The Alternative Short-Term Defensive Rotation View

With so many spreadsheets and articles being penned concerning the merits of defensive rotation, I thought an alternative viewpoint was necessary.

Short-Term Rotation Explained

Currently we see a lot of focus on pairings that offer one of two options – either teams that, when matched up, always offer a home game such as Newcastle/Sunderland or one that offers viable rotations over a 20- or 38-Gameweek period with numerous attractive fixtures within that huge bulk of games.

I want to introduce a third option that offers a different lens through which to look at how your team is built. My focus is around the first nine Gameweeks only and involves pairing up defensive teams that have an “easier game” every single one of those Gameweeks.

It’s a short term view, which avoids the weaknesses inherent in the home game focus, such as with Newcastle/Sunderland, where you will get difficult home games where the chance of a cleanie is going to be very low. For example, Newcastle at home to Man City in Gameweek 1 or Sunderland at home to Man United in Gameweek 2.

A nine-week rotation plan also helps avoiding a key pitfall of a long-term or season-long rotation strategy, which is that it often falls apart at around the nine-week mark  as form changes or players get injured.

On that basis I’ve decided to focus on pairings that have a pretty decent first nine Gameweeks and go with them. So to cut to the chase, “what are the best options?” I hear you scream. If there are any others that fit the critiera then let me know, but what I have done is steered clear of teams with expensive defenders, so that what you see below is as bargain basement as I can find….

The Best Short Term Rotation Pairs

Stoke & Swansea – This sees nine very favourable home games in a row and is my favourite pairing. AVL, BUR, WBA, LEI, SOT, NEW, NEW, SWA, LEI

QPR & Southampton – Here we have eight attractive home games and one good away game. All nine covered. HUL, WBA, SUN, NEW, STO, QPR, whm, SUN, AVL

QPR & Stoke – All nine games are favourable, with seven of them at home. HUL, hul, SUN, LEI, STO, NEW, whm, SWA, AVL,

Newcastle & Stoke – With this rotation we have nine good games, with six of them at home. AVL, hul, CPL, LEI, HUL, NEW, swa, LEI, sot

Aston Villa & Stoke – Another one where nine games are good with six of them at home. AVL, NEW, HUL, LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA, qpr

Crystal Palace & QPR – This does have a dodgy Gameweek 8 fixture but it starts with six good home games, so is worth including. HUL, WHM, SUN, BUR, STO, LEI, hul, LIV, AVL

Love these rotation articles. Some good pairings there and good to see home and away take a back seat over fixtures.

    Great stuff

It all depends on how you view the Swansea and Stoke defences

I'm happy to take something like Palace and QPR as, if paired with say Cresswell or Trippier you can easily cover GW8

I'm a fan of short-term rotation for defenders. This game is so unpredictable.

    Let's hope Bardsley is 4.5m.

To be honest, after seeing the Stoke/Swansea rotation, I haven't gone any further. That's definitely the one for me.

Bardsley would be great at 4.5m, he gets forward a lot too!

Sounds like you're putting priority on getting the right defenders, over getting the right mids/forwards.

Personally I think I might be doable

                  DDG/Courtois

                  Cahill/Shaw. Trippier, Dann, Creswell, Bardsley

Need to check on the fixtures within that 4 way though

Love that defence, provided they'll cheap enough. They rotate well enough.

I'd go for cheap keepers myself though. Save points are what make keepers the best value players in the game. More funds, and hence, flexibility in midfield/attack as well.

I don;t mind these with keepers but a 2 way in defence essentially means you need either

    a) 2 pairs in order to get your 3 out

    b) one uber cheap filler who plays to cover any benching issues (The Kolarov principle)

You're assuming two big defenders then?

I don't like the idea of 3 players for 1 slot personally, sounds expensive.

Having one big defender, and 4 smaller to rotate over 2 slots gives a better price-to-slot balance in defence imo. More funds for up front as well.

Would be interesting to see some rotations involving more newly promoted sides.
Say if you pick for example SWA and STO rotation above, expectation is none of the starters would be below 5.0 in either team.
So that sets you back 10 or, most probably, 10.5
Question is if this would be better than say, taking the example of last season, Ivanovic (6.5) and Ward(4.0).
Me leaning towards the second option.
That's why I'm saying if you go rotation, then you should go uber cheap. 4.5 at max.

my problem with shorter term rotation is I don't want to be forced into a transfer or two on defenders when the rotation goes bad

however there are inevitably injuries and players get dropped or a team you rated for CS is very leaky at the back in which case if you have a free transfer you'll end up transferring that player out. and at least for me when that happens I usually pay attention to who the best value for money is as opposed to who else fits in a rotation. so the advantage of the short term rotation would be to try to get some early cs points before you have to make a change or two

So my first article appears from nowhere! Wasn't expecting that. Great to see all the feedback so far - thanks everyone for your insights. If I'm honest the main reason I'm going short term this season is when I look back over my previous seasons on FPL I've invariably used my wildcard early on so all the work in devising long term rotations was a waste of time. Couple that with the probability of injuries and suspensions longer term and a 9 week window makes more sense to me.

    Nice work mate.
But apart from QPR and probably SWA/AVL/NEW there will be no £4.0m priced defenders.
Stoke will be almost the same (£5.0m or higher) and Palace should step up to that same level.

For the first 6 weeks I will be looking at a United center back, Trippier and a cheap 3 way rotation.

I'm hoping to spread funds with 9mil for keepers, 22.5mil defence making sure 3/5 have a good fixture that week, expensive mids & attackers.

    4.5m / 4.5m

    4.5m / 4.5m / 4.5m 4.5m / 4.5m

    10m (fabregas) / 10m (sanchez) / 9m (mata) / 7.5m (Tadic) / 5.5m (Arnautovic)

    11m (sturridge) / 9m (bony) / 5m (gayle)

leaves 1.5m for bank or tweaking. I can smell goals, keep those backlines cheap!

not necessarily but getting no matter what. wally won't be ready until end of sept, Rambo/eriksen are the considerations, would like eriksen over tadic. it's all pointless but my point was I'm not investing money in defence, 5 way rotation & not concerning myself with keepers, as long as they place & rotate, sorted.

Van Gaal said: "I have said that I want to see first the players I have, and give them an honest chance. We still have a month to go.

"We are winning everything. Maybe we don't need other players."

I'd be worried if I was a United fan, they are only winning matches in pre season, but I would expect him to make some signings especially some CBs

Does anyone else think Geoff Cameron at Stoke is a bit of red herring?

Having had a reasonable world cup it is not a huge suprise that so many have seen him as a budget option who plays for a team that have a reputation for letting few goals, especially at home. However, he has barely featured in pre-season in matches where Mark Hughes has appeared to field his strongest 11 with Pieters and Bardsley seemingly taking up the full-back positions.

His is the joint-5th highest priced Stoke defender - something which could indicate where he stands in the pecking order - but many have seen his selection as a clever piece of budgeting. He is currently the 7th most selected defender with 16.2% of managers picking him up for GW1 but I'd just warn the many people out there that he is more than a slight risk and with so many other options available for comparative prices, is definitely one to be avoided.
