World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 6, Day 2

Argentina progress to the World Cup Final after edging past Holland on spot-kicks. The South Americans face Germany on Sunday evening, whilst Louis Van Gaal’s men square up to hosts Brazil in the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday:

Romero the Spot-Kick Hero
After Germany and Brazil’s eight-goal feast on Tuesday evening, last night’s match failed to live up to Fantasy managers’ expectations. A cagey goalless draw after 120 minutes resulted in penalties but the Dutch were unable to replicate their weekend win over Costa Rica, as Argentina keeper Sergio Romero saved two spot-kicks to send his side into the final.

The result afforded the South Americans a fourth clean sheet in the last five fixtures, though only two defenders – Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay – have been ever-presents in Alejandro Sabella’s resilient side since the start of the tournament, with six appearances apiece. Argentina limited their opponents to a single shot on target over the entire 120 minutes and bearing in mind their struggles further up the pitch, many will be reliant on their backline to deliver the points against Joachim Low’s in-form attack.

In terms of personnel, Marcos Rojo returned to the starting line-up after serving a one-match suspension, whilst Enzo Perez replaced the injured Angel di Maria in midfield. Di Maria’s fitness could be key at the weekend, with Sabella’s side clearly struggling in the final third – Lionel Messi’s displays continue to frustrate Fantasy owners; he mustered just one shot across the entire 120 minutes and has now failed to find the net in each of his last three appearances.

Van Gaal’s Side Limp Out
Having swept their way through the group stages with a total of 10 goals, Fantasy investment in Holland’s key assets paid off handsomely in the opening few fixtures. As the tournament has progressed, though, Louis Van Gaal’s side have struggled to maintain that cutting edge and served up a second consecutive goalless draw last night.

Many Fantasy managers will still be holding a number of their options for the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday but bearing in mind both Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie have failed to score since Matchday 2, the Dutch boss must be tempted to freshen his attack up for the weekend clash against Brazil. The United man, in particular, turned in a shocking display and failed to register a single attempt before being replaced by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on 96 minutes – the Schalke man has yet to start a match but could well be handed the opportunity as the Dutch look to finish on a high against their demoralised hosts.

At the back, Van Gaal’s side have now shipped just a single goal in the last four fixtures and with Neymar still sidelined on Saturday, their chances of another shut-out certainly look strong. Fantasy favourite Daley Blind started as a left wing-back last night but a tactical tweak at the break saw him shift into the back-three, with the Ajax man unable to add to his tally of three assists for the tournament.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Ron Vlaar led the way for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with 12, whilst Stefan de Vrij (11), Daley Blind (seven), Wesley Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt (five apiece) were next in line. For Argentina, Martin Demichelis was top performer with 12, followed by Ezequiel Garay and Lucas Biglia (both nine), Marcos Rojo (six), Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Mascherano (five each).

This may very well be my last post on this great site so please forgive me for straying off topic a little.

If you are worried and confused about the state of the world regarding finance, war and instability; I implore you to research the works of Karen Hudes (World Bank lawyer & whisleblower) and come to your own conclusions. There is plenty on You Tube.

I personally would recommend "Where Did The Towers Go" ? and with the combination of your research with Karen Hudes I believe you will find the answers that you will need in the coming weeks.

Great stuff you have all been posting as usual.

    Good Luck.

        I'm afraid so.

In respect of the book above ( Where Did The Towers go ? ) I did not mean to associate that with Karen Hudes, that is a book written by Dr Judy Wood but to me both these individuals and acclaimed experts in their fields give you the whole horrifying picture.

        My apologies.

I'm thinking something like this to the last round

    Neuer x x
Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Hummels, Boateng, Demichelis, de Vrij, x
    Kroos, Lahm, Macherano, Biglia, x x x x
    Muller, Messi, x x x

    thoughts about it?

It depends on the Dutch lineup a bit but I don't think you need both Silva and Luiz in your team - it should be an open game and we know what Brazil's defence is like. Also, I'd definitely have Robben in over Messi.

i'm winning my mini league for 9 points, so i kindda need players that will give me for sure points lol.

the things is, i don't really trust the Dutch squad to score goals so i'm thinking Brazil might have a clean sheet.

in the midfield i'm waiting to see the Dutch players, if for example Clasie starts i might put the guy and take off Biglia, so i have some one from the first game in my line up in terms of midfield.

between Messi and Robben, well to be honest both of then are disappointing me, Messi haves the thing that from a moment to the other, scores some crazy goal.

I'm also against Messi. But I guess you could argue that if he's going to shine then the final needs to be the place to do it in. Personally I think the Germans will shut him down.

          Is this McD FF? Yes?
What I would do with your team is; remove messi and macherano and bring in Wijnaldum, Shurrle and Bernard. Alternatively remove Boateng and keep Macherano.

Bernard looked lively and dangerous in the Germany game. Shurrle might not start but if Bernard fails to make a splash then Shurrle is likely to see game time and this tournament has seen a lot of subs come on and score including Shurrle in at least two previous matches.

Apologies if mentioned, but Swansea have made a bid in excess of £5m for Watford striker Troy Deeney, Sky sources understand.

Wonder if they're preparing for the eventuality of Bony leaving

I thought the same thing, especially with Gomis on board. Unless Deeney is just going to be back up?

Danny Graham went to Boro permanently didn't he?

hmm well I'm not interested in Graham from an FPL perspective, but it would leave Swansea with a lot of strikers given they bought Emnnes as well

Key players, heard this trippier is meant to good for assists, will he get forward as much in prem and what's he like defensively?.
Also may consider ings if the price is right.

I would think he will have similar season to Shaw's first season in Prem...

But as a team, defensively, we will/could do what Palace did under Pulis

Key targets would be good, so some stats on last season, players role in the team. Remember that the Scouts wrote a preview of Burnley, so it would good to get a more in depth look. As a regular watcher you likely have more specialized knowledge of them so it would be nice to see where to look from an FPL perspective as I'd expect you to provide some decent budget options

So I'm guessing cillessen, luiz & hulk possibly won't play play off but what's peoles thoughts on Oscar, blind and de vrij? I'm obviously gonna wait for line ups but want a plan in mind (mac d) also do we get another transfer in sun game?

We don't get any more transfers, saturday and sunday is a single round.

Unless both Brazil and Netherlands decide that third place is below them and both decide to play unused players then I feel quite certain that Oscar, Blind and De Vrij should play. I've got them all on my team.

My line-up-release question is whether Bernard will play again cause I thought he was one of few players that looked dangerous in the Germany game. I also believe Brazil might give another striker a chance as Fred has not accomplished anything, so maybe Jõ will get to start which could be an interesting alternative.
