the moves I made were very close to coming off but I did not get the consistent massive green rises many got during this run in.
Still I found it enjoyable and it has made me think about the way I play fpl in future.
Basically, I think taking quick notes each gw watching games (for each team) and steering clear of stats should give me an edge on many who slavishly follow stats. Because as I seen this season the cold hard stats seem to make a fool of many.

One change I feel I need to make is to be less fixture leaning and make allowances to have a certain percentage of form players in the 15.

Hard to tell the Newcastle line up after Howe's comments. I'd expect Trippier to start, as Manquillo and Krahft are out. Targett might get a run out and that could mean a rest for Burn or a shift of Burn to centre back.

Interesting extra motivation for Salah to score this weekend:

"In a disappointing season Salah has still scored 30 goals and is only one away from becoming the first player in Premier League history to provide 20 goals and 10 assists in three seasons, which would surpass the record he shares with Thierry Henry.

He is one short of reaching 20 league goals in a season for the fifth time in six years at Liverpool (he scored 19 in the other) and if he manages to score at Southampton on Sunday he will become the first Liverpool player since Roger Hunt in 1965-66 to score 20 league goals for a third successive season."

I think this is a great idea, but unlikely to happen. Simply there is too much money available from gambling brands for football clubs to turn away completely from it plus their owner is involved with gambling as his business interests so would potentially be a bit hypocritical of him

With that in mind, comedy sponsorships?

20 points ahead in ML and they have Kane.

Bruno and Isak to Kane and Eze (-4) seem reasonable to counter any Kane haul?

If you could only have one of these this week who would it be?

    A) Odegaard
    B) Eze
    C) Saka
    D) Maddison

Personally I think Maddison as he is the one with something to play for

G2G? Anything worth a -4? Trying to protect a 10 and 15 point lead in two leagues.

    DDG
    Trippier - Botman - TAA
    Salah (c) - Mahrez - Mitoma - Eze - Rashford
    Haaland - Watkins

    Steele - Isak - Shaw - Zinchenko

    1. Sacrifice A) Mahrez or B) Mitoma to bring Eze in?

    2. Haaland to Kane

    3. 1 + 2 for -4

    Thanks in advance
