The Digest – Gameweek 3

We cast a final glance back towards Gameweek 3 this morning. Chelsea’s deadly front man, Liverpool’s display at the Lane and the encouraging form of a number of budget strikers all come into consideration.

The Player

On Thursday, the press were united in suggesting he’d be out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. On Friday, Jose Mourinho described him as a “big doubt” for Chelsea’s trip to Everton. On Saturday, Diego Costa scored twice and grabbed the maximum bonus points in a 6-3 rout at Goodison, badly burning the 155,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who decided to part company with the summer signing ahead of the weekend deadline.

He’s been bothered by hamstring problems before but Costa, clearly, is made of stern stuff – last season he started 34 of Atletico’s 38 league matches on the way to the La Liga title. Already with four strikes to his name, his consistency compares very favourably to team-mate Eden Hazard – Costa has already scored three times on his travels, just one fewer than the Belgian managed away from Stamford Bridge over the entire 2013/14 campaign.

With Cesc Fabregas pulling the strings in midfield and Costa’s predatory nature in the box, Mourinho’s side look full of goals right now and the Spain international could well be on course to replicate last term’s 28-goal heroics for Atletico. Snapped up by over 240,000 FPL managers already this week, Costa may not quite scale the heights of Luis Suarez as a Fantasy asset but, from what we’ve seen so far, he may be as close as we can hope for this season.

The Team

A patchy home win over Southampton on the opening day of the season highlighted that Liverpool were still finding their feet after the Uruguayan’s departure. Defeat at City hardly helped instil confidence as the Reds rolled up to face a Spurs side that had yet to concede under Mauricio Pochettino but the manner of their emphatic victory suggests Brendan Rodgers’ side are still a Fantasy force to be reckoned with.

Switching to a midfield diamond, with Raheem Sterling tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge and debutant Mario Balotelli, the Merseysiders tore apart the Tottenham rearguard with a display that could easily have harvested more than three goals. The attacking trio now brace themselves for a superb run of fixtures that is sure to bring significant investment Liverpool’s way – heading into the next six Gameweeks (AVL, wh, EVE, WBA, qpr, HUL) without at least one of Sterling and Sturridge on board looks a risky tactic.

At the back, too, the attacking thrust offered by summer signing Alberto Moreno down the left has already come to fruition emphatically at the Lane. With Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel sidelined through injury last weekend, the Reds backline expertly marshaled their opponents in the final third, and with new boys Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo also starting alongside Moreno and Mamadou Sakho, there’s cause for optimism at both ends of the pitch for Rodgers’ side right now.

The Talking Point

As Costa headed into the weekend with question marks hanging over him, Fantasy managers loaded up on City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero for the home clash against Stoke. Their failure to deliver, allied with United’s toils at Burnley and Sturridge’s blank at Spurs, came at a time where many budget forwards put their names forward as potential contenders for our three-man frontlines.

After three Gameweeks of the new season, five of the top eight forwards are priced at 6.0 and under. Steven Naismith and Andreas Weimann have already delivered 20+ points for their owners, while Saido Berahino, Nikica Jelavic and Leonardo Ulloa are all pushing to be this year’s Jay Rodriguez.

Right now, with such a wealth of budget options to consider, many may be tempted to spend big in midfield and potentially snap up Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at the back, bringing more 3-5-2 formations into contention than ever before.

For others, it’s only a matter of time before the premium forwards start to deliver, though. As mentioned, Liverpool’s run of matches will surely afford Sturridge the chance to get amongst the goals again, while the arrival of Radamel Falcao at United looks very tempting – crucially, the Colombian would be a real differential to the 42%-owned Wayne Rooney and is priced at 11.0 to Rooney’s 10.5. With the prolific Costa looking unstoppable, a trio of heavy-hitters up top looks just as enticing.

For the sake of our Fantasy seasons, though, we need the likes of Naismith and Ivanovic to flourish in order to offer more variety amongst out 15-man squads. It can only be beneficial to the Fantasy games and managers alike that, as we head into Gameweek 4, there’s less agreement than ever on the 2014/15 “template team”.

Anyone interested in bringing in Welbeck? Could be decent value if he starts upfront.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Transfer day moves

Which player move for you is the most exciting in Fantasy Football terms. It could be their effect on the team or themselves in terms of scoring Fantasy points.

For me its not actually Falcao....he may score a lot, but if he does the cheaper Rooney will surely also benefit. Welbeck's move to Arsenal gets my vote. Looks nailed on for the next few months and could be an absolute bargain at 6.9m. Having him in a front line also allows significant investment in midfield. The knock on effect of drafting him in could be huge as well in terms of Fantasy points across your team. Falcao could weaken it, especially if it means leaving out one of Costa or perhaps a Liverpool striker.

I'm unsure...they have so manyoptions in midfield Bruce has the luxury of picking the right players for the right formation and opposition. Can't see Ben Arfa, Ramirez, Jelavic, Ince, Huddlestone, Livermore all together. There will be rotation there I think.

Ramirez looks to be a great signing in real terms...but in Fantasy terms he brings a whole heap of rotation worry.

Mane might push Tadic into the hole. Potentially making him a better FPL prospect, scored most of his goals in the hole in the Dutch league.

Mane looks the most interesting from a FPL pov. More of a winger/striker than a mid, so slightly oop. The question is whether he'll start much. Unless he's incredible (unlikely) I don't see a 22 year-old from the Austrian league making the step up to the PL straightaway.
I'll be keeping an eye on him though and if he looks like getting regular starts, he's in.

        Alderweireld could be tempting too.

Got to be Welbeck for value.

Saido Mane at 7m ahead of good fixtures could be a decent punt if he can get even close to his record in AUS.

Depends on how well they play as a team, if Di Maria, Mata, Rooney, Falcao etc click there could be big rewards from Falcao, same applies to wellbeck & arsenal, particularly once Wally's back. Atm tho I don't think either are that appealing the way they're both playing.

How do you feel about having both Welbeck and Ramsey? A cheaper nailed on Arsenal attacker may actually make Ramsey dispensable. I've already been thinking about ditching him for Gerrard for the couple of weeks, with this year's pricing making him easy to get back. I don't fancy a double up on Arsenal at all given their fixtures.

Also, Welbeck could ensure Sanchez stays on the wing, where he is more comfortable.

Indeed. Two will start...one will come on at 60 mins. The way ManC attack and get goals in the final part of games (except when Stoke visit 🙂 ) means that there will be points there.

Having said that I'm still ditching Jovetic first chance.

      Welbeck is the obvious one.

AI am a bi Toby Alderwield fan. I think Southampton could be even more safe at the back. Like a Jan Vertonghen lite.

A word on Sane though. He played for a team that regularly dominates their league 3,4,5-0, so I would take his stats with a pinch of salt.

Was going to submit a community article about why I would steer clear of Falcao.

It's barely been talked about in the media but while at Monaco he suffered a massive drop in form compared to his performances for Athletico and Porto, this was before he got the ACL injury in January. I was surprised to see his goals per 90 minutes were far lower than Costa's and very similar to Welbeck's.

      Falcao 2013-14 (per 90 minutes)

      Goals Scored 0.58
      Shot Accuracy 60%
      Goal Assists 0
      Chances Created 0.52

      Welbeck 2013-14 (per 90 minutes)

      Goals Scored 0.55
      Shot Accuracy 53%
      Goal Assists 0.06
      Chances Created 0.80

      Costa 2013-14 (per 90 minutes)

      Goals Scored 0.82
      Shot Accuracy 57%
      Goal Assists 0.09
      Chances Created 1.37

This reminds me a lot of what happened with Torres just before he went to Chelsea, he had suffered a massive drop in form and several injuries in the preceding 12 months but when he signed for Chelsea everyone expected him to suddenly perform like he has 18 months before... unsurprisingly it didn't happen.

I agree that Welbeck is by far the best choice, I expect him to score a similar number of goals between now and January as Falcao and for the price he is an absolute steal.

Costa may be behind Hazard in the Penalty Takers list and Falcao may be behind Rooney and RvP.

        Therefore for Non-Penalty goals:

Falcao drops to 0.45 goals per 90
Welbeck remains at 0.55 goals per 90
Costa drops to 0.67 goals per 90

        Exactly my thinking.

Welbeck to Arsenal is like Sturridge to Liverpool.

Falcao to United is like Torres to Chelsea.

Most people say yes. There are a few dissenting voices who note that:

      A) About a quarter of his recent seasons' goals have come from penalties (which he may not get at United)
      B) He's coming off the back of a very serious injury

    Begovic
    Coloccini - Clyne - PvA
    Tadic - Sterling - Siggy - Ramsey
    Costa - Balotelli - Falcao

    Gilks -- Marney - Naylor - Chester

    0.7 leftover, cheers.

First time in the Prem for Falcao in a side that is still rebooting and yet to settle. I would be tempted to monitor for now.

You have all the key budget defenders, I would perhaps look Chelsea Def and maybe Moreno for attacking returns.

Like the Balo punt....he looked keen and think Rodgers will help settle his demons. Would be tempted to get Fab in, he looks to be assist king again. Other than my opinion, looks ok.

That's what happens if you tinker with a wildcard in hand. That's why I avoid it!

Obviously looks good, a WC team always does.

It's amazing how "out of date" your team can get within a couple of weeks in this game, e.g. Mine:

    No Swans defence
    No Sterling
Hazard - seems to be "unfashionable" on here now
Rooney - seems to have gone out of favour
Jovetic - practically written off as a no hoper now

But, you can't wildcard every few weeks and you don't want to take hits all over the place so just trust your squad

    1. MJ6987
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 8 months ago

And obviously no Welbeck or Falcao - the ultimate in fashion!

true, RMTs will generally only have around 20-25 different options during a 1-2 week period, but after that it will be all change again to a different crop of 20-25 players!

Hazard is a good captain pick for GW4 week. Goal in the last home game (robbed of bonus) assist away to Everton. Big haul could be next gw. keep the faith

deciding between swapping Jovetic to Pelle for a few weeks and then get Welbeck or just get welbeck in instead.. need the to free up 0.4 for Eriksen to Fabregas and either move fits that bill

The most nailed on 4m one is Moore at Leicester. There are quite a few decent 4.5 options. If you've got a spare 0.5m get 2 4.5ers.

    a) I've only just bought Naismith

    b) Fixtures

    I am tempted though

also not sure on Rooney, if LvG is gonna try and play RvP and Falcao together then Rooney could drop into midfield, he's dead as an FPL option if that happens
