Alexander Isak (£10.5m) may not want to have anything to do with Newcastle United anymore – but what about Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers?

Cutting through the bleak mood engendered by their wantaway Swede, we assess whether the Magpies are still going to offer us Fantasy points potential in 2025/26.

This is part of our series of team previews in which we profile every Premier League club.

From best picks and defensive contributions (DC) magnets to fixture analysis and an early predicted XI, our latest offering to Members focuses on Eddie Howe’s troops.

NEWCASTLE: REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

TOP-FIVE FINISH, TOP-FIVE NUMBERS
Newcastle FPL

While you’d question whether Nottingham Forest can mount a top-five challenge as serious as last season’s (they were 15th for Statsbomb xG!), Newcastle’s underlying numbers were more in keeping with a side in the mix for Champions League qualification.

Only the top three scored more than the Magpies’ 68 goals, too.

They’ve hit at least that total – as well as reaching double figures for clean sheets – in each of the last three seasons, so they’re no flash in the pan.

HOWE’S MAGIC TOUCH

Auto Draft 93

Call it supporter bias but Newcastle really do have one of the better managers, certainly from a coaching perspective, in the league.

Plenty mocked the money spent on Anthony Gordon (£7.5m) before he signed, and look at the progress he made in 2023/24. Joelinton (£6.0m) has gone from laughing stock to lauded midfielder, Fabian Schar (£5.5m) from outcast under Steve Bruce to ball-playing centre-half.

This list goes on.

2024/25 was Jacob Murphy‘s (£6.5m) year, a best-ever campaign for attacking returns (21) after establishing himself on the right wing. This was a player surplus to requirements and loaned out to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday by Bruce.

The second season under Howe, as it was with Gordon, is often the breakout year. The integrations and method-learning take time. We’ve seen it again last season with Sandro Tonali (£5.5m), Tino Livramento (£5.0m) and Lewis Hall (£5.5m), all of whom had questions asked of them early on in their careers on Tyneside but who have delivered outstanding 2024/25 campaigns.

Many are questioning the fees paid for Anthony Elanga (£7.0m), Malick Thiaw (£5.0m) and, seemingly incoming, Jacob Ramsey (£5.5m). The sceptics did the same for Tonali and Gordon.

Howe has made virtually every single member of his squad a better player, and who would bet against him doing the same with the latest arrivals – in time.

NEWCASTLE: REASONS TO BE FEARFUL

So I seem to be off Baleba with the transfer seemingly quite imminent, don't really fancy Xhaka that much, and can't really see any other great 5.0 that I can rotate a bit. Should I scrape together 0.5 and get Anderson even though that means Forest triple up (all defence)?

Which GK to go with Sels? Right now I have Dubravka but looks like he’s not fit + not nailed? Who else should I pick?

I don't want to be stuck with Dubravka not playing for weeks and losing value so gone Perri and Petrovic for 9m Rotate home/ home for many weeks and Perri had more saves in Ligue 1 last season than any PL keeper and in 33 games

      1. Sir Michael Taker

Why do people think he'll lose value? Nobody is selling their 4.0 bench keeper other than on a wildcard whhich doesnt count

        1. The Pretender
          • 10 Years
          7 months, 24 days ago

You would be surprised how many casuals might sell a keeper, even for a hit, early on if they dont play. In saying that, I am happy with a 3.9 Dubravka sitting on my bench early anyway.

          1. Sir Michael Taker
            • 11 Years
            7 months, 24 days ago

Who are you selling him for? There are no playing 4.0 keepers

I'm not - but they might. People get spooked by price rises/drops, panic sets in and before you know it we have a bandwagon sell. It is a story as old as time.

Some of them might grab a 4.5, you never know mate. There are literally millions of casuals in this game.

    Salah Palmer Gakpo Rogers *****
    ****** ****** Guiu

    Best option here

    A Watkins Gyokeres Kudus
    B Saka JSL Bowen

Leaning towards A. But the FOMO on Saka is real. But can always get him in GW2 for Palmer if at all.

    Thoughts?

I think theres a stack of defenders at 5.5 who probably get more than Porro. I know that wasnt the question. I think Anderson and Caicedo probably do from mid. There'll be other less obvious ones too

I’m not sure any will tbh if you can rotate him out of city. Set pieces and he’s hitting defcon in some pre season games too

Maybe Baby Reijnders could do it

  10. Ady87
    • 12 Years
    7 months, 24 days ago

First draft, late to the party this season

    Sanchez (Dubravka)
    Frimpong Porro AWB Murillo (Konsa)
    Salah Mbuemo Sarr Kudus (Reijnders)
    J.Pedro Gyokeres (Fullkrug)

    1.5m ITB

Is it too early to have Gyokeres? Reijnders is cheap, I’m assuming he won’t pop up with a brace every other week but he’s getting buys after that recent performance?

    I could go Porro / Reijnders / Gyok > VDV / Marmoush / Watkins

Ideally I want some City and some Arsenal though. Thoughts?

    1. chilli con kone
      • 12 Years
      7 months, 24 days ago

Watkins is so much safer and flying in pre season. I personally will be going Watkins and reasses when arsenals run picks up

    2. chilli con kone
      • 12 Years
      7 months, 24 days ago

If no Haaland I would just go Reijnders for city and use the money. Marmoush is too expensive if he gets benched

    3. REMILAN
      • 10 Years
      7 months, 24 days ago

I think the risk of Gyok being benched or subbed off early along with the fixture run means you can wait before brining him in, same price as nailed Watkins with great fixtures

    4. The Pretender
      • 10 Years
      7 months, 24 days ago

You can probably afford a 4.0 DEF in place of one of the 4.5's. You don't really need more than one rotating 4.5 when you have 6.0, 5.5 and 5.5 starters. I would go Watkins over Gyokeres to start. Spend the rest in your midfield.

Murillo seems to have bucked the general profile on def cons in that normally it’s the lump CB that gets them…is that an anomaly that will revert to the mean this season??

If Milenkovic closes the def con gap then he’s the better pick

        1. The Pretender
          • 10 Years
          7 months, 24 days ago

Fair call this - and Milenkovic did close the gap 2nd half of last season. He did massively overperform xG, though. I like Murillo.

        2. Sir Michael Taker
          • 11 Years
          7 months, 24 days ago

Not sure where the lump bit comes from. Virgil is better than Konate on them. Saliba marginally better than Gabriel but both are bad. The only real pattern I've noticed that I dont think is random is the back 5s show a clear preference towards the central of the 3 cbs - Lacroix for example, Agbadou is another. I suspect the reason Murillo is better than Milenkovic is because Milenkovic is mainly good with his head not his feet and headers aren't counted.... yet, probably the next addition next season lol

Two dud forwards only works if you have 10 mids and defenders who can all be relied upon to pick up the slack.

I was on Haaland the whole time since the game launcher. Changed to Salah last week.

Comes down to strategy. I am on FH 3. So can have Haaland for that week. Also I have Arsenal picks in my draft. Arsenal play pool in GW3. So taking that fixture out for Arsenal suddenly makes them look good fixture wise.

Talking about Salah/Haaland. You'd want him for GW1,4,5. Haaland maybe for GW1 and GW3 certainly. And ofcourse after GW6. Salah> Haaland in GW6 on the cards for me.
On the contrary if I get Haaland over Salah initially it's tough to get back to Salah in GW4 and switch back to Haaland in GW6.

So basically having a strategy in mind makes you feel better about your picks

      BB in GW1

      Sels - Verbruggen
      Murillo-Wan Bissaka-Reinieldo-Hartman-Gudmundsson
      Salah-Palmer-Saka-Mitoma-Potts
      Fulkurg-Woods-Watkins

      Thoughts on this?

      Worry points:
      1- Reinieldo nailed on?
2- I can opt for Dubravka but im worried he wont start GW1

Bench and defense are too light in general

two fixed defenders in Murillo and Bissake and I keep rotating between the other 3
If Dubravka is nailed on I can get 1M free and upgrade Potts but nothing is clear yet

Not ground breaking but I'm starting to think there is more value in the 5-5.5 defs than mids. Anyone else considering a 442 over 352?

Every year we think that. I have been there before... Never worked out. But I see a case where you include a Pedro Porro in place of your 5th mid

Before you were relying on CS and G/A only which are obvs much harder to predict but with defcon added there should be more reliable source of points as well.

Have 2x5.5 and 2x4.5 (one 4) as don't think there's sufficient value in the 6s right now - but am going with 352

Yeah, I've a backline of Murillo Milenkovic Cucurella Lacroix and can switch between 352 and 442

Feels like I’m just about there now, currently on:

        Sanchez (Dubravka)
Cucu Neco Van de Ven (Diouf Gudmundson)
        Palmer Wirtz Gakpo Reijnders KDH
        Haaland (c) Watkins Evanilson

        A couple of alternatives:

        1. Sanchez & Evanilson to Kelleher/Verbruggen & JP (would probably BB with that as the whole team would have decent fixtures. I have concerns over JP’s minutes in the medium term but an easy transfer out to another 7.5 or Evanilson
        2. Wirtz or Gakpo to a 6.5 or below (Kudus, Rice maybe) and upgrade the defence. Porro or Frimpong perhaps. The midfield is already looking a bit light as it is, though, and I really like Gakpo as a differential
        3. Watkins to JP and upgrade the defence. Think Watkins could be a great differential, though, and easy to jump to Gyok when the time’s right

        Any thoughts?

          3. Watkins 23% owned overall and much much higher with engaged managers. Not really a differential
