Bonus Point Distribution Across Player Positions

This work was inspired by Jonty’s article on Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus point magnets in defence earlier this month. Taking this analysis of how full-backs and centre-backs are performing under the FPL bonus system, I have decided to look across all positions to find the best performers so far.

The Data

For the purposes of this feature I have looked at the total number of bonus points awarded for each position each Gameweek and then as a total so far.

Gameweek bonus point allocation (figures relate to number of times award was made by position each week)

Conclusions

Forwards perform reasonably well in terms of maximum bonus point hauls, but with few two or one point allocations are an all or nothing option. In terms of total bonus points they offer poor value compared to defenders and midfielders. While midfielders notched up 180 bonus points in total and defenders acrued 174, forwards managed just 115.

Defenders are the most likely to gain both two or one point allocation and could offer the best value. In addition investment in defenders such as Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Everton’s Leighton Baines, who have goals and assists in their locker and already have maximum bonus points from games, could offer the best value.

Midfielders do well across the board, offering solid captaincy options with their strong chance of maximum bonus points. Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, for example, may be an unfashionable pick as he is in the twilight of his career but in terms of bonus points the midfielder is bang on trend. He has already notched up two maximum bonus point allocations and is a player I have already mentioned for his ability to defy his advancing years when it comes to scoring points in FPL.

Excellent article. So pleased that community members have decided to look into this. This is yet another solid piece of research that proves defenders are doing really well this year for bonus.

got yours in the system now...will put def and attackers together and round it up. Thanks for doing that. Another great piece of research.

Nice article but those numbers don't add up. Sum the forwards and its 24 times with 3bps.

Making them less likely than midfielders.

    Or am I missing something.

    Do appreciate the work though.

Cool. Thanks. Glad it wasn't just me getting it wrong.

It does make the write up incorrect too but hey. Similar themes apply.

        Captain midfielders!!!!!!! (Or agueroooooooooo)

Total no. of bonus points is also incorrect throughout the article. The number being used is no of times any amount of bonus is scored, i.e defenders have scored some amount of bonus 92 times, but total bonus scored is 172.

    Well spotted.

I'm not sure looking at the TOTAL allocation of bps is fair on forwards either. There are fewer forwards in the in the game (and in our teams) so it's not representative. Similar applies to goalies..

Another option would be to look at the average bps for each position (not hard to do just divide the totals by how many players there are for each position in the game)

    Interesting article tho 🙂

All figures are sorted now. Doesn't alter the conclusion too much either. Defenders are still doing well, Mids still doing well across the board - but also a great for max bonus and fwds are an all or nothing max bonus option. They continue to trail def and mids in terms of total bonus.

For me fwds getting 115 bonus compared to 174 for def and 180 for mids is massive news. Fwds are no longer the bonus kings and defenders are giving mids a real run for their money. This could be the season where the never captain rule for Baines is thrown out the window.

Was that rule a replacement for Never Captain Nicky Butt?

Perhaps it is time to replace it with Never Captain Lukaku!

This completely ignores The Casual's point about how the weighting is totally missed, and the fact that teams simply play fewer forwards (or at least players classed as forwards in the game). Rarely do you see 2 players who the game class as a striker starting the same game. And you often have 5 mids. Even if you did have 2, and had 4 mids, then the numbers still stack in favour of forwards.

It's not news that 4-5 players are scooping more bonus points in total than 1-2.

this coupled with Innsie's article sways me slightly towards Azpi over Mangala atm

Chelsea perhaps more reliable for cleanies and City are so attacking that their defenders often have to get attacking points to get any BAPs

Of course Mangala is perfectly capable of that

Costa can't compete with Fabregas or Azpi for bonus unless he scores a brace or more.

Bonus isn't neat and tidy in that a player gets 3, another gets 2 and another gets 1 in a particular week. In that week for example in the West Ham v Liv game Sterling and Sakho both got 3bps, Noble got 1 and no one got 2.

great article, maybe even a 4-5-1 formation with Aguero the striker now and again is an idea at somepoint

Hey, first off this is a great and thought provoking article. Secondly, unfortunately, it's not accurate, for example:

In GW5 you say 13 people got 3 BPs, 5 FWs, 4 MFs and 4 DFs, where in reality it's 11 people, 5 FWs, 4 MFs and 2 DFs.
You write that GKs have gotten 2 BPs 5 times, whereas they've only gotten 2 BPs 3 times.
By your calculations GKs have gotten a total of 16 BPs, but they've only gotten 13 by my count.
In GW2 you have 16 people getting 2 BPs, but 14 did.

I'm sorry I didn't go over the whole article to find out all the inaccuracies, but I just wanted to point this out.

I'd also like to note that you should keep in mind that there are far far more midfielders and defenders on the field in any given game than goalkeepers and forwards.
As an extreme and simplistic example, if every team played 3-5-1, if FWs had 100 BPs and MFs 200 BPs from the first 7 GWs that would mean(barring all subs) that the average FW got ~0.7 BPs/week and the average MF got ~0.3 BPs/week.

Obviously you have to factor into this things like there are a lot more midfielders you don't want than forwards and those midfielders are unlikely to get bonus points, etc.

One idea I got for a more accurate picture was to take the total bonus points tally by position and divided it by the number of players in that position who've A) gotten bonus points, B) played a certain # of mins, C) gotten a certain score.

    For example:

    Position...BPs/position..#BP receiving players......AVG BPs/player
    FWD.......112................30.................................3.73
    MID.........176................60.................................2.93

I used my own numbers for that which are pretty close to yours, but what those might indicate is that average bonus points for FWDs is considerably higher than those for MIDs for all FWDs and MIDs who have a reasonable chance of getting bonus points.

Further proof that goal keepers which cost more than 4.5 are a waste of resources.

    Great analysis, cheers.

For those moaning that the article doesn't take into account how there are fewer forwards in each match than midfielders; bear in mind there are also fewer forwards in your FPL team than midfielders.

    Good article, thanks!

      U wot m8? Absolutely irrelevant.

The basis of the article is that the distribution of bonus points favour midfielders or defenders. Which is undoubtedly true, but not at all noteworthy. The conclusion that people seem to be drawing is that it might be worth plumping for mids over fwds. Which based on Mizzeh's much better analysis up there may be the exact opposite of what you should do.
