Scout Report – Abel Hernandez

Having lost striker Shane Long to Southampton earlier this month, Steve Bruce concluded his search for a replacement on a busy transfer deadline day. The Hull boss wrapped up the transfer of Abel Hernandez from Italian side Palermo for a club record fee of around £10 million and, after the 24-year-old signed a three year deal with the Tigers, Bruce immediately talked up the new boy’s prospects:

“Abel is a fantastic signing and highlights just how far the club has come in such a short space of time. He is an exciting talent and, like myself, I’m sure the supporters can’t wait to see him in action.”

The History

Hernandez’ career began in his native country Uruguay, where the centre forward – nicknamed ‘La Joya’ (or ‘The Jewel’) – rose through the ranks at Central Espanyol before being signed by rival side Penarol in the summer of 2008, at the age of 17. His strong performances as a regular starter for the Uruguayan club saw Palermo come calling a half a year later.

During his first season in Italy, Hernandez starred in the Palermo Under-19 squad who secured the famous Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti for youth teams in Serie A and B, and went on to make his first team debut. Across his four and a half seasons with the Sicilian side, Hernandez formed a formidable partnership with compatriot Edinson Cavani and experienced a loss in the final of the Coppa Italia, relegation to Serie B and then promotion back to the top flight last season, notching a total of 33 goals and 11 assists in 100 appearances.

On the international stage, nine goals in 11 appearances for Uruguay’s Under-20 side earned Hernandez his first senior cap in July 2010 at the age of 19, in which he instantaneously announced himself with a goal to earn a 2-0 friendly victory over Angola. A career highlight came in the 2013 Confederations Cup, when the frontman grabbed four goals in his team’s 8-0 group stage victory over Tahiti. In total, ‘La Joya’ has tallied seven goals in 14 international appearances, though he has continually struggled to earn a regular starting role ahead of the world-class talents of Cavani and Luis Suarez.

The Prospects
With a hectic final day of ins and outs now behind him, Bruce has some considerable tinkering to do before his side face West Ham after the international break. The acquisitions of Mohamed Diame, Gaston Ramirez and Hatem Ben Arfa will give the Hull boss plenty to ponder over in the middle of the park, and could result in a very different looking Hull team taking to the field in two weekends’ time from the one that lost out to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Hernandez’s prospects, on the other hand, don’t look so much of a mystery, as the record signing is bound to start alongside Nikica Jelavic in a front two, hence pitting the pair of forwards against each other for our attentions.

The knock-on effect from Hernandez’s arrival does not, however, bode well for a number of others in Hull’s ranks. Tom Ince had, until now, offered an out-of-position differential playing up top with Jelavic, but the young Englishman’s security of starts now look dubious. The 5.5-priced midfielder could drop in behind the front two if Bruce does continue with the 3-4-1-2 formation seen in the first few weeks of the season, though Ramirez, Ben Arfa and Robbie Brady do now offer alternatives in that position.

Hence, with so much uncertainness surrounding Bruce’s midfield, it would seem to leave Hull’s front two as our only viable routes into the Tigers’ attacking set-up for now. Handed a 7.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, Hernandez is a full 1.0 dearer than Jelavic and, bearing in mind the latter also has two goals in his last two appearances to boost his appeal, it would be a leap of faith to splash out for his costlier team-mate right now.

Nonetheless, there’s no denying that the physical presence and goal scoring capabilities of both players as Bruce looks to address a scoring record which saw his side net just 38 times last term. With home fixtures against West Ham and Crystal Palace allied with a trip to Newcastle to come in the next four Gameweeks, the stage is certainly set for Hernandez to plunder the points from the off and perhaps offer Fantasy managers a new ‘Jewel’ in our frontline crowns. In all honesty, though, when the likes of Everton’s in-form Steven Naismith is available for 5.3 and Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck can be snapped up for 6.9, Hernandez has a lot of convincing to do if he’s to become a genuine Fantasy force.

If you look at it like this, what are the other defensive options in those teams?

      1. Taylor £4.5m. Nailed
      2. Wisdom £4.0 and plenty at £4.5m.
      3. Wilson at £4.5m but probably not nailed long term and no others below £5.0m

      I'd go Begovic.

I thought there was a stat that his United conversion rate was the same at Sturridge's City/Chelsea conversion rate of around 0.25. Sturridge's move to Liverpool has put him to 0.65 and it was theorised Welbeck's move might do the same for him.
Certainly needs some more composure in front of goal.

Every man and his dog banging on about how good a player / goalscorer Falcao is, spouting stats left, right and centre.

What are his stats post injury?

What are his stats in the Premier League?

Could it be case in 6 months time every man and his dog will be lamenting how good a player / goalscorer Falcao WAS ?

Certainly in FPL terms is seems premature to bring him in imo.

ACL can basically end your career - although you can assume United put him through a pretty thorough medical.

A bit like Costa you have a sense that he is suited to the PL in a way that Lamela, Ozil etc weren't guaranteed to be.

I'll wheel this out again: http://thebubblegame.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/falca-oh/

Second bar chart is interesting. List of players ranked by NPGA90 (non-penalty goals per 90 mins). Top 10 looks like unarguably the top 10 strikers in Europe. Falcao doesn't even make top 30.

He's been declining for the last 3 years.

The stats are that Falcao has scored two goals in three games for Monaco this season.

Given United's options is he really a risk? Rooney has never been prolific and RVP is both expensive and out of form / fitness.

United need good news and a big result fast. I can't see Falcao not starting and leading the line.

Can anyone remember their worst fantasy moment? Something worse than Yaya scoring when you didn't have him?

I remember my main ML rival captaining Friedel the day he saves two penalties for Blackburn.

I'm also pretty sure that years ago I had Ronaldo and Richard Wright when the former stepped up to take a penalty against the latter, knowing that as long as the ball went on target I was guaranteed goal or save points, and it was screwed wide.

I dimly recollect a single points gameweek. Some time ago now, lots of games had been cancelled due to snow but one or two still went ahead. Tim Cahill, who was highly owned, scored a goal to rescue a lot of managers from the indignity but I ended up on 9pts or something.

Tim Cahill was my 'auto-captain' because he had the best form or something.

Last season, Michu vs Cardiff, brought him in on an FT only to find out he was injured so shipped him out just to find out he was hurt so shipped him out -4 only to find out he was fine so I brought him back -8. Michu blanked wearing my armband, I finished the GW with 32 (-8) so 24 points

Aston Villa v Norwich last year. Brought in and captained Benteke against a poor Norwich side on the back of his beastly DGW1. I had Lukaku for Chelsea, so it was a good move at the time.

Benteke promptly injured in the first 10mins and Snodgrass who I also had missed a penalty.

15mins into the GW I was on 0 points having my captain already played.

Could be worse though, my mate captained Howard last week against Chelsea 😯

was on a wildcard and only had space for 1 more striker, rooney or dzeko. rooney was the obvious choice but i had a really good feeling about dzeko and couldn't bare to lose him.
man city were playing in the early kickoff, dzeko scored 4! i couldn't believe my luck, 21 points, what an amazing decision. suarez was my captain and blanked home to bolton so i needed something and dzeko was that something, an amazing differential. i didn't even mind now if rooney scored later that day as i had 21 points from dzeko. 21. TWENTY ONE! dreamland.

anyway in the evening kickoff man utd won 8-2, the heavily captained rooney got a hattrick and 2 assists, 23 points, and ruined my life

Last year, final gw, when my mini-league rival had Ramsey on 1 sub spot. Barkley, who he did have on pitch, did not play a single minute for the first time in 3 months. Ramsey scored and was subbed in ,resulting in me losing pay out spot after he past me in the league.

Ouch, it's one thing having a decent squad that means you sometimes get points off the bench but it's another taking a decision to bench someone like Ramsey but then getting the luck of the draw anyway.

Remember last season when Man Utd played West Brom at Old Trafford? I had Rio Ferdinand in my team, and for some reason (maybe none of my attacking players had good fixtures) thought I'd make him captain, in the thought that the surefire clean sheet would give me a 12 point captain at least.

Long story short, Man Utd shipped 3 and he got megged by Morgan Amalfitano.

Oh, here's another one I've been reminded of again lately.

Again last season, my goalkeeper, Mr Artur Boruc, conceded a goal 13 seconds into a game, to his opposing keeper. The lowest of the low.

this week, got rid of austin and costa as they were injured and caulker as i didnt want to lose value.

Austin got 9 points, costa got 12, caulker got 6.

got In Bony as captain (4), jovetic (2) and dummet (0) for a 8 point hit.

Would have had siggy as captain otherwise..

overall missed out on about 42 points extra this week. and now i dont like my team for this gw..

The week where I somehow wrangled a total score of 15 after taking a 4 point hit.

Everyone that week conceded massively, got yellowed, or was subbed off at 58 ,minutes.

I tumble down the rankings and made it back to second in the league. But that week probably cost me the year.

Swapping Carroll for Lukaku on the last day of the season a couple years and Coutinho's goal not being counted. Carroll scored a brace, but Lukaku scored 4 I think and I lost a prize league first place spot by 3 points. Prizes weren't given out anyways though, so it didn't end up being too bad.

Yaya Toure can be a massive differential around these parts if he starts doing what he was doing last season. He could also represent value for money for a CIty player because he is £1.2mill cheaper than Aguero and he sometimes plays in the hole. OK he may not be on pens all the time. But he takes the freekicks and Aguero is glass.

Its a player I'm certainly looking at for my WC. I know its not flavor of the month, but you only get as far as the crowd by constantly following it.

Nope. Don't think I'd go for it until he starts to show last years form. Price changes aren't as big an issue as they were last year, so doesn't hurt much to wait. Hurts a lot having a 10.8 midfielder not firing though.

    Krul
    Cahill / Clyne / PVA
    Ramsey / Mata / Fabregas / Sterling
    Jutkiewicz / Rooney / Costa
    (Guzan / Ince / Wisdom / Moore)

    2 FT & 0 ITB

Who is more necessary for this team: Siggy or Naismith ?

Presumably Siggy is coming in for Mata? Therefore given Swansea play at Stamford Bridge and Mata plays QPR I'd say that's the transfer that can wait another week.

So Naismith in for Jutkiewicz seems to be the best option atm...only question is in order to afford it who should i sell out of the following ?
        A) Cahill -> Moreno/Lovren
        B) Ince -> King/Jones/Boyd

Overall very good. The obvious issues which I'm sure you're aware of:

      1. A GW4 wildcard is not the time to limit your squad to 13 playing players imo.
      2. Going with three £4.0m defenders severely limits your options a) when one of them gets dropped/injured ad b) when Southampton's and Liverpool's fixtures both get awkward.

If Krul gets injured, you have a 4.0m playing keeper. You just have to ride the tough fixtures.

The rationale (which I don't claim is bulletproof) goes as follows:

      A) Keepers don't score a lot so you might as well go cheap
      B) The danger of a 4.0m keeper is that if your playing keeper gets injured, you've got no keeper
      C) The genius move is to get the real-world backup for your playing keeper as your backup keeper so that if Krul gets injured, your 4.0m keeper will become a playing keeper

You don't worry about individual weeks with tough opponents. Just accept that you'll get 0-2 points and remember that the money you saved is being spent outfield where it earns more points.

First "powerhouse" they face is Liverpool in GW10, next one Chelsea at GW15, both at home.
Maybe Spurs away GW9, if that qualifies as a powerhouse.

Point being they won't be in my team for the entire season, just for as long as they perform, the fixtures remain kind and I don't WC.

Up until then it's a very nice bang for your buck GK duo.

It is good to have a position in your squad you dont have to worry about imo.

The difference between premium and cheapo keepers isn't as stark as it should be once save pts are taken account...In reality if the best keeper from the best team was the only measure (clean sheets) then Cech should have run away with it last season...but he didn't...

If you don't have Sturridge, transfer him in and captain him, you can thank me when GW 4 has finished.

      Influence, Creativity & Threat

Three numbers that the FFS guys have put together as good measures of fantasy points potential. They're derived from the underlying stats in some arcane way.

I'm not personally sure that Influence is a good predictor of points but Creativity & Threat usually are.

What does everyone think, time to ship out Rooney and bring in Falcao or hold fire?

    Thanks all.

I'd wait until Falcao has safely navigated Joey Barton.

Joey Barton will cop it once someone disregards the ban.

        He's no Vinny Jones.

Rooney out because it makes you nauseous to think that he is the nations' captain

Whoops, just put that on the next page.
Villa were excellent against us last season, and Chelsea look like annihilating teams at the mo, but I'm still not sure.
